Anyone else have a sailor in class #1801 - T? I am planning on attending graduation and wanted to make connections prior. Also, my son texted me approximate dates of their final tests and comp exam.
This literally became an all day project, along with other comments today, but I finally posted a discussion (long and short version) on BC Moms of what PIR is like for those whose sailors fly out of GL to A school. Primarily, I know there are different scenarios and exceptions to the "normal" and I wanted a place to record that and also give Phoenixmom something to save and repost when I turn off those posts to focus on other things.
I am sharing the link here for any Nuke mom members who aren't a part of BC Moms and want to know what they can expect PIR weekend - including the exceptions to the normal.
I'm going to chime in on the non-communicator kids discussion. My nuke is on the USS Tennessee, a boomer submarine, and I have to say he is good about calling just before and just after a patrol. The quality of conversation is often less to be desired though. Last Sunday was my daughter's birthday. My nuke called his sister, which in and of itself was a rarity! After he said Happy Birthday, and we all rambled on a bit (my son just listened, or occasionally said something when directly asked), my daughter told him that since he had called, he should carry on a good portion of the conversation. His response was that he had said what he wanted to say, so his responsibility was over. Yup, that's my son for you!!
Chipmunk - You did a great job on this posting! I really recommend people drive or get a car if possible to have the most flexibility at PIR. My son also told us to meet him at the Chapel - but there were guards standing on the street outside the NEX saying that civilians can no longer go to the chapel (or stand on the sidewalk where the parking lot is that separates the chapel from the NEX). There were a few families waiting outside by the guards because of the new chapel rule.
One very funny thing that my sailor did when we saw him is tell us the 'right" way to fold laundry. It was quite shocking! He took pants, socks, and a few shirts and sat down on the floor and explained it in detail.
I just want to send prayers for every family who is affected by the 2 pilots who passed in the jet accident. I believe we are all affected because it seems to make things so real - that you never know what dangers our loved ones will face.
Thoughts and prayers for those impacted by the F-18 tragedy.
On a brighter note, my sailor contacted us yesterday to confirm his orders are now “hard.” I will now be finding a sub-moms group to join as well. Any other recommendations for groups to join when they head to the Fleet? Are there groups for each boat?
BZ to all those heading to graduations tomorrow. My sailor’s experience was quite different in the pipeline graduation process. He had a typical A school graduation, then we looked forward to the pomp and ceremony of the Power School graduation only to experience another event like A school grad because of severe weather and they canceled the outdoor ceremony. Then by the time he completed prototype they were not hosting graduation ceremonies. Gotta love the Navy. Semper Gumby!

Tulip, the Submoms group is rather quiet, probably because all their sailors are running silent. Nothing to talk about! And there is no group for my nuke's boat. So I came back to my favorite group, Nuke moms!
Sorry -I know I'm doing a lot of talking! But - just an FYI - the photo is my patriotic nail polish I had done for PIR! LOL
Also, just a funny story - We were going over where to put his money in TSP and savings and just reviewing his new bank accounts. My son told me he has "a lot of money" now - and I know he was at BC for about 16 weeks. He showed me how he has about $1800.
I just think it was nice to remember the days before we had kids, and mortgages, and put money in perspective. Because that $1800 IS the most money he has ever had.
Tulip, I agree with Buzzbeck, the sub moms group is very quiet, how fitting. I believe there are groups for each ship/sub my SIL's sub is in dry dock so that group is quiet. I did join it and when I first posted a couple moms piped up but it's been quiet ever since with the exception of a new mom occasionally joining.
I've found the FB pages for the ships are the most helpful for direct information. Nuke Mom's is one of the two places that I "hang out" at the most because my good friends who got my through boot camp and the pipeline are here. And we talk about cows and sunbathing and other important things like that.
JayDee, your sunbathing story! bwaahaaahaa On this chilly, rainy March morning, I will imagine you in your sunny back yard when the delivery dude comes. Man, the memory brightened my morning. Thanks!
Love the nails, kai cat! How appropriate for PIR.
My sailor's ship page here in N4Ms is dullsville. However, the FB groups for his ship are great. JayDee is right about that, as usual.
Was just catching up on the news and read about the crash in Key West. My heart goes out to the families of those two young men - so sad.
I have a question - my son who is ET in A school currently has white stripes. He told me he thinks after graduation the ETs will be red, same as the others. I have been getting him a challenge coin for each milestone and want to make sure I get the correct color. Anyone know if red is correct?
Boy have I missed alot the past few days! I am still catching up. First congratulations to all those who graduated recently and those who are graduating today. Those who are attending graduation, I hope you have a wonderful time with your sailor!
I am loving all the pictures. I do not know where you all find them, but they are great. Thanks for making me smile.
BsNukeMom - I would love to join the FB Nuke mom's page as well. I will send you a message.
My sailor is at the beginning of his Nuke journey and this site has been a wealth of information. He is not big on sharing, so the information that is shared here are great conversation starters.
I hope those in the Northeast weathered this latest storm well, are staying warm, and there was not too much damage.
Hi everyone. ..happy Friday. I haven't been on for quite some time because my settings were all messed up. I think they are finally ok. Today we headed to the commissioning of my sailors boat, USS COLORADO. We are so excited. He will be able to spend 1 night with us on our hotel. We will also get to tour the sub!!!! On a funny note, my son told me if I couldn't get down the hatch to move aside (lol). I'm not that old and feeble. I told him I'd make it down if I have to jump. I will try and get a family shot. So thankful to be going and equally thankful for this group of moms.
BsNukeMom - I just saw your post with the link to the FB admin. That's what happens when I post before getting caught up on all the posts....sorry.
I am not familiar with all of the functions of this site. If a profile is set to private, how do I send a message? Do I 'add as a friend' or 'invite friends' first? Then will an option so up to send a message? I am on my phone, so the screen my be different and I am just not seeing it.
I will accept help from anyone....thanks from a technically challenged sailor mom . ;)
Let's get this straight, the sunbathing story was Buzzbeck's, she's our little exhibitionist :).
Rebecca J have fun today, what an awesome experience!
I was watching part of today's PIR. Darn, I still tear up when I hear them sing "Anchors Aweigh". All those bright, fresh faces. It was fun to watch though, when I was at PIR I was so focused on getting a hold of my daughter that I could barely sit still and watch the ceremony.
Thanks for the RED shirt reminder. It hit a little closer to home as I learned in another group about the helicopter crash in western Iraq and seeing the info on Military.com just made it all the more real, as I tried to reach my sister and find out that hopefully my nephew wasn't on it. I didn't think it would affect me so, but I could hardly finish the voice msg. Prayers for all.
I was going to respond to some others but I think I am signing off for the moment.
Anyone have the answer to bigsky's question? (I don't know about ET's. My son was an MM and like she said his stripes were red.)

BigSky21 - I will do my best to remember and ask my son tonight. His roommate is in PS now, so hopefully he will know if no one else replies.
Rebecca J - Enjoy, enjoy!!!
DesertRose - Glad B'sMom can help - I don't use my phone, but I had trouble when I first was trying to figure out how to invite someone. Be sure you are signed in to N4M or it will most likely show as private. Also, you should be able to send a comment when you invite someone to be a friend.
B's - thanks for the kind words regarding the post and also concerns for my nephew. I stopped and made about 3 phone calls to my family, till I got ahold of someone. That is the type of helicopter he works with but I found out he is on the other side of the world. Of course if I was on FB, I would know but I can't keep up with that either.
I don't know if the top insignia is correct for Nuclear, but it does seem that once they become a petty officer, that their colors change from these two links.

Bigsky21 - when my son called last night, I asked him to check the stripes (I believe E4 are chevrons) of his roommate who is in PS now. He confirmed what ProudOfK said - navy/black for the dress whites and red for the dress blues.
Annag17 -I opened my computer back up before heading to bed and saw you joined, welcome aboard. How soon will your love one be arriving in GC? Is he still at BC?
