The back is feeling a little better today - thanks everyone for asking. I just can't lean to the right quickly or it spasms lol! But I think I'll be good to go by the wedding on Saturday.
There's definitely no right or wrong answer to the car situation (except that by prototype they will need one!).
Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page and feel free to ask any questions you may have. (Don't worry - us mom's won't bite lol!)
Hi ladies! So I finally found out that my son will be studying to be a MM after PIR 4/27. I've almost survived bootcamp and am very excited for the new chapter to begin. I've read and re-read the files and feel like I'm fairly well prepared but all advice is welcome and appreciated!
DannysDad - be sure to join the boot camp group and then once you know his PIR date you'll want to join that group too (have your received the official letter yet?). You'll find lots of helpful info in those groups too.
Also, not sure if you are aware there is also a Navy Dad's page. I don't believe their nuke group is as active as ours but still a good source of info:
Hello and congrats to the new parents. There is so much info in this page alone, I keep searching and finding new info, even after 3 years. Where did the time go?
JayDee, I wish I could have gone to Prototype graduation!! Kicking myself. I am hoping we all organize a long weekend Nuke Navy Mom fly in somewhere. I like the Branson idea.
Welcome aboard to all of our new moms and dads, or those that are finding their way along the Navy family path.
NancyJo - safe travels for your sailor. I think mine will class up for Power School before yours is settled but he might still have him for some instruction.
Branson still sounds like a good choice for a get together, at least for those of us in the Midwest area.!
Does anyone know if we can leave our sailor on our policy as a designated driver while he is stationed at GC? The car is currently registered in my husband's name and we would like to keep it that way if possible. Can the car stay registered in our home state or does SC require registering in their state? Trying to save our sailor some hassle and money :)
SubMom, does your sailor have the car in GC? You should check with your insurance company to confirm their policy on kids living away from home. It may depend on the age of the driver and how long they will in their current location. I worked for a major insurer for 10 years and I would think that if the car is registered in your husbands name it should be fine to leave the policy as is, but there may be a time limit for this. My daughter did not have to register her car in SC and has left her registration in our home state. Once again, to be safe, check with your insurer directly.
Submit, our son had a truck (in his name) at GC and kept it registered in TN. He had since sold it and bought a new used car in SC and registered it in TN as well, since he will be in Washington on a sub.
Thanks, B'sNuke! I wasn't sure if the news was out there for everybody yet. I'm so excited for my boy to be back on US soil but I find I'm a little verklempt that he will be saying goodbye to the CVN70. It was such a part of our lives for the last 2 1/2 yrs. My gr-son said the same thing. But having Daddy at home is worth it!
Eyesight clearing a wee bit every day. I'm sure all will be well, and I am really looking forward to wearing eye makeup again. I look 10 yrs older, to me anyway.
Love seeing new folks joining us, men and women alike. This is a great site and we are an equal opportunity support group. Welcome, all!
NancyJo - Oh I'm sure the grand littles will be happy to have daddy home now! How exciting for all of them :) (And I feel you on the makeup lol!)
One ship is returning - the USS Vinson (San Diego) and another is leaving. The USS Harry S Truman (VA) deploys today (this was my sons ship). Godspeed Sailor's!
JDubya'sM❤️M , you will feel like you can breath again after PIR. Once my SR had his phone and could text and call to check in with us, I felt a huge weight lift off my heart.
Proud parent, I didn't expect to feel this way! I knew I would miss him, but he had moved away for college for 2 years so I foolishly thought "eh, this will be no big deal". The lack of communication has almost been my undoing. I keep telling myself that this is just the beginning. You ladies have experienced it so much worse when your child is deployed. Does it ever get easier or do you just learn how to live with it?
Jdubyasmom I personally don't think that it gets easier I honestly think that as moms er get stronger. My daughter is on a carrier and I got weekly calls and emails while she was deployed. There were some periods of silence but not for too long. She doesn't usually communicate during undereays but I think she's pretty busy during those times. Generally she will call me a day or two before they go out and then on her drive home when they return.
JayDee659 - we will be driving the car down to our son next month. Just trying to make sure we do it the correct way. One friend of mine (retired Air Force) mentioned a P.O.A. issued by dad to son so there would be no issues/hassles. if I understood my insurance agent correctly we can keep him listed (no issue). There is even a military clause since he doesn't qualify as a student.
I want to thank everyone on this forum for such an enormous amount of support and information. My son's PIR was 30 March and has been at GC now for 10 days. It was definitely tough not seeing him everyday, but at least being able to text has Benin wonderful. I know he has a long what to go, but I hope to get to know a few of you great Nuke Moms along the way. Oh! and BTW, Branson is totally doable!
I wanted to check in and say hello. No news from my son (no big surprise there). JayDee, I was heartened to hear your daughter's communication strategy; Call before an underway, then again on while driving home. That sounds *exactly* like what my son will do when he gets to that point.
I don't know if I've mentioned on here, but I'm in the midst of a big kitchen remodel. I'm about 2.5 months in and the banging and sanding almost drove me crazy today! Luckily we're to the point where I can really see and appreciate the progress. Cabinets, countertops and flooring are in and look great! Today they started refinishing the upstairs softwood floors, while the contractor worked on trim in the kitchen. I couldn't even do my laundry because they had tapped into that plug for the big power sander. Wish I could invite y'all to the party I'll have over the summer once it's all done! Those in the PNW may get an invite! :D
As some of you may remember, I belong to a meetup group called Pints & Crafts. We meet on Thursday evenings to drink beer and do our crafts (most people knit, some crochet, I cross-stitch). Twice a year we head to the Oregon coast for a long weekend (notice in the NW it's called the "coast", not the "beach"). This is the weekend! I, along with 29 other crafty ladies are taking over 2 neighboring houses for a 4 day weekend. It's going to be so much quieter there than it's been in my house this week! I'll blow kisses to all the sailors out in the Pacific while I'm there!
Love to all my sea sisters! This has been a hard week for me, emotionally. Thanks for helping see me through! mwah!
PacNWmom I cross stitch also. Wish I didn't live across the country as I also enjoy beer! My husband worked several incidents in Oregon, near Tillamook. He said it was beautiful country.
My daughter is decent with communication but can be a little too vague. She takes OPSEC very seriously so we've had to come up with codes. One example is a snapchat of something specific means "leaving on underway". A lot of times they're on duty before the ship leaves, to start the reactor, so they don't get time to call before they pull out.
I accidentally deleted my post. Sometimes I hate phones. lol
PacNWmom - That sounds fun. I knit and crochet. I've cross stitched in the past, so fun. What part of the coast you going to?
Heard from my Nuke yesterday. He's loves Prototype so far, he's still in the initial 7wks. He's told me he's considering subs instead of boats. Hmm... Would be interesting.
Boy could I use some sea sisters tonight. Heard some disturbing things about sub life. I cant talk specifics, but I am very upset. I just hope it gets better. My sailor really isn't a complainer. It took him.a month to talk about it. I knew there was something really wrong. My heart is hurting.

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video:"Importance of Navy OPSEC."
These are some of the rules. Read them and then decide if you can talk about it. From what I understand subs and a world into themselves. You have to live it to understand
Byron's Mom - (or Mom of Byron) - lots to catch up for me today. Glad to hear he is getting adjusted to GC. Depending on how much INDOC time they have some will share more than others, mostly due to schedules.
Welcome to the new members!
PacNWMom - enjoy your weekend. I would love to be on the "coast" again, but enjoyed being at the "beach" with my son. And yes, Branson would be a little far, but OR and WA are beautiful for you all to plan something that direction.
Kbpoobear...thanks. I'll just keep it to myself I guess. There is really no way anyone can help
I'm just hoping it gets better. I will never understand it.
RebeccaJ, I'm sorry to hear that your son is facing some challenges. Hoping that its just a temporary bump in the road. It cannot be easy to be in a sub with so little space and so many people. So far my experience with subs is limited as my SIL's sub is still in the shipyard. Prayers for your sailor!
JayDee. ...thank you. I'm really disappointed that this sort of thing would happen in any circumstance, but I realize while most sailors are decent and somewhat kind to newcomers, there are a few real jerKS that feel the need to try and intimidate new sailors. My son would never report anything, and im just praying the worst is over.
Rebecca J I'm sorry to hear this. I think for the most part all the nubs go through a little of this and I will not get in to it here. My own daughter has had some experience but has handled it. I also know of a young lady who was bullied consistently but it did come to a crashing end (literally) and the bullied party has been able to advance. Those people are everywhere, it may just seem worse when confined to a small area. I'll keep your son in my prayers and I'm sure things will work out. It's hard for us mom's to let go but I've found that letting my daughter negotiate the waters on her own has been the best course for us.
I agree..I'm not getting involved. I'm just glad he could talk about it with his sisters. I was just really surprised at the extent of the bullying. My son is just an all around nice person.. Im hoping I can post some good news soon. Thank you for the encouragement.
