Lazerguppie - Glad to hear your sailor is getting started on his classes. I believe I explained their study hour time/ jargon in the later sections of Nuke A school daily schedule... discussion. If nothing else, I try to find out or have my son let me know when his tests are.

Kai Cat - so glad to hear that your son is having a much better experience in his new division. As far as the PFA - I don't know how far back they are grandfathering some of the SR that have been at bc and whether or not they will be putting them in FIT or not. There have been a couple of Mom mention on BC group that their sons did not make their run on PFA for the initial requirement and will be separated, but I think they all arrived at RTC in Feb.

Hopefully, you get some answers soon, all the best for you and your son.

  • Nukelukesmom

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions on restaurants. I am going to email these to him tonight. He just started T Track this week and I know he will be going off base more during his time off than he was during A school so these will certainly come in handy. Navy Moms rock!

Tracie - I would suggest sending the laptop priority mail in their flat rate box. Check with them to see if this works out the best way, but you can send up to 70 lbs. I think. Also, it gives you insurance and tracking and you can add insurance. My pkgs usually get to GC in 2 days +1 day for mail room to process.

kai cat I just found this article which seems to indicate that failing the PFA will NOT result in separation but it may only apply to enlisted personnel and officers who have already completed basic training? I will keep looking!

  • momterp

kai cat Here is the latest on passing the PFA during boot camp:

    http://navyformoms.ning.com/group/bootcampmoms/page/physical-fitnes...

It seems from reading this that your SR's previous division leadership may not have been giving correct information.

I hope he gives it all he's got--that's the best any of us can do!

  • kai cat

Tracie - Just because it is a laptop - I would recommend fedex or ups - they have (especially fedex at kinkos stores) special laptop boxes where they pack it for you if you buy the box and if it gets damaged they cover it.

  • kai cat

momterp - thanks for the info! relieves my anxiety!

  • NNLori

My son and his friends have gone to a Mexican restaurant in Charleston that they love. I will have to get the name from him when I talk to him later and I will let you all know!

  • workingatit

My sailor is doing good so far and about to graduate A school. However, we have been encouraging him to attend church or chaplain services and he is not interested and says his navy work is more important. Anyone else encounter this? We Raised him Catholic and he happily received confirmation 3 years ago.  i know it is his choice but wondering if other encounter this?  We definetly hear how important the Navy Nuke job is to him.

  • workingatit

Any recommendations for Charter fishing in Charleston area?

  • JayDee659

workingatit, while my daughter joined a church near the base, she found that due to her study/work schedule she had little time to attend regularly.  She said that she felt bad telling them she couldn't be there for functions.  Is it possible that your sailor just doesn't want to have to deal with the issue/guilt of not being able to attend regularly?  As they move along the study demands and schedules become more demanding.  While the local churches seem to understand that these kids from the base are under a lot of pressure, it may be hard on the kids to decline invitations.  Just a thought.

  • Rebecca J

workingatit.....we raised our son in the church too and since joining the navy he hasn't been attending anywhere. I have to believe he'll find his,way back. I think it's so important . When I mention it to him he tells me not to worry about it. So I just pray

    Hi all - Happy Monday!

kai cat - I am so happy to hear that your SR has been moved to another division and things are better!  March 9th will be here before you know it.  Keep encouraging him and sending positive letters!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

workingatit, after sending 4 kids out into the world after thinking I've given them a solid spiritual foundation, only 2 attend church and my sailor isn't one of them. (Catholic here too) JayDee's point is a good one... they keep the sailors very busy and working worship in can be a challenge. Keep him mindful of the work of our Lord in his life then give it to God. And pray for him always, as I'm sure you do.  Don't give up hope that he finds his way back. <hugs and prayers>

  • Chipmunk

Workingatit, Rebecca, and some of the others. My son had shared with me that he and some of his friends had been doing a Bible study on Wed. I asked him last week how that was going, since I knew the 5K was in the afternoon now. He said, that one has been more difficult to keep up with, but that the chaplain or a chaplain assistant had been doing a study during lunch time on Tuesday (I think), and currently they were going through the book of Acts.

It is very difficult for these sailors to spend time in formalized church attendance, but as a mom, I have to focus my encouragement on my son's relationship with God, and his heart. We have discussed church attendance, and I have even been given some local church information. But for now, I am okay with the Bible study. Just getting that fit into their day, can be difficult. I also send encouraging emails with a scripture or short recap from our Sunday morning message here at home. A a devotional that they can read on their phones before bed or something will encourage them.

Attending church is about building each other up in our faith, and encouraging us to stay the course, and share the Good News and God's love. Encouraging our sailors to find those like minded as themselves among their shipmates will go a long way to helping them stay strong in their faith, not to mention your continued prayers for them.

toriA2424 - Welcome to Nuke Moms - we hope you will share a little about where you are in your Navy journey. My son is currently in A school at GC (Goose Creek, SC).

  • Rebecca J

Chipmunk and Nancyjo....great advice. I'm praying my son meets someone on his sub who can be a good influence on himas far as continue his faith.
Has anyone in this group ever been to a sub commisioning? We are attending the commisioning of USS Colorado on March 17. I'm looking forward to seeing the inside of a sub up.close and personal. My sailor leaves friday for his first deployment. I'm looking forward to hearing what it's really like to be on one. I know he is not looking forward to being a nub (non useful body). That is something they all must go through.
  • workingatit

thank you Chipmunk, NancyJo, Rebecca and others for the encouraging comments!  I will try to be positive and maybe later on he will continue his faith. Thank you all for the encouraging comments.

Rebecca J, would love to hear about the sub commissioning later. I have never been inside or near a real sub.

  • Rebecca J

I will definitely report back after the commissioning. I'm really looking forward to seeing where my sailor will.be spending his time out at sea. At least I'll have a little better picture of what it will be like.

Please share a little with us of where you are at in your Navy journey. My son is currently in A school at GC training as an ET.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Rebecca J - can't wait to hear about the commissioning.  The only sub I've been on is the one at Patriots Point (oh and the one at Disneyland!).

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Another new member!  Welcome to Chantal!

  • CSW

Our son says there's going to be a new nuke rate for the Columbia class subs Boomers that are suppose to start coming on line 2021.

  • Rebecca J

B'sNukeMoM....haha I was on that one in Disneyland too. Years ago. I foot all about it. I bet USS Colorado will be a bit different. I know I won't be able to take any pictures. You have to put your phones in a bin before boarding.
  • Rebecca J

Forgot ... I hate auto correcting

Good evening everyone. I know sailors have to have a buddy when leaving the base. How does it work if my parents want to pick him up and take him to dinner? Also, he will hopefully be classed up by the time they visit - is it reasonable that he could have dinner with them during the week?

  • DSmom

soccermom -- from what I can tell, they move off base before/during prototype, they are still housed on base during power school.
  • AZNuKeGma

    Submom

we took our grandson off base last summer with no problem.

we met & picked him up at the Nex. And he got to stay one night with us at hotel ☺️

  • Chipmunk

SubMom, I don't know how to answer the first part of your question - but if your son has actually "classed up" and started his studies when your parents visit, then finding time during the week for dinner may be trickier, depending on what his required study time is. It will be best for them to have phone contact and also know that your sailor won't be able to call until after class and also PT or the 5K run which currently, I believe they are doing every Wed afternoon.

  • soccermom19

Hi moms,  Anyone out there with a nuke in A school whose class is 1803-T?

  • 3B'smom

    Submom-

As long as he is out of phase 1 it should, theoretically, be fine. As Chipmunk mentioned, his required study time could be an issue.

  • Rebecca J

Submom, when my son was in A school he was able to.come out to dinner with us once during the week in Charleston. We had to eat later...closer to 7. We had him for a few hours. It was so great. During the weekend they can actually stay with you at the hotel
  • SubMom

AZNukeGma; Rebecca; 3B'smom; and Chipmunk - thank you so much for your help! I agree that if he has classed up by then it might be tricky to leave for any extended amount of time. If time is short I know they can head to Subway :) I know at GL they had NEX off base and a smaller one on base. Is it the same at GC? If so, does it matter which one they meet him? Hope everyone has a great day!!

  • CSW

Rebecca J you should be so proud to be present at the commissioning. Enjoy the experience and please let us know all about it!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Tuesday!

SubMom - There is a large NEX and a small NEX.  We met our son by the small Nex in GC.  It's off of Fletcher - near the tennis courts.  You come in off Red Bank Rd and make a left on Fletcher.  Pass the Dive Bar and Grill and the bowling center and you'll see the tennis courts on the right.  Turn on that little street and park there.  Usually they will come walking out of the trees by the tennis courts.

Please feel free to jump right in with any questions you may have and be sure to look at the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page.

  • Rebecca J

CSW, just got our invitations in the mail yesterday. We are so.excited. I'm also looking forward to hearing about my son's first month on a sub! I will.definitely let everyone know.
Yesterday my husband asked me how I knew so.much about the navy nuke life...of course I told...this group!
  • Tracie

Thanks for all the mailing info. Got it all in the mail to him today.

My husband and I ended up driving to his PIR instead of flying so now we have credits on airline. We are planning to use them to go to GC. He hasn’t classed up yet so would it be better to go sooner or hold off for awhile longer? I know he’ll have full schedule when he does class up or should we wait until he completes A school and go for that?

  • DSmom

Graduations are a big deal. Get to show off family, see a little bit of the area they reside in -- normally you aren't allowed anywhere near it -- and you can meet their friends and instructors. If it is either/or, I'd go to the graduation as he will have time off afterward and no stress so can spend more time with you. That's just me though.
  • CSW

DSmom I agree with you. Save it for graduation...but make your hotel reservations now.

And depending upon the date make reservations for places closer to the beach!

  • Rebecca J

Tracie, I suggest power school graduation. That was awesome. My son told us not to come to A school graduation.
  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

PowerSchool is a big deal. A school and proto are much smaller. We were only able to swing PIR and PowerSchool but all 4 are nice if you are able. We needed to prioritize.

  • SubMom

B'sNukeMom - thank you for the information on the NEX my parents need to go to. I know they will be very excited to my son :)

  • SubMom

on another note - has anyone's sailors been put on night shift? Our son said he was working nights all week. Not sure if he is standing watch or actually on a project (he has not classed up yet)

  • Chipmunk

SubMom - Your son may be doing his UI's. (Under Instruction). All of the sailors have to learn how to stand watch in the various areas of NNPTC. When my son was INDOC it was recommended that he get all of his UI's done and certified before he classed up, so he didn't have to focus on having to get his certification while trying to study. So, he did. He still has to stand watch at times now, but there isn't the pressure to "get it done." So, your son is probably working on getting the required number of watches towards his certification, about 13 - 15, not exactly sure.
