NNLori - It always strikes close to home with the comps that we can have someone in our midst who struggled. This was one very tough test from my son's comment. He also said this class had less test failures than the last two PS classes had. Hooyah!! to all of the sailors and prayers for those doing oral boards, especially your son's roommate.
Thank you for all your prayers for these sailors and all the heartfelt congratulations!
NNLori my nuke knows your sons roommate I think. He says he is one of the smartest guys and that he just doesn’t take tests very well. My nuke says he thinks he will pass recomp. I think he was in their class.
Chipmunk yeah, mine said only 6 out of about 300 failed, lower than last group and one of lowest numbers. He said typically a lot more fail. 3 were from his class of ET’s. It’s such
Anyone have any information on A school graduation on the 26th? My sailor had very little information. Would like to know which gate to enter thru, timeline, etc.
I attended A school graduation on the 12th. All parents had to be escorted on base by there sailor. My son met us at the NEX and hopped in the car with us to get us through the main gate.
Suen 1965 - Hopefully your sailor will have more info later tonight or on Thur. It varies from graduation to graduation because in April we drove ourselves to the main gate and pulled in on the right side and they had an access list that was checked against our ID's. That is my understanding for Power School graduation this week as well. But A school may be different as Mona shared.
Also, you may use GoogleMaps and put in the address for NNPTC - if you use the satellite view you can orient yourself a little bit with where things are at including the Mini Nex that Mona referred to.
Regarding A school graduation, how often do they occur? My sailor is saying his graduation is scheduled for November 30. Should I book a flight or is this another instance of not knowing until the last minute? He will be home for a short Thanksgiving break the weekend before. Do you think he will get another break after graduation or go right to T-track? He mentioned something about 3 months in T-track but that’s all of the details I’ve gotten.
The graduation date is set - barring a hurricane or freak snowstorm. But, like all things Navy, you won’t know for sure if he passed until that week. They usually comp on the Tuesday before graduation.
I think there is an A school grad of some kiind about every week. Hard to say about leave time. They tend to change things up close to the holidays. You may have to wait until closer to that time for more details.
Nursemom - most likely the date won't change. If you want to be safe get insurance on your flight (which can be expensive) or book with Southwest which allows changes for no fee (except the difference, if any, in the flight).
Thanks for the tips about A school graduation. So thankful for this site and the support of other Navy moms. Congratulations to our most recent graduates wherever they may be in the pipeline. It’s exciting to see your sailors’ successes!
Suen, funny story about my daughter's A School grad. She'd called us beforehand to confirm who was attending so she could add us to the list. The night before she took is on base so we'd know where to go, it was foolproof. We arrived the next morning found the way in, gave the young man our names. He looked at us, asked for ID and held them while he called the Master at Arms. Our names were not on the list The Master at Arms asked us to follow him and left us standing in a hall while he walked into the graduation hall and, with great authority, asked our daughter to step forward. She stood up swiftly, turned saw us and got very pale when he asked if she knew us. She was certain that we'd done something. Turns out that our names didn't make the list. After being identified he smiled and told us to enjoy graduation. Afterwards her instructor told us that our names didn't make the list, but she had submitted them.
suen1965 - welcome to life as a Navy mom. As JayDee659 shared, even when we try to make foolproof plans, something may go astray. It does sound like A school graduation will be before Power School from what I was told, so each graduation will be slightly different than the last.
With regards to flights, Nursemom, I would find out which airline is the most direct route from your departure to destination. We are more directionally in line with Delta's flights than Southwest, for sure and so that is what I have booked in the past. They do have changeable flight option tickets, you have to pay attention to them. I would suggest calling the airlines directly. I know in the past someone shared that they called American Airlines directly for their sailor's military ticket home. I did that with my son and the agent was very helpful. I don't know that we got much of a discount but it was at least recorded as a military ticket so if something changed with his orders, it was going to be easier to change. Granted, he had to have information from his commanding officer, but I felt much better being able to book his flight home so that he could fly with us and had a little bit of assurance that if plans changed at the last minute, we could deal with it. (Made this planning mom happy at least.)
Also, another side note: we did wait till almost the last minute to book the flights, for various reasons, one knowing hurricane season was upon us. But in the end, our tickets while more expensive, were still cheaper than if I had to change them, or paid for a complete refund. So, it just depends on how much risk you want to take.
Nursemom- My sailor just had A school graduation on the 12th and I'm so glad that I went! The only difference with my experience is that I flew United (and ended up having to beg for refunds) and that I had my sailors car and went from hotel to graduation alone. The guard just asked to see my drivers license and then checked to make sure I was on the list before waving me thru.
Oh... and the beds at the Hampton by Hilton were as hard as a rock... but right across the street from Starbucks.
JayDee659 The same thing happened at our A school graduation. We were told that is happens often. Names are turned in on time but the paper work gets lost. Thankfully our son rushed to the gate to meet us so we could get into the graduation on time.
We were also left off the list for A school graduation. Our sons instructor had surgery just before graduation and we theorize that our paperwork was not turned in because of this. My advice is to have your Sailor keep their phones on them as long as possible in case there is a problem. We were not allowed entry past the checkpoint after finding that our names were not on the list. My son finally went back to his room to check his phone after realizing we were not there and saw that we had been trying to call him from outside the gate. He was able to rush out and meet us and drive us in with no issues. If he had been able to take our call sooner I would not have gotten into such a panic! Lol
I also have not posted for a long time. My son was on deployment for 6 months so he was silent mostly. This deployment more silent than his last one. I did go to Hawaii to welcome him back. Funny thing is that the boat came in early. It arrived not long after I landed. As my plane approached, I looked out the window and spotted a sub in the ocean. It was his!! Got a picture of it from the air. He had hitched a ride with the boat that met them out to debrief, back to base a day early. He got to pick me up at the airport and we zoomed to base just in time to greet the sub. It was quite the day.
First congratulations to ALL of you with sailors graduating Power School or A School tomorrow. That is a very proud exciting time.
CO-TwinSalorsMom - that is so awesome. And great pictures.
And now I just have to share my exciting news. And I am attempting to be very cognizant of OPSEC - so please let me know if I share anything I shouldn't.
My son got his orders today - he didn't say if they are hard or soft orders and I am aware that even hard orders can be subject to change. But I am very excited about the way they stand now. He will be going to the Carl Vinson, CVN 70 in a few weeks. I couldn't be happier. And hopefully we will have him home for awhile in between.
COTwin, the photo of that sub coming in is like the awesomest thing I have ever seen, just knowing that's your boy in there! I remember seeing a photo of the Vinson strike group when my sailor was deployed and just cried, thinking of him in that huge vessel doing his job.
ProudOfK, that was my son's ship! He separated from the CVN70 in May. Just FYI, when you go and visit him in San Diego, let B'sNuke know. She and I met up a couple times when I went to see my son since she lives relatively close. Meeting other Navy moms is just the best and she is the best of the best.
BZ to everyone graduating today - enjoy your visit with your Sailor!

And your right B'sNukeMom is the best of the best - as she said we got to meet when she was here in WA earlier this year. And thank you Chipmunk and B'sNuke - now if we can just get through this last week or two of prototype. I'm pretty sure I'm way more stressed about it than my son is.

All went well today with my daughter's A school graduation. We were on the list, so no issues getting in. I'm so glad I came to see the ceremony, small, but very nice. Back to South Florida in the morning.
Had a proud Navy Nuke Mom morning at my son's graduation from power school. Been enjoying the day with him and have some more fun things planned around the area tomorrow. Then he comes HOME for the week!
Congratulations to all the sailors and mom's graduating! And so many proud moments!
Hello Ladies, my son will soon be going to A School and I have a question regarding what type of watches are they allow to wear. Are I-watches allowed?
COTwin: Epic sub photo! You have the luck! I thought we moms on the mainland would not get enough notice to greet our son's boats coming into Pearl, but I see that you (nearly) got there. You must have a good ombudsman. I am now hopeful.
A'smom - congratulations!! I didn't realize your son was graduating as well!!
It appears we had a large showing of N4M at the Power School graduation this time. It was held indoors and the class and officers were split between two graduations, so it was a full morning. So full that we missed getting into the Command Shop to buy any coins before they closed at noon!
suen 1965 - glad you got to A school graduation just fine, it was a busy morning for sure. Congratulations!
Navyma - I am not familiar with I-watches, hopefully someone else will respond. The watch does need to be all black - pretty much any outer apparel including umbrellas are all black. -
I just asked my son - smart watches of any sort are not allowed at the Rickover, only certain models that have no ability to receive or transmit information and those will need to be checked against a list that your son will be given.
As far as smart watches, they really cannot have anything at sea that senda out a signal as it may disclose the ships/subs location. The G-shock is a great watch and they can always wear it.
Sorry, hit enter too fast. In continuation ,a friends daughter experienced a situation on deployment where the enemy got missile lock on their ship. Turns out that somebody on board was snapchatting, thought it was not a big deal, turned out to be a very scary situation.
Is there a specific group for power school? My daughter starts in December and is due to graduate in June. I was hoping that there are groups setup for each class, as was the case for basic training. Also, is there any information on here about power school that I can read up on. I tried looking but had no luck. Actually, the amount of information on here is still a little overwhelming for me. Hopefully, I will learn my way around
suen1965 - There are not specific groups for each class. If you look at the pages on the right, there is one titled "Nuke School, part II (power school)". If you get a chance to read through things I think you will find the answers to most questions can be found in one of those pages. If not, feel free to ask.
suen1965 - 3B'smom pointed you in the right direction and really there isn't a lot about Power School, because as I like to joke, "they just power through" Instead of studying one subject at a time, maybe mathematics as well, in A school, they will study three subjects at a time. Mostly, it is class, study and what little free time they have. My son was able to do well enough on his PFA to be on voluntary PT, so he would wait and do his fitness practice on Saturday instead of having to do it during the weekday. Otherwise, not much difference between A school and Power School.
Congrats to the Boston RED SOX ~ 2018 World Series Champions! My youngest who is a Red Sox fan went to game 4 with his GF and had an awesome time! B and his GF are Dodger fans :( Hubby and I are Angel Fans so didn't really care either way who won lol!
We had a great time at the Navy/Notre Dame game on Saturday. Even though Navy lost (they did beat the point spread though!) it was still a lot of fun. From the flyover at the start of the game to the Navy Leapfrog team demonstration at half time it was awesome. If you have the opportunity to go to a Navy game definitely do it!

Hi all - Happy Monday!
