Had a call from Boy #2 this weekend. He failed PFA both times, so he is being separated from the Navy. Crazy thing is that he is VERY fit. The whole family has been scratching their heads over this. Doesn’t sound like he plans to apply for a waiver to go back. I suppose he will have ample time to do some soul searching about his future while he waits in seps. Said he will be back home in 2-3 weeks.
My kid has A school graduation on October 5th... which now could be pushed back if they have to evacuate. It has made me a little reflective of the last year and how much our lives have changed. I can honestly say that I was NOT prepared to have him leave for boot camp last January. We spent the entire day together and I drove him to the recruiter to drop him off. I don't think I've ever cried that hard as when I had to say goodbye. Then came boot camp and the many weeks of driving by RTC (I work very close by) and waving to him every day. He knew that I wasn't going to take it well and pre-arranged to have flowers sent to me every 2 weeks... which made me cry more (there's a theme here!). Then PIR (cried)... spending the day together at the airport (tears)... and driving his car out to him and visiting GC (bring on the waterworks!) I'm slowly toughening up... and now a hurricane. Lord help me when he is finally deployed!
Hats off to you veteran moms! You are an inspiration to me! I don't post often... but I read the emails every day and have learned so much from you all. Thank you for sharing your stories!
The Hammer. ..your post was very heartfelt. This navy life as a mom is so very difficult. I miss my son so much. He is going out on his first deployment very soon and I am trying to prepare myself. He is on a sub so.contact will be rare if at all. I'm trying to figure out how I'll last for 6 months. Thanks for posting and being honest. Thank goodness we all have each other.
3B's Mom - I am sadden as well to hear of your son's PFA failure.
The Hammer - good to hear from you!! My son went through the hurricane evac last year. He was INDOC and they honestly did more preparation for evacuation it seemed than they were actually gone. He knew they might not have cell service so he made sure he had lots of pages of tabs open on his computer, so he could still read things. As it turned out, they end up calling everyone back to GC sooner than anticipated. This year, my son is in the final weeks of PS and when I spoke to him today, he his a lot more concerned about an evac, because it will mess things up for getting their school done. His comment was they no longer change PS graduation and so if there is a hurricane evac, they will have to make up the time on the weekend for classes and cram in their information in the time left. So, he is hopeful they don't evacuate.
Kbpoohbear, when Matthew tore through they went somewhere near Columbia. Those who had family out of the hurricane zone and filed the papers could go home. My daughter and SIL came home. Some of their friends spent a few days in Nashville. They had to have their own transportation and provide an address where they would be staying.
My son was also able to come home during Matthew. He was home for 1 week. He did have a hard time getting back because 95 had so many detours, but it was well.worth it.. Anyone who.can't go.home is evacuated to a safe place.
SuzeMN my daughter never did the homework in high school either. Oncr she started A school she changed her approach. They do have mandatory study hours in A school. They don't need to be #1 they just need to pass. Once they hit the fleet they have to qualify all over again
Yes, it sounds like they are battening down the hatches - both in GC and in VA. The Navy definitely has a plan in place so try not to worry (too much!). Easier said then done, I know! In VA all the ships are preparing to sortie for the storm (they basically try to get them out to sea before the storm hits). The main thing is that they follow their commands orders.
momterp - I'm with you - I can do our earthquakes here in CA but these storms are another thing - never been through one and hopefully never will. We're going to a wedding in FL the first weekend in October and I hope this stuff isn't still happening then!

SuzeMN - definitely feel free to ask questions. The Navy has recently changed the PFA guidelines. I'll post the link in a minute for you. As you can see most of our nukes got by in high school without doing a lot of work lol! Your son will be fine. The difference is in nuke school there's a lot of information coming at them real fast.....they teach them how to study (lots of memorizing) and they spend a lot of time in class and in study time. They'll get mandatory study hours (most do but there are a few that don't!). Mine always had mandatory hours.
SuzeMN, don't worry about your son. (Easy for me to say, right?) The Navy is tough on them but boy does it transform. My son also was the smart kid who never cracked a book and got A's and B's. He would rather play video games. The Navy got to work on him and now he's responsible and directed. That's a common story.
3B'smom, I'm sorry to hear about your son but we've seen others come in and not complete. They go on to other great things. Your guy has brains which got him in. He'll go on and be a rock star doing something else. I know it's disappointing though. Hang in there and let us know how he does on his next adventure.
My son and I talked for a long time Sunday about possible evacuation. He's Mr. Sunshine and Unicorns so of course they won't evacuate. Right. We shall just see about that. His wife has suitcases packed.
ccording to my FB memories it was almost a year ago exactly that my nuke grandson was evacuated from GC for a hurricane Irma. The guys called it “a hurrication” they were gone only about 2 days. He will report to Norfolk in Oct for his sub assignment The yet to be commissioned USS New Jersey
SuzeMN, As you can see, your son's story is a common one among nukes. My son's story was exactly the same as many have written here. He barely managed to graduate HS, not because he didn't know the material, but because a fairly high percentage of his grades were based on homework, which he never did. In the Nuke pipeline, that isn't an option. I'll never forget the day he called me from boot camp and told me in a tone of awe "Mom, the homework here is MANDATORY!" It took all I had in me not to bust up laughing and say "Buddy, it's been mandatory since kindergarten." He very quickly pulled his act together and consistently got awards for academic excellence. Now he's in the STA-21 program and acing all his classes in college.
You'll be amazed at the difference you'll see in him in a short time. Hang in there, enjoy every moment you have with him, and hang out with us here. We get it.
On a different note, my family's vacation house in NC is directly in the path of Florence. Here's hoping there isn't too much damage! Luckily it's not right on the coast, but still.
B3’s Mom - very sorry to hear about your son but he will definitely go places. These kids have amazing smarts!
Chipmunk - hoping IF they evacuate it doesn’t derail and stress your son’s class too much.
PacNWmom - hoping there will be minimal damage to your family’s vacation home.
our son is looking forward to the “hurrication” but at the same time wants to “ experience “ the hurricane. Being a hurricane veteran I told him it’s not what it’s cracked up to be:)
praying for safety for everyone that is in the path of Hurricane Florence
General rule for hurricanes: hide from wind and run from water. I imagine the concern at GC would be the latter: it is low ground, and roads could become impassible. Lose power and/or water, and conditions could get miserable, so they evacuate non-essential personnel inland ahead of the storm. Don't worry though: Sailors are tough! Here's an interesting story from Hurricane Hugo. A U.S. Navy Nuclear Submarine Once Submerged In A River To Ride Out...
Talked to my son - he said if they have family/friends within 500 miles not in the path of the storm they MAY be allowed to drive their own vehicle there (with permission).....looking at latest storm track, still looks like Charleston will be just outside the worst of it. FYI, spaghettimodels.com is a great weather resource....my pilot brother-in-law recommended it highly, said the guy pulls data from multiple sources and gives the most accurate info he’s seen.
My son told me since he is still qualifying since he moved in May he is not technically assigned to a boat. He and his family will evacuate to FL and visit with his FIL for a few days. Prayers for the safety of all those good souls in the path of the storm. I think they will leave tomorrow after he gets off work.
B'sNukeMom - Thank you for the reminder. I have been so caught up in the details of many things, and with various ones of my children that it had not even dawned on me what today's date was. I had just dropped my sailor and daughter off at their respective preschool classes and was leaving when a friend meet me in the parking lot and asked me if I had heard the news. I had to go home and turn on the TV for it to sink in and then sat and wondered all day what my two girls in school were hearing.
With remembrance, as I set to work sorting through more items and praying for our sailors as well.
Ladies, I sent a PM to some of you. If you are not on my friend list and wish to be, please send a request. I will be working and not checking email till later, but I will do my best to respond.
Keep in mind that there are many factors involved with evacuations and the Navy has to submit to the Governor's declaration, even if that doesn't seem like it is in the best interest of all involved. The Navy will do their best, within their means to keep all of our sailors safe and secure.
Also, don't panic if you don't have messages from your sailors immediately. I say this to myself as well. Living through tornadoes, we are generally asked to stay off cell phones and also there most likely is not going to be Wi-Fi reception. So, text, patience, and prayers.
Talked with my son last night and he said they have regular classes today and will be evacuating this evening. My son said he is driving his car to a hotel in Charlotte. This surprised me. I urged him to fill his gas tank and bring extra water with him when he departs.. I am much more concerned about him departing on his own than I would be if he was going to Fort Jackson with the rest of the Nukes. Praying for everyone in South Carolina.
Ladies, I'm near Louisville, KY and can take a Nuke or two if they need a place to go.
Chipmunk is correct, do not panic about not hearing from them, you are supposed to be off your cell so the "lines" are clear for emergency calling. Also the evac routes will be packed and it will take them much longer to get where they're going. In 2016 it took my daughter 8 hours to get to Columbia, but they got there and all was well.
My Nuke is now in Norfolk and I assume she's gone out with her ship but did not get a confirmation from her before the fleet pulled out. Her husbands sub has not passed sea trials so I'm not sure if he's heading out or not. They have a cat and bunny at home so I'm hoping for the best, if both kids are out they'll have left the critters with necessities. Fortunately she's on the end of Flood Zone D and almost not in it at all so maybe the water won't reach her house.
I've been in tropical storms, and my husband weathered Wilma in his office in Florida. The Navy will take good care of our kids, so try not to worry (right).
Mona -- I-26 can be a real bottleneck, but once he gets to Columbia, Charlotte is no problem. But it is likely to rain in Charlotte this weekend. A lot. My eldest, who lives near Raleigh, was going to take his family to the beach this weekend. Yeah, that's not going to happen!
My Sailor texted saying there was 0% chance he could come home to ride out the storm. They are being bussed inland to local base. We are from central Florida so he has watched and helped with the prehurricane prep from Charlie, Francis and Jean in 2004 to Irma last year. I so want to still be in charge of him! So, I'm praying for all our sailors and all us mommas (and daddies) that have to trust in God and the Navy to keep them safe and sound. Hooyah Navy!
My sailor told us this story when we were visiting in June. Was a topic of discussion in power school I guess. My sailor moved to Ballston Spa 2 weeks also so this seems like a good place now. Prayers to all evacuating and in the storms path. get prepared and stay safe.
I've heard of this little trick but now is a good time to remind everyone of it with the hurricane looming (it would also be a good idea just to keep the quarter frozen in your freezer all the time in case power goes out for any reason!):
Been keeping in touch with my son on the evacuation plans in place. Hurricanes are not new to us, we even went through Harvey last year and my son helped to do water rescues in our devastated neighborhood. However, having my son go through one and not have me there to watch over him and KNOW whether he is safe or not is new to me, and I do not like this type of new. Prayers to ALL our sailors, and to all those in the path of this storm. And a special prayer to all you fellow moms who walk along this journey with me.
I'm not concerned at all, but all the worrying here is weighing on me! I'm sure my sailors biggest concern is running out of battery on his phone/laptop and not having games to play. I'd be way more concerned if he was in college in Charleston. Being in the Navy I'm quite sure they have this well in hand. I'm sure they are executing well thought out plans. We've had bases and hurricanes there for a long long time.
Just talked to our son and he told us he just finished watch. He said he was honored tonight to participate in evening colors being that it is 9-11. I have to agree with him - an honor and privilege
SubMom - Yes a privilege and an honor for your son!!
JayDee - thanks for your comment earlier today. I passed along the travel time to my son, to help prepare him.
DannysDad - I did literally LOL when I read your comment!! We are so glad that you are one of a handful of men who hang out with us women and moms, helping us to keep all things in perspective.
It sort of reminds me of those who laughed at my son (who is on a 2nd floor room) when he asked if he should take stuff or if it was safe to leave. They commented, " N... if we get 12 foot high water to ruin your BEQ then there won't be any NNPTC left either!" Yep, sometimes we just have to keep things in perspective.
That said, my son was asking for prayers, not so much for his travel as for their destination. I said goodnight to him an hour ago, I wish you all a Good night's rest as well.
DannysDad - Hopefully, your son remembers his power cords! Again thanks for helping us Momma Bears keep a proper perspective.
Storm update - my husband just looked at whatever site he is tracking Florence and said it may actually move back and hit GC, but that may not be until Sunday. So, evacuating our sailors sounds like a wise decision. Continued prayers for all involved and the storm to subside before it hits land.
Freebird, my son is in Power School and the last he told me the other day was that they now are no longer changing PS graduation for anything. If they are gone they are going to have to make up time on Saturday and even holidays they would have gotten. I don't know if they will actually have a graduation or not. Just waiting to see.
"A" School graduation may be different though, since most of them go for at least a week or more on T-Track before classing up to Power School. My son's A school graduation was pushed back a week this spring due to the snow storm they had.
This is the news I have currently and as always it can change on a dime in the Navy.

Yes, it sounds like they are battening down the hatches - both in GC and in VA. The Navy definitely has a plan in place so try not to worry (too much!). Easier said then done, I know!

I saw the article from WearsLargehHats thanks!

Very interesting article WLH! Good thing for their quick thinking.
Everyone please be safe out there.....I'm praying that everyone's sailor is safe and is able to evacuate - try not to worry (too much).

So, has anyone heard about upcoming graduations? My Nuke has no info on any delay.
