Good morning, Sea Sisters! Got your red on? I do!

CSW, wow! How do you track a plane?

  • CSW

    NancyJo,

you need to know the flight number and then there is an site called flightware and you can track it that way. You can add layers to the map to see weather, darkness, other planes, airports. Its really neat. You can also sign up to receive email alerts when the plan lands, etc.

I tried to find a live camera at the airport to watch the plane arrival as well but wasn't so successful there.

  • CSW

Oh yea, I was gonna add, I wish I realized that the airlines no longer greet arrivals with a lei and I would have scheduled my sailor to receive a lei. So next time he goes back I'll get that done.  It cost $29 for a single, but it would be a good experience.  I still thought that they did that automatically but lesson learned, too late. Also lesson learned yesterday, get power of attorney for your sailor when they go OCONUS (outside continental US) so you can help with paperwork snafus.  I tried yesterday to help with a shipping snafu on his vehicle and wasn't authorized. Hopefully we'll get that figured out today so I can try to do some trouble shooting on that for him.

  • Chipmunk

NancyJo and B'sNukeMom - I have been tracking airplane flights for almost 20 years since my husband was traveling a lot when our children were younger. He showed me how. I didn't use the site that CSW gave but that one sounds neat. I will have to bookmark it. Lately, with Delta, you can track their flights from their website. In fact, our last trip, on one of our legs we had mini computers at our seats and we tracked our own flight in flight!! It was neat.

CSW thanks for the reminder for POA.

We've had ice and then snow here so I am lounging in my fusia pj's not quite red. Asked hubby to make his own breakfast since work wasn't starting till noon, and I am working on my computer in the sunshine through the bay window.

  • WearsLargeHats

Flightaware or Flightradar24 for tracking planes. Flightradar is more detailed and technical, Flightaware can send you notifications for a particular flight.

Hi all - Happy Friday!  I've got my RED on too (although it's buried under a few layers right now lol!).

CSW - the POA is a good idea to have regardless of where they are (especially if they are single).  You never know what might come up!  Is the flightware a web site or an app?  I'd like to do an app on my phone....guess I could search the app store and see what pops up!

I have used Flightaware for about 10 years and it's super helpful.  I also like Seat Guru.  They basically tell you the scoop on each seat and where the best seating is.  Also little tidbits like which seats have usb outlets and so forth.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

    Thanks, Everybody! Great information!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Ok - sorry but I just had to post this ;-D

BsNukeMom, that's a picture to start off the weekend.  Happy Friday!

  • SubMom

B'sNukeMoM - I just LOL at the sub picture. Thank you for the giggle.

  • SubMom

Our sailor will be heading to Prototype in a few months. Have any of your sailors rented furnished apartments in GC?

  • Chipmunk

Submom - I don't know about furnished apartments, but there are thrift stores nearby. The one that we stopped at on Red Banks road even had a directory of the thrift stores in the area.

  • Buzzbeck

A belated Happy New Year to all the Nuke Moms! I have been following along with interest. Our sailor in Pearl Harbor earned his Dolphins this fall, no small feat. We got to see him recently. We probably will not see him as much in the future. My daughter gave me "Be Safe, Love Mom" for Christmas. Definitely a good book!

  • ProudOfK

Buzzbeck - congratulations to your sailor! That's awesome!

    Hi all - Happy Tuesday!

Buzzbeck - BZ to your sailor on earning his Dolphins!  "Be Safe, Love Mom" is a great book - keep the tissues handy!

SubMom - It will also probably be cheaper to find an unfurnished apartment and furnish it with thrift store finds.  Is he looking to have roommates?

  • SubMom

B'sNukeM0m and Chipmunk - I'm trying to figure out both options. Not sure if it is a wash to go with furnished or not. He wants to have a roommate only if they are under age (as he is) so he does not run the risk of getting into trouble by association if the roommate gets into trouble. Not to say under age drinking doesn't happen but if he can eliminate that it will put his mind at ease :)

  • bigsky21

SubMom, another option is to go with base housing....my son and his two roommates ran out of time looking for a house/apt and had to "settle" for a house on base this past December, but it sounds like a pretty good deal to me. When they signed the lease they had the option of picking from various packages, from unfurnished to completely furnished down to bed linens and kitchenware. They opted for fully furnished and the package was delivered and set up for them. They did end up unpacking some of the stuff themselves, but they didn't have to, they just didn't want to wait on the moving guys. So they have a plain, but decent little ranch house fully furnished close to everything they need, and I think son said rent ended up being 7 hundred something per guy, which includes the furniture package and utilities. Oh and they have their own washer/dryer too. If you read the reviews, there are complaints about the management company not being responsive, but time will tell....

  • WonderGeekWoman

B'sNuke - I'm fairly certain that it is second Monday.

Buzzbeck - BZ to your nuke!

  • Rebecca J

Buzzbeck ....congratulations on your son earning his dolphins. Such great news!

  • Havasu

Congrats to your sailor, Buzzbeck! What an accomplishment!

  • Havasu

I am super excited because one week from today I get to wrap my arms around my sailor! He is graduating from A School and I'm super excited for him. He hasn't been able to find out the graduation time yet, does anyone here remember around what time the A School graduation typically is? I was thinking around 0900?

  • CSW

    Havasu,

Yes 0900, unless there is a Power School graduation and then they may move it earlier. Ours was at 0700 so we were out before the Power School graduation crowd got there.

  • Havasu

    Thanks for the info, CSW!

  • JayDee659

    BZ Buzzbeck!!

  • The Hammer

Congratulatios Havasu to you and your sailor!!! My kid just classed up for Power School and text me today to let me know that he was selected as ASL... he is super pumped! Oh... and had my first colonoscopy today... all clear! What a day!

  • SubMom

Buzz beck - BZ to your sailor. What awesome news!!

  • Chipmunk

Congratulations to your sailors - Buzzbeck and Havasu!!

  • NNLori

Hey everyone!! Feels like for ever since I've chimed in but I do read most posts on my phone but just don't often get to my computer to comment.

Congratulations Buzzbeck on your sailors dolphins!! Exciting!

My son started Prototype on Monday. It's definitely an adjustment. He is loving having his own room in his first apartment. My son and two friends rented an unfurnished apartment in Ladson (part of North Charleston). It's a gated complex. Very nice. It was $1,500.00 a month so about $500.00 each. My son opted for the smallest room so he will pay a little less than the other two. The guy with the master bedroom and bath will pay the most. Makes sense to me. He opted to just get an air mattress for now and will look into getting an actual bed as time allows. The schedule is pretty rough so far. He told me he gets up around. 5 am. Leaves the house at 5:30. Has to park and pick up a shuttle to where they have to go and then sits in a room with no windows for 12 hours. They have to pack their lunch, I'm guessing they can't leave. He has gotten home after 7pm so for the last two days. I think this new schedule will take some getting used to. I guess they are getting them used to a ship schedule. Just another hoop to jump through I guess!! The challenges never end. LOl!!

Congratulations to all who have graduated recently!!

Just wanted to say hello to everyone while I had a few minutes. The holidays were crazy for me this year. My son graduated Power School on December 21st which made the holiday season that much crazier. We did drive down to attend the graduation. It's my goal to make it to all three. I understand that Prototype graduations sometimes don't happen so I guess we will see what happens.  It was great having him home until January 4th!! Now that life has calmed down a little I'm hoping to check in a little more often now!! :))

  • ProudOfK

NNLori nice to hear from you. I will just tell you that from my sons experience that as crazy as things are now in prototype it is the calm before the storm. The real craziness starts when they go On Crew. But never fear - he's got this.
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Wednesday!

    BZ to your Sailor Havasu!

NNLori - yes, proto gets a little crazy but he'll get it figured out.  And then just about the time he does it will change lol!

  • Havasu

Thanks, B'sNukeMoM, Chipmunk, and The Hammer! Good to hear from you NNLori!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

I want to wish a Happy Birthday to SubMom today!  Hope you have a wonderful day ;-D

B'sNukeMom Very cute! And very much how I feel especially knowing my nuke is coming home tomorrow for the weekend. I don't remember how much I've said on here but he actually was sent straight to the Bremerton, WA area. I am counting my blessings everyday that we have him so close to home. And I plan to enjoy it while he is there as I know the time will come that it will change.
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

ProudOfK - you are very lucky indeed!  Enjoy ;-D  Remind me, is he sub or carrier?

  • ProudOfK

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Don't forget to wear your RED tomorrow!

  • Tulip

ProudOfK, I will send you a PM. My sailor is based in Bremerton.
  • Chipmunk

The Hammer - I realized I forgot to say congratulations to your son as well!!

ProudofK - did your son not have the normal "30 " days off after Prototype?

I am trying to anticipate what my son's time after Proto will look like.

Been a long day - drove (or hubby drove) out of state to a family funeral, had tire issues on the way up but made it in time for the service and then spend the afternoon with extended family.

NNLori - I received your msg, no need to apologize - I will try to reply soon. Goodnight!

  • ProudOfK

Tulip - I will be looking for it - looked tonight but did not see anything so if you sent something already it did not come through.  Look forward to hearing from you.

  • KayCee

Good morning All and Happy RED Friday!

Saying hello and Congrats to all the accomplishments recently and to graduating sailors today - and their families :)

I finally heard from my son last night that started Prototype on Monday (same time as NNLori's son).  He said it is LONG days, 12 hours - not including drive time.  He hasn't seen the sun all week, and as NNLori's son said - no windows.  He also got a really nice, unfurnished apartment with roommates in Ladson.  I was able to see it when I went back for PS graduation and was very impressed.  So much room and they do have a washer and dryer in their apartment which will be nice for them.  He has had a couple challenges with roommates.  Yesterday one of them set off the fire detectors at 0430 after burning his breakfast.  Another time the same roommate exploded the microwave after reheating food and not venting the lid.  He apparently doesn't have strong domestic skills.  Haha!

Enjoy your day and your weekend!!  Btw, ProudofK and Tulip - if you ever get over to Bremerton to visit, let me know.  I'm not too far away :)

  • Chipmunk

    Got my RED on today!!

KayCee - I had to chuckle - they are finally learning all aspects of being a bachelor!! Yes, the days are long!

  • ProudOfK

KayCee - that's right you're not too far from there. I will definitely be getting touch with you at some point as id love to meet up with you and we will for sure be going overe there since it is now just a modest road trip.
And yes the days in prototype are very long. We did not hear very often from our son during prototype because he barely had time to eat and sleep.
