Welcome to our newest member ~ TitoMomMMN! Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info up above and also take a look at the Pages (14) to the right. I see that your son is enlisted - is he already through the nuke pipeline?
Thank you for the welcome B'sNukeMomMMN. I found this group while lookin for information on the hurricane. My son is currently in A school, about a month in. I hope I did the designation properly. I'm new to all this and really appreciate the words of wisdom.
Hey everyone! I found the group the same way TitoMom did. My son (lovingly known as "butthead" on occasion lol) is in power school. I want to say thanks for the comments on the hurricane and evacs etc. My child isn't always the easiest to get in touch with.
Currently, I am having to abide by my own words of wisdom as I am awaiting news from my son, because after one phone call and text this morning - realizing his buddy wouldn't necessarily be able to answer his smart phone - I promised not to call again. And people wonder why I like my flip phone, I can pass it off to whoever is in the car with me to answer or read text msgs.
Amarrah which PS class - section is your son in? Mine is 1804-02. (You may post a comment on My Page if you wish. It won't show up unless I approve it.)
Chipmunk- he's in 1805-9. Honestly, I'm still trying to figure out all the military/Navy speak, so I'm not sure what the different sections are or mean. I'm familiar with some, but Butthead (so I don't accidentally call him by name :P ) doesn't always give me specifics since he knows this. I'm gonna try to surprise him by (attempting) to learn it now that I've found the translator here.
My son called this morning to let us know that he was allowed to drive his car to Ft. Jackson. I feel so much better knowing that they will be on higher ground. He is not so happy as he would like to experience his first hurricane... and not have to bunk with 80 of his mates!
My son contacted me in the last hour to say they had arrived, but that there were bunches of lines. He had topped off his gasoline tank, upon his father's recommendation.
The Hammer - Yes, lots of close quarters is not my son's idea of a vacation even if it is a hurrication!
Amarrah - So the class number is usually a designation of the year, I believe and the fiscal year starts Oct 1st. I believe. I am assuming the first Power School class to start after Oct 2017 would likely have been in Nov, because if my son is 1804 and started in mid-May, that would work out right with PS starting every 2 months.
My son is 1804-02 so he is class 1804 Section 02, your son is class 1805 section 09. What rate is your son? Mine is an ET. I know there are friends of mine on here that have sailors in 1805, so hopefully you can connect with some of them. The different sections are the different ratings, MM, EM, ET. They are all in the same class together and if I have gathered correctly, some subjects and tests they all take together in PS and others are still rate specific.
Hoping everyone gets their “I made it safe and sound call”. I know once our sailor checks in he’s immediately on sandbag duty. I’m sure this will be all hands on deck.
The Hammer - our son is the same way. This would be his first hurricane and he wanted to stay and experience it.
Mine made it fine as well. Basically said he had to muster in the morning, and be checked in by midnight. He said he essentially had free time in the mean time. Anyone know of things to do in the Columbia area to prevent massive boredom?
Amarrah - You may send friend requests to anyone that you would like on N4M, but maybe there will be some other MM moms from PS class 1805 who will reach out to you.
SubMom - that is more info than I had from my son. Last year, I think he mostly sat and read on his computer. If they are filling sandbags, that will at least give them all something to do.
Glad to hear all of the "safe and sound calls coming in"
Mammagoose & Amarrah - Double check on graduation dates. 13th is a Thur & 15th is a Sat, and usually graduations are on Friday to my knowledge.
As for traveling anywhere while on Evac, I am not sure. As I recall last year my son had to stay at evac site, but he was also technically INDOC and so had not phased up at all.
I got the "I'm here" call - son drove himself and a couple of classmates, just got a text that they are still in line....it's like BC all over again ;)
I got a text from my son that he arrived. He told me not to worry he's, "as safe as can be". Then I got an overdraft notice on his account and had to "MOM" him.... LOL!
pandalvr So right! Talked to my son. He says the conditions are deplorable. Broken windows, open windows that cannot be closed, inoperable electrical outlets, no sink and no running water. He says some were put in newer rooms. Others have been placed in abandoned/poorly maintained buildings. He wishes they would allow him to leave. Says he would gladly pay for a hotel room out of his own pocket.
I don't recall there being these sorts of conditions when my son was there last year. But I still know he was glad to have had an original different place to stay and had even had a motel booked for in route - thankfully, he was able to cancel it yesterday without penalties when they changed the orders for his PS class.
Last year my son was very concerned about going to Ft. Jackson because other sailors had told him that they ran out of food. I forgot to remind him to take snacks with him. And as I told him last year, this is just good training for being out in the fleet, but those pictures are not pleasant for sure. Sounds like our sailors need to have a couple of work days fixing things up there!
My son wants to pay for a hotel too. No matter what, those conditions are deplorable and no one should be subjected to it. Especially no water. He also stated on a few workingights and bearly has a/c. The storms hasnt even begun, what about the rain and wind they wont have protection for themself or belongings. Could this just be for tonight??
Hi, I spoke with my son earlier and he said it was ok. It just took a while to get settled. They had MRE's for dinner, chicken alfredo, he liked it. He's on the 3rd floor in a concrete building, with about 30/40 other sailors, a mix of MM's and ET's. They sounded like they were having a good time.
My son also said things were fine where he was. He enjoyed the MREs as well, and actually said that the beds, bathrooms and showers were better there. He said the Army guys were really kind and helpful. Like Chipmunk said, maybe they can work together to help make it better in the areas that are in worse condition. I hope so; I'm sorry for the worry for the conditions of the buildings your Nukes are in. He did say he was thankful to be there and not in GC when the storm hits.
I'm happy to hear that everyone seems to have been evacuated safely and I'm sorry to hear that the accommodations are lacking :( But I'm sure it was difficult for them to find rooms for everyone - Thank goodness it's only temporary. And it's preparing them for deployment!
I have been reading the comments about the sailors evac to old quarters and the conditions not being nice. PLEASE stop complaining! They are safe were they are. They have been taught to clean if they need to. They can put themselves to task and clean the environment and have things to do. Its not home for sure but they are safe! Pls mommas, when your sailors is negative.... you be positive! They need to hear our support for sure! We raised them to be strong and this is the least they will be facing in their careers. Be strong for them PLS....
I think it's ok for us to voice our concerns here. It's our safe supportive place to speak our mind. I don't think anyone is complaining. I'm sure the Navy is doing the best they can considering the circumstances. We are Mom's and we want our kids to be comfortable and happy. We all know they won't be that all the time especially in the military but it's definitely a Mom thing to want them to be comfortable. It's a difficult situations and our Sailors will step up and deal with what they have to. I'm sure it all bothers us more than it bothers them. I do wish they had taken them a smidge further away though lol!! Seems like they are still going to experience lots of wind and rain and maybe flooding there in Columbia. I guess time will tell. Happy Hurrication everyone!!
What I am saying is voicing your concerns on here is one thing. However, it seems that some are feeding into the sailors not liking the conditions of the place they are in. I understand parents wanting "comfort". However, they joined the NAVY so pls understand they gave that up when they signed on the dotted line. The navy isn't "comfortable". Once school is over they will be in some places you wont like. So evacuation is just the beginning of some of their experiences. Its the rough truth. Pls offer them encouragement and strength as they go through some of these kind of things.
Just to clarify - my son actually did not complain at all. He didn't say anything - just shared the photo. Other than the pic, he hasn't sent anything more - either positive or negative. I am very supportive, encouraging and thankful. Just as NNLori commented, I think seeing it bothered me more than it does him.
I truly appreciate all of you and Love being a part of this group! Your support and comaraderie is a blessing. Prayers, prayers and more prayers as this storm takes place.
I've been reading all the comments and thinking how lucky you all are to know where your child is and that you can at least get messages. While I'm presuming my child is out on her ship and her husband on his sub, I have not heard from either and that nags at me when my faith falters. My guess is that they hastily put down extra food for their cat & bunny then prayed for the best as they left their house and pets and headed to where duty called. My oldest daughter was willing to make the 5 hour drive to get the animals a couple days ago, but with no way to contact her sister she didn't risk it.
I have to have faith that they are fine. The Navy's got this. I have a t-shirt that says:
"Fate whispered to the sailor "you cannot survive the storm" and the said answered back "I am the storm"".
This is our safe place where we can share our fears, concerns, accomplishments - you name it! We need to continue to support each other and hold each other up so we can be strong for our Sailors.
Right now the media isn't helping with everything on the hurricane - I get it, they want everyone to be prepared but it can be a bit overwhelming (especially for this CA girl - give me an earthquake any day!).
So not to take away from the seriousness of the situation but wanted to share a few pictures I've seen on FB to help sort of lighten things up a little:

pandalvr - they should definitely look at this as preparation for deployments and underways! I remember many a time B said he went without a meal (or 2 or 3) while the ship was out - definitely a part of the nuke life (and probably others on the ship too).
pandalvr, my daughter was served raw chicken one day on her carrier, food isn't that great and they don't serve mids when they're in port. She keeps food in her locker and when I met her for the tiger cruise she asked me to bring a list of food items.
I texted my son this morning to warn him about food shortages so that he can take his car and stock up some snacks. He replied that there is a Burger King and Popeye's chicken on base... so he was good.
Hang in there moms... this too shall pass. Hopefully they are making use of their time there and showing those Army boys how to fix up a barracks! :0)
