Restaurant deals in Charleston, SC - Another Navy mom whose son is a doctor at NNPTC shared this with me. - Thru Jan. 20th it is Restaurant Week in Charleston. The restaurants have super special meal deals - including the high end restaurants. Her son said the dinner they had was a real treat in terms of the ordered food and the significantly lesser tab for the night.
Hello. My son graduated BC Friday and arrived in GC on Sat. He is getting settled in his new room and such. Any advice for moms on the first couple of weeks there?
Hi mamaquilt68! BZ to your son on completing boot camp and arriving in GC. Now the fun begins lol! Best thing for you right now is enjoy the communication with him and start reading up on the pages posted to the right - under the member profiles and take a look at Chipmunks discussion on A school (I'll bump it up above). This will give you an idea of what your son will be going through and when. Just take it one day at a time. Once your son starts classes he'll be real busy but he should still have some time on the weekends to talk/text with you (I guess it depends on how communicative he is). Our son would call us every Sunday to chat all through A school and Power school. Sure the program is difficult but I think what's hardest for most is the speed that they move through things - that's a big adjustment for most but they can do it! Hang in there - your job is to be your sons biggest supporter/cheerleader. We will be here to support you - it's a roller coaster ride for sure! Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
Mamaquilt68 welcome! The pages B'sNukeMom bumped up will be great reading with lots of insight. My daughter always suggests enjoying the down time, don't worry about getting classed up, it will happen. Also don't accumulate too much "stuff" in his room during A & Power schools, it just has to be moved for Prototype. So in other words, plan ahead.
B'sNukeMom - thanks for bumping the discussion for me! We must have seen mamaquilt68's request about the same time.
Mamaquilt68 - Welcome aboard!! I wrote the above discussion on A school with my son's help in Sept/Oct 2017. He is now in Prototype and even busier, but communicates as much as he is able with their schedule. If you have more specific questions don't hesitate to ask, but B'sNukeMom covered a lot. Some of the BC graduates will "class up" immediately when they get to GC, and others will be INDOC for a few weeks. But they will still be given jobs to do, however, they might have more flexibility to talk. I highly recommend that if he is INDOC that you encourage him to get his qualifications for standing watch done before he classes up. It should be explained in the various posts in my discussion above.
mamaquilt68, You are in the right place! The moms here run the gamut as far as where their sailors are in the pipeline. What has been said is spot on so rather than that drop some more helpful tidbits your way I will say stick around and whenever anything pops up that you don't understand (that happens a lot!) ask away. There is nothing too small and we are all here to help each other.
The best moments are when we say something to our sailors and they are amazed we know about it. I always say thank you, Navy4Moms!
Does anyone out there have experience with the Army? My nephew just signed and gets sworn in tomorrow but isn't supposed to report until February? Does that sound right
Kbpoohbear, I can't speak about the army but my sailor had 9 months between signing and going to BC. It's all about the number of people heading for whatever rate and having enough of them. I wouldn't be surprised that the army is similar to the navy in that regard. But maybe somebody here has real knowledge about the army.
Kbpoohbear - sorry, no experience with the army but ours was the same situation as NancyJo - 9 months between signing his contract and leaving for BC.
B&C settled on a venue for the wedding so things are moving along! They did move the date to 7.19.2020 so they'll be out of school (and less stressed). Seems so far away now but I know the time will go by fast ;-D
Thank you for all the comments and advice. He has been communicating the last couple of days-especially so I can send his XBox! Lol. Don't know how much time he'll have to use it, but he has friends online that I know he wants to communicate with.
He has already been "classed up" and has a lot of briefings, computer labs and such this week. He sounds quite busy already.
Thanks for the advice about not accumulating too much stuff. I was thinking about that when I was packing the boxes this morning!
I know my son had 2 swearing ins but we were only allowed to be at the last one. He left right after. So far my nephew's experience has been the same as my son but my sister is at today's swearing in and he doesn't leave for a month. We will see.
On another note my son wants some stuff sent to him and he said when he starts power school the t track in the address changes to ENPS 1902 or something like it. I know other mothers have sons that just started power school, can you help with this?
The first swearing in is usually when they enter the DEP program. The final swearing in is when they leave for BC. We didn't go to the first swearing in either. The final one we went to. We were able to go the night before and stayed in the hotel where the Deppers stayed - took B out to dinner and then went to the swearing in in the morning. Even followed along to the airport to say one last goodbye lol. I wonder if he'll have another final swearing in when he leaves in February?
I don't remember how the address changes when they get to power school - hopefully someone else will chime in with that!
NancyJo - yes, the venue has a cute little chapel and a beautiful reception area (The Chapel of Orange if you want to look it up). The Chapel was built in 1909 - it used to be the Chapman Chapel (my college alma mater) and now it's a wedding venue and they still do church services on Sundays.
He better get me the real address if he wants the stuff. What is with these kids. You ask a direct question and get a round answer. I know they are adults but... he is my baby.
Swearing in was the same for us. I wasn't at the first but was at the one just before leaving for BC. Very tough for me, and I think for him too. We left the house and went to the swearing in, then he got on the bus for the airport. His dad and I were divorced by that time and as usual Dad didn't show up. He was my last kiddo so I felt very alone (no N4M yet for me), especially as I watched his teenage self-conscious shuffle to the bus. Kind of chokes me up to remember it, even all these years later.
Meanwhile, I'm in on a secret...sailor and wife expecting #4! Big surprise for them but that's the way all the best blessings are. They won't tell the rest of the family til after the first dr. appt. I was lucky enough to call shortly after they found out. Woot Woot!
Kbpoohbear - when it comes to the address, don't be too hard on your son. Depending on who is telling them the information it may or may not be the same as what we have been use to in the past. And they may have changed it since some of our kids were in Power School as well. My son's was like ProudOfK but it could have changed.
Congrats to all that shared wonderful news today, graduations, new baby blessings, and wedding plans!!
Kbpoohbear I sent all important letters/packages for my son to a lady nearby in Summerville who delivers them to the base and sends you a pic of your sailor with the package - that way we didn't have to worry about mail room delays....pm me if you want her info....
So today I am wearing a tank top, long sleeve shirt and sweatshirt as the weather here in MI is a bit on the chilly side :) Unfortunately none of them have RED in them but I do have on my anchor earrings and sailor heart necklace. Hope everyone has a nice weekend and stays warm!!
SubMom- we have chilly weather here, but inside it is warm, so I have two different shirts that I switch in and out of depending on if I am inside all day or out and about.! I think anchor earrings and sailor heart necklace sound just right!!
