Chipmunk - I saw a video of the fires in OK - it said that they have grown to 261,781 acres and are only 3 percent contained. Praying that they can start getting this contained ASAP.
B'sMom - yes, the fires are still burning. The wind shifted some so we have not had the smoke in the City like we did last Friday, but it still goes back and forth.
Thanks for sharing the SW flight link. After reading that and checking on other news, I found this one about a love letter re: Bush Sr, and Barbara (may she rest in peace)
T-Track time - A text msg from my son at 10:49AM GC time - said he had just been released from watch, I guess. He had been awake for 30 hours!! and goodnight!! (I had told him that I would not text him, but would email him since I wasn't sure what his sleep schedule was going to be with standing watch. Now I know why he hasn't emailed me as well.
Great article about the SW flight B. I checked out on paying attention to almost all news a couple of years ago and am mostly happy for it, but it's nice to see a positive story like this.
It's impressive to see what capable people with the right training and experience can accomplish especially in those challenging moments in life.
I know they say a picture is worth a 1000 words and in the case of the OKC Bombing / Memorial - it really is. But I also don't want to accidently infringe on any copyrights so I will leave you to do your own search of images of OKC bombing / memorial.
Twenty three years ago today, I was pregnant with our 3rd child and living in WA where my husband was working on his masters. We found out about and then watched the news from what seemed half a world away. But we still felt the effects as barriers went up around the Federal Building in our town next to the PO. When my husband applied for the job here about 1.5 years later, one of the questions he was asked was if April 19th's events effected him in any way from not wanting to move to OKC. It did not, and we have watched or not watched over the years the remembrances.
As with so many things, some things impact us more than others, we were affected by them, but our children may not be, much as we were not all as affected by the wars that our parents or grandparents fought in. But through the generations, we continue to fight for our freedom and we pray for not only those who serve us, but also for the families who have experienced loss. - In Remembrance.
B'sNuke - thanks for sharing the articles. My metallurgical engineer husband sat looking at those pictures, from the article yesterday, in disbelief trying to figure out what happened. And said, "that is a project, I would like to work on. Because I know if we could figure out what had happened on this one and another similar SW one, we could save lives!"
Chipmunk - thank you for the reminder of the OKC bombing. I remember exactly where I was when that happened and it truly was a sad day. I think it's ok to post the link to the memorial site:
Today also marks the culmination of the situation at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, TX. The handling of that situation had much to do with the Oklahoma City bombing. I've been to the memorial at the Brand Davidian compound and it left quite an impression. Both events were horrific and since I'm not trying to start a politically charged discussion I'll leave it there.
On a brighter note I have 4 friends whose birthdays are today!
Happy mom! My (almost) Nuke earned a bonus call last night and I got to talk to him for 30 minutes. A phone call for a boot camp mom is better than winning the lottery! All he has left is BS-21 and then I will officially have a Nuke.
Nancy Jo - Happy Birthday to your daughter. My granddaughter turned 1 today also.
I have poured over the comments and suggestions from the moms on here. Based on that, I'm planning to bring: one set of clothes, a filtered water bottle, his iPad mini, phone and underwear. Anything else ladies? The first list he sent me was VERY long and I nipped that in the bud!
JDubya'sMom - Don't forget his favorite pair of running shoes. He will want them at GC as they start PT and 5K run when they get there.
Also, your profile page is private so I don't know you are on BC Moms group - but this is a good read even if you aren't a member. PIR Day and Liberty during PIR Weekend - There should be a link in it to my discussion about what PIR might look like for those flying out of GL - but if not What PIR weekend may be like for those flying out of GL this should link you to it. Currently it is on the page so you can see it in the discussion but theirs change out so much it can get lost.
Thanks!!! Yes, Chipmunk I'm in those groups and have read everything I can lay my hands on. My son told me in a letter, and again when he called that he has been told he MIGHT be held in Great Lakes for a week for another group to catch up and that he won't know his orders when I get the "I'm a sailor call". I am packing and prepared for each scenario.
Here is my "stupid question" lol. I have read as far as their underwear they can have boxers or briefs. Mine has always worn boxer briefs.... are these ok or do they need the regular boxer shorts? I do not want to bring the wrong thing and risk getting him in trouble!
Hey, SeaSisters. I'm in need of some hugs and support. My sailor just drove away to head to his new command on the west coast. Spent a great week with him and know he is ready for this. Still really tough! He's matured so much since he enlisted 2.5 years ago. Just going through the roller coaster of self talk now...proud, scared, love, uncertainty, happy for him, know he made the right decision and has found his niche, concern for what lies ahead, all of those things...and first, he needs to drive cross country by himself! He's being smart, but you all get it...I'm his mom and don't know when I'll see him again.
Tulip...my heart hurts for you. This navy journey is so hard. I will pray for his safety driving. I'm thinking of you and I totally understand. . We are all here for you.
JayDee659- I would suggest a good pair of running shoes, and extra socks! I got my son a $25 Subway Gift card that I stuck in his bag and he said he used it up the first week in Goose Creek.
Danny'sDad, thanks for the video. I just love all those uniforms.
Tulip, hang in there, Sea Sister. We can worry ourselves crazy, can't we? Try to let go and trust God. The navy prepares these young people for all kinds of things, and really the world is full of really good people if a problem arises. You just had a great visit and that's a gift. I will pray that your sailor's journey is safe and that you find peace. {{N4M hugs}}
Talked to my sailor yesterday, said they all had to attend a Mast. I had no idea what that was but Something about some sailors getting disciplined and some getting separated from Navy. I told him to make sure he is keeping his nose clean! I could just see his eye roll as the reply of “I know, I am mom” came out.
I talked to my sailor and heard the same thing. Apparently everyone at A school in Goose Creek approx. 3000 sailors had to stand at attention for hours while the charges were read and discipline was given. My heart goes out to all the sailors and there families. It was a good lesson for all those watching to follow all the rules carefully. I had a similar talk with my son. He informed me that I had nothing to worry about. :)
Tulip - I understand your apprehension with your son driving by himself. I felt the same way about myself driving to GC for graduation a couple of weeks ago. Stopping often and even taking a few minutes to take in some interesting sites along the way, to break up the monotony, and when you think you aren't able to stay awake, pull over and take a short nap all helped. Prayers for him and for you - Hugs!!
JDubya'sMom - glad you are prepared for either scenario and hope which ever it is works for you. My son did ask for me to send more of his white underwear to him, just so he had more whites for his laundry. But they are in dress whites until around Oct. so definitely needed. - I will leave the joking to you though. (And there aren't any stupid questions asked here, so ask away!)
Wink5 and Mona - they all attended the Captain's Mast - because underage drinking is a big deal. And it is an example especially to the new sailors. They actually have a challenge at NNPTC, I don't recall how many days it is, about 50, if they can go that long without someone disobeying that allegation, they will have a day off - I believe is what my son has told me, and that one of his commander's said that has only happened once or come close in his entire time at NNPTC.
This is a sad situation and I won't share all I know, but I did talk to my son about it, and it is a good reminder for all of our sailors, especially those under drinking age, to set their boundaries. My thoughts and prayers are with those families affected.
This is an old posting but when I was looking up on Google - Captain's Mast, after my son experienced his first public one, shortly after arriving at GC last fall, it was the link I found.

Do you ever wonder how much impact this site has on each others' lives? Last night I had a dream that I was in the Navy and was panicking because I couldn't find an iron to press my dress uniforms. Since my hands are always cold the "iron with your hands" trick wouldn't work. Yep, y'all (and your sailors) are on my mind 24/7 apparently. Haha
PacNWmom - lol that's funny that you had a dream about that. My son said the key is you have to "blow on your hands and rub them together really fast" to warm them up. But I'm with you, I always have cold hands so I don't think it would work for me either. And you know what they say, cold hands, warm heart <3
Buzzbeck - hope you had (or are having) a nice visit with your aunt & uncle & family. Happy 90th Birthday to her! I'll bet she has some stories to tell ;-D
