When you order the Boxes from the postal service, it comes with shipping tape and all the forms you need to ship to a ship.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Tape didn't come with mine. I must not have seen that button or something. As for forms, I do it online and I don't need forms. when you are ready to send it, go online to USPS and hit the click it and ship it button and it walks you through printing your label. You need to have access to a printer.

    Thanks for the support ladies.

regarding boy #2, as soon as I recovered from the initial shock, I told him that he could only do it if he spoke to Big Kid's recruiter. I texted my son to ask if his recruiter was still in town. Thankfully, he is. His recruiter was very straight forward - didn't sugar coat anything. When Big Kid was still in DEP he mentioned that some of the other recruiters were not as on the ball with paperwork. At A school most of his classmates were fresh out of high school. They said the recruiter told them," You're going nuke." They had no idea what they were really getting into.

I didn't want boy #2 talking to someone that was going to try to sell him sunshine and rainbows. He needs someone to tell it like it is. He spoke with the recruiter last week. He went in thinking about corpsman (he's going to school to be a radiological technician). Corpsman are at 100%+, so now he is thinking law enforcement (MA I believe it is in the Navy). He is going back Friday to talk to the recruiter again.

He said that the recruiter is scared of me. When he saw Big Kid's younger brothers at a local college fair, I told him to back off. This mama is not running a 2 for 1 special. Apparently, he remembered that. Says he'll lock the doors and run out the back if #3 shows up.

3Bs- My son wanted Coprsman as well, but it was full. My middle son wants to go to the Academy and my youngest doesn't want to cut his hair, so he's safe for a little while. LOL

  • WearsLargeHats

3B, that is the funniest thing I have read today!

  • kai cat

3B'smom - LOL! Such a funny story! How old is your youngest? LOL - maybe he will do airforce?  :)

  • TahoeZephyr

WearsLargeHats - indeed, it does seem that a certain percentage of these new sailors who start in the Nuke pipeline do end up in DTP for various reasons.  Despite the fact that I hear great relief in my son's voice since being relinquished from the intensity of the Nuke program, I am feeling a bit stressed about what happens now...not having tangible information on a site like this one to help me understand his new "day in the life" is creating a bit of a void.  Perhaps others on this site would find some reassurance if a discussion was started?

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

3B's I have a whole new appreciation of you. hahahhaa I literally laughed out loud here at work. You obviously didn't need my advice. You got this! You go, girl!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Thursday!

3B's - lol!  I can just picture the recruiter running in the other direction!  Agree, you got this!

Good news - my mom got the house!  Now the fun begins lol! Anyone with spare time on their hands hahahaha.  That's my crazy laugh as I'm trying to figure out how we are going to get this done :-/  arghhhhhh

TahoeZephyr - I found a discussion on DTP and bumped it.  Maybe you could post your info there too.

  • Chipmunk

Good Morning my friends - I hope your day is starting out well. I have sunshine which always makes me more productive!

Kai Cat & MoMom, thank you for your kind words yesterday. I just enjoy helping out other people and it is helpful to me as well. I must balance my time here and with others and yesterday required more attention to family than I thought, so just now responding.

TahoeZephyr - I am glad you are posting and yes starting a discussion about DTP sounds great. I was surprised at the numbers you mentioned in DTP. It sounds like your son is doing a lot of the same things that those sailors who were THU or INDOC for a time did - whatever task was needed. My son managed to pipe up and say he enjoyed organizing things so he got put in charge of the M&M room. He thoroughly enjoyed it, even when during the hurricane evac, he said he was play virtual Tetris trying to stuff more items in!

3B's - Thanks for sharing! Keep us updated and lots of hugs!

  • Chipmunk

Hawkeye Nuk, SubMom and Freebird!  Welcome to our group!! Be sure to ask any questions and share with us your Navy journey if you haven't already.

B'sNukeMom - That is wonderful news. I know I commented that I still feel like a newbie here, but I am definitely not young on the age side. I could be joining your mom in a couple of years!!  The hardest thing with our parents and our own stuff is the letting go!! And saying good bye, but also recognizing what might actually have value - and I am not just talking monetary. My prayers for you. I still have items in storage that I got from my parent's house and two properties locally I just inherited this last year, from my childless aunt and uncle that has to be sorted through, and awaiting for the sale of one.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

B'sNuke, congrats to Mom on the house! I bet she'll love it. You do have a daunting task ahead but you'll get there. It will be great to have her in a place where you know folks will look out for her. My bunco group says we all want to be in the same nursing home and continue to play bunco when we're too old to live at home.

Chipmunk, sounds you have had some challenges in recent years. Life goes in cycles. Prayers as you work through all those memories.

My children are keenly feeling the decline of their dad (he suffers from ALS) so as a gift to him my oldest daughter converted old VHS family videos to digital and created a private YouTube channel of them. Her dad literally can't move a muscle so he spends most days watching tv. I wonder how he likes them. I watched a few then had to quit. Too many bittersweet memories. I don't envy any of you going through years of mementos.

  • JayDee659

B'sNukeMom that's wonderful about the house.  I still have not cleaned out my dadsd place and he died in 2006.

I'm headed in to see my ortho. Going to try some PRP shots. They sound creepy but I have heard good things!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

JayDee - oh I will be interested in seeing how the PRP shots work for you.  My mom has a bum arm and this might be something for her to try.  Good luck with it and please update us!

NancyJo - that was really special of your daughter to convert those videos for her dad .  I'm sure he really appreciates it. And yes, I'll bet that's bittersweet :(

  • NonnaB

My son is finally off sea duty, 5.5 years, and will now be teaching in GC. His boat's motto: Fortune favors the bold; and he was thrust into a most unlikely path but acquitted himself well. Not many nukes have their boat crash on their first underway - gave this Momma a whole new perspective. That being said, Mr. B did cruise on this boat, fulfilling his bucket list when he did not know his bucket list would be so short. So many memories right now! Love to all you Moms.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

NonnaB - that's good news for his shore duty - I hope he's happy with it!  Hmmmmm that seems like an interesting story of his boat crashing on an underway.....not sure if you can share.... but I'll bet it's a doozy!  So glad that Mr. B was able to take a cruise. I'm sure that is a good memory for your son!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Don't forget to wear your RED tomorrow!

  • Lazerguppie

What's the deal with red? I know for heart month (Feb) it's for heart disease. Sure this is not that! LOL

  • JayDee659

    Remember

    Everyone

    Deployed

  • Rime

I know I've seen the answer to this before, but can't remember, and going back through the discussions to find is not easy! So pardon my asking, but can anyone tell me about what time the power school ends so we can try to book a car rental for the remaining and next day? And is there a 'must see' site and a 'Fantastic' Mexican or Italian restaurant to try in or around Charleston? Thanks so much! Only about a month to go! ;-)

  • Rime

Power School Graduation, that is! :-)

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

NonnaB, so happy to hear your sailor is going to be stateside now. My son will have that same assignment come spring. I bet our boys will work together. How nice is that! Your sailor has had quite the eventful career so far. Let's pray that going forward it will be smooth sailing.

Yup, got my red on! As a mother of one of the deployed, I appreciate it especially. Thanks for the support, Sea Sisters!

I had emailed my son and wondered about the weather in the area of the Pacific they are sailing through. I postulated tropical pleasantness. He responded warm, yes, but not tropical pleasantness. He said more like plantation cotton picking. That kid never fails to make me laugh.

    It's Friday, Ladies! Hooyah!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hi all - Happy RED shirt Friday!  I've got my red on too ;-D

Rime - I bumped a discussion up above with some sightseeing info.  I'm sure more will chime in with various suggestions too!

  • PedALqueen4ever

Yayyy! On other side, got upset with Hubby -- he was appointed by our son to do the delivery of this U.S.N young man..-- gave his the address yet he says will wait for his text...-I just responded then, you gotta send that delivery to him .. - finally he took it with him..(Iam trying to remind him my hubby, as of now our son of USN is at fast pace new location + plenty of tasks on duty/schoolworks..-- time hectic for him/energy consuming!)
  • PedALqueen4ever

Will do a one time delivery of certain items to him(just for back ups..good on the go..protein bars..)

Charleston itself is fun to walk around in. There is a very old large tree to visit .

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

AZNukeGma - yes the Angel Oak Tree - here is the link:

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

PedAlQueen -hopefully your husband gets the box sent.  The protein bars are definitely a good idea!

  • The Hammer

Hola Nuke Moms! My son will hopefully PIR on 3/23 and I have a question for you all... I was thinking of getting him a Samsung Gear smart watch for graduation as he has a Samsung phone... but I don't know if they are allowed smart watches in A school. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

  • Chipmunk

Also, can anyone verify this question on cars at GC. My son had told me that sailors are allowed to have their cars when they first get to GC, they just are not allowed to drive them themselves until they reach their proper phase up. Is that correct?

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Mrstkath - no smart watches allowed!  No phones or any technology allowed in the Rickover.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Chipmunk - I think I have also heard that they can have their cars sent but then cannot drive them until they phase up.  (My son didn't get his car until he finished power school so we didn't have any issues.)

  • The Hammer

Thanks for the advice below! I think I'll stick to a standard watch per your advice. Happy Friday!

  • soccermom19

Hi Navy moms - I have a non Navy question and could use some mom recommendations.  My daughter's wedding is upcoming and it is a destination wedding.  She is traveling with her wedding gown.  She asked me to bring a steamer in case there are any wrinkles.  Does anyone have any recommendations.  I have never had one before.  Any help anyone wants to offer would be most appreciated

    Happy Friday everyone!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

The Casio G shock is a popular watch.

  • WearsLargeHats

Mrskath, that is a really good question. Off-duty they can have anything legal, but given the degree of trouble they can get in with unauthorized devices in secure areas, such as Rickover where they study, a sailor would be ill-advised to just assume a smart watch is OK. (My guess would be no.)

There have been recent stories about fitness trackers exposing too much information, so policies about wearables may be evolving.  Smart watches, like smart phones, are always similarly exposing potentially sensitive information. We trade security for convenience and features. (Google always knows where you are.)

Thinking beyond the training pipeline, the first obvious consideration is that nukes, even in a carrier, work below the waterline surrounded by thick steel. Zero bars! So it will just be a watch. As far as security, such policies are set by the command. Something like a smartwatch might be less of a problem than a phone, since there is no camera, but I wonder about the microphone. When we visited our son's submarine, we had to put the phones and cameras in a bin at the quarterdeck (to be guarded by a nice young man with a M4). If I had a smartwatch, I would have asked about it, or just put it in the bin too.  If I remembered I was wearing it.

  • Chipmunk

B'sNuke - Thanks, my son won't get a car till Prototype, but the question came up elsewhere and I wanted to verify.

Mrstkath, the RTC NEX has a selection of Casio's and there is a G-shock (I think) they can have. I do believe it needs to be black.

Soccermom19 - We usually just hung dresses in  steamy bathroom, for dance competitions. I think the simple steamers that have more of a horizontal head would work well, though.

  • JayDee659

Chipmunk my daughter says that is correct regarding the car, at least as of 2 years ago.

Mrstkath no smart watches are allowed in secure areas. They spend most of their time in secure areas. Maybe the ever pooular G Shock is a better choice

  • The Hammer

Thanks for the advice! Next question... can I shop at the NEX? I work near the one on Green Bay Road in Great Lakes... but I didn't think I could go in.

  • DSmom

I wasn't able to -- only military can -- retired & active duty. Veteran can't -- at least my husband -- a vet -- wasn't able to. But his sister (retired) can and do. I don't know about Active Reserved.

No cars during A-school. They apparently can have them during power school and prototype though.
  • JayDee659

DSmom, my daughter had her car almost all of A school after she phased up as did most of her friends.

Mrstkath you have to be active, retired or a DOD employee to shop at the NEX.

  • SubMom

Mrskath - They have to have a black watch and if I remember correctly they are issued the Casio in boot camp. No electronics of any kind in certain areas.

Chipmunk - I think you asked about having a car. Our son said they walk everywhere 1st phase (can possibly have a bike?). Car is permitted 2nd phase and 3rd phase they are living off base. Not sure how entirely accurate this is but it might help regarding a timeline.

  • AZ2OH2IL2UT

My son had his car during A school. Once he phased up, he was able to get a pass for it on base and drive whenever. This was at GC. He graduated from A school in December 2017. We had his car shipped there.

Can't help with any watch information. I just know my son bought a regular watch to wear. Nothing fancy at all.

  • soccermom19

Do I understand correctly that they must live off base once they get to A School?  Or is it just optional?

  • JayDee659

Soccermom19 they have to move off base for prototype,

  • PacNWmom

Soccermom - They are required to have their own transportation (some have a motorcycle) in prototype when they are required to live off-base. Not sure if married sailors are required to move off base. My sailor bought a car just before he graduated from Power School.

Anyone here in the San Francisco Bay Area? I'm going there for a few days next week and would love to meet up with anyone who lives close-by! If you leave me a pm let me know on this board so I know to check my messages.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

PacNWmom - you're going to be so close, yet so far from me :(

  • 3B'smom

Rime - We haven't come across a fabulous Mexican or Italian place. If you are feeling adventurous, try the duck breast sandwich and fries fried in duck fat at the Tattooed Moose. It's kind of a funky place that was recommended by a friend of ours. I'm not really a fan of duck, but it was pretty amazing. It has kind of a pub type atmosphere so I wouldn't recommend it for young kids.

  • Chipmunk

Just got off the phone with my son - nice long call and he was pleased with his Digital 2 test (still waiting on regrade scores.)

Re: Car question - thanks for confirming what he told me - Cars are allowed at A school, but the sailor can not drive until they have passed Phase 1. And yes, they have to have transportation for Prototype. At Christmas, mine was already trying to estimate how much to plan for a car when that time came. Currently, he has a bicycle that he rides around on.

Re: Shopping at the NEX - Mrstkath, I mentioned RTC NEX but that may not have been clear. We had to wait after PIR for our son at RTC, so we had a lot of time on our hands, and spent most of it in the NEX there at RTC, not any other NEX. They allowed us to buy things but we had to pay tax, since our sailor wasn't with us, including food, since we waited past lunch time. I just recall seeing a large selection of watches there. My son went to bc with an inexpensive black Casio and the band or something broke, so he had to buy another one. He was fine just purchasing another inexpensive one, and didn't understand the other recruits spending all of their money on an expensive watch! - I don't think he was issued a watch at bc (summer 2017).
