Was just awakened at 4 am by one of the best ways...a call from my Sailor! We got to talk for 28 minutes. So good to hear from him as it has been nearly 2 months since he’s underway on a sub. Ah the joy of hearing your son’s voice!
I had a nice surprise for my birthday this weekend. My oldest daughter (not my sailor) came home for the weekend but as a surprise to me, brought her younger sister (my Nuke) along. I had no clue she was coming home! Thank goodness they told their daddy so he could secretly get my Nuke's room ready with fresh sheets.
First I had a very nice dinner last week with WonderGeekWoman.
Was nice to wake up this morning and see all of your exciting news.
The Hammer - I did the same thing for my sons A school grad - enjoy the graduation and the flight home and the whole week.
Tulip- that's awesome - I can't imagine yet quite what that is like - to have them underway - especially on a sub.
JayDee659 - what a great surprise.
And now I'll chime in with my own exciting news. Our son passed his 100% test at prototype (BS) last week and is now on the last downhill slide. And the best part is we are heading out to see him later this week - he has his 4 day break. We haven't seen him since Power School grad the beginning of May and he hasn't been home since Christmas last year.
KayCee and others with kiddos that originally were supposed to graduate PS on 12/14...first I heard grad was pushed to 12/21, then son told me it was going to be 12/20 due to holiday stand down. I keep seeing conflicting reports of the date between 12/20 and 12/21, so I asked son again yesterday - he said his SLPO is still telling them 12/20, but somebody else on FB said they had it confirmed that it will be 12/21 so it's hard to tell which date is correct. I'm driving, so all I have to do is change my day off, but I know some of you are trying to make travel plans....all I can say is keep checking with your kids.... :(
The Hammer, Tulip, JayDee659, and ProudofK, thank you all for sharing your news at your different stages of the pipeline—Love hearing all the stories! Happy Monday all!
Hi all. Happy Monday. Does anyone know if it’s possible to change rates? My sailor is going to talk to someone about changing from MM to ET? He is probably 3/4 of the way through A school and doing well but feels he would be better suited as ET? He said if it was approved he would probably have to almost start over but he would be ok with that. We’ve told him that if he really feels strongly about it then he should have the discussion and see what comes of it? Does anyone have any experience or insight with this? Thanks!
It's my understandings that the rates are selected by needs of the Navy, and there are working requirements for a lot more MM's than there are ET or EM. Your sailor can inquire, but unless there are open needs it may not happen. This is also the same situation when they put in their wish list for orders.
Nursemom good info to know. Mine just arrived to bootcamp and I know I am early joining this group but watching all the info flying into this threads is educating me. Thank you to all moms!
Kbpoohbear - my son has comps tomorrow and A school grad on Friday. I haven't heard when they get comp scores... only that he's been studying in every available moment for them.
Oh... and today United contacted me regarding Hurricane Michael to let me know that there would be no fees if I'd like to change my flight! No way United... this mama is heading to GC on Thursday!!! (I did eventually get refunded $400 for the last flight changes).
Nursemom - From what my son told me, there are no rate changes once they are set and head to GC (A school.) That goes for any direction. Either changing from MM to EM or ET, or ET back to EM or MM. I would suggest you encourage your son to look into ELT (MM mom's correct me if I am wrong). This is training after they have completed MM Prototype.
daisysdca - the Nuke ratings are selected when they meet with the career counselors around the 5th or 6th week of boot camp and as CSW stated the needs of the Navy are priority, because they have about 50% MM, 30% EM, 20% ET, but the selection is also based on factors related to their specific ASVAB line scores, indicating what they are more inclined to be good at. I believe they also discuss with the sailors which rating interests them, but the final decision seems to be needs of the Navy.
Nursemom - I would encourage you to encourage your son to learn his stuff and help any other shipmates that may be struggling. Each one of the schools have more intense studying and memorization. If he is actually not struggling, even if he feels he is not challenged, he can be thankful, he actually feels like he is "getting it."
Kbpoohbear - I have lost track where you son is at, but if A school then they take Comps on Monday, I think, and usually know before, but most likely by 6 pm GC time. There is suppose to be an opportunity for someone to do a verbal retake of A school comps so that they can still graduate with their class that Friday but it is not a guarantee as happened with one of my son's A school shipmates.
Closing on the house is next Monday, 15th - I will be back off for awhile but I read the comments each night on the phone! (using data to type this!) So happy for everyone's good news, phone calls, and visits. Too much is happening that my Oct b'day children are doing with out mom's treats this year. My sailor called his sister last night to make sure she had gotten his b'day wish, now we just have to not forget him on Friday.
RE: rate changes - If a rating is too hard, there is no switching to another Nuke rating - you have to rerate elsewhere in the Navy. TahoeZephyr shared her son's experience this last year, it is at the end of that discussion which I just bumped. DTP and reclassification.
Btw - Her son graduated his Gunner's Mate school and is now at his duty station, I believe. He is doing well.
Chipmunk- My son scored a 98 on the ASVAB. Good to know he will know before he goes to GC for school what rate he will be. Although I really don't think he cares. The NAVY has been a dream of his since he was a little boy. We always just told him to go to college first :-) He is little older than some when entering the military but we are so glad he did the college thing first :-) Adds a different perspective on his career. Thaks for all the info!
daisysdca - just to clarify, after I signed off earlier, the word I was looking for was aptitude. The ASVAB score is only one factor in the selection process and I believe they look more closely at the potential aptitudes of the sailor for various rates, not just the score - With my son they also asked him what he wanted and he said "to learn it all!!" A specific ASVAB score will not determine which rating your Nuke will receive but may play a part in the determination. But you are correct, they will know what rating they are before headed to GC, because they will need to know for their dress uniforms at PIR.
As mentioned many times, all of our sailors are very sharp and bright. The other day my son commented that not everyone at GC is wise in their choices, but it is nice being around people who are in the same intellectual caliber because they challenge each other.
Freebird - my son called me in the earlier afternoon, sooner than I had expected. It just depends on how quickly the tests are graded. Hopefully, you will hear soon.
Same thing happened to my son as pandalvr. He wanted ET but got MM. I was so disappointed for him, but he told me later that he really didn't care which rate, he just wanted to be a Nuke. So then I stopped being disappointed for him... LOL!
Chipmunk, I haven't been on here much lately but I wanted you to know that you have been in my prayers! I hope all continues to go smoothly with the closing!
Kaycee - I'm so glad you're okay! You are totally Wonder Woman! I sure hope they catch him!
Amarrah - I am also really good at pretty much just reading and enjoying the information everyone shares. I love this group!! I get all the messages by email and read them on my phone, then forget to respond on my computer, most of the time.
daisysdca and all other new moms - Welcome! This group is amazing help with Navy/Nuke info and an awesome support for everything else in our lives!
Hammer, JayDee, ProudofK, Kbpoohbear - So excited that you get to see your sailors!!
Tulip - Yay, for technology and kids that call when they can!
ProudofK - I had such a nice time at dinner with you!
Like Havasu & pandalvr's sailors, my son had a 98 on the ASVAB, wanted ET and got MM, but he's happy it happened that way. I just thought it was interesting, since questions on motors was his weak spot on the ASVAB. He waffles on whether or not he's going to try to do ELT. He's also changed his mind on going sub...thinks he'll stick with a carrier, which would be just fine with me! However, the stinker put Japan as his first AND second station choices!
These hurricanes are killing me! Just checked the weather and it looks like GC will see the winds and rain on Thursday. Had to call United and change flight to leave here tomorrow instead of Thursday. Good news is that they changed for free this time. This is one expensive graduation... but I'm so proud of my nuke! Anyone else headed to GC for A school grad?
Hello, fellow moms... Iended up talking with my son on the phone for a few minutes tonight when he called to wish his step dad a happy birthday. He mentioned he had a test tomorrow morning and he was feeling really nervous about it. If any of you feel like sending up a prayer early around 7am east coast time, this mama would appreciate it. I told him to please tell me when he had a test he was worried about, because us Navy moms will pray and/or send good thoughts his way! Thank you!
First off, congrats to all the sailors that graduated! I know all you moms are beyond proud! Be safe with the hurricane headed that way.
I said before that my son has to do PS again, and it's turned into a blessing for both of us. 1-I'm a supervisor/manager at a large retailer so getting any significant time off around Christmas is near impossible. 2-Even tho he isn't graduating, and not starting school till next month, he still has studying and something like classwork he has to do, so he'll be beyond ready this next time!
I do have a question, more out of curiosity than anything. I didn't find out about C graduating A school until about a week before. He didn't tell me, and I didn't have you guys. I fussed at him a bit because he didn't tell me. He said A school graduation wasn't really a big deal so it was ok if I didn't come. My question is how big of a deal is it? I know any graduation is an accomplishment, but he kind of blew it off. I don't know if he was trying to make me feel better and not stress over seeing if I could adjust my schedule, or if he honestly thought it was a basic passing from one school to another. I'm just wondering if I missed out on something and if he was the loner kid with nobody there.
Havasu. ..I will be praying for your son early this morning. Let me know how it goes.
Ammarah...my son told me not to.go.to.A school grad, but to.def come to power school. So.we followed his lead and it turned out to.be a great decision. Power school graduation was just that...powerful and I'm so.thankful we went. He was able to stay with us at our hotel and then had some time off. Just my experience, others might be different.
To Amarrah- My son told us the same thing- A school "graduation" is more like a promotion to the next grade. (My kid didn't find out until a couple days before either) He reiterated that power school grad is the more important of the two. Time off and travel are tough, especially when they don't find out if they "pass" or get promoted until a couple days before.
Amarrah, A School graduation is small but it's a nice ceremony, all the graduates come on stage, get a certificate and there's photo ops. I truly enjoyed it and got to spend a long weekend with my daughter. I was planning on going to power school graduation but an untimely hurricane had them evacuating the day before and the whole thing was cancelled.
My advice is that you go to any graduation that you can, you never know what tomorrow will bring. Do what you can and enjoy what you do.
Amarrah - I agree with JayDee. We are lucky enough to be within driving distance of GC. There were only 14 visitors at my son's A school grad, and 5 or 6 of those were younger siblings of the grads. Don't beat yourself up about it, but definitely go to PS grad if you are able.
Amarrah and other new moms - if you can make it work then go to all the graduations. A school is small and intimate but still a milestone. As they progress further along their time will be more limited.
Hi everyone - I'm back and we had a fantastic time. It was so good to see B and his GF. The wedding we went to was so much fun - I'll share more later when I have time. Trying to get caught up at work after being gone a week - ugh!
Thanks so much! I feel a little better about not being there now. And I absolutely plan on going to PS grad. Thankfully I'm driving distance from GC, and I ALWAYS book hotels with no cancellation fees.
Thank you for your prayers, Rebecca J! I just heard from him and he said he did really well on the test. He was very relieved.I am too, and I thank you so much again!
Yesterday was my Nukes birthday. She called to, in her words, "thank me for birthing her". She also told me that she'd qualified as senior in her rate! What a nice birthday gift for her.
After a take-off delay (20 plane backup in Chicago) and then toxic fumes in the cockpit, a plane change and then a vending delay... I finally landed in GC late last night! My sailor picked me up at the airport and it was sooo good to see him!!!
Two things so far...
One: Every time... the humidity hits me like a hot towel!
Two: The matresses at the Hampton by Hilton are really hard! Anyone have a recommendation for a hotel with nice, memory foam mattresses?
Can't wait for dinner with my kid tonight and grad in the morning!

daisysdca - just to clarify, after I signed off earlier, the word I was looking for was aptitude. The ASVAB score is only one factor in the selection process and I believe they look more closely at the potential aptitudes of the sailor for various rates, not just the score - With my son they also asked him what he wanted and he said "to learn it all!!" Yesterday was my Nukes birthday. She called to, in her words, "thank me for birthing her". She also told me that she'd qualified as senior in her rate! What a nice birthday gift for her.

Hi all - Happy Thursday!

The Hammer
After a take-off delay (20 plane backup in Chicago) and then toxic fumes in the cockpit, a plane change and then a vending delay... I finally landed in GC late last night! My sailor picked me up at the airport and it was sooo good to see him!!!
Two things so far...
One: Every time... the humidity hits me like a hot towel!
Two: The matresses at the Hampton by Hilton are really hard! Anyone have a recommendation for a hotel with nice, memory foam mattresses?
Can't wait for dinner with my kid tonight and grad in the morning!
