3 B's Mom- I'm so sorry about the bad experience your younger son had. I'm wondering if the number of recruits going through right now is part of the issue. When my son graduated which will be a year on 10/20 his division was 333. It isn't 10/20 yet I think I saw a division number 378 that has already graduated. I could be wrong but it seems like there are a lot more people going through lately. Probably makes it much harder for RDC's. When there is a question they may be less likely to take the time to make it work. Just a thought. I'm so sorry, but I'm sure he will find his way.
Chipmunk- I hope your estate sale is going well. Take time for yourself. Take a break from all the stress and get a pedi or something!! You deserve it.
Tulip-- I think it's amazing that your son prepared in advance to wish you all a Happy Birthday!! That is the sweetest. Goes to show how very important you all are to him. Very thoughtful guy!! My heart would be bursting!! I'm not looking forward to my son being deployed. He won't be on a sub but I'm sure contact is still limited. :( I need to appreciate my ability to talk to him now. Always appreciate what you have when you have it I guess.
Okay, so not sure this was a good idea, but I tried, anyone else have any experience in whether or not our sub sailors can wear noise cancelling headphones when they sleep?
Our sailors birthday is this month and we thought that maybe those would be a good present, but now I'm having second thoughts as to whether or not the technology will interrupt other stuff on the sub?

Good morning - I apologize in advance for the long post, but I had quite a traumatic experience yesterday. It's times like this that living alone is no fun!
Firs of all, I am ok! Yesterday morning as I was coming home, I disarmed my alarm on the app on my phone on the way. I stopped at end of driveway and got out to check the mail. I noticed white car with lights on parked on side of street and thought it was odd. I pulled into my garage and heard bang which I thought was weird. I came in my house and a man with a bag over shoulder came out of my sailors room toward me and pushed by. I was stunned, terrified and in shock but tried to stop him. He ran out the front door as I grabbed him and chased him. He got away of course and took off in white car. I checked my security logs and he had been in the house only 6 minutes before I got home and I had my alarm disarmed for only 17. I am ok - shaken but fine. He took all my jewelry, jewelry boxes and still taking inventory, but could have been so much worse. He took the pillowcases off my bed to take my stuff! I still can't believe I grabbed him, but he did lose his ball cap that the police took to run for DNA to see if he's had any prior arrests.
Omg! How horrible and terrifying! So, so glad that your OK! Things can be replaced. You can not! I so hope they catch the person who did this to you! Sending prayers and big hugs to you From Washington State!
Everyone's worst nightmare! Probably fortunate that you weren't arriving home earlier, when the robbery was in progress. I surely hope that they catch the guy. You grabbed him and chased him? Courageous, girl! I'd have been cowering behind the goldfish bowl--and I don't even have any goldfish! Glad you're OK!
KayCee - wow so sorry to hear that! And I agree it could have been so much worse - thank goodness he just ran out (luckily he was a coward!). I hope they can get some DNA and find him. Be careful....
CSW, I don't think noise-cancelling headphones would interfere with anything. It is an analog audio technology, so less RFI than other gadgets they are likely to have.
Subs are a unnatural and somewhat bizarre environment that sailors have to adapt to. My son said that he had really strange dreams the first couple of weeks, and he had some trouble for a while because they lower the O2 levels to reduce the risk of fire. I have on good authority that seasoned submariners can sleep practically anywhere.
My daughter just turned the Subs down. Actually glad. Definitely not for everyone. She could actually be stationed eventually close to home. We have 2 bases very close.
KayCee, I'm sorry that happened but good for you trying to grab him. It may have been enough to make him drop everything, you never know until you try.
NNLori, my Nuke bought a car at GC then traded it in on one she liked better. Her husband bought a truck while they were there. They registered both in SC.
We're re-siding our house and replacing all but a couple windows. On Saturday my husband popped out the old floor length window. My dogs and cat had a blast letting themselves out at will. My Nuke's dog refused to do this, waiting patiently by the door for me to open it, such a good girl. While we were breaking for dinner we heard one of the dogs barking at something out front, next thing we knew she'd jumped out the opening and ran into the yard. She was disappointed when we boarded it up for the night. Hopefully the new window will go in today.
Wears Large Hats thank you. I did it anyway and sent them for his birthday along with with some BACON JAM! He'll either think its funny and good and try it or give it away.
Getting close to having him leave now in the final weeks of ELT and he says it's crazy! He's been on back-to-back watches because not everyone is fully qualified on the reactor at BS so hoping to cheer him up a bit with a fun surprise that is useful as well.
I used to know how to make him smile and it's getting a bit more difficult these days :)
Welcome to our newest member ~ Stacey44! Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page. And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have.
KayCee, holy cow! Glad you're ok!! I think my dogs would probably scare off most intruders - they are big babies when you get to know (one is a lab, the other is heinz 57) them but they sure sound ferocious on the other side of the door!!
As far as the 12/20 vs 12/21 PS grad date goes, I asked my son to confirm since a Thursday grad date is so odd, but he said it is due to holiday stand down....Thursday 12/20 is the correct date. At least as of yesterday lol - I haven't heard anything new today :)
What about the Xmas holiday? How many days are we looking at for leave. She won't even be at GC until October 27th. We are really looking forward to having her home. Even for a week!
Jana - they usually have 2 weeks of holiday stand down but each sailor doesn't get 2 weeks. They will split it up but that being said there have been situations when some don't get any time off. You won't know until the time is closer - and once their SLPO starts talking about it they should put in a chit for time off. Again, no guarantees. And you will learn that holidays will now be celebrated when you are together, not always on what the calendar says!
Thanks for the add! I wish I’d have known about this site much earlier. I’ve been through boot camp graduation & A school graduation. Now I’m looking forward to Power school graduation in October. We are in the process of trying to find my girl housing in SC. If anyone has any “need to know” tips, I’m all ears! Thanks again!
Welcome Annie Lee to the Nuke moms group! Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page. Hopefully you can find something that will work!
Oh my goodness KayCee, what a scary thing to have happen. I'm so grateful you weren't hurt. What a crazy experience.
Happy Birthday COTwin hope you had a great day!!!
We have a friend who was on a Sub and my husband took my son over to talk to him before he left for boot camp to a realistic idea of what it would be like to live on one. After their conversation as they were leaving and waking out the door my son looked at my husband and said, "yea, I'm not doing that!" Special kind of person to be able to live in that environment. Definitely not for everyone. :))
If there is anyone who has recently been through the transition from Power School to Prototype I would love to see a new topic to the right of this page talking about finding housing and perhaps purchasing a vehicle. Any info about how much time before graduation should this be arranged and recommended apartment complexes would be awesome. I see a lot of great information about what they do during Prototype but not the process of moving off base and what kind of help they get or when it actually has to happen. All those graduating Power School in December are staying in GC so there will be a lot more people looking for housing this time around. Do they move while still in Power School? Or do they do it the day they graduate? I have a lot of questions knocking around in my over active brain. Any help is greatly appreciated. :))
Welcome to our newest member ~ daisysdca! Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page. And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have!
I don’t have much information; my son is not much of a communicator. I can tell you that he and one of his roommates moved off base before they finished power school. Wish I could give you more information!
B'sNuke, Safe travels and have fun! We'll miss you!
Once my son left me he was Mr. Independent. He bought a car and insured it while at GC without any input from me or his dad. He found a place to live in BS with no help from us either. The navy provides tons of support for them and they also rely on each other. They sell used furniture to each other and even sometimes just give it to each other, or go together to buy cheap stuff knowing it's all temporary. I don't think anyone here has anything to worry about. Easier said than done, I know. Letting go can be tough. My sailor was the youngest of my 4 kids so really hard for me but he learned from mistakes and came out better for it. I'm so grateful to the Navy.
NancyJo....my son was the same. My youngest and wanted to do everything on his own. And he did just fine. It's amazing what the navy does for these fine young men and women. I still worry about him, but he tells me very little. It's probably best that way. I just pray everyday for him and his sub mates.

Here's a question I haven't found a current answer to: When our Nukes are deployed (carrier) and they write letters home (not to me - to his GF!)) do they need to put stamps on the envelopes? Update – My communication opportunities are very limited until the middle of the month. Estate sale went well, with a little help from my friends. But I am still clearing items and doing another sale at my friend’s location after we close on the house, so it is 24/7, as I told my sailor until I am done. NNLori – Little info is given to the sailors regarding what to do about housing per my son’s comment last night. They are told to get things arranged sooner rather than later. – My pedicure consisted of trimming my toenails last night! BigSky21 – Mine is staying in GC, hopefully he is getting his rooming situation worked out. Finding a roommate was the hardest for my son. What he thought was going to work fell through. And then others were already rooming with someone else.
Also, tell your sailors to put their license plate # in their phone or something so they have it. Mine texted me late, the other night, asking for his – because it wasn’t convenient to get out to his car. Well, this Mom had a break down, because I couldn’t get the info for him when I knew exactly where to find it, if I had been at my house. So mom’s when your sailor’s are doing things on their own, and don’t “need” you, it isn’t all that bad either. He needed it for evacuation travel reimbursement. I believe SC requires registration be kept in the car, so that wasn’t in BEQ with him either.
Oops! It was NickSydMom that asked me which PS location. Hope all is well with you BigSky21.
I really don't see how you ladies do all of this on your phones. I am trying to use our house phone that is a smart phone, to at least read regular emails, but it is too hard to type on it.
Hey moms! I just wanted to pop in and let ya'll know that while I don't always comment, I'm on nearly everyday keeping up. Honestly, there are questions being asked that either I hadn't thought about, or were asked before I could. I'm so glad I found this site, and know that there are people out there than can sympathize and answer questions. My son isn't always the most forthcoming with info.
Hello everyone! Stopping in to introduce myself! My son left for BC monday and upon graduation will be heading to GC. Looking forward to learning from all :-)
Wecome aboard, daisysdca! Glad to have you! You're probably still a little in withdrawal with your guy just gone to BC. Hang in there. You will find good info to your right on this page all about what your son will be doing but don't hesitate to come here for any questions or just when you need to check in. That's why we are here. We are all over the map as far as how far in our own kids are. Mine has been in about 8+ yrs now but most here are still in the pipeline learning the ropes. Hang on tight cuz it gets a little crazy. ;)
Lol chipmunk, you had me scratching my head a little wondering if I had been posting in my sleep....N is staying in GC also, but he hasn’t got to the looking for a place stage yet (I don’t think)...grad is not until Dec.....
LADIES, if any of you wear leggings, check out the leggings linger.com....they have lots of Navy themed designs, including R.E.D.....I think I will have to order some
