MoMom our son qualified at about 1:00 am the morning of prototype graduation. He chose not to go to the ceremony - partly he hadn't been to any of the practices because he was working to get his last signatures and studying for his oral boards. We weren't able to be there either but for a bit I was a bit bummed not to see him in any of the pictures. But in hind site it means more to us that he became fully qualified on that day than if he had participated in the ceremony but not been qualified yet. Pretty sure he was asleep in his room during the ceremony.
I would have loved to have had those pictures, too! Not just because it’s his first graduation in his dress blues instead of the whites! His roommate’s mom saw him for a bit last night and said that he’d been up for 36 hours and had to work the night shift. So definitely much needed sleep!
When I spoke to him about 3 weeks ago, he didn’t think he would be qualified in time. He finished early Tuesday morning.
Congratulations MoMom. I agree about the dress blues. I think they are sharp looking, but so far my son has always graduated in his dress whites and Prototype will be dress whites as well in April.
MoMom - first congratulations on him being qualified!! And I too hear you on the dress blues. We still have not seen our son on his dress blues as all the other grads were also in the whites. Since he had everything with him when he was home in December we tried to get them to dress on his dress blues at least for a picture. Guess what it didn't happen. One of these days perhaps :-)
If all goes according to plan my SR kid graduates in Feb and then moves on to Charleston. I have a lot to read here and so much to learn. So glad for all you Navy Moms - what a great resource!
I like the whites but think my daughter resembles the Pillsbury Dough boy, thank goodness she has a great figure. I liked the previous female dress blurs. My daughter was in ROTC and I'm used to seeing her in the bucket cover as opposed to the dixie cup. She loves the new uniform though and prefers the $15 dixie cup over the $50 bucket . Ladies ask your kiddos for their old dixie cups. They're great for growing hens & chicks or just as a desk decoration at work..
Mo Mom. ..congratulations. My son didn't qualify unail the last minute either. Luckily we didn't go because he didn't participate. It happens a lot with prototype.
We got an email today...run silent run deep has a whole new meaning to me. Getting used to the no communication is a process.
Has anyone’s sailor had a Chief that rode them constantly? Our son has good grades and does well with PRT but can’t seem to to get in good graces. It is very unsettling as my son told me he is worthless and has given up on being happy. Does the Chief at PowerSchool go to prototype with the class or is it a different Chief?
Submom....that is so upsetting. Honestly some of the things that go on in the navy are very unsettling . Your son should have a different chief in prototype. When does he graduate? I'm so sorry. My son has been through some tough circumstances so I understand how you feel. It is so hard as a mom.
Rebecca J he graduates in April. I just keep praying for him but there is no life in his voice when he calls (which is very infrequent since he returned from Christmas stand down) as he’s pulled away from me and his dad
Submom...I will.be praying for him too. My son was so discouraged when he left after Christmas. It was so hard to see. I hope your son has some type of support like a good friend. I'm praying very hard these days. Please keep us posted as to how he is doing. I'll be thinking of him.
SubMom- I am sorry to hear this news. I also will be praying. I don't recall my son having issues with his Chief in PS, but as I recall the ? class leader? seemed to be rubbed the wrong way by my son, from a couple of conversations we had. It is a struggle and even harder when they don't communicate with us.
Well, after a very stressful struggle trying to finish, my son passed his comps, but didn't get quals done. He is being re-rated. We are all a bit sad, but also feel a huge relief with that weight lifted. The things that made it hard on him wouldn't have changed in the fleet, so we're pretty much feeling blessed that it is working out this way. I'll miss being a "nuke mom", but I'm just proud to be his mom no matter what job he does. This group has made this transition 100% easier, knowing well in advance how to react to this news and how to be supportive. We are truly blessed.
WonderGeekWoman - First of all, I am sorry to hear about your son needing to rerate, but I also wish all the best for him in his next steps. I bumped a discussion so that you should see it above. DTP and reclassification questions. One of my friends TahoeZephyr added some extra comments last Feb regarding how DTP works. You might find this discussion helpful. Her son is out on the fleet now and seems to be doing well and enjoying his new rate.
RebeccaJ - every time my son calls me when I am in the middle of something else, I remind myself that one of these days I will be longing for that. So, I am late for other meetings, or do a lot of talking with one hand on the phone and the other elsewhere working when he calls me. I am also thankful that he has other siblings to call if mom isn't available, like "how to cook hamburger and what to do with the grease!" Hugs and peace during this time of silence!!
Chipmunk....thank you. I really appreciate your support.
We are emailing him everyday, which he said is his lifeline! That coming from my very independent son tells me a lot. So his dad and sisters and I aren't missing a day. Even though he usually cant respond, he can sometimes jump on to read the emails and they will help him get through the next 36 hours of duty. Sometimes it's hard to know what to write...I'm just making sure everything is positive and supportive on our end!
Pat - I believe that a new Power School class starts about every two months. Therefore once a sailor has graduated from A school they could have anywhere from about 2 weeks, ?maybe 1, to almost 2 months before starting Power School. During the in between time they are standing watches on T-track and still "earning their pay."
Pat - I just jumped on main chat and noticed you were asking about this group. If you just joined, there is a lot of information in the 17 pages on upper right side of our main page. Be sure to read through what currently looks relative and feel free to ask questions.
From the start of BC to the end of Prototype is approximately 2 years.
Is there anyone who knows who SubMom can contact about her son? Is there a chaplain or someone who can contact him and make sure he knows there are people there for him?
MMPotato - I have sent SubMom a couple of pms. But I just spoke to my son and he said that if a civilian has an issue they are to contact the Ombudsman, and if she has his SLPO or LPO's number to contact them, or the chaplain.
He also asked me if there was recent direct contact between the parents and the sailor. Evidently, they get a lot of contact from mom's who are upset or bothered because they haven't heard from their sailor for awhile and checking out the "worries" of an upset mother is never a good thing for anyone, - in other words a "boy cries wolf" type thing. So, they appreciate it if the parents have directly talked to their child recently to know there is a real issue.
That is at least what he shared with me, just now while on down time from his Prototype studies so he was slightly distracted.
Thank you for the advise about the Ombudsman. I know my son talked to the chaplain before Christmas- need to remind him to talk to her again. I am sorry if I raised an alarm- I truly didn’t mean to. With that said thank you for all the prayers and advice that has been sent. We are giving him space and hope to hear from him sometime this week.
Submom. ..there is no need for any apologies. We need to have a place to voice our concerns and get support . This program is so difficult and stressful the least we can do is pray for one another and our sailors. I hope you hear from your son soon and their is some improvement.
Well I feel like I can finally come clean. I was so excited when my son got his orders as he was finishing prototype but for OPSEC reasons I didn't feel like I could share my full reason for excitement. His orders were and are for the Vinson which at the time was based in San Diego - initially he was going to be in San Diego but only for a few weeks. But he got delayed getting out of Balston Spa so instead they held him at the Bangor base near Bremerton because as of today the Vinson is now home ported in Bremerton, Washington. So for at least for now our son is stationed just a short 4 hour car drive away from our home. B'sNukeMom and NancyJo I especially wanted to tell you the full story so I'm glad I can now. Also I would love to know if there are any other Vinson moms in this group - I know NancyJo was for a long time.
ProudofK that is such exciting news. It's so wonderful having your sons home port only 4 hours away. My son is also 4 hours away when his sub is in. It makes weekend visits possible. Congratulations to you!
ProudOfK - that is such wonderful news!! Enjoy what visits you can manage. Four hours was our closest grandparents and that trip was still only made a few times/ year. Unfortunately, living in the middle of the country, the seaports are at least a 2 - 3 day drive, depending on the driver or a two legged flight home.
WonderGeekWoman, thanks for sharing the news about your sailor. Rerates have turned out to be so positive for those who find nuke not the right fit. We all have a place somewhere and the goal is to find the right place for us. Good luck to him and keep us posted.
SubMom, we're here for you Sea Sister! I don't know what I would have done over the years if I had not had this group of amazing moms to turn to.
ProudOfK, big news about the CVN70!! I wonder how different things would have been for my son had he been stationed in WA instead of CA? I may not have ever met B'sNuke which to me would have been a tragedy. I know at the time he was talking about where to request his assignment that he had buddies in WA. I guess in the end they figure it out wherever they land.
NancyJo, you're in. Of course the Vegas deal was purely coincidental. B'sNukeMom just happened to mention that she would be there when I was out visiting another Navy mom. Lucky coincidence despite everything else that happened that day.
ProudofK - woohoo - that is awesome news about the Vinson being in Bremerton now - I know you are one happy momma!
JayDee and NancyJo - we should plan a trip to Vegas sometime and get a bunch of Navy Moms to go - we would have a blast! NancyJo - lucky for us that the Vinson was stationed in CA. Can't imagine if we had never met......I feel so lucky to have met so many Navy moms over the years. And eventually I'll make my way to MI and get to meet more!
SubMom - Man I am so sorry to hear that your son is feeling so down - remind him that April will be here before he knows it. Tell him to keep his head up and hang in there. Things will definitely change when he gets to prototype. B actually enjoyed prototype the best.
WonderGeekWoman - yes, thanks for sharing the news about your son. A re-rate is not the end of the world. Definitely keep us posted on where he ends up.
