Glad to hear that the Charleston/GC area was spared and that everyone's sailor made it back safe. It doesn't look like NC was as lucky. Lots (and lots) of flooding - I just can't believe how much rain has fallen and continues to fall there. It's very sad seeing the pictures on the news. Please continue to keep everyone that was in Florence's path in your thoughts.
NickSydMom - he believes he is staying in GC since enough put in for BS. It is still a long drive for us. Flights are probably about equal, but most of my family doesn't care for cold weather, so the heat and humidity is fine for my son.
NickSydMom: Our daughter just moved to BS and she loves it. Even though she's still 3.5 hours away from us, it's such a comfort to have her close(r). She also finds Prototype less pressure as it's more hands-on, less straight academics. Chipmunk, we're at the opposite end of the weather spectrum from your family: we love cold weather and even driving in snow! GC weather was like a permanent sauna! ;))
My son is in Prototype and was able to come home for the hurrication. He's been told he doesn't have to be back until Wednesday. I'm seeing now that he'll have to drive all the way around North Carolina to get back. Problem is, he drove up by himself. I'm thinking of sending my husband back with him to stay until the trains are running again. Now I'm just praying that my son agrees to this, because he'll probably say, "I'll be fine, mom. Stay calm."
SailorsLIMom - LOL - I agree though, I don't like humidity. My youngest likes cold as long as there is snow. Went on a winter campout up north, and slept in a homemade igloo!! Loved it. Big brother was just fine staying at home.
WonderGeekwoman...my son had the same problem during hurricane Matthew. It took him over 17 hours to get back due to all the detours. He was calling us for help with which way to go and was late getting back. If your husband is available that sounds like a great plan. It could end up.being a very long ride.
WonderGeekWoman - I think it's a good idea if dad goes with him - there's just too much going on in NC and I would hate to have something happen. It's just always easier to make decisions when someone else is there - and like Ceej0347 says, make it "dad's idea".
SailorsLIMom - Not sure if you have looked at the Ballston Spa group. It's not real active but you might find some useful info there. B loved being in Ballston Spa - and we enjoyed visiting too!
Thank you Chipmunk and B'sNukeMom! Snow igloo sounds really cozy, maybe more than it was...lol Daughter would have loved that. And I'll definitely check out that BS link. We drove by the racetrack when she moved in up there, and it was really pretty!
WonderGeekWoman, I think it's a good idea for dad to go with him too. If he balks at it being your or his dad s idea, you may want to tell him something along the lines of "We absolutely know and trust that you handle this, but drives like this can really tire someone out and Dad can help take over driving if you get tired. And if you don't, you'll have someone to chat with all the way back!"
Ha, apparently I am completely unable to predict how he'll react to anything I say nowadays. He thought it would be good to have Dad go with him, so great! LOL! I started looking up flights for hubby to return, and found out from son that he's already contacted his SPLO to see if that flight could be reimbursed. Sometimes he amazes me...well, he pretty much always amazes me, but sometimes with larger amazements. ;)
Hello everyone! So super lucky our sailors came "home" to little destruction. Loved the earlier comment about Florence coming in the then taking the weekend off, or something to that effect.
Hopefully someone has better information than I have. Has anyone heard about A-school graduations? My sailor's is scheduled for the 5th and unfortunately I am in crunch time of changing flight reservations. Thanks again!
The Hammer, Thanks so much for the information. I have been anxiously awaiting a text. I assume it is going to be the same for all Nukes. Can you PM yours son's Rate? (Think we call it that!)
AZNukeGma - I plan to send in an appeal for the charges but am not holding my breath. I LOVE flying SW (They are my fav) but when I checked airfares from MKE they were much higher than flying out of ORD. If they deny my appeal, I simply won't fly their unfriendly skies again.
My son graduated BC 9/7 and is at GC. He hasn’t started his classes yet. I believe they start next week. He wanted a couple of small things shipped to him. Should I use the INDOC address? TIA!
Gina - you should be able to use the INDOC address.
The Hammer - Yikes! That's a crazy amount of money. We almost always fly SWA but I get it - sometimes it just doesn't work out. Good luck with the appeal.
Son and hubby are on their way back to GC. I feel so much better that they're together for the long trip around NC. So proud of my son, no matter how many times he says stuff like, "it's not that big of a thing." I am so incredibly grateful for the 6 unexpected days we got to spend together.
WonderGeek-from which direction were they coming from? I have a friend who is traveling from PA to Parris Island tomorrow for a marine boot camp graduation and they don’t know how to get around N.C.?
Working on trying to change flights with United today. My son said to call United and let them know that the hurricane has caused a military function to be delayed. I am going to try! Wish me luck. :)
My son and family got home to very little damage to their home. The ground that isn't sod, like mulched area in front, is torn up and some flower pots were blown over but otherwise all seems OK. I wish we could say the same for the poor folks in NC. And it isn't over yet. Prayers for all victims.
I feel so bad for you moms changing flights. Good luck!
I'm waiting to hear how this down time will affect Power School Graduations. I'm just glad it wasn't worse and everyone is getting back safely. My best to those traveling and having to deal with the NC road closures. That poor state, It's going to take a while to recover.
I'm thinking of you ladies as you try to change your flights. I hope you're are able to get some cooperation and assistance due to the fact it was an act of nature. Keep us posted.
NNLori, I had a call from my son tonight. They still don't have a definite, but there seems to be a possibility that PS graduation in Oct is going to be pushed back a week. So, we are still in limbo, but I am planning for the first date and will make adjustments to the next week if we need to.
Chipmunk--Yea, I'm hearing rumors of the December PS graduation being pushed back as well but I'm waiting to hear official news from my son. I'm not sure they can do that since supposedly there will be a Holiday shut down. But I guess they have the power to change that as well. I guess I just have to be patient and see what happens. It's constant wait and see isn't it???? LOL!!
My son said it has been told to him by the captain that the December power school graduation was moved from December 14 to December 20th. Waiting to see how cemented that date is....
This momma's mind is at rest this morning after hearing from my Nuke last night. While my daughter is rarely on the flight deck, I know that she and her friends go up there sometimes to watch the jets take off. After yesterday's announcement of the fatality on the flight deck I was rather worried until she responded to an email. My heart goes out to the family of the sailor who was killed in the accident.
JayDee659 - I am so sorry to hear of the loss of one of our sailors. My focus has been anywhere but on news of any sort lately. I am glad to know that your heart and mind is at peace though with news from your daughter. The family will be in our prayers.
Jana - I hope you see this. I had an email that you had sent to the group, come to my regular inbox. It is best to just post your question on this comment wall, or start a discussion above. Those "group messages" don't seem to work well.
You mentioned the recruiters. - In BC your daughter doesn't deal with the recruiters. At about the 6th week, they will meet with a career counselor (? title) to help place them either as an MM, EM or ET rating in the Nuke field. There are various factors that go into that selection and they do their best to find the best fit for your sailor but as many on here will tell you, it is the needs of the Navy first and then your SR's desire or ability that is next.
Other advice, I just recommend that you read through the pages posted on the right and be sure to click View All. The most important thing for you as a mom is to stay flexible - Semper Gumby - as B'sNukeMom tells us, and be encouraging and supportive of your daughter. And maybe friend request with JayDee659 - she has a Nukette as well. When she gets to GC, there will be other sailors able to help her figure things out, and the females are all housed in one BEQ, so she should be surrounded by lots of veteran knowledge.
Jana, let me know if I can help you with anything.
Chipmunk, I was thinking about housing. Not sure if they've mixed it up with the room reassignment but it used to be that all the females were in the "Seawolf". My daughter said it got to be known as the "SHEwolf" due to the high number of females.
I had to rearrange our travel dates but in the end I am being refunded a little bit just by changing my travel dates by one day. I called United directly. One less thing to stress about. Praying for the family of our lost sailor.
Jana - got your message - and I agree with what Chipmunk said - post your questions on here and you'll get a better response. Since your daughter is in BC now the recruiter is out of the picture....The Navy has a method as to how they decide whether they are an MM, EM or ET but yep, at the end of the day it's the needs of the navy! (I believe it's been mentioned before that they use a sorting hat lol!) Anywho, it all works out in the long run!
It's hump day and I need more time!! - Sorry for all of you working ladies, I know you look forward to the weekend!!
I spent all yesterday with the man who helped me price most of the "valuable stuff". We are still trying to get our couple moved into their house - city issues with getting the water turned on- ugh! Anyway, I forgot to sign out earlier -
JayDee659 - LOL!! All I know is my son said they were the closest to the galley!! His being the farthest away!!
Nursemom - I'm so sorry I couldn't get back on here sooner! I'm sure your friend figured out the route by now, but just in case...if they put Knoxville, TN and Atlanta, GA as stops on their GPS, they'll get around NC safely. Hubby and son did the 15 hours that GPS predicted in 15.5 hours. Guess they had quick breaks!
JayDee - How sad!! Praying for the friends, family and shipmates of the sailor on your daughter's ship.
Very sad to hear of the sailor that lost their life. It breaks my heart and I pray the family finds comfort. I pray for safety for everyone in NC as well.
