Submom, when my son was in A school he was able to.come out to dinner with us once during the week in Charleston. We had to eat later...closer to 7. We had him for a few hours. It was so great. During the weekend they can actually stay with you at the hotel
AZNukeGma; Rebecca; 3B'smom; and Chipmunk - thank you so much for your help! I agree that if he has classed up by then it might be tricky to leave for any extended amount of time. If time is short I know they can head to Subway :) I know at GL they had NEX off base and a smaller one on base. Is it the same at GC? If so, does it matter which one they meet him? Hope everyone has a great day!!
SubMom - There is a large NEX and a small NEX. We met our son by the small Nex in GC. It's off of Fletcher - near the tennis courts. You come in off Red Bank Rd and make a left on Fletcher. Pass the Dive Bar and Grill and the bowling center and you'll see the tennis courts on the right. Turn on that little street and park there. Usually they will come walking out of the trees by the tennis courts.
CSW, just got our invitations in the mail yesterday. We are so.excited. I'm also looking forward to hearing about my son's first month on a sub! I will.definitely let everyone know.
Yesterday my husband asked me how I knew so.much about the navy nuke life...of course I told...this group!
Thanks for all the mailing info. Got it all in the mail to him today.
My husband and I ended up driving to his PIR instead of flying so now we have credits on airline. We are planning to use them to go to GC. He hasn’t classed up yet so would it be better to go sooner or hold off for awhile longer? I know he’ll have full schedule when he does class up or should we wait until he completes A school and go for that?
Graduations are a big deal. Get to show off family, see a little bit of the area they reside in -- normally you aren't allowed anywhere near it -- and you can meet their friends and instructors. If it is either/or, I'd go to the graduation as he will have time off afterward and no stress so can spend more time with you. That's just me though.
PowerSchool is a big deal. A school and proto are much smaller. We were only able to swing PIR and PowerSchool but all 4 are nice if you are able. We needed to prioritize.
on another note - has anyone's sailors been put on night shift? Our son said he was working nights all week. Not sure if he is standing watch or actually on a project (he has not classed up yet)
SubMom - Your son may be doing his UI's. (Under Instruction). All of the sailors have to learn how to stand watch in the various areas of NNPTC. When my son was INDOC it was recommended that he get all of his UI's done and certified before he classed up, so he didn't have to focus on having to get his certification while trying to study. So, he did. He still has to stand watch at times now, but there isn't the pressure to "get it done." So, your son is probably working on getting the required number of watches towards his certification, about 13 - 15, not exactly sure.
B'sNukeMom, I had to tell you that I made the Crack Chicken the other night in my IP. It turned out good but we liked it better the next day. My husband said it would be better if I'd added grapes after it cooled, I was thinking it needed something crunchy like celery & onions. Men.
Happy Valentine's Day to all of our recruit and sailor loved ones!! Even with our loved ones away, may your heart still swell with love for them and share that over the miles and also to those close to home!
bigsky21 - cute card - it reminds me of a big Valentine book I had when I was younger, with vintage images like that. That was back in the day when you cut out your Valentines!
A reminder for new members - the time frame for nuke school is posted under the 12 pages on the right -
"Your Sailor's Schedule Upon Arrival to GC".
Here's a quick rundown:
A School - MM - 14 weeks, EM and ET - 24 weeks (in Goose Creek only)
Power School - 24 weeks (in Goose Creek only)
Prototype - 24 weeks (either in Goose Creek or Ballston Spa, NY). When they get to prototype they will have to move off base and they get BAH (housing allowance).
ELT School - after prototype (only for MM's - if selected) - 13 weeks
Welder - after prototype (only for subs - if selected) - 13 weeks
I don't know if this question has been asked- but if they buy a car in SC, can they have it registered in their home state? And do they have to go to their home state to do so.
That is a great question...If a car is orderedonline via phone/electronic paperwork's...I leieve therly do service delivery also if car dealer is from home state then, it is registered through the dealer inclusion fee for DMV registering...
There is a lot of flexibility on car registration for military. I'm pretty sure if they buy it in SC they can register it there. SC has pretty low taxes and fees, and I don't think they require inspection. Or there is probably a way to register in their home state by mail, but the requirements would vary by state. Most states do not require military to change their car registration and/or driver's license. Hawaii is a notable exception.
My son bought his car in SC and registered it there. When he moved to Ballston Spa for proto his registration came due and he registered in NY. When they moved to CA they registered there. I didn't ask questions. I figured he knew what he was doing.
Just one comment on the cars - we found it was less expensive for insurance for my son to stay on my policy...in order to do that, he has to keep his license and registration in Florida (we have both of our names on his car). Until he has a permanent address somewhere else the insurance company will let him stay on mine. That may vary from state to state, just check with your insurance company.
I am so sad over the mass shooting in Florida yesterday - it breaks my heart. I didn't sleep well last night - it reminds me of the Las Vegas shooting and it's making me so anxious. :( I just wish all this would stop......sigh
On a positive note I have been enjoying the Olympics.
Any issues with keeping your sailor on your auto insurance policy? Our insurance rep. informed us most companies don't want to insure young people who are in the service if they f ind out because they tend to all pile in a vehicle together. My son is looking to get a vehicle pretty soon and I was wondering if we needed to try and find an insurance company in SC? Any suggestions?
Our son left our policy and switched to USAA and has never looked back. He's had no issues with them. He got them when he went to prototype in NY and then moved to VA. He also has renters insurance through them which I highly recommend.
mjnavynukemom, I had no problem keeping my son on my policy - I explained the situation and they told me as long as his permanent address is still the same as mine there was no issue. He checked into getting his own insurance in SC and it would have almost doubled....
Bigsky- how old was your sailor? Mine is over 20, so the rates change, according to my agent. I'm just wondering about the logistics of storing the car when he is deployed. I know it's a long time away... but I'm a planner.
lazerguppie, he's 19...turning 20 on March 3rd. That's one reason why the rates were still so high for him to get insurance on his own. He keeps talking about wanting to get something "sportier" lol, or getting a motorcycle too, etc etc....I know he's all grown up now and can do wants he wants, but I keep reminding him that deployment is in his future at some point and he's better off waiting for all that...I know waiting is HARD at 19 lol, but so far he's taking my advice....
bigsky - if it makes you feel any better the Navy does require them to take a motorcycle safety course and they must wear full safety gear (including a helmet - even though the law doesn't require it in SC). They are after all property of the US Navy!
Talking about cars, my son was actually looking at numbers at Christmas and is thinking of leasing a car. Anyone know how that works with breaking a contract? He was explaining his understanding of being able to do that, as active duty, to his Dad. I was just curious, since we have been talking about cars. Otherwise, he will probably just see about buying a used car so that he can sell it before he deploys.
Prayers for those in Florida, and J's/S's Mom thanks for sharing!
Oh, and insurance - I have learned that it depends on state and policies vary from insurance co. to ins. co. I thought I had one I was happy with, only to find out they treat us one way with a daughter who lived out of city during college, and treating us differently with one who is living in another property of mine, but is "commuting" vs. living on campus. Shop around, but I have also heard that for military USAA is the way to go.
Chipmunk, check USAA insurance it’s for military and is reasonably priced. Also South Carolina is high auto insurance so you should put plates and insurance for your state. My son saved a hundred dollars a month by using his Michigan address.
NickSydmom - thanks for the suggestion on the plates and insurance. We probably will use our home state, since that is where we have his permanent address as. And, I will definitely remind him again about USAA for insurance.
Also, thanks for letting us know you changed your name. (I just saw your PM, I will read and respond) I am always impressed with the young women that want to join the military. My daughters were encouraged a lot by recruiters to consider the military, but I don't think any of them thought boot camp was their cup of tea, let alone military life. Congratulations!!
3B'smom
Submom-
As long as he is out of phase 1 it should, theoretically, be fine. As Chipmunk mentioned, his required study time could be an issue.
