J's?S'smom, so glad to hear from you! You sure do have a lot of life going on right now. Congrats on the coming grandchild! Grandkids are the best thing ever!
NickSydmom, what a beautiful girl! And she's a United States sailor so she is obviously the whole package. Thanks for sharing.
B'sNuke, you OK in fire country? The news is terrifying. Stay safe, friend, and all you other moms in CA.
NancyJo - we are safe - the fires aren't close to where we are but man they are terrifying. So many homes lost and so many lives lost - this is devastating. Please pray for everyone in the fires path and also for the first responders. They need all the help they can get right now. We are expecting winds to pick up again in the next day or so and that is not good.
NickSydmom - beautiful picture of your daughter. She wears the uniform well ;-D I'll bet you are bursting with pride!
Havasu - I hope everything works out for your daughter with her desire to join the Navy.

Thank you ladies, I am very proud of my girl. Havasu I was in the same position as your husband. I wanted her go to college. She had scholarship offers. She would have had to play two sports for a full ride and she said it would be to hard to keep her grades up. She says now she definitely made the right choice going Navy. She tends to be social, I don’t know where she gets that from. She says the discipline will keep her focused. She has grown up so much, in a good way. I have totally come around. He will too.
NickSydmom - at the end of the day our kids need to do what makes them happy. It sounds like she made the right decision and I bet she will have great success! You have every right to be proud of her and her decision - and your sons too ;-D

Welcome aboard new members! We've been pretty quiet on here lately, which is unusual for this group. Yes, as B'sNuke has said, feel free to holler out any questions you have, and I'm sure you have plenty. Nothing is stupid or too small and you might as well tap into the collective knowledge here.
One week from yesterday I see my sailor! I get to spend Thanksgiving with him and his family. I am so excited I cannot tell you, but I know you all understand. Hooyah!
Meanwhile, the CA fires continue. B'sNuke and all you CA mamas, we are thinking of you and praying for you. Such loss! It sounds like some containment is happening. Prayers also for those brave souls who continue to fight the fires. Such good people.
NancyJo - I am so excited for you to spend Thanksgiving with your sailor! I know you are looking forward to seeing the littles too. Remind me - are you going to SC or are they coming home? Hubby and I were talking the other day and we realized this will be the 7th year in a row that we haven't been able to spend Thanksgiving with B. And since he's out now and in MI he's staying there for Thanksgiving - but they are coming home for Christmas so I'm not complaining! And the youngest is spending Thanksgiving with his GF and her family so it will just be hubby, me and my mom. I made reservations at Claim Jumper for Thanksgiving lol! We'll see how that is ;-D
B'sNuke, having them home for Christmas will be so great! It's really not that long to go at this point. How's Mom been doing in her new digs? Also, you get props from me for going out for dinner. That sounds like a winner to me. I'm going to SC btw.
I haven't been posting too much, life has just been busy. My sailor, J, has been doing great in A school! He's had a few interesting moments getting used to sharing rooms and bathrooms, and apparently now has some hang up with keeping everything spic and span. I only wish he'd been as concerned about cleaning his own bathroom here as he is there! LOL! He wanted to come home for Thanksgiving, but we encouraged him to stay there. Our house is about three hours from the airport, which means a day lost to travel for all of us, one day at home, and then traveling back to get him to the airport in time to get back to base. Plus, holiday travel is so iffy. I felt like a bad mom suggesting this, but I truly felt it was in his best interest to stay there and just skype with us.
He does get quite a bit of time for Christmas, but it's his dad's year this year. My son was planning on flying to his dad's for 5 days, flying to us for a couple days, and then flying back to GC. We helped him come up with an itinerary and priced tickets and it was going to be an extraordinary amount. We encouraged him to just get a round trip ticket to his dad's and spend his Holiday leave/stand down time with his dad and bonus mom. He graduates A School only 10 days after his leave is over, so we told him we would fly to him for the graduation instead. He was really insistent that he come to visit us halfway through his leave and said it felt wrong to only see one set of parents and not the other. We told him that we wanted less stress for him, less money spent, and that seeing him and spending the whole weekend with him over his graduation would mean everything to us. We finally convinced him it was a good plan, so now we are super excited to get to SC for his graduation!
We are used to trading off holidays with his dad, so since all of the kids will be at his dad's house, and his sister that he is best friends with will be there, he will have a lot of fun hanging out there for the Christmas holiday. I'm always a little sad in those quiet moments on the holidays I don't have the kids, but I never tell them so they don't feel bad. And I know they're having fun, so that's all that matters. Plus, I get to finally get to SC and see him in January! We weren't planning on going to the graduation, but now I can't wait!! Yay!!!!
NancyJo - yes, I am excited for Christmas as B wasn't home last year - and both boys and their GF's will be here. (youngest and his GF leave on 12/26 for Austria for a week). And I'm actually looking forward to Thanksgiving meal out. I'm hoping it's stress free since there will only be 3 of us. Mom is doing well in her new place (I mean it's always something, but for the most part all is well lol!). I'll bet SC at Christmas will be beautiful too!
Havasu - it sounds like you have adjusted to the trading off holiday schedule so this will work well with the military schedule! Glad you have a good attitude about the whole thing. And you will definitely enjoy SC - so win/win!
One thing you all will learn (or have learned) is that with the military life holidays are celebrated when you are together. It might not be on the actual day, but that is ok. It's the family time together that counts.
Havasu--You're a model of letting your kids be their own people and not intruding your own needs into their lives, esp at holidays. We're still adjusting to Daughter in the Navy and son and his wife recently moved to the Midwest (we're in NY area). It often seems to me that everyone I know is within 30 minutes of their kids--and complaining about how long it takes to get there for visits! ;)) We'll have both kids home for T-giving this year, but as you note, Nancy Jo--it may be turkey on Friday, or even Saturday, schedules permitting. Thanks ladies for being good, non-whining role models
It's tough when Mom and Dad live separately. When our kids are far away we want every second of their time when they are on leave and it just doesn't work that way. The healthy thing is to let our sailors know that we will take whatever they can give us but give them the freedom to figure it out for themselves. That's so hard! I can't say I have always been 100% successful but my Sea Sisters inspire me.
My sailor's fiance will be graduating boot camp this Friday! He plans to fly there and be with her parents. I can't wait to see them together (in pictures) in their Navy dress blues! I wish i could go I have missed her and I know my son misses her. They have been very supportive of each other. (Though he did offer her his GI bill if she did not enlist). I know they plan to get married but I am not sure how that will work with both in the navy? He will be done with prototype in Feb and she will also be done with training around that time.
Having to share time with the kids' dad definitely prepared all of us for my son's transition to military life. My ex's career also calls for having holidays on whatever day he has off, so the kids have learned to be flexible and understand that the holiday is the day family is together. I suppose some good things come from difficult times, so I'm appreciative for some earlier life training in this regard.
Hi, not been on here in a while. My Sister and her daughter and family live in Chico, right by Paradise. She used to live there. Has many friends there that lost everything. She had evac orders but did not have to yet. The death toll is unreal. The fire moved so fast that people were literally running for their lives. Such a tragedy. My sister said that it has not rained there since May.
On Sailor news, My nuke sailor will be out of the navy next spring. He plans to go to college and has applied to two close to me. He requested if he could move home for a couple of months till he figures out living arrangements wherever he decides to go to school.
I will have both my guys home for Christmas again this year.
My sailor is in T-track right now and will class up for Power School after the holidays. This is the first year that he will not be at Thanksgiving or Christmas. The good news is that he is coming home on the 27th... so we will be post-poning our celebration until then.
Sheesh... the Navy is forcing this Mom to grow up!
COTwin, so nice to hear from you! It's been ages! How great to have both your boys for Christmas. I can't believe how close you are to ending the navy journey altogether. It's been quite the ride, hasn't it?
workingatit, there are several moms here who have sailors married to sailors. Perhaps they can give you some concrete info. JayDee comes to mind right away. I was surprised when my sailor said his GI Bill or 9/11 bill or whatever they are calling it could be shared with his wife or kids. Another awesome benefit of the navy.
True about the holiday being when the family is together. I remember back a while a mom kept her tree up into February or March so that they had Christmas when their sailor came home. Whatever works! Navy moms learn to go with the flow.
CoTwin - yes, good to hear from you. Nice that you will have the twins home for Christmas - enjoy! Can't wait to see pictures ;-D
workingatit - I hope you'll share a picture when you get it. I think the Navy does try to keep them on the same coast but I don't think they can be on the same ship. As long as they know there could be times of (long) separation that's the important thing.
The Hammer - you will have a very Merry Christmas on the 27th!
Freebird - are you on the nuke moms secret FB page? There are a couple moms there that make deliveries to the base and you might have better luck finding something. Also, I know that often they can find another sailor that is opening up their home and they could join them. Many parents visit at the holidays and stay in the Villas and welcome sailors that have no where to go.....worth looking in to.
Here's something else I saw on FB - "Heroes Pay Zero". It's help for homebuying. I don't have any firsthand knowledge of it but it might be something worth passing on to your sailors:
Thanks, B'sNuke, love that Heroes Pay Zero info. I know my daughter and ex-nuke SIL use veteran benefits quite a bit and recently bought a home using VA. They even got veteran benefits at Lowe's buying house stuff before they moved in. I like to hear when our veterans are honored in whatever way.
California has fire and we have ice. Freezing rain started coming down last night around 6. By 2:00 am we'd lost our power and I could hear trees coming down all around. Listening to the branches hitting our roof was a bit disconcerting. My nuke's dog went and hid in the bathroom and is still there. When I looked on line our electric service provider said that they had 9900 outages and 9600 were still out - ouch that includes me.
My nuke is driving home today after she finishes her shift. Last night I made the lasagna she requested and am now hoping that it doesn't go bad in the fridge. Hopefully she has a safe drive in and that the power is back on when she gets here.
JayDee that stinks - hopefully your power comes back on soon! I'm in Cinci this week for work and so far we dodged the bullet here....mostly rain so far. Heading back home tomorrow, keeping my fingers crossed the airports are back on schedule.
Feeling bad for my son today, he failed his first test this week with just under a 2.5....he's been consistently upper 3's until now so I'm not sure what happened. He sounded pretty down about it. He didn't really say, what happens when they fail a test? Do they retake it? PS grad coming up in December, don't want to see him get bogged down by this one setback :(
JayDee, terrible! It's early for an ice storm. Prayers for your nukette.
bigsky21, one failed test after many successes won't be the end and the navy wants him to succeed. What you can do is encourage your sailor and see what happens. They provide help for sailors who have struggles and this might not even be the case for him. This may be one lesson he didn't grasp and will figure out. Let's wait and see.
Yikes JayDee - just make sure you don't open the fridge at all and everything should be good for a while. Of course it's going to be hard to cook the lasagna for her with no power! It must be freezing in your house!!!! OMG Wishing her safe travels too ;-D
bigsky21 - like NancyJo said one failed test isn't going to ruin him. He might get some extra study hours....continue to encourage him and let him know it isn't the end of the world!
NancyJo - it's amazing how many places offer military/veterans discounts. They just have to remember to ask!
Jana sent a message to "all" nuke mom members. I went ahead and asked her to post her questions here - hopefully she does. While you can send a message to "all" members it only goes to your email account - it doesn't show up in your inbox here on N4M. Better to post your questions on the comment wall so everyone has the opportunity to respond. (Unless it's private and then just send the individual a PM.)
bigsky21, IIRC they need a certain number of points to graduate, and the "2.5 stay alive" is an average. Tests are mainly used to track progress and identify areas where they need further study. Worst case they'll just up his study hours.
Hi All!! Reading but commenting little, as I play catch up on many other household needs from my hiatus.
Prayers for those in CA and now ice as well it sounds like.
Just a comment on holidays - ours was Halloween!! And we still were missing our eldest and her husband.
BigSky21- and my other Mom friends in PS, just keep encouraging and praying for your Nukes. Thinking about you and your sailors. Certain tests are also more a priority for getting the pass than others, and there are some tough ones with lots of points, at least from what I recall with my ET. One my son wasn't even able to finish because it was so long. They just keep pressing forward.
B'sNukeMom- thanks for the links. I will share with my son, it helps to remind them of other perks they do receive. Especially when goof ups occur and records are lost and a PFA has to be redone. Thoughts for my son today!
B'sNukeMoM - you are so right about spending time with your sailor. We take every minute we can get - even if it means pizza in lieu of a holiday dinner.
NancyJo - I am right there with you on the count down! I am so excited to hug my sailor and meet his GF. I am also looking forward to the much warmer temps (if only for a few days)!
JayDee - hoping you get power back quickly. We have had snow off and on all day today. I hope you have a fantastic visit with your sailor and stay warm!!!
Co-Twin - I am going to send you a PM. I live in Chico too! We have been having heavy smoke, and a small part of the city was evacuated Thursday night. Everybody I personally know that lived in Paradise is safe, but everybody I know in general knows several people who have lost their homes. The devastation is just astounding, but there are some really uplifting stories coming out too. Prayers for everybody, victims and heroes. My Nuke will not be home for Thanksgiving, but we recently saw him for the weekend in San Diego at the Notre Dame/Navy game (didn't realize until later that B'sNuke was there too), and he said he's pretty sure he will be home for Christmas. We've been pretty lucky - this will be his 6th Christmas since joining, but he has only missed 2 with us.
I also deal with splitting time when my kids come home. One seems to come here and take advantage to get me to drive him 6 hours to his dad's for the holidays. Last time his gift from me was a bus ticket. He lives in Alaska now that he is out of the navy so I don't get to see him a lot.
His twin is at Pearl Harbour and tends to hang here more.
submomIII - glad to hear you are safe from the fires - one of my coworkers is taking a trailer load of supplies up to Paradise. His daughter goes to college here in Riverside with a girl that her family (both sets of grandparents, her parents and some aunts & uncles) all lost their homes. And they lost their family business too -basically they lost everything. But thankfully they are alive. The death toll has risen to over 60 and now they say there are more than 600 still unaccounted for. Unbelievable and so sad.
I'm sorry that we missed each other at the Navy/Notre Dame game too! Would have been fun to see you again. We'll have to catch up in Vegas again ;-D We need to get a big group of us and head to Vegas lol!
Yes JayDee - check in please - did your nukette arrive yet? Power back on? I sure hope you can cook that lasagna for her!
B'sNukeMom, my nuke arrived just before midnight. The power came on 15 minutes later...then off again in 15 minutes. Most of the neighborhood is up, there are 12 of us who are still without. Our electric provider informed me that they would do me a "favor" and add me to the outage list when I called to confirm that we still showed as "out". My neighbors who are out have called in as well, hopefully they'll get to us soon.
Typically how much time do sailors have off between PS and Prototype? Also any suggestions on housing for sailors going to NY? Should they use the NPTU Ballston Spa website?
ProudParent - When B finished PS he had about 3 weeks before he had to report to NY for prototype - and then it was another 3 months before proto actually started. I don't think there is a set time - hopefully someone who has had their sailor finish PS more recently can chime in.
B lived in The Winners Circle - great apartments. He had a 3 bedroom - with 2 roommates. We visited twice and I have nothing but good things to say about the complex.
Ok B'sNukeMom - I have to say it - every time you post this picture all I can think of is Pepto-Bismol - LOL. Maybe I had a little too much of it when I was a kid.

Sheesh... the Navy is forcing this Mom to grow up!

Hi all - Happy Thursday!

Thanks NancyJo and B'sNukeMom, I know he can do this, it just hurts my heart to hear him sound so down.

JayDee! Power back?
Hate hearing about the fire devastation. Terrifying and heartbreaking. Prayers it ends soon.
CoTwin, love the bus ticket. Haha
Everybody have their red on? Hooyah!

submomIII - glad to hear you are safe from the fires - one of my coworkers is taking a trailer load of supplies up to Paradise.
Nov 16, 2018
JayDee659
B'sNukeMom, my nuke arrived just before midnight. The power came on 15 minutes later...then off again in 15 minutes. Most of the neighborhood is up, there are 12 of us who are still without. Our electric provider informed me that they would do me a "favor" and add me to the outage list when I called to confirm that we still showed as "out". My neighbors who are out have called in as well, hopefully they'll get to us soon.

Typically how much time do sailors have off between PS and Prototype? Also any suggestions on housing for sailors going to NY? Should they use the NPTU Ballston Spa website?
Nov 16, 2018
B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)
ProudParent - When B finished PS he had about 3 weeks before he had to report to NY for prototype - and then it was another 3 months before proto actually started. I don't think there is a set time - hopefully someone who has had their sailor finish PS more recently can chime in.
B lived in The Winners Circle - great apartments. He had a 3 bedroom - with 2 roommates. We visited twice and I have nothing but good things to say about the complex.

Also, be sure to join the Ballston Spa group. It's not real active but you can find some good info in the discussion forum.
