I agree. Most of the time they can give 5 days warning on tropical systems. We get tornadoes in the Carolinas too. Those are a scarier, but even then you'd get more warning than for an earthquake.
My submariner said he once slept between a mattress and a torpedo because the boat was rolling 15 degrees. Sailors are tough, and submariners can sleep anywhere.

Hey they are working on EEW (Earthquake Early Warning) systems that will give us seconds to minutes of advanced warning.....plenty of time to "duck & cover".

This WA state Momma doesn't know anything about hurricanes, tornadoes, or even earthquakes up here - so any of it is uncharted territory for me.

Just for the record, i am not complaining. Just stating fact. If we can't talk among ourselves we will all go stir crazy. 

pandalvr - feel free to continue to share - again that's what we are here for - to be a sounding board for each other....I think Florence just has everyone on edge right now....and understandably so!

With hurricanes you hide from the wind and run from the water. Earthquakes, Volcanoes.... think I'll stay in FL.

Everyone remember to wear your RED tomorrow!

Got off the phone with boy-boy a little bit ago. He had no idea the storm was going to hit as hard as it is there. I was telling him about the possible extended power outages and all, telling him to stay off his phone and keep it charged as much as he can. You'd think that someone on their phone as much as he is would have a portable charger. Gave general "mom" advice. My only ask of him was if I sent him the text "ok?" he sends back "Y" or "N" in reply. This is the first time anything this big has happened with us this far away. It's been just the two of us for about 5 years, so I'm a little nervous, scared, worried. I know they'll keep him safe, but nobody keeps your kid safe the way mom does lol

Good evening ladies. I called my son around 3 pm or so their time and as best as I could tell they were getting dinner in the galley. We talked about the sleeping conditions and yes, some have it better than others. Some who got there later are basically in the gym, from what he described. He, despite his delay from his car issues, was one of the earlier arrivals and still didn't end up in one of the nicer BEQ's but he at least had electricity and showers, although they were running out of toilet paper (I forgot to tell him his Dad's Army story about the one square toilet paper rule). {No complaining, he was conveying} - He did say that some of the sailors were in nicer barracks like their BEQ's. Then some of the even later arrivals might have actually been housed in motels. 

Keep in mind, there are a lot of sailors at NNPTC that had to be housed, especially when the orders changed for all sailors in the BEQ's to also evacuate to the same location instead of being allowed to travel elsewhere. 

My son also conveyed that they had really early muster times and they were cracking down on anyone leaving the Base. He was doing his best to encourage the sailors who were asking  to understand that the muster times and restrictions were most likely to make sure they were all accounted for. We only spoke briefly due to his eating. 

Then about 1600 their time, he told me he was safe in his berthing. When I asked about storms tonight? He responded with something that did not make sense - but did reply that is why they had to muster early and be in their quarters. 

Just wanted to let everyone know what I did know and the Navy is doing all to keep our sailors safe.

JayDee - I understand your concerns. I was there yesterday, honestly, I think yesterday, I would have preferred knowing my son was on a ship than driving in traffic. Prayers for the furbabies.

Chipmunk - I busted out laughing when I saw the one square toilet paper rule. My dad taught us that when we were little (he was Air Force but claimed this was a Boy Scout thing).

JayDee659 - prayers for your daughter and SIL. I have to keep reminding myself that God’s got this. BTW - I love the slogan on your shirt. May I ask where you got it?

May our sailors have peaceful sleep no matter where they are tonight!

Chipmunk, I did get an email from my daughter, in response to mine, it said "yup, I'm on the ship".  She didn't answer me about her husband but I'm guessing he's out too.

Sounds like Norfolk won't take a direct hit and it's my hope that the cat & bun will be just fine.

JayDee659 - Glad to hear you had some contact with your Nukette. Would she even know if her husband was out to sea as well?  I just thought of that. May the fur babies be kept safe!

Thinking about our evac sailors and looking at the NWS, I am mindful that they could be waiting a few more days to ride this one out than it was last year. Without internet and needing to watch their phone use, it will be important for them to trust their commanders and deal with the limited freedom and flexibility, especially if it is a day or so before the storms really hit them hard.

As my mother would tell us, "This is all a good learning experience." Prayers for them continue as it looks like they may be having to ride out the storm for a lot longer than their evac was last year

Chipmunk, no she may not know for sure.  On the other hand she may know but will not comment due to OPSEC.  She is super mindful of OPSEC and may go way overboard (no pun intended) but better too much than to make a mistake.

JayDee659 - that is true. It is good you know that about your daughter. It would at least help comfort me a little to think she might know but I don't.

I know this is our Nukes page, but I have to brag on my HM at boot camp she was 1 of only 6 in her division ( boys too) to pass her pft on the first try. She ran 1 1/2 mile in 12 minutes did 48 push-ups and 85 set ups. I knew all that money I shelled out for travel sports would pay off someday! So proud of her

I saw the weather channel this morning and the flooding in NC.  It's just unbelievable the storm surge. Chipmunk - I agree, this evac could be a bit longer then last year.  I pray that everyone stays safe.

Ok, I laughed about the toilet paper rule.  I know it's not funny, but it is lol!

Chipmunk, I didn't even think to tell my Sailor to be careful with his cell phone usage. He's usually good about that. But he got really careless keeping track of his money (...the overdrafts!) and his data. He blew through 3gb the day they evacuated. I covered his O/D charges because there were 3, each less than $2.00 and the o/d charges for those would be ridiculous. Then I helped him get logged into the verizon account today. His line is actually free with the new plan they have, so we told him he could stay on our family plan, but he needed to watch his data. I forgot to get him a separate log on before he left though. So I got that set up and then sent him a "this is your mom message for the day" and reminded him to be responsible and watch his data and watch his spending. I got a humble, "aye aye, ma'am. I promise I will." 

Getting my Sailor to remember ALL the parts of adulting has been interesting.

Got a text from the boy a little bit ago, said the base was flooded and they had to stay inside. He didn't specify if it was the one in GC, or where he was. Said they were getting MRE's for dinner and everyone was happy about it lol. Just wanted to give an update for those that may not know.

Amarrah - thank you for the update. I know my sailor said the wind has really picked up when I talked to him this afternoon.

Havasu - I know it isn't funny but I had to chuckle. You have had a lot of difficulty with phones etc., even when he was at BC as I recall. I planned to text my son this morning, but life got very busy today. 

My son texted me about an hour ago and said: "Rains starting. Alive and well, though sleepy."  

I texted him back - telling him to keep phone charged and off of it and then asked him a question to see if I could get a yea or nay to Amarrah's post yesterday. No response, so I am assuming he is listening to me or orders from above. 

Hope others have received texts. I think he has a pretty good SLPO, I assume they travel with the sailors, but not sure. I know a few weeks ago before a difficult test, one of his instructors told him to go home call his family and get to sleep. That sort of encouragement is the kind this mom likes to hear.

We have focused on our sailors, I just wanted to check in and see how any of our families on the coast are faring. Thoughts with you today, as I keep unpacking (yes unpacking) glass ware that has been in storage to get ready for my sale. 

Chipmunk, the phone issues with this kid is bordering on comical. He ordered a brand new fancy phone when he got to GC. I reminded him to get a case and a screen protector, so he did... but he forgot to change the address and Amazon sent it to us! Then, I looked up the specs online for his old and new phones and told him the specs said the SIM card in his current phone was too big for his new phone, so he'd have to go to a Verizon store and have them get him the right size. Since he hasn't phased up yet, he had to wait through the week and then got an Uber on a Saturday to Verizon. He gets there, and they take the SIM out of the old phone and simply put it in the new phone. I felt terrible that I didn't suggest he check it himself, since it had been sitting with him on base all week! My husband laughed and said, "Honey, he made it into the NUKE program. If he didn't think to check that SIM card for himself, there's not a thing more you can do to help him." Ah well. Life lessons. Double check things for yourself, even when Mom gives you the info! Whoops!

Has anyone heard if there is flooding at GC?

NickSydmom - I am not sure about GC. My son said they were not flooded at evac site, but wasn't sure when I asked him about GC.

NickSydmom, at least I'm not the only one! LOL!!!

As far as flooding at CG my son said tonight during our texting that it did flood in GC. That they had a gov (no clue what that is or what he meant by it) check to make sure they could go back and that's all he heard. He didn't know where on base it was flooded.

My son text to let me know that he is driving back to GC this morning.

My son is back at GC. His words "My only experience with hurricanes has been Florence, the one that promised desolation across the east coast then took the weekend off". Love that boy. Oops man

Kooohbear, that is too funny! My son just texted me that he s back too. He said there was flooding, but not at BEQ. I asked if he had to do cleanup today, and he just responded with a simple, "No." Full of info, as per usual. LOL! 

Wow - I feel blessed. Mine told me not only that he made it back, that he was one one of the last to leave. He also said they have no clean up or no mandatory study hours. Just getting ready for tomorrow. He said there was a bunch going to study anyway because they have a test coming up (was supposed to be last Wednesday) that some feel far behind now.... I spoke to him for over 6mins..... wow miracles do happen!!! Lol

i usually just wait for Chipmunk to post cuz I learn more from her sailor than my own - lol.  Thanks Chipmunk your son is an information godsend!!!! 

Glad all our sailors are back home in a clean, comfy, not flood or hurricane devisated environment!! Hugs to all the mommas - they r all safe and sound!

Even when lack restrictions, we still get one word anwers. I only fot arrived. 

Thanks Ceej0347 - My son texted while we were at church, safe and sound but may need new battery or alternator. When I talked to him earlier, he just sounded mostly tired and shared the same about study time. But those with PS graduation coming up are feeling the pressure, along with make-up days on the weekend, so trying to get a car fixed is that much more of a burden. Also, he was hoping to have his b'day off this year - at least the holiday near it but that looks to possibly be gone as well. 

So, last year's hurrication was easy, since he was INDOC, this year it was a lot more of a chore. Glad they are all back to their somewhat regular routine and mine is just gearing up more.
