Hi all - Happy RED shirt Friday! I've got my red on :)
For anyone who would like to join the Nuke Moms FaceBook group please send me a message on here. (You will have to friend me first if we aren't already friends.) Keep in mind that the FB group is for MOMS only and your sailor must have already had PIR.
The Hammer - woohoo PIR! I'm sure you're having a wonderful time!
momterp - ugh - so disappointing that your son hasn't been able to get his mail :( And especially since it's birthday stuff. Happy Belated Birthday to him!
Things must have really changed there lately. When my son was there he never had a problem getting packages - and I always sent the USPS "if it fits, it ships" boxes - I guess we were lucky.
Another reason to join the FB group since there is a mom in GC that personally delivers packages AND takes a picture for you!
I have a question regarding ombudsman contacts. My son will be leaving on a deployment soon, it will be his first. He has mentioned to me that he has made me the contact person for the ombudsman. I have yet to receive any information from her. It concerns me because my son leaves sometime next month and it would be nice to have any information she can give me. Any suggestions as to whether I can find out who she is, and how I can contact her?
Thank you for any information you can share with me. I am doing my best to be patient.
I just checked the tracking on my USPS priority pkg to my son and it was delivered at 10:39 AM Goose Creek, just as it said it would be. I sent tracking # and expected date to my son and also just texted him that it was there so he could check on it. He has said that sometimes it takes them a day to sort the mail.
momc - I don't know anything about deployment yet, but when my son was INDOC at GC he gave me the name and numbers of the ombudsman, I believe their info is online as well for NNPTC. You might check with your son and see if he has been given that information, and contact them directly.
I’m just catching up! Would luv a girls trip! And I’m in Tennessee finishing building our house hopefully in summer. Would luvv navy mom visitors going thru Knoxville, Tn!
Just a reminder to any new members you can join Blue Star Mothers. I've put the link to the N4M page on here and you can find info on what they do and hopefully you can find a chapter in your area:
kai cat - you son's class is right behind my son's class. How exciting! Thing will get really busy for him - if he's anything like my son he will love it!!
Any moms out there going to GC for April 20th graduation? Would love to meet up particularly on the 19th when our sailors won't be available. Let's get together and see the town!!! Please reach out either on this message board or PM me.
Anyone have any idea which airport, O'Hare or Midway, is more likely to be used from RTC to GC A school? My SR is scheduled for PIR on 4/20 and it would be good if we can use the same as we need leave on Sat afternoon.
Mbear99 theres no telling which airport. It's based on what airport the Navy can get good flights at a good price. My Nuke flew out of Midway. We were fortunate enough that Delta moved our flights as a courtesy.
Your Sailor should put you on the sub's obundsman list for her to contact you. In case of emergency or of you have questions you can email her. It is her job to keep you informed as of deployment and and homecomings and mail drops. This one who is new since last deployment is doing a really good job. She even lets family know when the boat comes in from underways. For newer members, an underway is a short out to sea to test equipment and practice maneuvers etc... A Deployment is from 3 months to 6 months out doing what they train for, a mission. Out to their assigned waters. Subs run silent during these deployments.
I was fortunate to go to 2 PIR's. I have twins who joined the navy. One is out now and is a veteran. I think he is in the reserves now. Moved to Alaska, little town by Homer. The other one has a year to go on his sub.
I had my class do a service project through Molly's Adopt a Sailor. The mom of a student at my school works at a daycare. She had every kid make something to send. These are my favorites. They are precious!
My EM landed in Charleston last night around 11:15 and should be nestled in his new room at GC by now. Per advice, I sent him the list of items he might need along with a gift card to the NEX. His flight last night didn't leave until evening... so I spent the whole day at the airport with him... what a great time!!! Now for a day of rest...
The Hammer. I'm so glad you got to spend that precious time with your sailor. You must be so proud of him. My son is also an EM, and just recently assigned to a sub. This site is an an amazing support . Get some rest today.
The Hammer - so glad you were able to have the day with your son at the airport. That is a great idea to send him with a list of things he might need and a NEX gift card!! There are so many different scenarios of traveling from GL to GC which is why it is hard to give exact information. My son's plane left at 6:30 AM and they were landed and waiting in Charleston for transport to GC before we even had made our way out of the suburbs of Chicago. We also checked out of our motel early to be with him and then drive south home. That worked best for us and he was shopping with his division mates Sat afternoon. You live nearby GL, and being able to spend all day with your son having a late flight was a wonderful time for you. He will sleep well and have time to shop today at the NEX. Have a restful day today.
Rebecca J - I haven't had a chance to share BNHs with you. I know that sub deployment is hard on both our sailors and their families. It hit me last night when I was texting with my son, had been on the phone with him in the morning and also had email from him. This will be all different in another year when he is finished with school and out on the fleet. May God's peace be with you as your family and son stay the course.
Chipmunk, thank you for your words of encouragement. This journey is a difficult process. Any type of communication with them is like gold. Have a good Sunday.
3B'smom - what a fantastic project. Those handmade cards will bring warm, happy smiles to many sailors! Thanks so much for sharing.
Enjoy your Palm Sunday everyone! I am thankful for all of you and the amazing support and information here! This Navy journey is every bit a rollercoaster as described by the seasoned Mom's - and to think I'm only in the beginning of the ride. So appreciative of this group!
Going to see my sailor at the end of this week. We will only have 2 nights and a day, but that's okay! I have Easter treats for him and I made him a blanket with blueberry yarn (he is disappointed he does not get to wear blueberries), after reading on here blankets are hard to come by.
BlancheMarie, thank you for your Sailors service and for your insite. My son is in Power School so I have yet to experience deployment but your text made me tear up. I appreciate the one word text and I understand the neverending support of the Navy Moms. So glad to be a part of this!
My sailor arrived at GC late Saturday night. He's pretty happy to be rooming with a sailor who is halfway thru power school as he has been answering a lot of questions for him. This feels like sending him off to college! I don't have the anxiety that I felt during boot camp yet... which is wonderful! Happy Monday!
lazerguppie - enjoy your visit with your son! I'm sure he'll like the blanket - and I agree, I like the blueberries better too!
BlancheMarie - haha, gotta love the text message! Short & sweet lol. (this almost fits!)
The Hammer - glad you got to spend the day with your son before he flew out. Now the real fun begins!
3B's - Oh I love the cards - thank you so much for sharing!
We're still trying to get my moms house ready to sell. We're finally getting closer - almost have everything out of the old house (but that doesn't include the garage or sheds yet!). She's completely in at the new house and loving it. It's been making for some long weekends though.....
B'sNukeMom that text statement must describe my SIL. He's really into cars and on Saturday there was a nicely restored El Camino parked next to us. So I took a picture and sent it to him with a brief note asking how he was (our daughter is on an underway). Crickets. Sigh, at least I tried. Hopefully next year will be better.
B's Nuke, the house selling is grueling, isn't it? I'm so glad she's enjoying the new place! When my folks retired to town from the farm that they had lived in for 40 years together, we had many hands (9 kids after all, plus spouses) and it was still massive. It was the huge farmhouse, the barn, a variety of sheds, and then just stuff. Gah! That was also the house my dad grew up in so you have to factor in the grandparents stuff that was just too special to toss.
So great to hear about the PIRs and other progress our little sailors-in-training are achieving. Well done, Mamas!
The Hammer - yes their time at GC is more like them being off to college, at least for us moms and for them, probably 3x the study intensity of most college students. It is helpful to have a roommate with some experience to help the new sailors along.
Lazerguppie - enjoy your visit with your sailor. I am sure he will appreciate the blanket!
B's Nuke - I can empathize with you on preparing a parent's property for sale!! We managed with my parents, but this spring and summer I will be working on clearing out my aunt and uncle's!!
JayDee - You might want to check with your daughter's MIL - she may not have any text from her son and so your crickets response might be viewed with envy!
Chipmunk I'm guessing you don't have any married children yet? Checking with his mother isn't worth it, that opens a can of worms that I just don't have time to deal with. It would be nice to hear from him but even if he doesn't bother to respond, I've done my part and been a good MIL by checking on him. He'll grow up eventually, I think.
Ah JayDee - you would think a text about a nice car would at least merit a response - heck, even just a thumbs up emoji would be nice! Maybe he doesn't have a close relationship with his mom so he just doesn't know how to react when you reach out to him (but again a simple thumbs up would suffice!). (Or maybe he did hit his head lol!).Someday he'll figure it out :)
kai cat - school is out the beginning of May and his plan is by the middle to end of May to be moved to MI. We were really hoping to make one more visit to VA before he leaves but right now I don't see that happening :( I'm excited cuz he's coming to CA in a couple of weeks. My other nephew is getting married so B's coming for the wedding. Unfortunately his GF can't make the trip this time - but we will get to see both of them in June in Vegas. One of their Navy friends is getting married there so a bunch of them are flying in. (She's also a nuke, stationed in WA.) So at least I know we'll get to see him a couple of times over the next few months! Not sure when we will get to MI but I'm sure it will happen at some point in time.
NancyJo - yes, it has been grueling. We've spent every weekend for the last month+ helping my mom. Problem is I'm an only child - right now I really wish I had siblings (and their spouses) to help out!. It's been me, hubby, youngest son and sometimes his GF has been able to help out. But even youngest son isn't available both days on the weekend because he coaches track and field at the local high school and they've been having meets. Luckily youngest has been able to go over during the week sometimes so that has helped. Times like these I really wish B was still here!
And I'm so thankful my hubby doesn't mind helping out. He just keeps reminding me that hopefully in another month or so this will all be behind us!
B'sNukeMom, he's hit his head but I think he was dropped as a child.
You'll have to let us know when you head to Michigan. Since that's "home" I'm up there frequently. Maybe Michigan will be kinder to us than Vegas was...
Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page. Lots of good info there. And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have!
JayDee - Actually, I have two married children, and sometimes I get responses from their spouses faster than I do from them. (mostly phone availability issues). I do understand that "in law" situations are not always the greatest. I guess I was just laughing to myself about your little comment and thought it was cute and figured, maybe you actually had more of a response from him than maybe his mother even has gotten! And yes, you are being a good MIL reaching out to him!!
