So excited for my friends Ceej0347 and others that I know are headed to GC this week for A school or PS graduations!! Prayers for all and any others traveling that way as well.
Welcome to all the new members. Be sure to introduce yourselves and where you are at with your loved one on this Navy journey. As B's Mom and NancyJo said check out the info above and to the right. For those with sailors just arriving at GC, my son helped me write this discussion last year and there is additional information posted as he has progressed through the pipeline. Nuke A school daily schedule - sailor's perspective
Bamamom1970 send me a friend request if you like and I will try to answer any ET questions you might have.
NNLori you and KayCee will have to swap Power Prep tales if you gather any when your sons are through. My son didn't have to do Power Prep, but he said those that did and still struggled with their tests had to start PS with a higher minimum of required study hours, even if their A school GPA would have been high enough for them to have lower study hours. Also, there are no regrades with Power Prep tests, so encourage them to study. If they are doing Prep for math then it is probably well worth it. They sort of "power" through the math, at least for the ET's in PS, from what my son has shared regarding his math tests.
In our phone conversation this afternoon, he also said "encourage them to keep up their PT skills on their own, and push for the higher averages, so that they can be on voluntary PT during PS. Being on voluntary PT helps immensely with having more study time for your class. Also, tell them to take advantage of going to NDI and doing the study quizzes." They helped him very much to prepare for his test today (non math).
Super excited to be heading to GC now to see my sailor graduate power school! We’re staying in Franklin TN with my sister in law, then off to South Carolina in the morning. Can’t wait to see my boy!
KayCee- Yes, my sailor will start Power School the first week in July. He should be through Power School by Christmas. Can anyone explain how the squadrons are created? How are sailors grouped?
ProudParent - If you're asking how the sections in Power School are created I can tell you that each section is by rate - example in my son's PS class there were 10 sections - 4 sections of ETs, 2 sections of EMs and 4 sections of MMs. If there is any methodology for dividing the sailors of a given rate into a section I don't know. Some of the sailors that had been in my sons A school class were in his same section and others were not.
ProudOfK thank you that does answer my question. I still don't have the correct vocabulary....squadron/sections. I am interested in how the sailors are grouped by sections if their rate is the same. I would assume they would group them by academic ability. If anyone knows please share.
ProudParent, this may be a mystery only solved by someone who's on staff there. Nancy Jo, might your son have an idea?
In my experience there's a broad mix in all classes. Keep in mind that all these kids are freaky smart, that's something that is a prerequisite to get in to the Nuke program. Like everyone else, some will perform better in one area, some in another. For example, my daughter had a little problem getting her head around some specific mechanical "thing" (get used to them not telling you specifics due to security). In any case, another sailor gave her a hand and taught her. That sailor struggled with the math so my daughter gave him a hand as she's a math whiz. Side note, they then got married and their 2nd anniversary is next Wednesday.
In the same way that Vivaldi was a musical genius but probably couldn't invent a light bulb.
KayCee- Yes, I believe that he does. He is a MM. He has a friend that is also a MM but is in a different section which is why I ask about how they are divided into sections. My sailor is very mechanical minded. He was a video game nerd but also spent hours working on cars. Changing out motors and figuring out wiring. Hopefully he will have a friend who helps him in the areas that he struggles and he can return the favor.
JayDee659 and ProudofK- Thank you for sharing your knowledge and stories. It's helpful as a new Navy mom.
I texted my son this morning, ProudParent, about how they group sections of the same rate. He's working so I don't know when he'll get back to me. Stay tuned!
He will start new quals next week. Even though he has been out in the fleet, every reactor you work on has it's own quals. That will take a few months, maybe 4 he said? Once he has passed all his quals he will be able to act as staff, and can also pursue classes outside on NNPTC.
On a side note, we were talking 4th of July and he says since they live in base housing no fireworks whatsoever. Makes sense but it disappoints him. Like so many others, he loves the big bangs and the bright flashes. The bigger the better. They will find their July 4th fun somewhere else.
So exciting to hear of all my Sea Sisters heading to see their sailors. So much excitement! Make sure you let us know how it all goes.
The quals never end right NancyJo! For those of you that are new to the pipeline this just goes to show you that the learning and qualifications are a part of the nuke life always!
Heading to Vegas in the morning - can't wait! Get to see B and his gf too ;-D
B'sNukeMom, be careful. I won't be getting out there this year. The friend that I stayed with will be on the east coast with her daughter when she has her first baby! Maybe next year we can all get together and not cause an all out riot and panic in the streets...
Have a great time in Vegas! Give B and his GF our regards and remember, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas unless it's really juicy and then your Sea Sisters need details. ;^D
NancyJo, I'm a good organizer but I just ran out of vacation time. :( Just got word that I'm receiving a divisional award for ski patrol so I'll be heading to the Wisconsin Dells later this year for the meeting and ceremony. If everyone wants to wait until 2019 I'll be happy to spearhead it.
One year ago today Thurs (but it was the 29th) we were saying good bye to our SR. Then going and helping our newlywed daughter and her sister finish cleaning there apartment here in OKC. It honestly doesn't seem like a year, so much happens and so many things / projects for me to still accomplish. I am just happy that I can chatter on the phone with him still, like I did yesterday. The day is coming when silence will not seem golden as it has in a house full of kids. I appreciate all of you veteran moms that keep encouraging us.
We remember those days, don't we Chipmunk? I took my son to MEPS May 12, 2010. I'll never forget it. He was my last little duckling (I only had 4 kids) and it was very hard. I was a single mom so the emptiness seemed very loud. Of course it gets easier with time. Now that he's off the boat we are getting back to how we talked before he ever left except now he has a wife and 3 kids of his own. This navy journey has been life-changing for both of us. I'll say for the benefit of our new moms that the changes you will see if your kiddo are profound. They learn discipline and responsibility and what character means. You will be amazed.
My son answered me. He said "There are multiple sections with some amount of each rate in each section. Rate matters because they need x amount of each per section. So it's about keeping it relatively even."
Some of you that have been around for awhile are aware of the bad luck B has when he flies - well it happened again. He and his GF have been in Atlantic City this week and were flying out today to Vegas. The flight was to go to Atlanta and then on to Vegas. No such luck - delayed and then cancelled into Atlanta due to severe thunderstorms. No flights tomorrow so maybe they could get them there on Saturday. We arrive tomorrow - and they are going to a wedding on Sunday. So the only other option was to rent a car and drive to Philly and catch a flight tonight to Vegas. Thankfully it's a direct flight so there shouldn't be any issues. And they were able to get a military discount on the car so they only had to pay an extra $100. I tell you, that boy has the worst luck when it comes to flying lol! I was going to be sad if we were in Vegas and they weren't there!

Exciting to hear more ET's are arriving @Bamamom1970. My son's been hanging out waiting for more guys/gals. They should be starting the program together. So, considering your 'Bama" name, are you in Alabama? If so, we're neighbors.
So happy for those of you that are already probably watching your sailors ceremonies at GC.
For those of you possibly at PIR - Soak it all in!
Off to Camp Fire Day Camp with my youngest this morning for their parent open house. This is a change from all the years my children have participated. Not being at Council Fire is going to seem so strange. He is a CA (counselor aide) this year again.
With all of his camps and then trying to get a car to my son in GC, my June and July are gone. So much for some sort of get together!!
Buzzbeck! I am so happy for you! What a series! If the Beavers come back to Omaha next year, you come to. I would love to meet you and show you around. Navy moms always have fun. Anyway, congratulations!

Good morning! Have my red on. My parents are arriving with my DEPper who leaves Tuesday. Party tomorrow, quiet on Sunday and then of course MEPS and drop off on Monday. My second time through and darn if it isn’t just as hard.
