So I received a call from my son today, but he immediately said this is not the call I was expecting!

He did fail his PFA (I am assuming this because it was a 30 second scripted call) and he was moved to a new PIR date and division in March.

I want to thank everyone in here for your answers, thoughts, information, and prayers as he continues on in Boot camp for 4 more weeks to get that run under control!

I am really sad about it - because I know he is sad - but I feel happy that now his new PIR has 4 guests allowed!

  • Lazerguppie

Kai cat- they cannot take electronics back on base after liberty when they PIR. We flew out of separate airports, so I ended up having to ship his laptop and phone, since I wasn't going to see him on Sat.
So, you will have to keep her electronics until the airport or ship later.

  • Lazerguppie

Kaicat sorry he got bumped back! But he will get it.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

kai cat - they will work with him to get him to pass the run. Stay positive for him - keep sending him encouraging letters and we'll all keep praying for him too!  Don't be sad - everything happens for a reason - he's got this!

  • PedALqueen4ever

Thanks @ B'sNukeMoM MM, I got it!(so, now to set a day to do this task of delivery of his item(s) he order to be sent to him) ...
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

PedAlQueen - glad you were able to get it figured out!  Yes, finding the time is always the hard part ;-D

  • kai cat

THanks for the encouraging comments ladies - just what I need.  It is hard to keep in mind that the mental part is way easier for him than the physical part!

  • TahoeZephyr

Nancy Jo and Chipmunk (and any others who are following my sailor's transition)...indeed, it is odd that there is no mess hall at DTP!  But I fear not - my son says he actually gained some weight while at A School due to the long study hours and the primary source of quick food being the snack machines.  He seems to have the duty van schedule down so getting to the other part of the base for meals does not seem to be a huge issue.  When I spoke with him yesterday he indicated easy foods such as energy bars were helpful to get him through the morning.  I will likely send him some Starbucks Via's for an instant start to the day in my next care package :)  As for other amenities at DTP, there is a laundry facility, game room, and a work out center.  Apparently the WiFi is a bit of a problem for his laptop connection...

As for a "day in the life", it seems he will have 2 "duty days" per week, which appears to entail being "on duty" and basically at the mercy of whomever needs something done for a 24 hour time frame; on these days he has to muster 5 times (the first around 07:00 I think) and he cannot leave the base during these days; on "non-duty days" he has to muster 3 x (the first at 07:45) and can have usual evening liberty.  Still not sure about a regular PT schedule.

For this week he says he is reporting for "watch training" so that he can retain his phase 3 privileges. And, incidentally, he did locate an email attachment with his transcript proving his completion of 4 years of NJROTC, so his E3 rating should stand.

Apparently there are about 200 sailors at DTP, so not as much work to go around as help, it appears.  We are encouraging him to establish some sort of productive routine for his non-duty days, which hopefully will include some gym time.  Also trying to get him to take care of a few nagging medical issues (ie ingrown toenails) that he could not find the time for at A School for fear of missing class work or a test.  Still no word on his re-rate options.  But he has made some quick buddies (as always) and seems in good spirits.  Again, seems relieved that stress of the workload and lengthy study time has abated!

I will keep posting updated info as I receive it for anyone who is interested in learning a bit about "the dark side" - a small joke there...gotta keep smiling, right?

  • soccermom19

I am one very happy mom right now.  Just got a phone call with my sailor.  He sounded great.  He was very happy and upbeat.  He wanted to let me know that he is no longer 1752.  He is now 1801.  He was put back because of missing something due to a minor medical reason.  He said it really doesn't matter because both those classes begin Power School at the same time.  I guess it's not like A school where they begin all the time.  So it just means he has less time to wait until the next Power School begins.

But I am so happy just to hear his voice.

    Good night ladies.

  • PedALqueen4ever

Awesome news NNMoms!!! :D to a glance reading of all of yours' updates....
  • Chipmunk

TahoeZephyr- thank you for your updates and keeping us posted!! It is very helpful to have some insight into DTP. Glad your son seems to be up beat and doing well. I would write more but I need to get to bed, but won't be able to respond much tomorrow.

Soccermom19 - I think your son may have moved to my son's class. 1801-T. He mentioned something about a roll in to his class, but I thought he said they also rolled out, so I might have misunderstood. He texted me this evening  about 10:05 pm his time to say Goodnight, so I will have to check with him. Their grad date is April 6th!

PedAlQueen - Glad you were finally able to get the address. Yes, finding the time to pack a box and get it to the PO or other shipper, can take some doing.

    Good night all!

Oh Kai Cat - I saw your post earlier - so sorry to hear about your son. Keep encouraging him. At least he is being given an opportunity to roll back and try for a new PIR and get his run down.

  • JayDee659

kai cat my daughter was telling me that she thought she'd messed up and failed her run when she looked at the time and saw she was over.  She was about to slow down and just jog it in when another sailor ran up to her and told her to pick it up and keep going.  Turns out she'd looked at the wrong clock and would have failed if they other sailor hadn't have pushed her along.  Her thoughts on that incident were "just keep moving no matter what".  I'm sure your son will make it!  Just keep moving!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Oh the dreaded PT. Lots of nukes struggle there. Keep encouraging; it's the best we can do.

TahoeZephyr, that is a great note! You give a great picture of what the sailors in DPT experience. We've heard before about the down time being hard. It's always better to busy. Your advice to develop a routine is good. Sounds like he's adjusting OK so far. I'm so glad to hear it. And he needs to get those toes fixed. Ouch!

PedAlQueen, glad you have your problem figured out. You got this!

  • Chipmunk

TahoeZephyr - Yes, encourage your son to get his feet taken care of. The one thing my son asked help on after PIR was for me to look at his toes and help with a similar issue, that a bunkmate had helped him at bc. It turns out that for the swim test their RDC or other superior, told them to cut their toenails to the quick basically, because if they scratched an officer or someone they would be in big trouble. So, I helped him continue to pamper his feet. Ironically, in INDOC they had a doctor come tell them about the pitfalls of improperly trimming toenails!!!!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Tuesday!

TahoeZephyr - thanks for the info on DTP.  I'm glad your son is figuring things out and especially glad he found his transcripts so he can remain an E3.  Hopefully he will get info soon on a re-rate.....  Would you mind re-posting your comment up above in Wears Large Hats discussion "Almost Made It" - or I can post it for you if you don't mind.  It's good info and I don't want it to get lost in our main thread here.

soccermom - glad you got to hear from your son.  Sounds like he's taking it all in stride - that's good!

  • bigsky21

just a quick note (I'm SWAMPED at work!!!)...for any who are interested the Falcon Heavy launch is today, live stream starts at 1:30pm ET on the spacex.com website.....

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

bigsky21, is that Elon Musk's company?

  • soccermom19

bigsky21 - Thanks for the launch info.  I think that will be interesting to watch.

TahoeZephyr - Yes, glad he is not stressing about in another class.  Much better to let go of that which you cannot control.  Thank you for the words of support!!!!

JayDee659 - good words!!!  Just keep moving; you never know. I will pass that on to my own sailor. Thanks for sharing!!!

  • bigsky21

NancyJo, yes it is, and word is he's launching his Tesla Roadster into space as a payload test for the Falcon Heavy :) I think somebody has too much money to play with lol :D

  • bigsky21

They just updated the launch time to 2:50 ET

Soccermom19 on clear days I can see the launch from where I'm at...I'd sure like to drive down sometime to see one in person, but you never know if they're actually going to launch or not until the time comes!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Musk is quite the visionary. Lots of successful stuff but has had failures too. He's not afraid to fail. I love his attitude. I do take issue with his belief that religion cannot coexist with science but this is America so nuff said there. I will definitely try to tune into the launch.

  • soccermom19

bigsky21  -  That was AMAZING to watch!!!  Thanks so much for sharing the info.  Loved it.  Would be even more amazing to see in person.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

It was amazing to watch!  Thanks for letting us know bigsky21!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

My mom is putting in an offer on a house today in the 55+ community we looked at and the agent says he thinks it's a pretty good bet they'll accept it!

S*@t just got real!  (Pardon my french, lol)

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

LOL B'sNuke. That's great news. Fingers crossed it all works out.

    I missed the launch. :(

  • Chipmunk

I missed the launch also - it would have been great science, but we were doing PE. Maybe we can find a replay.

B'sNuke - I hope things work out for your mom. The community sounds like a great place. My grandmother moved to Sun City, Ca (I think it is incorporated now) when I was a baby. We visited several times. The green rocks or turf grass / don't recall exactly, fascinated me as a little Midwestern girl.

  • bigsky21

Chipmunk, I’m sure you can find it on YouTube.....the live stream was a YouTube video :)

I was on my way home from work and we pulled over so we could watch - saw the plume in the sky and watched the live feed so we got the close up too! It amazes me how the boosters come back and land straight up the way they do...

My son told me last summer he eventually wants to work for SpaceX...I read an article a week or so ago about mini nuclear reactors NASA is testing to possibly power a Mars habitat, so you never know!!!! This just might be the path that gets him there :)

  • Pooh'sMom

bigsky21 - My nephew-in-law works at SpaceX.  He has great storied about Elon, since he works one-on-one with him on projects.

If you have a chance take a look at the community.  It's Solera at Oak Valley Greens in Beaumont, CA.  Beautiful place.  I'd like to retire there....

Having dinner tonight with a Navy mom from my Empty Nester group ;-D  Love getting together with other Navy moms!

  • SubMom

I am so happy to be a part of such wonderful group! I looked through different forums while our son was in Boot Camp and really liked what I read. Seeing the support and knowing that there are so many people that I can reach out is wonderful!

  • Chipmunk

SubMom - Welcome to our group.

For you and anyone else that has joined recently, please share a little about where you are at in your Navy journey.

My son is an ET currently in A school at GC, with expectations for an April 6th graduation. He helped me put together the A School daily schedule from a sailors perspective that is in the pages to the right and more in a discussion above. I still consider myself a newbie, but we are a very supportive group.

  • 3B'smom

Well, Ladies, Boy #2 has informed me that he wants to drop of out school and join the Navy. I cried. He is not looking to leave until after his younger brother graduates in May. I encouraged him to finish out the semester. He earned all A's last semester (his first semester in college), so to say that I was taken by surprise is an understatement.

He went to class today, so I am taking that as a good sign.

  • SubMom

Hi Chipmunk! Sorry - I had to leave as our son called :) He is an ET in A school at GC as well. He is waiting to class up but is totally enjoying everything he's doing. I cant wait to read A School daily schedule from a sailors perspective. It is always nice to know what your sailor is going through :)

  • Lazerguppie

SubMom. My son is also an ET waiting to class up. He says it will happen tomorrow. He has been in GC since Jan 20th.

  • SubMom

lazerguppie - My son is 1 week behind your son. I know a number classed up this week but there are still some waiting. I am hoping all that are waiting will keep their chin up and enjoy the "slow time"

  • Lazerguppie

My son said the MMs class up the soonest, as they are the most numerous. Then the EMs, then the ETs as only about 20% of noobs are ETs. He says they have been keeping him busy with cleaning.

  • SubMom

That's what my son said too. He has totally enjoyed cleaning. Kind of funny seeing that he really didn't care to do it when he was home :) Well, I am going to call it a night - hope everyone has a Wonderful Wednesday!!

  • Chipmunk

SubMom and lazerguppie, I would encourage you two to friend each other. It is good to have some friends in classes that are near each other so you can share stories, especially when your sailors may or may not be all that communicative.

And feel free to ask myself or others questions as well.

Also, I would encourage you to encourage your sons to get their UT (under instructions) done. This is where they have to learn how to stand watch. Granted, then they get assigned watch duty while in A school. But it is also a requirement that they have to accomplish, I think before they graduate A school, maybe Power School, so if they can do it while INDOC, it is one less "have too" that can be checked off the list.

3B'sMom - I understand how much of a shock it can be when our grown children decide to take their future into their own hands. I know I don't have to encourage you to see about sitting down with him and do a pro's and con's, so I will just say, I am thinking about you and praying for your son to seek wise counsel from his parents and others.

  • Chipmunk

jrowlo6 and Dawn - welcome as well!!

Sorry, I missed saying hi earlier. Tuesday's I am near and far from my computer.

    Evening all.

  • TahoeZephyr

B'sNukeMom, Chipmunk, bigsky21, NancyJo - thank you again for your support on this site :)  I reposted both of my DTP life related entries to WearsLargeHats' discussion "Almost made it" - that was a great suggestion.  And I will post again here when I have more updates :)

  • kai cat

Chipmunk - LOL! I find it very funny that you consider yourself a newbie here!  I am a definite newbie considering my son is still at boot camp - but you have provided so much of the nuke info that I requested! I think we are just on the computer near the same time of day or something!  I think you should start considering yourself one of the group - maybe a mid-lifer if not exactly an oldie!

    LOL

  • JayDee659

Ladies as I read back over your posts about waiting to class up I have to smile.  This is only the beginning.  Waiting is a common theme in the Navy.  They wait to class up, they wait while they're on prototype hold.  When they report for their first duty station they wait (and clean while they wait).  When they get to their ship they wait, and study to qualify (yes qualify again) and clean some more.  I know it's hard to wait for the next phase but it will come in due time.  Embrace the present and make it all that it can be.  Tomorrow will be here soon enough.

  • MoMom

I agree with you, kaicat. She is great with the sharing of information. Really lovely lady, too! I found this site when my son was in boot camp, PIR 7/14. But she really knows her stuff. =)

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Wednesday!

3B'sMom - has son #2 met with a recruiter yet or just talking about it?  Don't cry - it will be ok!  And remember we're here for you too!

I had a wonderful dinner last night with a Navy mom - we talked and talked (NancyJo and JayDee you know how I can talk lol!).  We actually closed down the restaurant lol!

My mom should find out today if they accept her offer on the house - keep your fingers crossed!

"Hurry up and wait" is so common in the Navy lol!

TahoeZephyr - thank you for posting that in WLH's discussion - I'm sure it will be helpful to others.  Definitely stick around and keep us updated on your sons progression.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Welcome to our newest members ~ Hawkeye Nuk, SubMom and Freebird!

SubMom has already jumped right in - Hawkeye Nuk and Freebird feel free to ask any questions you may have.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

B'sNuke, you rock. I'm glad your dinner was fun. There is nothing like navy moms for making instant friends. No one else knows what we experience. <3<3<3

3B's, 1 thing we can count on is that our kids make us cry. It will be OK. Your son may well continue his education after the navy with the bonus of getting money from Uncle Sam to do it. My SIL is a a nuclear engineer thanks to his stint in the navy and getting tuition assistance. Meanwhile, you never know what the future will be but take heart. I imagine he didn't come to his decision lightly and kind of knows what's what from his brother. (Your sailor is a man, right? I apologize if I mixed you up with someone and you have a daughter sailor.) You know what's what too; you already have 1 sailor. J's/S's mom has 3 military kids. She's a great inspiration for moms of multiple military. We're all here for you, Sea Sister, and we understand.

One word of advice. B'sNuke mentioned the recruiter - good advice. But bear in mind recruiters don't always tell the unvarnished truth. They're not a bunch of liars but sometimes they will fudge to get that recruit. Feel free to run things by us if you question something.

Yup, this is the best, most supportive group I have ever been part of (outside my family) and I love you all. I think I'm getting verklempt. Have a great hump day, Everybody!!

  • JayDee659

B'sNukeMom, I'm glad you had a good Navy Mom chat last night!  Maybe we talk so much because nobody understands us like another Navy Mom?

Keeping my fingers crossed on your mom's house!

  • WearsLargeHats

TahoeZephyr et.al., maybe there needs to be a "what happens at DTP" discussion.

BTW, for those who have visited at GC, DTP is the first left after crossing the railroad tracks, and way down the road, near where they used to store explosives. Hence, the not-so-great services out there.

  • NNLori

I'm sorry, I'm behind in the conversation. My son is also an ET. He graduated boot camp 10/20/17 and it was a month before he classed up and began his classes. It, sometimes, takes a while with the ET's depending on when the last class began. There is a lot of waiting in the Navy, I'm discovering.
