    B'sNukeMoM. ...have a wonderful vacation!

  • Johanna

Rebecca, have a great time in CT!!!  Our oldest Sailor started out in Groton...we are only 1 hour from there, and then ended up in HI for 2 1/2 years and last week got stationed in Norfolk, and bought a 5 bedroom house in Chesapeak, VA. They have our only Grandchild and we will be heading there at the beginning of June to stay for 3 weeks...;))))))

  • lrdprincess

I am wanting to give my son a G shock watch for graduation.  Is this a good idea?  If so, what style do you recommend?

  • JayDee659

Lrdprincess a Gshock is a great idea! My Nuke loves her G Shock. I'd suggest that whatever model you get to get it in black so that he can wear it with his uniform.

  • Buzzbeck

Lrdprincess: we got our nuke a G shock watch for his birthday in March, he loved it!! I got the idea from past discussion on this nuke page, search for it, you will find the model.

  • DannysDad

I found this one for our son who graduated boot camp a week ago and my parents gave it to him as a gift (after I put all the work into finding it!!!).  I liked this one because it had a number of cool features not on some other G Shock's.  I also liked it for him because he is thin and this was a "slightly" smaller G Shock (don't just go by how they look in the photos, check the face size measurements!).  But all G Shock's are rather chunky.  The price ranges on them vary a lot due to different features which may or may not be of benefit.

If you're willing to spend more I also like the Luminox line.

I do agree with JayDee that getting it in black is a good idea. It keeps it more versatile between everyday use and formal occasions.

    Hello, Every Nukemoms!
Finally next month, I will see my sailor in his A school graduation. I haven't seen him after PIR last December.

I really didn't know the exact meaning of Wear Red in Friday.
I googled this morning and found A story on the meaning of Red Friday, and couldn't stop my flowing tears.

I want to share the story I found on google this morning and also share this touching music with all the soldiers and their families in this Memorial Day.

Good morning all! We made it safely to Sundance. It is raining this morning so I’m sitting here enjoying the peaceful sound of raindrops in the forest - it’s breathtaking. I can here some birds chirping too. This is what I needed! Enjoy your Sunday!

  • Madre

I finally found some time to leave a comment on here. My child is getting ready for deployment in the near future. So we decided to go visit with him before he takes off. I'm not liking the long distance relationship I am having to adjust to. It wasn't so bad when he was in school but now...  This is my first rodeo and we have always been close probably harder for me than for my child.

  • Rebecca J

Madre...I feel your pain. School was much easier. He had more free time. This post school sailor life is very hard on us mothers. This is going to be a long 6 years. I look forward to every leave, but they are few and far between.  I so respect these sailors and the sacrifices they are making to.keep.us safe. This group is really supportive. I saw my sailor this weekend.  As our time was near the end, my heart was so heavy. I pray for him and all of our sailors everyday.

  • Chipmunk

Good morning! I trust everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. We spent ours with our eldest daughter doing a little bit of history learning and also helping them pack for their move to a new town. In the midst of that I was also trying to help my son figure out car insurance for the vehicle we brought back from my daughter to take to my son this summer in GC.

I feel the ache of everyone no matter where you are at in this Navy journey as we are separated from our sailors. But I also felt pain this weekend during our Sunday morning service honor our military, knowing I wasn't able to decorate my father's grave, miles the opposite direction from my daughter.

Welcome to the newest members and nice to see some names I don't recognize as chatting often.  - Just a reminder to the newer ones, your sailor is the best answer for exact dates of graduation, leave and liberty. - So, gently encourage them to find out the specifics for you, and if they can't get it this week, maybe they will know the next.

  • Chipmunk

DOREMI - thank you for sharing the link regarding wearing RED. I shared it with my family the other day.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

DOREMI, I also thank you for the links. This forum is a great place to share.

Madre, hang in there. Deployment is the worst. It's better than it was in the old days but knowing your child is floating in the middle of a vast ocean is hard. These days we have email (on subs it's erratic but still there) and when they are in port they can call or FaceTime. But it's still so hard. It helps to send regular packages. Go online to the USPS and they will send you a bundle of military flat rate boxes for free. You pack those babies full until they can hold no more, no matter how heavy. Tape it up inside and out with duct tape. Boxes get there  usually in 2-3 wks. Subs might be less frequent. We sent my son anything we could think of and he said never worry whether or not your sailor likes something; someone will and it never goes to waste. Knowing your kid will get that package, and how happy it will make him/her, lifts the spirits. Come here when you get down. We are here for you and many of us have been in your shoes already.

I said my "See you laters" on Sunday. My son and his family left for the long trip to Charleston where he will teach at NNPTC. He reports mid-June but they need time to settle into their new home. So hard to see them drive away. My mama's heart is still a little broken but with the Memorial Day ceremonies I'm just so proud of him and grateful he is OK.

B'sNuke, I know you are reading this. I want to sit in a forest listening to the rain and birdsong too! Miss you and hope you enjoy every minute of vacation. You deserve it.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

This was a beautiful hike to Bridal Veil Falls yesterday

  • Nukelukesmom

If you are the Mom of any of these fine young men then pat yourself on the back for raising them right. We so enjoyed having these 4 for the long weekend. I hope they can come again soon!

  • Ceej0347

Ok could use some guidance. My son is requesting his car...ugh! Wasn’t looking forward to this just yet, but he is an adult...(anyway not my question).

I thought I would make it a family road trip and drive his car and fly back, with my other boys.

looking for suggestions for a hotel, would be best with a pool (my others are 9,12 &16).  Any suggestions???

Also I would need my nuke to drive us to the airport - I know he Phased up to phase 3 ( which I’m not really sure what the means, but like every mom I just say great, nice job and then ask all of you...).  So will he be able to drive us to the airport? Or should I look for a hotel  with a shuttle?  Is there such a thing?

was anyone else on here nervous about going to see their kid??(ok question for another day).

    thanks

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Ceej0347, I don't think his driving you all to the airport will be an issue. I can't help you with hotels. I stayed at the Villas which had no pool.

Don't be nervous to see your sailor. Is the nervousness due to the drive, or flying, or wondering what you'll do? I think he will so glad to see everyone that nothing else will matter. You should have no problem finding a good hotel. And remember, there are great beaches in Charleston.

  • JayDee659

Ceej we always stayed near North Ashley Phosphate. There's a Residence Inn and a Springhill Suites and I'm pretty sure one if not both have pools.

Make sure you coordinate your flight time with your sailor so that taking you to the airport does not conflict with any class or watch time.

  • WearsLargeHats

Ceej, a lot depends on your budget and timeframe. When my son was there, we rented a house near the beach on Isle of Palms and had a great time. IIRC, it is about 1/2 hour from NNPTC. There is an excellent public beach park on Isle of Palms, too, with lifeguards.

Charleston proper is a distance away and expensive. Look at North Charleston, around Ashley Phosphate for best access.

With the youngsters, Patriot's Point is a must (there is a hotel near there too, and water taxi to downtown). The Aquarium is good too.

As far as getting to the airport, worst case drive his car and park it there, whereupon getting to the airport becomes HIS problem!

  • The Hammer

I'm heading from southern Wisconsin to GC on Friday to drive my son's car to him. Booked a room at the Wingate by Wyndham in Charleston. Reviews were good and it has a pool. I will post my findings!!!

  • Tulip

Have some questions for those who have previously experienced (or currently are experiencing) underways and deployments. What is the role of the ombudsman? How many contacts can the sailor provide to the ombudsman? Can they change who that is? If so, how does that work? If our name is not with the ombudsman does that mean that the Navy cannot contact us or give us any information if we contact someone from the Red Cross, etc. about emergencies? Just a little surprised by how our situation is playing out and our sailor starts his first underway soon and deployment in a few months. Thanks.

  • JayDee659

Tulip, I cannot tell you if there is a limit or not.  I do know that my daughter has added me and her husband.  She also submitted the paperwork to have me added to the Family Readiness Group so I am on that FB page and our ombudsman is a member of that group.

The ombudsman is a volunteer who is the information link between the ship and the families.  I can say that our ships ombudsman always seems to be very helpful.  What ship is your son on?

  • Tulip

Thanks, JayDee! I sent you a Friend Request and will PM you later; heading to work now.

  • Tracie

If anybody got video of A school graduation this morning I would really appreciate a share. My FiL had major health issue so was not able to attend at the last minute and my son received personal excellence award and he didn’t feel like asking ppl to take pictures for me. Grrrrrr

  • MoMom

Tracie, be sure to check out the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command FB page, if you haven’t already. I’m not sure how long it takes to get pictures up, but you might find photos there soon.

  • Tracie

    MoMom, thanks will do!

  • Green2Blue

Haven't been on here in  awhile, but was just reading through comments.  My sailor graduated A school with NNLori's sailor last weekend.  It was a wonderful visit to GC!  We stayed on Isle of Palms if anyone wants insight on that.

What I did notice, is that there are quite a few who stated PS will start in July for their sailors.   If your son is starting PS on July 7, chime in so we can get to know one another and commiserate!

  • Mammagoose

Green2Blue, mine starts then too.  It should be an interesting ride for sure!

  • Chipmunk

Good afternoon everyone - Busy days at our house. For those with sailors in T-Track I had updated the Sailors perspective of A school with information on T-Track. Mine started PS on May 10 and mostly they are studying lots, doing lots of homework and studying on the weekends.

I will say though, encourage your sailors to keep up with their PT and running routine. My son said he has a PFA this coming Tuesday already, that he was going this AM to run with some friends. He thought it was way early from them just classing up. But if I understood correctly, depending on how well they pass, then they are not required to do as much PT time during PS which allows more time for studying. So, if you can encourage with anything, while they are doing their 24/48's I would suggest they keep up their PT on their own.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, congratulations to all of our sailors!!

  • SubMom

Ceej0347 we stayed at Holiday Inn Ashley Phosphate and it was wonderful. They have a pool and is in the middle of everything- mall, movie theater, restaurants and it’s only 15 minutes from base. We went to Patriots Point, Fort Sumter and Angel Oak Tree. We ran out of time to visit the aquarium- it’s right next to the fort Sumter visitor information center. Oh yeah the hotel has a dedicated driver that will drive you to the airport- they made the arrangements for us and was very reasonable. I hope you have a wonderful time!

  • SubMom

I hope everyone had a wonderfully memorable Memorial weekend. We had a fantastic visit with our son! I think one of my favorite memories was listening to my husband and son talk “electrical” stuff. My other favorite memory was listening to our son and his sister as they face timed.

  • Ceej0347

Submom- thanks so much!!!!  appreciate everyone’s input.

this group has some pretty amazing parents and significant others. I would be lost without all of you!!

as far as why I’m worried/nervous - just want the best for him! (As we all do). Don’t want to be in his way, or put pressure on him. He struggled on one test but then came back full steam ahead. So I know he’s fine!! Just being overly momma or ‘nuking it’ as he tells me. lol - guess I know why he’s a nuke after all!

  • The Hammer

We are in GC now!!! Went to Folly Beach yesterday and had a blast! It was like Spring Break! There seems to be a lot to do... heading into old downtown Charleston today. So nice to be with my kid!!!
  • JayDee659

Have fun in Charleston Hammer. Maybe if you're lucky your Nuke will take you on to base to look for Charlie!

  • Buzzbeck

Hammer: I found visiting our nuke while he was in the pipeline in GC was just about the best thing ever. Pure joy just hanging out with him. He had changed so much.

Ceej: Our nuke also had his ups and downs in test scores, but we just kept encouraging him to do the best he could, and he persevered. I think the sailors welcome the break in the grind, when families visit.

All nukes need to work on eating as best as they can, and exercising to keep the mind sharp: vegetables, seafood, etc. Charleston is the shrimp capitol of the south it seems. They sell it on the street corners in Mt. Pleasant. Fresh fruit and vegetable season is coming and stands are on Mt. Pleasant main roads. You can pick up fresh things on your way through Mt. Pleasant on your way to hanging out at Isle of Palms beach. And you must visit the shrimp shack on your way to Edisto Beach. Fresh crab and shrimp, good for the brain.

  • proudofourson

Anyone have any ideas on an appropriate gift for Prototype graduation in Sept? Or is it appropriate to give a gift?

  • CSW

Heading out to see our sailor at BS. Meeting at Niagra Falls and then will scope out the site.  Almost done this is his last long weekend before the end!

    :)

  • SubMom

The Hammer - I hope you have a fantastic visit!!

  • SubMom

    CSW - enjoy every minute!!

Hi all - Happy Monday - I'm back!  Trying to get caught up here at work - ugh - vacation was wonderful but I've got so much to do now at work lol!  I've been trying to keep up on the comments here - I'll try to post more later.  Looks like a lot has been going on which is good ;-D

DOREMI - I added the link on the meaning of RED Shirt Friday up above - thanks for posting that!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Welcome to our newest members ~ VK1776, Elisamaria, proudofourson, Andrea and Lizbeth!

Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info up above and of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have!

  • Chipmunk

Welcome to all of the new members. Be sure to share where you are at in your Navy journey. My son is in PS (Power School) at GC (Goose Creek, SC) as an ETN3 and for him, it is all study. He helped me put together Nuke A school daily schedule - in the discussion above.

    Welcome back B'sNukeMom!!

Congratulations to all of those with graduations or upcoming ones. And it is has been fun to read about the trips and visits with your sailors.

I have a request that is sort of off topic. But if anyone has any experience with creating their own database using Access in Office 365 or has skilled along those lines would you post a comment on my page. I am trying to teach myself Access and I am stuck on a specific question. Thanks!!

Everyone have a wonderful week!! My youngest is in sailor's time zone, and approximate longitude, an empty house for a week and lots of going through stuff this summer! So, I am reading your news but not posting much.

  • Chipmunk

Thanks for the  comment - I sent a friend request.

  • KayCee

Green2Blue and Mammagoose - my son is also starting PS the beginning of July right after the holiday.  He is class 1807-T

Wishing Everyone a wonderful week ahead!!

  • Mammagoose

I know my son is looking forward to moving into the next step.  It should be quite the adventure.  I look forward to taking it with you ladies!

  • Green2Blue

    HI KayCee and Mammagoose!

My sailor just went back to GC today!  We had a great visit.  A few tears today, but I know he needs to be there.  He was 1809-T.

That brings up a good question...does their address need to be updated with the new class number and section, although I am not sure if they know that yet.

Nice to share the journey with you!

  • Byron'sNukeMom

    Hello Fellow Nuke Moms,

My son is at GC in A School in class 1829-A.  It has been wonderful and so informative reading all your posts and then being able to have a real conversation with my son about what he is experiencing.  He has been really good about calling every Friday/Saturday which has surprised the dickens out of me (in a good way).  The care package ideas I have put to good use, and he has appreciated them greatly, especially on the weekends.  His first roommate got married and moved out so for now he has his own room.  He immediately took the bottom bunk too.  But every Saturday he expects to get a new roommate, but he has been two weeks without one.  I told him not to get too used to that.

It has been amazing seeing how much he has grown, and yet how little he has changed.  He has made friends with a couple of guys in his class.  If anyone here has sons in the 1829-A class, would you send me a PM please?  I'd like to get to know the moms of his friends.  I know it is a bit of a shot-in-the-dark, but I know we cannot use last names here, and that is all he ever calls his friends as they never use each others' last names.  I am not sure even he knows, which I find hilarious.

When he graduates, we are going up the week before for a bit of vacation then driving back with him (about 10 hours from home).  We actually have family in Charleston so he can connect with them almost every weekend since he has phased up, which has made this transition so much easier for all of us.

I have appreciated greatly all the insights into Charleston and the surrounding area.  Thanks again for all the support and information.  There is comfort in knowing you are not alone.  Please connect with me if your son is 1829-A.

  • JayDee659

Byron'sNukeMom, the Navy will change your child and I'm so glad that you're happy with the changes!  It's nice when they realize how much we mean to them, isn't it?

You may want to know the mom's of the girls in his class too (unless your sailor is married).  My daughter left home with a serious boyfriend.  Then I kept hearing about this sailor (last name only) as in sailor and I are going to the mall or I met sailors mom and hung out with them.  That sailor is now my son-in-law.  Keep your ears tuned in to names that are repeated frequently. :)

  • 3B'smom

Green2Blue - Yes, he will have a new address. I know "T track" is part of it, but I don't remember if you keep the class number. Best to check with him. He will have yet another address once he classes up for PS.

  • Chipmunk

RE: Addresses after A school Graduation

They will change their rate which your sailor can give you.

Then if they are in T-Track, just substitute that for their A school class number.

Once they go to Power School, they will all have the same Class#-Section Number so my son is currently Class# 1804 - 02 and his rank changed from SN to ETN3.

If you don't have their new PS class immediately when they class up, my son said you can still use T-Track, until you find out their new number.

Byron'sNukeMom - glad you are finding helpful information and feeling welcome here.

JayDee659 - I agree, my son mentions the females in his class more than the males, mostly because there are fewer, but I find it interesting.
