Boots in the house! One happy momma as I welcomed my sailor home today following yesterday’s Prototype “graduation” and his 10 hour drive home. He will be home for his birthday (although I have a business trip) to spend some Father-son time with my hubby.
Easter blessings to all of you and to our sailors wherever they may be.
Hello everyone! I've added a post on the discussion forum for DTP above if anyone is interested. DTP is now behind our sailor as he headed for GL on Wednesday and reported to base this morning :) Hopefully not a long wait before he classes up for GM A School!
Boots in the house, and I am extremely grateful. The sailors life is a tough one.. I'm cooking and just listening whenever he feels like chatting a bit. Happy Easter weekend everyone.
Hi everyone. Hope all is well. For those that inquired about how I'm doing on my new job, thank you. My first week was very, very busy. In fact, this is the first Good Friday that I can remember not having off, either by taking a vacation day or as a designated company holiday But as I work from home I was able to dye eggs while listening to a conference call and make lambs out of butter, one of my family traditions. Saturday we get food blessed at church and then I visit relatives and have an annual dinner out with cousins. Then Easter Sunday having dinner with family. So a very busy weekend and then the next week on the job with a huge number of To Do's and To Learn. Happy and feeling blessed to be working now.
Thanks everyone on comments about what to wear for A School graduation. I made to sure to tell the new boss when they came with the offer that it was contingent upon me getting off a couple of days for that. So all is good for that. And happening very, very soon.
I’m getting excited for my sons A school graduation also 2 weeks away. So happy for you moms who get to have your sailors home for Easter. I sent mine an Easter basket on Tuesday and he still hasn’t got it. I called and told him it was coming so he knows he is loved and missed. Happy Easter to all.
Does anyone know if the sailors at A school get more money after boot camp (if they are living in the BEQ) for living expenses? Is there an increase in pay for just living expenses? (not E level)
Kia cat - I don’t believe so. When they move off base for prototype they will get some money for living expenses. Or, if they get married and move into married housing there is some living expense money (although, from what I hear, it is almost all absorbed by “rent”).
Happy for those who have boots in the house for Easter - enjoy your time with your sailors.
NickSydmom - I am sorry to hear your son hasn't received his basket yet. I don't know how they handle the mail room, but I have sent my son several pkgs, via Priority Mail and so far he hasn't had any issues. I mailed one last Wed and it arrived in the morning on Friday and my son picked it up that afternoon. I also gave him the tracking number.
I shall pray for the lost Easter basket to be found!!
They all get BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing). When they are in base housing e.g. the BEQ, the BAH pays for that, so it isn't part of their net pay. When they live in private housing, the BAH does show up in their net pay. In prototype, 3 or 4 sailors will usually rent a place together because rent + expenses is less than 2xBAH, so they can put the rest in the bank. My son is talking about doing that again when his sub goes to Bremerton for decommissioning later this year.
Hi Sea Sisters: We had boots in the house for a week, our sailor is back to work now. Like Rebecca J, I cooked and listened. He is working super hard on his Dolphins, and yes the life of this nub sub sailor is very challenging. The break home was good for him. He crammed in: an Army buddy's wedding, skiing, snow camping, clamming. I am totally exhausted, but already miss him terribly. I feel better sharing with my sea sisters, who understand how a mom feels!
Good morning! I hope you all had a blessed Resurrection Sunday. I had an Easter miracle: a call from my son! So happy to hear his voice. (He told me that he doesn’t see the appeal!) He sounded tired, but in good spirits. Halfway through power school. He said it’s going by faster than a school.
He said a lot of families came to spend Easter with their sailors. I hope some of you were able to spend some time with yours, if not in person, then at least phone calls. I can’t wait to see mine in June!
Buzzbeck, so glad to hear you had a nice time with your sailor and that he was able to get some R&R!! I know the time went by way to quickly. How long is a sailor generally considered a NUB? And I have seen others mention getting their Dolphins, but I am not familiar with what that means exactly. Please share. Thanks.
MoMom - I know how special that phone call was for you!!!
B'sNuke - I actually had my graduation outfit picked out - but I was having fun purchasing more traveling clothes that would pack well and work for Charleston weather - good thing I got rain gear, looks like we might have a wet weekend, so now I am adjusting the sightseeing plans. Also found out they are finishing their Spring Break.
Hope all had a very enjoyable Easter with family and / or friends. We were back to cold bitter OK winter wind!! I know those north are done with snow, I am done with cold!
Hi Everybody, I've been off-site for almost a week so tons to catch up on. So happy for all the graduations, visits, and over-all happy news I've been reading! bigsky21, that photo was fantastic! So many fresh and happy faces. Someone said they wanted to see the "after" photo. LOL My sailor would have had the same no-smile deadpan face either way. He does not do happy pictures. Loved this one, tho!
TahoeZephyr, can't wait to hear how GM works out for your sailor! So glad he's getting on with it. Waiting around is for the birds!
B'sNuke, I will also say your graphics tend to make my day so thanks for doing that. I will often pirate the images and put them in emails or on Facebook. You are a gem. Also, thanks for asking about my surgery. Eye 1 was last Wed., eye 2 is day after tomorrow. One time I tried to remove an imaginary contact from my new eye...lesson learned. LOL Just a habit. Anyway, all is well and thanks for asking!
soccermom, so glad the new job is going well! I think these challenges keep us sharp and fresh, even if stress is always lurking in the background. Keep up the good work; sounds like you are doing great. Loved your Easter traditions, BTW.
My son's ship is heading back to San Diego sooner than expected. Yeehaw! He had what the sailors affectionately call the double dragon this deployment. How he missed it the first 2 deployments I cannot imagine. He spent a lot of time between his rack and the head, and (here's where Mama gets irked) was not able to take time away from work. Went to medical and got Imodium and Pepto, then back to work. ggrrrr But he's feeling better now so shrug it off Mama, and let him do his job. He'll be home about 2 wks before the movers come to get their stuff and they will have 30 days to make their way to SC. If your sailors will still be there, Mamas, my sailor might be teaching them! They will stop in Vegas to visit my ex then here to NE to visit the rest of the family. Can't wait to smooch my babies!
Aw NancyJo - the Double Dragon - uh-oh!!!! I just can't imagine trying to work with that going on....Glad he got through it. Even better news that he'll be back in SD a little early so he can help out with the packing for the move - I'm sure that will relieve a little stress for your DIL. I'll bet you can't wait for them to visit :) Good to hear that he will be able to visit his dad one more time too. Yep, I'm sure he'll be instructing for many of the others on here. Glad your first surgery went well and I'm sure the 2nd will be a breeze too. I'll be thinking of you!
NancyJo, I'll bet you're looking forward to that visit. Visits from our sailors are wonderful and part of the fun is the anticipation! Good luck with eye #2. I know you'll be glad when it's done. The worst part for me was the time between the two eyes. Nothing would focus and trying to work just made me ill.
B's, how is your mom doing? Still settling in to her new place?
My sailor is at sea so I did not get to talk to her. I did have a lengthy text exchange with my Nuke-in-Law. He's doing well, has a little dinner surprised for my Nukette when she gets home. His sub will be starting sea trials in the summer. I think my NIL is looking forward to finally getting out to sea.
This morning I woke up to snow and it's supposed to be 80 tomorrow. Good grief. Mother Nature has lost her mind.
NancyJo - How exciting you get to see your son soon! I wonder if he will be teaching my son, who just classed up 1827T. I knohw it is way to early to know though!
Buzzbeck. ...I know how you feel. My sailor left yesterday and I had to fight back the tears. This is going to be a hard year. He won't be back home for months. It will be so much better when he qualifies and earns his dolphins. It sounds so challenging.
Rebecca, take heart. It is very hard but truly it doesn't last forever. It only seems that way in the beginning. It's much better today than it used to be. When I was a little girl at home and my brother was in Japan in the Navy, we had only letters and sending cassette tapes back and forth. One time he sent us a tape and to fill it at the end he recorded "I Wanna Go Home", an old folk tune. We were gathered around the kitchen table to listen and I still tear up thinking about it. Now we have cell phones, computers, and lots of resources. Hang in there, Mamas. It gets better.
ps I suppose a lot of your sailors may get to know my son. I hope he's nice to everybody. I don't know how it all goes in there but not all instructors are nice, and I think part of that is toughening up the sailors, as if boot camp and A school weren't enough. So, if your sailor complains about the mean instructor I hope it isn't mine. :(
I just keep thinking we're all on the same team fighting for the same goal and by the time our sailors get through the nuke program and get on a ship or a boat they've come together to do the right thing for the right reason. While my sailor has met a few who didn't seem to fit, for the most part they've been culled and he's been making relationships that will remain with him for the rest of his life. It's been really wonderful to see how being a part of the Nuke Navy has opened all sorts of new experiences to our sailor.
Nancy Jo, I remember those days. My brother was in the Navy during Vietnam. It was a letter or nothing. I remember watching the coverage of Saigon falling and mom being very anxious. I get that now.
I had a nice surprise on my way home from work. While stuck in traffic my phone rang and it was my sailor checking in after her under way! So glad that she's back.:)
JayDee - woohoo - love the surprise phone calls! My mom is getting settled in nicely - still working on getting the old place ready to sell but the new place is looking good :)
NancyJo - I was so hoping you were going to say that you were heading to San Diego one last time for the homecoming. Wishful thinking on my part! ;-)
Chipmunk: Nub = Non useful body, your label until a sailor gets his Dolphins, I believe.
Nancy Jo: Thank you for putting it in perspective. It helps to know there's light at the end of the tunnel.
Rebecca J: My feelings exactly!
JayDee: so happy your nukette called you! And your NIL woke up and texted you.
Our late winter continues here. Today Mr. Buzzbeck got snowed out of work. I'm still wearing long underwear under my jeans. Some warmer weather would be appreciated!
My son is now settled in at GC and is really liking it! He is rooming with a sailor who is halfway thru power school. He just classed up and is in 1828M. Anyone else have a sailor in this group?
Buzzbeck. ..western Oregon! I bet it's beautiful there. There's only a few states I haven't been to.and that's one of them. I'm in Pa...old man winter does not want to give up here either. Yesterday we had snow, today it's cold and rainy. I need warmth and sunshine!
Patti - that's crazy, but somehow it doesn't surprise me! I hope they get it figured out soon. And I am curious as to if they are still paying him. Is he open to moving anywhere?
Another one of my nephews is getting married on 4/14 so B is flying in from the 12th-15th. I"m so looking forward to seeing him. Unfortunately his GF couldn't make this trip because of school (but we'll be seeing both of them in Vegas in a couple of months). My mom is excited to show B her new place too.
There's an air show this weekend at March Air Reserve Base so the planes have been busy flying over my work this week. It's been pretty exciting. The Air Force Thunderbirds will be performing too.
J's/S's, hooyah!!! Boots in the house for good! Praise be to God! Now, on to real life. Thank him for his service from all of us and best of luck in the future. So many opportunities for our well-trained vets. Interesting about his adjustment to being home. That's good for all of us to know.
I hope that call comes through. Fingers crossed! ps My son gets home from deployment this month and next month moves to shore duty in SC. We are all ready for that, him and his family most of all!
Yes, J's/S's, he will be teaching at PowerSchool. They are happy about the move. They are pretty sure they will live in base housing just because of economics. My son put in the application and last I heard they are just waiting on the final word.
Isn't it fun to see the kids as grown-ups having fun? When I was laid low last weekend my 3 daughters (and the SIL) got together and had a game night. They all told me separately how much fun they had. I'm heartened that with so much family discord out there that my 4 seem pretty tight. I bet your large crew is the same.
So, my memory isn't as good as others here, but you had 3 military, right? Does that mean 2 are now at the end, leaving only 1 sailor? Or 1 marine? Gah! My mind is fried!
Cataract surgery. I have my 2nd tomorrow. I'm the classic "coke bottle" lens glasses girl so even with the new lens I will need correction for the astigmatism but that is minor. I can see out of 1 eye very well! It's funny that between the twilight sleep and the assault on the eye, the body goes into shut down a little bit. All I wanted to do was sleep. But bottom line, it's sweet being able to see.
When I had the 1st surgery my DIL looked it up on YouTube. It ruined her appetite for the rest of the day. LOL She said she thought she was pretty good w/ medical stuff but evidently not eyeballs. I'm deferring the video for myself til I'm done with the whole shebang.
NancyJo I saw my husband's lasik surgery video and it creeped me out. I was fairly coherent for my 2nd cataract surgery and it was more than I could deal with. Thank goodness that's far away in my rear view mirror
J's/S'mom - I am so sorry, I forgot to be on the look out for your sons flying overhead. I was fairly busy last Friday and in several stores shopping, but they would have been flying right over me!!
NancyJo - prayers for your 2nd surgery. My MIL just recently had cataract surgery and as I recall, she mentioned resting and sleeping a lot. She even started letting her dog stay inside with her!
NancyJo- Best of luck with your second surgery. I'm sure all will go well!! Sounds like it will be worth it!! My son will graduate A school in May so it sounds like the timing will work out that your son will be teaching Power School while my son is in. That is fun!! It's nice to have the teacher and student perspective!
I'm very excited because my son was able to reserve a Villa for us for my son's A school graduation! I was afraid they wouldn't have any left but I lucked out! Now he just has to pass everything..lol!! I can't wait to get down there and meet all his friends and see the area!! Anyone else besides GreentoBlue that has someone in 1809T?

Hi all - Happy Tuesday!

NancyJo - will be sending prayers for you tomorrow! I don't think I would want to watch it either (at least until after it's done!)
J's/S'mom - glad you have your marine home now and glad he's adjusted back to civilian life (at least for now lol!). Enjoy!

Welcome to all of our new members!!!

Have a great Wednesday everyone!!
