New Adventure, I don't know if your Sailor is in A School yet but my son mentioned that he wanted to call now because he was well aware that once they start A School the amount of time used for classes and studying would limit phone time to call home. That might be why you can't get in touch .

  • Chipmunk

Friday evenings after about 5:30 - 6 pm (after dinner) and Saturday mornings - not too early as they might be sleeping in, and sometimes Sunday mornings were good times to check in with my sailor. I also learned when his PT times were and would often catch him after those, right before headed to go eat. But that can be tricky and depending on your time zone, might still be work time for some.

Laptop and shorts / T-shirt, even if for just in their BEQ are always nice, but make sure you have proper address. Also, sending a laptop, I would definitely insure it, pack it well (places like UPS will want to pack it themselves, or they won't insure, if I recal correctly) and get that tracking #. That will help you and your sailor. I also did my best to mail items so they would get there on Thursday. That way the mail room had time to sort it out, and then get a notice to your sailor (or you check on tracking) so they could pick it up Friday after class or Saturday morning from the mail room. I think the mail room follows typical daytime hours so getting there M-Th was often hard on my sailor. Letters/ envelopes are delivered to them in class and so I rarely mailed a letter to my sailor - as he said they get opened a lot or encouraged to in class and that may not always be a good situation. I discourage sending money and we did not even send gift cards in the mail. Instead I just put money in his account if I wanted to bless him.

    Hi all, Happy Monday!

My son had an interesting day on Friday - his roommate got married! He and 2 of his friends went off-base on Friday after class to a certain lady's house who apparently performs marriage ceremonies for a lot of the sailors at GC. His roommate's fiancé (now wife) came all the way from the west coast to visit for the weekend, and the two got married. My son and his friends were there as witnesses, and my son video-taped the ceremony. Sadly, there was nowhere for them to go afterward for a bite to eat - they were only able to find a take-out smoothie place. This was pre-planned, and the roommate did get permission to stay off-base for the weekend with his new wife. She is also in the Navy and will be heading back to her base this week and then will be deployed at some point in the near future (depending on COVID-19).

So, life does go on in spite of the pandemic, and love finds a way! <3

  • JayDee659

Velvetenor that's wonderful!  Life does go on.  My daughters was married during Power School, on base by another Nuke who had license to officiate.  I was able to hook her up with an officiant courtesy of Navy for Moms!

I'm waiting to hear from my Nuke today.  She's been waiting for the Navy to go to Duty Section only and according to Navy Times it's been made so.  That will give her more time at home and less around others.

  • somar

Just received "I'm a Sailor" call. My S said that they are holding Nukes at GL until there are enough to move them by bus to GC. So any on here please be aware of the delay for your S leaving GL.

Fortunately he will be held on the A school side of GL so he will get his phone back.

  • Chipmunk

    Congratulations Somar!!

JayDee659 - I am sure the "fur babies" will enjoy having Mom at home more.

So, this feels like a really long day for me. I think too many late nights with the time change. But I also was trying to get a care package ready to mail to my sailor. They had a local drop but since we are halfway across the country from our sailor, I couldn't make it. Instead, I made plans to ship a package, thanks to my sailor sharing his ship address. Well guess what - I had no idea and no clue, but since it is an FPO address, I had to fill out a customs form!! Try doing that with lots of little items, most of which I had in the house, so couldn't think what price to put on them, nor how to figure out the weight of everything when the postmaster had weighed the box for me to fill in the weight. Thankfully, I had double checked and the one thing my sailor wanted was a sample sized bottle of hand sanitizer. My daughter had some, but NO, I could not send those, so I went from one store to another looking for empty travel bottles, so maybe he could fill from a larger dispenser if they had one on the ship. All this time, I was putting on and taking off food service gloves!!  - But it was worth it for my sailor!

  • Chipmunk

Velvetenor - Thanks for sharing the GC wedding!! Congratulations to the newlyweds!

I had an email from my sailor this morning, someone had misread the name on the watch bill (boy were the last names close) and accidently woke my son up an hour earlier than he needed to be! Poor guy, he said he had specifically been trying to get extra sleep due to previous lack. So prayers for him. He did say he had passed his last test and gave me the next steps and then final boards to be qualified and then focus on Reactor Operator. I don't understand it all, but I know they are pushing all of them on his ship to get qualified early.

  • AP's*nuke*mom*

oh my!! I have been reading all of your posts and loving them... I was signed out and didn't realize it until today.. So here is is.. I have been trying to send A's car to him and have it all set up. But since my state is in the STAY at HOME time with this COVID-19 they cant seem to get a driver. Best part of it is that i dont even live in a county with alot of cases yet!! But anyway I got some pictures from a young lady that delivered him a birthday cake for me on sunday.. Made my day and his.... There are some many good people out there still. that makes me remember that we do have a lot of good in this world we just need to look fir the good.. thank you all for who y'all are on here... In these times we all need to be as positive as we can....

P.S. this being off work and not seeing my students is killing me.... miss my kiddos...

  • Chipmunk

AP's*nuke*mom* - too bad you can't just get in the car and drive it to your sailor, and then get a flight home!

  • Chipmunk

I hope that something can get worked out sooner rather than later. It is great to know that we have teachers who miss being with their students. Maybe you could write them a note and encourage them or give them some ideas on things to do at home.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hi everyone - Happy Tuesday.  Things are getting weirder and weirder out there and I hope everyone is safe....Every day it's something else.....

    Image result for tuesday pictures

I had to go out and help my mom with some stuff yesterday and I took my youngest son with (since he's home from NE).  I had to explain to her that we couldn't get close - social distancing is important right now.  She wanted a hug from him so bad but we couldn't let that happen.  At least she got to see him which made her happy.

Chipmunk - it's amazing how just one hour of sleep can make a huge difference at this point.....sorry he got woke up early :(

Velvetenor that is a such a sweet story.  Glad they could make it work!

I've heard that they are delaying moving sailors from boot camp to GC - and I heard they are talking about busing them.

Our news was reporting this morning that domestic flights might soon be cancelled - they are really limited right now anyhow.  Not sure how youngest is going to get back to NE on 4/9.....might not be a flight then.

AP's*nuke*mom* - I'm so glad your son was able to get a cake delivered to him!  Happy belated birthday to him!

  • Northwoodsmom

AP's*nuke*mom, I make lunches for our students and we put little notes in the bags, maybe you could talk to the kitchen staff and maybe they would let you add those in their bags for them. It's just a suggestion but you could encourage them and let them know your thinking of them. I value teachers like you. God Bless

  • Chipmunk

B'sNukeMom - Oh how hard that must have been for your mom to not have hugged her grandson!!

  • AP's*nuke*mom*

thesuperm72, Yeah I am in special education in high school and there are quit a few that don't have internet. But the teacher I work with has been emailing thru our google classroom I am the assistant so I do not have the same capabilities she does... But she does include me in the emails... So the ones that do respond I can see.   They all have chrome books... so thats a plus. I just want to know the ones that come to me and look to me as their safe place are ok.. I just keep praying for all of them... Thank you all for your kind words... I'm not sure whats harder missing my Nuke or missing my students.. Anyway Happy hump day to all...

Velvetenor, thank you so much of the pic of our sons and the wedding.... I love it.. Thay are all such good friends and look so happy!!!

  • AP's*nuke*mom*

Northwoodsmom , I just saw you post. I'm not sure if our district still is doing lunches I will Have to look... thank you so much for the amazing idea

    Hi all - Happy Wednesday!

    See the source image

I've been trying to get on and post but every time I turn around I'm scheduled to listen to another webinar on the COVID19 virus.  Trying to gather as much info as possible for our employees.  I hope everyone is safe.

Chipmunk - yes it was very hard for GMA not to get a hug from N.  But she was happy she got to see him anyhow. Continuing to do lots of facetiming with both GMA's and with B&C in Michigan.

My dad had a heart procedure done on Monday (in Seattle).  He thought they were going to cancel it but they didn't so he spent 2 nights there and then was happy to get back home.  I'm glad things went well and no complications.

  • Chipmunk

Kristen - Welcome to Nuke Moms!! Is your loved one in Goose Creek, SC at Nuke school or elsewhere?  My sailor is out in the fleet now, serving on a carrier.

  • JayDee659

BsNukeMom, I'm sorry your dad needed the procedure, but I'm glad all's well and that he's home!

I'm in charge of tracking customer shut downs.  Seems like there are more and that the ones on file are extending their shut down.  Makes me sad.

On the other hand, my dogs are in hog heaven!  Both mommy and daddy home ALL DAY.  I'll never be able to go back to work!

  • Chipmunk

B'sNukeMom - Here the governor has suspended all elective surgeries, medical and dental to spare out protective wear. Heart procedures are not what I consider elective usually, at least if it requires a hospital stay. I am sure he was glad to be home and I am glad he is doing well.

JayDee659 - I don't know exactly what you do but it sounds like what is going on with your customers is not very good. I am sorry.

  • JayDee659

Chipmunk, I'm an EA for one of the largest steel processors in the country.  Our steel is in your car, your kitchen, your lawn mower, and on and on.

It will all turn itself around.  I'm on a self imposed Media Distancing (no news for 2 weeks) but my boss told me that the market was up big today.

  • Islandgirl

    Aloha friends!
I have been trying to keep up with everything in this crazy time and so have not posted for quite some time.
Well, it’s been 2 weeks today since I returned to Maui from Charleston to visit my MMN daughter. It had been planned as a graduation party trip for A school but as some of you might remember, she had a 18 day delay. Turns out that it was best for me to keep my plans as she was able to be with me after seeing her shipmates graduate without her :( and now there will be no visitors allowed when she graduates on the 10th. I understand that post grad leaves are cancelled as well.
I’m praying for all of you wonderful moms and your families in this scary time.
On top of COVID19 here on Maui we had a Tsunami warning last night from the Japan earthquake. It was cancelled, but still shook everybody up.
B’sNukeMom - so glad the procedure was completed without incident. Medical facilities are frightening places to be just now.

I’m very proud of all you teachers trying to help keep students fed both physically and emotionally. My 17 year old son here has heard ZERO from his school or teachers since this all began during spring break. Just district messages extending stay home time. He was on track to graduate in December but now we have no idea what will happen.
Very rainy and windy on Maui today so getting caught up with housework and correspondences.
I hope you all stay well and safe and I am so grateful for the camaraderie.
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Well I guess it was just a matter of time - RTC is locking down staff for 90 days - treating it as a "deployment" and new recruits coming in are being quarantined for 14 days.  Here's an article on it:

    RTC Locking down staff

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Hi Sea Sisters! It has been a very long time for me, and as I tried to catch up and read all the posts I missed after 3 wks away, well, it took awhile. So much happening with our sailors and with you all! Weddings, medical procedures, plans torn asunder... I lift you all in prayer. I also lift especially all the family and sailors on the Roosevelt. These are crazy scary times but we'll get through it.

I visited Orange County CA just as the crisis was hitting big. It seemed like in 24 hrs the world turned upside down. It was a great trip and we got out OK. The lockdown happened after we left. I'm self-quarantining from the trip until Wednesday.

My sailor and family have been doing fine in SC but kids are kind of bored not being in school. My other children are all working from home.

The school district I work for is basically closed. A kind benefactor arranged for every employee to get a casserole yesterday. I drove through and picked up lasagna-they handed it through my car window. There was a variety to choose from. So kind! They are still paying everybody which is a Godsend.

My niece in WY is a nurse practitioner in a hospital and my sister (her mom) is afraid she has COVID19. Fever, sore throat. She is quarantining herself in her bedroom but her 2 youngest (of 7 kids) just couldn't leave her alone so Gma has them. My sister is an RN so understands the possibilities. Prayers this is just a flu.

B'sNuke, the situation being what it is, I hope N gets to stay for a long time.

Well, we've almost made it to Friday!

NancyJo - I'm so sorry I didn't get to see you when you were in OC but with us just getting home from Cabo and then all that's happened since then it just didn't work out this time :(  I'm glad you had a nice visit though while you were here and that you made it home safe.  I sure hope your niece doesn't have the virus and it is just the flu - I don't know anyone personally yet that has it but I'm guessing it might just be a matter of time....

N's flight back to NE is scheduled for 4/9 but who knows if that will happen.......of course right now there's no reason for him to even go back......

Scary what's happening on some of the carriers.  Going to be hard to contain with so many in close quarters....

  • ShipOfDoodles

    Hi, Everyone!

My son has comps Monday!! (A-School) Was looking forward to seeing him after grad, but that will have to wait for another time. He NEVER posts these days, but sent out a 20 push-up Instagram challenge, complete with video but no identifying name or facial shot. Wow, I thought--that's my kid????!!!!

Before things got out of hand with Covid-19, I committed to adding to my little doodle family. I know when the house empties out again in late August, there will be a huge hole to fill, so I am really glad I did. I actually looked for rescues, but it is nearly impossible to find hypo-allergenic rescues. So my eldest got his first non-hypoallergenic dog (Addie--a shelter lab mix), and I will be picking up Rossi soon--she's a Goldendoodle.  Did you all know that NYC has run out of dogs to place? That is good news in the midst of trying times.

Read your posts every day. Love you all.

    Meet Addi and Rossi:

ShipOfDoodles2, I am a huge animal lover too. Mainly dogs but some cats showed up on my back porch so they have become part of the family too. They are loving the fact we are home more than usual knowing they get alot more attention. Isn't it great that they ask do little of us and give so much more back. No matter how bad a day I might be having those wagging tails and admiring brown eyes makes my heart just melt.

  • Northwoodsmom

ShipOfDoodles2, oh yeah I forgot to mention I talked to my son last night and he said he starts A School Monday as well. A couple of the guys he came down with start as well, maybe they are classmates.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

ShipOfDoodles - OMG they are adorable!!!!!

Thank you B'sNukeMoM! Smitten, we are. I cannot wait to meet Addie, should my son and his fiancee ever get to leave Minneapolis!!

Northwoodsmom: yes, my two (soon to be three) doodles and Bob the Cat keep my heart overflowing! I do not know what I would do if the house were empty of these loves.

I may have confused the issue regarding my youngest. He had PIR 11/08, so is just finishing up MMN--excited to class up for Power School at some point--should he get through these last exams as well as he has the others. I have been following along on all the stories about our sailors who started before and after my son. I don't know what your son's specialty will be, but mine said the time has absolutely flown by. He has been a happy guy! So, best wishes to yours on his classroom journey ahead! Keep us posted!!

(Sure wish we had the ability to "heart" a post on this site like we can on Instagram. Love, love, love the many inspiring and fun posts and memes!)

Hey everyone - now more than ever we need to show our support for the military - please remember to wear your RED tomorrow!

Have a good evening and be safe!

  • sunflower

I just heard from my son. He said that they are all stuck on base now. I take that to mean that they are on lock-down.

  • Pooh'sMom

    Sunflower

    Where is your son?

  • Northwoodsmom

Sunflower, thanks for sharing the news. Mine was down in Charleston last weekend, he said they were being careful but to a young adult careful doesn't mean the same thing as careful means to a mom. I am so glad they are now restricted, maybe I can no longer ground him but the Navy sure can, LOL. In fact the Navy has accomplished more in the last 3months than I have in 26 years.

  • ShipOfDoodles

Thank you, thesuperm72! Loved your recent catchup, and will let you know how things go! Thumbs up for your daughter the rest of the way!
  • Chipmunk

    JayDee659 - Thank you!

Enjoyed all the news, pictures, and memes today!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Yesterday I asked my sailor how his job has changed since COVID and he said hasn't really which he thought was strange. He's an instructor at NNPTC. So, our sailors are still moving through the pipeline.

  • Chipmunk

NancyJo - NNPTC is probably handling things as most of the other bases and military installations are. Although, the classrooms in the Rickover hold groups larger than 10.

    Recent HPCON information:

Glad you are back home NancyJo!

Had to dig out my red T-shirt to wear today! Yesterday's temps in the summer would have meant the A/C on, but thankfully the house is not quite so hot yet and we have overcast today, but the fans are on. Not ready for A/C weather in March!! Almost 90'.

  • Velvetenor

ShipOfDoodles - thank you for sharing the puppy pics! They are adorable!! Since I have been married to my husband (25 years) I have not been able to have any pets due to his allergies, which are pretty severe. I have been looking into possibly getting a Goldendoodle since we are going to be empty-nesters soon and I will be alone working from home most days in the future (COVID-19 notwithstanding). However, I know that there is no such thing as a completely hypo-allergenic dog, so my husband is not convinced we should get any dog. What are your thoughts on this?

  • ShipOfDoodles

Hi, Velvetenor! I have adult onset of exercise and allergy -induced asthma--allergic to cats and about 30 other trees, grasses, leaf mold, animals, etc. which is why I went this route. Yes, it is expensive, but a reputable breeder will have the DNA testing of the sire and dam confirming hair coat--lots to learn, ha ha. If you choose a multi-gen doodle (labra, golden, etc.), you can pretty much rest assured there will be very little shedding--if any. I can wear all black, shower my doodles with all kinds of affection, rubbing their coats etc., and not have a hair on me. What I do find occasionally, are small fuzzy dust balls in a corner here and there. Their coats remind  me of wool in a way. My son is highly allergic to my cat, and has trouble with the doodles only if he pets them excessively and then rubs his eyes. He usually adjusts after a day of being around them. My doodles sleep with me and I keep a blanket over my comforter at night--washing it every few days. I cannot say enough about this particular "breed"--they are so loving, so friendly, so happy and have such wonderful personalities. You can PM me any time if you would like more information!

  • JayDee659

ShipOfDoodles, those are adorable!  I can't find it right  now, but I had a picture of my black lab laying there with the same Kong Moose.  Bosley loved his moosie and I still have it even though Bosley passed on in 2016.

My girls got groomed yesterday.  They were pooped when I got them home, but they look wonderful!

I had a long talk with my Nuke last night.  They are down to two days on, 6 off.  She and her room mate are on different duty sections so the dog, cats and hedgehog will not be home alone.  She does think that after they all get tested, more cases will pop up.  Hopefully it won't be too bad.

  • New Adventures

Velvetenor-  We have allergies in our house too and put off getting a dog despite the begging of our children for years.   We have two labradoodles now and as empty nesters I can not imagine life with out them.

For the first we went the breeders house.  She was very accommodating and only brought a couple of possible puppies in at a time.  We went to look at her 8 week old goldendoodle litter.  The one the kids loved sent my nose a twitching.    She had a girl left of a labradoodle litter who was 10 week and black.  I guess black puppies sometimes go last.  15 years later she is still with us.

The kids fought over her and drove me nuts.  I was connected to the doodle owners group and a breeder there was helping someone find a new home for a 4 month old puppy.  They lived about 9 hours away but had family about 1/2 between us.  We went and check out the puppy and they check us out.  He is my shadow now that his boy is in the Navy.

Allergies can come from many things.  The dander is the most common but pee and saliva can be issues too.  The first family had one in diapers and one in pull ups.  I think they missed the my fuzzy boy was an excitement peer and since he had not yet had a hair cut just kind of mopped it up.  gross  I know.  We got him all cleaned up and better trained and the issues went away.  I think it was why they could not keep him even after bringing him all the way for Australia.

Feel free to message me as well.

Hi all - well we made it to Friday - and our company is still open (for now!).  Trying so hard to be super careful with everything.  My husband went to both Winco and Costco today and no toilet paper lol.  He said he just missed it at Costco.....crazy times for sure!

The USNS Mercy arrived at the Port of Los Angeles (not too far from me) and they plan on using it for patients who DO NOT have COVID-19 but need hospitalization.  Here's an article on it:

Hello All -- checking in from So Cal. Lock down isn't a whole lot different from our normal retired life except for the lost volunteer & social activities plus dining out. It took hubby awhile to fully comprehend that isolation is all or nothing-he finally took heart when the local Starbucks fully closed thus cancelling his daily social meet-up. We are both high-risk (age & some medical). Luckily we had no trips planned, pending our nuke's schedule.

The exact situation here is unknown. Several cases at the military bases plus have evacuation quarantines at Miramar and cruise ships coming in out of desperation. The news reports statistics of residents vs. non-residents but not much more specifics for individual neighborhoods. So sad about the Roosevelt--hope your sailors are ok.

On the GC front, I have good news for you Mom's who are trying to get some semblance of the upcoming schedule. Our nuke is classing up for Power School right now, exactly at the time he told us back in January. So NNPTC is still on schedule. He says the 7 week T-Track was a good break; now he is ready for class again. My heart breaks for those of you who missed graduations and/or time with your sailors.

Saw photos of the USS Mercy sailing out of San Diego Bay a few days ago. I am so proud of the crew that were able to get her ready in such a short time. She is normally a beautiful sight at SD Naval Base.

Our weather has been ever changing over the last several weeks. Several big rains then sun. Last night was quite a show with hail & lightning. So heads up to those of you further east.

Wearing red today. Stay safe all!

  • Chipmunk

Islandgirl - I enjoyed your post the other day. I was surprised to hear about the earthquake in Japan. I have extended family stationed there and had not heard anything, so "No News is Good News." But a Tsunami warning on top of everything else would be unnerving. Tornado season is coming up on us here and I am not looking forward to it.

I wanted to share a link with you for your 17 yr old son - mine is to watch CNN-10 every morning and this week he shared the links & one line recap with his siblings. Wednesday they took a tour of Hawaiian lava caves, along with other news. It is 10 min, the host is funny, geared towards school age and we have been watching it for several years now. I find it to be about as balanced for national news as possible.

    https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/24/cnn10/ten-content-weds/index.html

Canuka- Thanks for sharing, I had to chuckle about Starbucks, but I do hope that your husband is able to keep up with his friends. My father was a college professor and even after retirement, he would go over for morning coffee and conversation. My mother said the reason she would not make him move closer to us kids was because he needed that mental interaction with his colleagues on a regular basis to keep his mind alert and for his own well-being.
