Scram - welcome to the group, I think you joined while I have been preoccupied, thanks for chiming in and sharing!

  • CSW

There's a Subway on base, too, if you want to do a Subway gift card. Walmart is really close to the base and there is a little NEX close to the dorms and a larger NEX near the base entrance. Our sailor actually said there were better deals at the malls for things like running shoes, etc if they used their military discount.  I think his first big purchase after they received their first bonus was a really nice watch.  As any FYI we just got our sailor the noise cancelling Bose earphones as he awaits his orders and he is THRILLED.  I worried a bit, but he said it was just great! Happy Friday and Bravo Zulu to today's graduates.

  • JayDee659

My daughter would frequently walk to the Walmart and the big NEX with her friends.  She also told me that it was pretty easy to catch a ride to the mall with others.  Once she had her own car she would take other sailors to the mall or shopping in turn.  Seems like for the most part they all try to help each other out.

  • SubMom

Chipmunk - so glad you have closed on the house! I hope you can rest this weekend before heading to graduation.

The Hammer - so happy you were able to spend time with your sailor :)

Jen - our sailor's "creature comforts" were his juggling balls, MP3 player and a couple of books (besides running shoes, underwear, laptop)

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hi all - Happy RED shirt Friday!

Chipmunk - yay!  So glad you to hear that the you have closed on the house!  What a relief - and hopefully now you can get some more rest lol!

Jen - like the others have said - don't worry about the calculator, your son will get it figured out.  You could do the NEX card or a Walmart card so he can do some shopping there.

BZ to all those graduating today.

TheHammer - glad you had a good time at graduation.  And how fun that you got to meet another Navy Mom!

Please keep the sailors of the USS Reagan in your prayers.  There was a helicopter crash on the flight deck - sailors injured but from all reports they say none too seriously.

  • MichianaMom

Sorry to ask this question again, but could someone post the link to the live web cam in SD?

Welcome to our newest member ~ Bluemama2!  Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page and the Pages (14) to the right.  Lots of good info there.  Also take a look at the discussion forum (hit "view all") and of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have.

  • WonderGeekWoman

ProudofK - Great pics! I just love historical places. Not such old history in WA as on the East Coast and I can only imagine the feel of Europe and older places.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

  • Jen

Thank you ladies for the information.

  • SailorsLIMom

Any advice from any of you experienced moms know about choosing a Home Port?  Atlantic vs Pacific? Daughter, now in Prototype, has to do this soon, apparently--make out her "Dream Sheet."  We live on the East Coast, would like to have her near(er)--but does it actually make any difference in terms of how often you can see them?

  • WearsLargeHats

We certainly would see our son more if he were stationed in Norfolk or King's Bay. I got the impression he wanted some distance. Hawaii was the top of his list. He was there almost 2 years. 5 or 6 hours is a lot of time difference.
It is all about what your daughter wants. This is her time. If she wants to go far away, be proud that she is capable and independent.
I don't think any of the nuke homeports are really bad. All have their positives and negatives. If she is married, then housing costs, traffic, and the job market are considerations. If single, she will be in base housing and quality of life issues are more the thing.

  • SailorsLIMom

Thank you, WearsLargeHats!  She is surely independent, and we're trying to stay neutral.  As grandparent-aged older parents, though, we're plenty aware of all the time we can get with her.  She's single and wants to have an apartment off base--can they?

  • WearsLargeHats

Generally speaking, commands may require that unaccompanied junior enlisted live in base housing until they are E5 or E4+4years. At least Petty Officers are supposed to get private bedrooms. My son's BEQ apartment at Pearl was pretty nice. 2 bedrooms with a common area and a small kitchen.

There is a chit for everything, but the BEQ might be best for the first year or two, certainly until she gets settled in.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

SailorsLIMom - just remember it's exactly as it states "dream sheet". At the end of the day it will be the old needs of the Navy lol! B had Norfolk last on his list - even below Japan and he still got Norfolk.  His Gf didn't even put Norfolk on her dream sheet (she listed Japan twice) and she got Norfolk.  You just never know. We would have loved for B to be West Coast and close to home but nope. At least we got to visit VA a couple of times and really enjoyed it! I can honestly say if it wasn't for him being stationed there we probably never would have gone there!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    A little detailer humor ;-D

  • SailorsLIMom

Love the humor!  And so does LISailor!  Thanks so much, both of y'all!

  • NickSydmom

My son and daughter both have graduation on Friday. Daughter is at Bootcamp and son is at power school. I’m going to miss my sons graduation but when I get home from Chicago I get a few days with him before he goes to BS. So I’m just happy to see both my babies this weekend.

  • NickSydmom

Chipmunk, when you’re at graduation this Friday my son is probably the tallest guy there 6’4 will you get a picture of him for me?

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Hi Everybody! I've been so busy I've not posted but still visit daily. B'sNuke, that was a laugh out loud moment there. Sometimes I think that is more truth than joke!

Talked to my son last night for his birthday and they are expecting a bunch new students tomorrow. That's exciting! He's had in-laws visiting for the last 10 days and they did sight-seeing although he had to work.

Scary news about the Reagan but so glad no one was killed. Prayers for quick healing for the injured and strength for the sailors who are back at it. Events like that can rattle somebody.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Meanwhile, NickSydmom, thoughts for you with 2 kids graduating the same day. :(  Both such big achievements. I'm proud of you being a Mom of 2 sailors. Hooyah!

  • Chipmunk

NickSydMom - I will do my best to get a picture for you!! I will try to PM you before the night is out. I don't know if he plans to go to the Burger Bash but have him ask around for us. Enjoy PIR with your daughter!

FYI for those going to PS graduation - my son said there is a Burger Bash / Picnic on site, we have to be escorted but the families are welcome. PM me for more info.

B'sNukeMom - thanks for keeping us posted on all the news. I feel like I have lived in my own little hole for the last 2 months. Just buying milk this morning and seeing egg prices had dropped was a revelation to me. I couldn't have done it without my children and my sailor may come home to helping out around the house for a couple of days.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Monday!

NickSydMom - BZ to both your sailors!  Glad you'll at least get to see your son before he heads to BS.  Enjoy your time at PIR.  Hopefully Chipmunk can get you a picture or 2 ;-D

NancyJo - when talking to B and his friends it definitely seems more like truth than a joke lol!  I hope your son had a wonderful birthday!  When I was at the wedding in FL I was talking to another instructor from GC and asked if he knew your son - he didn't recognize his name.  The guy I was talking to is a proto instructor.

So is anyone excited about the World Series?  My team is the Angels so I'm not really invested in the game.  But, B is a Dodger fan and N (other son) is a Red Sox fan.  So both my kids teams are in the World Series!  The trash talking has begun lol!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Welcome to our newest members ~ Traci and navyproud!  Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page and take a look at the discussion forum (hit "view all").  Lots of good info there.  And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have!

  • NNLori

NickSydMom-- What were the odds that both graduations would end up on the same day!! Just crazy. Enjoy your kids!! Precious time together.

Life is busy and I don't get on her as often as I like but I try to keep up with everyone on my phone.

B'sNukeMom- you always have the greatest cartoons or pictures to share. I love it!! The best way to deal with being out of control is to laugh!! I really appreciate the humor!!

I'm thinking of everyone who is planning to go to Power School Graduation this week!! Can't wait to see all the pics and hear the stories!! Counting down till its our turn! :))

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

NNLori - I agree - laughter is a great way to deal with being out of control!  Now if only it counted as exercise lol!

  • Chipmunk

    LOL B'sNukeMom!!

Burger Bash - per my son no RSVP is needed, they always have lots of food. We shall see.

Prayers for all of our sailors tonight as they rest for testing tomorrow.

  • ProudOfK

B'sNukeMom - your picture bragging about totally getting out of bed today really cracked me up - that's about how I feel sometimes.  You've posted this one before and I still laugh every time.

Chipmunk - let's hope it is better planned than the picnic they had when my son was near the end of Power School - they ran out of food - a lot of the sailors didn't get any.  It was different though as it was a couple weeks before the end of Power School if I remember right - long before we would have been there.  I think it was also kind of last minute - sounds like this is being planned ahead a bit so I'm sure it will be fine.  Regardless you'll get a chance to meet sailors and their families - sounds nice.

  • pandalvr

    Good morning ladies

Any other son or daughter about to start power school. Mine will. He has been  in TTrack for 2 months (just missed). I dont hear from my son that often, the shifts are crazy. Hope all do well in this phase.

    Happy Tuesday all!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Thank you Rockydog for the reminder.  The post has been deleted.

  • Chipmunk

ProudofK - I hope so as well. I just hope the weather stays agreeable. I am trying to figure out what to pack. I bought some inexpensive umbrellas yesterday. Then I spoke to my Nuke and he asked me to get one for him so he had an extra black one. His first umbrella went to the wayside in hurricane Florence, so he had to purchase another which was more expensive than the ones I found.

Hope all is going well for your son!

Welcome aboard to our newest members, my apologies yesterday for not commenting. Be sure to share where you are at in the Nuke Pipeline.

CSW - Thanks for the link!

  • SubMom

B'sNukeMom - you always make me laugh! Thank you so much for the light hearted humor :)

Chipmunk - I hope you have a fantastic time at graduation. Hoping the weather is beautiful and the food is fantastic!

pandalvr - My sailor is as an ET and will be classing up this week for PS

  • SubMom

Humor for the day (actual conversation with my husband):

me: I wish car sun visors were made for short people

my husband: They do make them. They are made by Graco and stick to the window

    It's a good thing I love him!

  • WonderGeekWoman

SubMom! Hahahaha! Stinker! I need some of those "short people" visors, too. LOL!

B'sNuke - I always love and need your humorous pics!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

SubMom - oh your hubby is too funny!  I'm right there with you though lol!

  • proudNukemom

I haven’t posted in forever but I do keep up with all the posts.  Just want to say my son passed PS comp ! One happy mama here! I’m already in GC and if anyone can’t be here for graduation I’m happy to get a photo! Luv this group!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

BZ to your son proudNukemom and to all that passed their PS comp today!  Enjoy your visit ;-D

  • Chipmunk

proudNukemom - congratulations!! We will be joining soon. By the way, my son said if it is raining that PS graduation will be inside and split between two groups, so anyone needing pictures please let us know which sections you are in, so we can hopefully cover it all.

You know you are a veteran Navy (Nuke) mom when you start using abbreviations in other emails that only Navy Moms know!! Oops~ I had to stop and spell out PS.

So, tonight has been quite the night. Not the same as two sailors graduating on the same day like NickSydMom - but I definitely felt torn. My sailor was calling to give me his news as my phone battery was dying and I was trying to get it plugged in, find my husband who was bringing me food and get back into the church for my youngest's God and Country Band concert!! Thankfully, my sailor had other family to call and share his happy news. We were able to bless him with calling so he could hear his brother's Advanced Band play Anchors Aweigh before bed tonight.

  • SubMom

proudNukemom , Chipmunk and others that I might have missed - congratulations to your sailors!! I hope you all have a fantastic time!!! NMH

  • Rebecca J

Chipmunk and ProudofK. ..congratulations to you and your sailors. Enjoy the graduation . It is so awesome. My son's had to.be inside and it was fine. Just get there early to get good seats!

  • Rebecca J

Sorry proudnukemom..I typed the wrong name.

  • NNLori

Congratulations to all you who received passing PS Comp calls!!! I'm so excited for you all!! My son doesn't graduate until December but his room mate is in this graduating class but unfortunately he didn't pass his comp. My son says he will have oral boards today. I will keep my fingers crossed for him. I think he has a hard time with tests.

It's my understanding that the students will change housing after this PS graduation. They were planning to do it last graduation but for whatever reason they didn't. For my son it's a pain because he will just have to move again in December but I guess it's a good time to get himself organized.

I can't wait to pictures next week from graduation. It's getting me excited for ours!!! Have a great Wednesday everyone!!

  • NickSydmom

This has been quite a week for my family. We got the I’m a sailor call from one and I mom I passed Comp from the other. The tears have been flowing, so proud of those kids!

  • momterp

Congratulations NickSydmom! I’m sorry you can’t clone yourself for a weekend! Congratulations to all the sailors who passed comps and best wishes for those who have to go through oral boards. Even for those who don’t pass, they have my ultimate respect for all their hard work and they will make the Navy proud in some other way, I feel sure!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Wednesday!

NickSydmom - wow - 2 best calls ever!!!

NNLori - sending positive thoughts to your sons roommate today for his oral board - I'm guessing it's the Ac Board (Academic Board).  He's got this!

Chipmunk - that's awesome that they were playing Anchors Aweigh and your sailor got to hear it!!!

Did you all see that one ticket won the Mega Millions Lottery AND IT WAS SOLD IN SOUTH CAROLINA!!!!  Ok, whose sailor is a multi-millionaire right now?!?
