Thank you! Looking forward to the adventure. Although, it's been a little heart wrenching so far. My son is graduating Bootcamp Mar 23. He is in DIV 902 thanks again!
mdbatfam, there's a big adjustment for sure. Are you planning on going to PIR? It's fantastic if you can make it. Highly recommended. You will be amazed. Find the boot camp group for your son so that you can keep up with specific info. But stay here too! Nuke is like no other group.
Finally have a minute and wanted to share. On Monday I took my mom to the hospital for an outpatient procedure. While I was in the waiting area I got to talking to a very nice older gentleman and it turns out his father was in the Navy and served aboard the USS Grunion (SS-216) during WWII. The Grunion was sunk at Kiska, AK and all 70 sailors were lost on or around July 30, 1942. The captain of the Grunion, Lt Cmdr Abele had 3 sons and they spent 65 years searching for info about the lost boat. He said they even got the man who was famous for discovering the Titanic’s wreckage involved in the search. It was finally located in 2007. It was very emotional listening to him talk about everything that went on during these years and he said that a book has been written about it “Fatal Dive” by Peter F. Stevens. We talked for quite some time as he told me stories of various sailors on the Grunion. It’s really an incredible story and he said there’s hope that it will be made into a movie one day too.
Here's a couple of links with info about the USS Grunion:
B'sNukeMoM, thank you for sharing that. How amazing that you got to talk to him. I'd like to read that book. It's really so great that you talked to him and got this story.
Rebecca - we talked for over an hour - I can't even begin to explain how moving it was listening to him. Numerous times he got emotional - it just gives me goosebumps thinking about.
KayCee - I am so glad to hear you have power! No power in winter is NOT fun. We had 2 days of rain that melted all our snow (Michigan) and now the rivers are cresting. We will probably be back to snow next week :)
I was reading through all of the posts regarding the lack of communication by sailors and I agree this is the time that they are spreading their wings and "no news is good news". I also think that as hard as it is I know it is helping me to adjust to future deployments where we won't be able to talk to our son.
My grandfather Harlin H Tierney(1909-1985) was the Chief Commissary on the heavy cruiser USS New Orleans during WWII. He saved artifacts from the ships, including military pictures. Menus, cookbooks. The WWII museum in New Orleans recently excepted all documents to their collection.
Telling us that there are rare artifacts from this ship
Question for our Nuke sub sailors.Has anyone thought to ask their sailors if they take Vit D supplements Even here in Az we are deficient due to hiding from our hot sun all the time
B'sNukeMoM - what a special and touching conversation. I imagine he was so grateful to share his story :) Hoping all is well with your Mom.
AZNuKeGma - amazing about your grandfather and that his artifacts are now in the WWII museum. I wonder if I have seen some of them. I visited that museum in NOLA about 4 years ago.
AzNuKeGma - wow, that's pretty cool about your grandfather. And wonderful that the artifacts are in a museum now! As for the Vit D supplements I would definitely suggest they take them. I take them and I live in sunny SoCal!
KayCee - so glad your power is back on - I can't even imagine how cold it was for you ~ I would have packed up and left town lol!
Thank you for asking - my mom is well. Just a little upper GI test as she's been having trouble swallowing. They didn't find anything wrong so that's good. My youngest told her to just chew her food better lol and then the Dr told her the same thing!
Patti - any more news on your son's plans - March is right around the corner!
Good evening. As we are watching Short Track my sailor texts me and says "Good Evening. ICE is hard." Needless to say, I confused my husband and son, until they realized our SN was talking about his classes and not the Olympics or the frozen ice currently outside here.
Good news, he passed his PFA yesterday, two other classes tested as well. It wasn't his best scores, but high enough.
Chipmunk - SO funny! I starting laughing out loud and my other son just staring at me. Ice is hard! LOL - the kind on the ground here and the olympic kind!
Chipmunk, My oldest kiddo and I are watching hockey and literally just finished talking about the hardness of the ice for different events as I read your comment. Hahahaha!!!
Lazerguppie and Chipmunk - glad to hear your sailors are doing well. It is always nice to receive positive news.
PattiP - I too am trying not to be a helicopter mom. My son is only 4 weeks out of boot camp and began classes this week. He falsely set my expectations the week following boot camp..calling all the time. I think we spoke more in that one week than we did his whole senior year in high school! Haha Well, his communication has slowed way down the past week and a half. At first I was attributing it to the fact that he was on night duty, but that ended Friday and still no call. So I made up an excuse to call him. Found out he wanted to spend his last weekend before classes with the new friends he has made. I can't blame him for that. Glad he has connect with others and is settling in.
BsNukeMom - Thanks for the Red Shirt Friday reminder!!
There's a really nice TED talk by one of the sons about how they found the Grunion and what they uncovered. If you're not sure you want to read the book, watch the talk!
Wow SubMom - that parking lot looks more like a lake! So where are you parking??
lazerguppie and Chipmunk - congrats to your Sailors for passing their PFA's. Always a relief and an accomplishment to get that over with each time.
DesertRose - now that your Sailor has classed up, his schedule will be quite full with little down-time during the week. He will have class all day and then mandatory study hours in the evening. Then they have an occasional watch, laundry to do, fit in meals, etc. I rarely hear from my "lack of communicator" - but when I do it is typically Friday evening or Saturday.
Everyone enjoy your day and have a wonderful weekend!
B'sNuke, you're so great. Just like my sister, you can always find someone to talk to and consequently meet the most interesting people. What a profound experience for you. Thanks so much for sharing with us. AZNuKeGma, so cool about your grandpa. The greatest generation!
My uncle served on the ship that captured the German u-boat that is currently on display in Chicago. I had heard the story from my mother and somehow had seen a photo of him taken with a couple of the German sailors from that vessel. When my uncle died that photo was put on the bulletin board they put together of his life's events. His son had never heard that story and was so surprised at that. Those guys never blew their own horns. There are many stories, I believe, that we will never hear but the results of their heroism is immeasurable.
Can I just second all of B'sNukeMom's, KayCee's comments. Thankfully our ice did not melt into as much water as yours, SubMom.
Looking forward to finding the TED talk or the book B's mentioned. AZNuKeGma your comments about your g'pa got me to thinking about my great uncle. He served on the USS Monterey which Pres. Ford also served on. My mother transcribed his diary and I need to pull it out again. I wonder if the Ford Museum would be interested?
Slightly off topic, my youngest son wrote his own take on our current hot topic of gun control - this wasn't an assignment, just his own response. If you would like to read it, pm or comment to me and I will send you the link.
B’sNukeMoM - Lansing might have flooding too from the Grand River (we are north of Kalamazoo). If it were snow I’d have to have a flag on my head to be found!!
Yes, speaking of tax documents...This will be the first year our son is physically elsewhere during tax season. In the past we have filed his taxes for him as he was still living with us. Does anyone have any experience with the process in Goose Creek for sailors to get their taxes filed in an easy manner?
Received news my son has classed up. While he seldom calls, which is good news as he would rarely call me preNavy unless he was hungry, bored, or out of cash, when he does call he is so happy and is really thriving in this new life. Knowing he is positive this is where he is supposed to be sure does help take some of the worry away.
His phone call today consisted of him telling me how he has shiniest boots on base and exactly how he gets the perfect crease in his uniform. Can’t believe this is same child who argued with me making his bed everyday would cause global warming because he would have to eat more food to replace the energy he burned making the bed and by not making it he was saving the planet. Stunning transformation lol
Does anyone know when is the first time these kids will have a chance to come home for the first time after BC then after how much school?
B'sNukeMoM⚓️MM - I live in Okemos - right next to Lansing where Michigan State University is. We are having so much flooding! About half our roads are closed and half of MSU roads are closed also! Does his GF go to MSU?
Kai cat: oh sorry to hear about the flooding. Saw it on the news reminded me of horrible Harvey flooding we are still recovering from down here. Prayers for your community!
SantaBabs81 - Sorry, I was away, I could have asked my son. I have sent several pkgs to him USPS priority mail and haven't had any issue. But none of them had to be signed for. The one time we sent something from Amazon - 2 day, it ended up not being delivered when the UPS would have because I think it was actually MKL Jr, day and the mail room at GC must have been closed or the transfer from UPS to USPS didn't happened due to the gov't holiday. They do have to process the mail there, but I think it gets signed by someone in the mail room. I would check with the PO directly, if that works out.
Sorry to hear about the flooding in various areas and Yes, SubMom - we have had crazy weather as well.
Kai Cat - liberty and leave time will vary from class to class. Some classes had their liberty after A school combined with their time they were able to be off after Christmas, as with my son, so he only has 3 days of liberty (basically just the weekend), but another friend of mine, whose graduation is later has told her that he may have a week after his A school graduation.
It is best for your sailor to check in their class with their class leader.
Tracie - glad to hear your son is doing well, he may have to start some "instructional" chats with fellow sailors to help them with their boots and uniform. Mine says the dress blues are harder to press than the whites.
3B's and AZnuke=I am an aquatic therapist and serve a lot of Vets in my pool (thanks to the Veterans Choice program) and oh, the stories they tell! They are also my hardest working patients and get the best results from therapy.
