Got my first letter from my kid in BC. Doing good but grad may be pushed due to busted eardrum. No call on date change yet so guess nothing changed yet. Is A school any easier for communication?
ARenee, sorry to hear about your son's eardrum. Yes, communication is easier in A school however, not all sailor's will communicate with their parents as much or as extensively as may be wanted.
Chipmunk my kid did two years away at college before deciding to join the navy. The only communication I got then was when I left a message to call me or I would come for a visit. So I already know that communication is not his strongest point. But knowing that I can talk to him at some point, will be better then knowing I cant talk to him at all.
julesmtu my son is in division 67. He will probably be sent back due to his ear. He was not able to do his swim test. But I haven't been able to talk to him yet. No phone call. What division is your son in?
ARenee - sorry to hear about your sons ear - that sounds painful. He might get sent to the FIT division while they wait for his ear to heal. Hopefully you'll hear something from him soon. And yes, you will be able to have more contact with him once he gets to A school - he will be very busy with school though so you might have to be satisfied with short texts lol! We were lucky that B would call us every Sunday through A school and Power School. Prototype gets a little trickier because their schedules rotate.....
ARenee, don't worry about being put back. His ear will heal and he can then move forward. These things happen. Also, my son is a terrible communicator. His wife is an angel so that's where I get info. <sigh>
I'm wearing my red, looking forward to the game tomorrow and remembering all those who fought and died in Pearl Harbor. Sadly the "day that will live in infamy" is being quickly forgotten.
'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.' (George Santayana-1905)
Yes, with the passing of Pres. Bush another of the Greatest Generation has left us. Those are big footprints for our sailors to walk in. I pray that kind of courage and dedication is present today but will not be needed.
Yesterday I posted a link on the Bush page on here - the sailors did a cool flashlight vigil on the flight deck and there's a video of it. If you have a minute take a look at it. Very nice gesture they did ;-D
Mammagoose - there you go - rocking your RED!
julesmtu - You don't need to say much in the letter - he'll be happy just to get mail! If nothing else send him a funny joke. One of the letters I sent when B was in BC was a questionnaire that I found on here. It was fun to see his answers. I still remember one of the funniest was "What's one thing you can't wait to do when you finish BC?" and his response was "To pee standing up!" OMG we all laughed so hard. Apparently some of the guys couldn't manage to hit the toilet so as punishment they ALL had to pee sitting down. And even worse someone had to stand watch in the bathroom to make sure they didn't use urinals and went and sat down . Gotta love the Navy!
julesmtu - B was also in a 900 division. He was a "body snatcher" (catch anyone who might pass out during PIR). They usually work/perform at 2 other PIR's besides their own. And when we walked in the door to PIR he was handing out programs - I wasn't expecting this and when I saw him I literally burst out crying I was so surprised! Do you know yet what your son will be doing?
Just caught up on all the conversation from the week. I am needing to get TSO and Mannheim Steamroller out and play them - we have seen both live and they are incredible! I want to see Lindsey Sterling and The Piano Guys - will have to start checking local events :) I have to say the picture of Sully lying by the casket made me choke up. A dogs loyalty to their owner is so amazing to me. I have to conferee that I laughed at the comment about cooking as I can so relate! I am not a baker or a cook - extremely average food is what I serve best but I do it with love :)
On another note, our sailor is currently in PS. I know they have to move off base after graduation but was wondering if they has another "T-Track" of sorts before Prototype. Just trying to get a timeline for the next few months.
My child finally found something he didn't like in the galley! He said the mexican food they served yesterday was horrific! I know its bad and i shouldn't laugh but LOL! Guess my Carne Asada tacos are going to be had when he comes home :-) HA!

One happy mama, papa, and big sister early this morning thanks to a surprise 2:30 AM call from our deployed sailor! It’s been more than 2 months so this was a very welcomed call. So good to hear his voice and to have four of us “together.”
Tulip - we rejoice with you!! What a wonderful early Christmas present. Another reminder, to keep our phones close by.
To all of my Dec PS Nuke Mom Friends, my thoughts and prayers for you & your sailors as they are finishing up on their last test and preparing for comps!! All the best to everyone. Enjoy the extra time for Christmas if you are able.
Well I found out last week that not every government employee had the same day off for the official day of mourning, so I am having to make some concessions at home and allow my sons to Skype with each other - it is a blessing when we can be flexible in our schedule to accommodate our sailor's schedule.
Tulip...that is so awesome. What a wonderful surprise. Brought tears to my eyes because I know ill.be there soon. Also a reminder to keep.my phone by me at all times!

Well that's 3 straight years now that Army has beaten Navy :( The Midshipman tried to make a game of it in the 4th quarter but it just wasn't quite enough. I still love seeing all these young men out there giving it their all. We gotta get them next year!
Julesmtu - I would suggest you watch the video from one of the previous PIR's so that you can have a feel for where the band will be sitting and also to just see how the ceremony will go to better prepare you for your PIR.
Our sailor sent a text to my hubby early this morning and mentioned that he might earn both his “fish and shellback” while on this deployment. I am familiar with “fish”—same as dolphins, right?—but not “shellback.” Anyone know that designation? What’s “Golden dragon”? Thanks, Sea Sisters and friends!
Shellback is when they cross the equator for the first time. I think golden dragon has to do with crossing the international date line, but I’m not sure.
3B'smom is right, Shellback is crossing the equator for the first time and golden dragon is crossing the international dateline for the first time. My SIL earned a rare Golden Shellback by crossing the equator at the dateline back about 15 years ago. There's a ceremony when sailors cross for the first time and it used to be pretty harsh. These days it's just silly. Does anybody remember what that ceremony is called? They do a bunch of gross stuff. Anyway, Tulip, deployments aren't fun but the sailors do try to do stuff that liven things up.
NancyJo - It's "Pollywog to Shellback". Here's a couple different articles I found about it - and yes, they have done away with the "hazing" aspect of it and now it is more of a "fun" (but a little gross) event.
julesmtu - That's pretty cool that your son is playing in the band! Definitely watch another PIR like Chipmunk suggested so you can get a feel of where he'll be.

JadaK18, I saw your question about going to A school with your son? Do you mean flying from Chicago to Charleston with him? I'm not sure if it's changed, but my husband was on the same flight as our daughter out of Midway and she had to sit with her fellow sailors. If I misunderstood your question, please let me know, I'm a little thick today.
Ladies, I got an early Christmas gift of the Type A Flu. Despite the flu shot. Apparently I'm the first case that my doctors office has seen this year. Doctor had diagnosed me with bronchitis and at the last minute decided to do the flu test and viola! Unfortunately my end of year vacation from work is supposed to start next Wednesday, not sure how this will play out with my boss, but I'm sure we'll work it out.
