Oh ladies! Just gotta share. Got to spend a weekend with my son after NOT seeing him for 14 months! He just graduated dive school and now will be on his way back to the fleet to use his new skills. But I had to remember as I said goodbye how many times and how many moms are missing their sailors. Thanks for always being there during the lonely and rough times.
Thank you. No diving school is NOT required, but a sub is suppose to have a certain number of qualified divers to go underway. Most of the people in his class were Nukes, though. As my sailor told me they are ALWAYS in some type of training and qualification because everyone keeps moving up and on.
Diving school is definitely not for everybody. When I saw some of the videos of the class training I almost got sick with fright! and that was just for SCUBA. The full-time divers have a lot of physical challenges they must undergo. There is no doubt our sailors are well trained and challenged every day.
Northwoodsmom, please know that being far away from your kids when they are challenged is one of the worst times for any mom, but you're doing a great MOM job. Hold strong and we're all sending prayers.
Chipmunk - I want to thank you especially for your words of encouragement over these last several months. While I really appreciate the support I have received from all the moms on this site, you definitely go the extra mile with well thought out private responses that obviously must take quite a bit of time.
Rakenator - your prayer for NWM is spot on. I could not say if so eloquently.
CSW - so happy for you to have gotten a visit this weekend! It does renew our mamma souls.... I am winding up my visit with my son now. He wants to go back to base soon for some extra study time. Says they have the hardest of the A school test later this week. They call it the widow maker! It was good to see him again. Quite a cold wet weekend, but worth every shiver.
CSW - How exciting!! I know you have waited long for that visit.
TheHammer - How are you doing? I know you have had challenges with seeing your sailor. Just checking in on you.
Velvetenor - We miss you. I hope things are well with the new job and all up your direction.
Good morning everyone! It is great to hear from all of you!!
DsMom2020 - Thank you! I appreciate your kind words! Be sure to read through my A school schedule discussion above. I think I mention that final test, especially for his rate. They call it the widow maker because of how much time they have to spend studying and it is also a pretty intense level of expectations. You might have to scroll through some of the posts that I made in the discussion.
Northwoodsmom - Your sailor is being surrounded with lots of love and prayers.
When I think of the long hours that my son puts on his ship, I know that it is not the same as what is expected of the sailors on a sub, and I still have some communication from time to time. BNMHs to all of you with sailors serving underwater!!
We have snow and cold, my computer weather says it is -3' & feels like -26'. Quite unusual. Snow on the ground but the sun is shining in my work rooms and I have things to get ready for my home based ministry.
For those in TX how are you doing? I have family that I am trying to keep up with there.
My husband is joking that I'm stuck with him for a few days, because we're both off work and not going anywhere with the snow and cold. Tx is having rolling blackouts to take pressure off the electricity grid so I'm putting off doing some chores like laundry that require energy. A good excuse to take it easy for a few days, I think. My son is at his brother's place, so we won't see him for a few days either.
Northwoodsmom - praying that they figure out what is wrong with your son. Scary situation indeed.
CSW - yay for visits! Glad you got to spend some time with your son - and good for him on completing dive school.
helena - this cold weather storm is absolutely crazy. Definitely stay put!
I saw the weather for my youngest in NE this morning. Said it was -13* and felt like -32* . That is crazy - NancyJo how are you doing there in NE? I just can't even imagine that kind of cold.
Yes, it's cold here in NE as is just about everywhere else. We made it up to -4* feels like -19* but that's as high as it will go today. They've called off school in my district for tomorrow and I will work from home. I think we should be above zero tomorrow mid-afternoon. I lost internet today because of the rolling blackouts. That's worrisome. But my sailor in SC is enjoying mid-50's so he's loving that, something like southern CA if I'm not mistaken. :D
NancyJo - N is working from home too (and UNL cancelled classes today and tomorrow). And of course - no practice in this weather. He said it's so cold his car won't start! I guess the car is missing CA too lol! We're at 59* right now and I'm sorry to say but that's even too cold for me. Be careful and stay warm!
We have this cute little rock garden near us where people paint rocks and leave them for others to take - and they also hide them around the city. Hubby and I went there yesterday and I picked out this "Love" rock. Goes perfect with our heart that we gave each other for Valentine's Day.
Our students were to return to campus for the first time since October tomorrow. Just received word that it will be one more day of virtual due to the weather.
Aw that heart is precious! Nice to see romance after many years together. A colleague at work says they are without power due to rolling blackouts. That's a bad thing at -24. Glad I'm at home.
No it's not the ice. In a nutshell NE produces excess power for its needs so we are part of a partnership with southern states, notably Texas, that underproduce. Out load right now is being tested in an extremely rare low temp weather pattern and where we need that extra power, we are complying with our agreement with the other states. These states are also under threat with the weather so everybody is in a pickle. I am at home with everything possible off. I'm hearing about car accidents due to traffic lights off. I have also heard my workplace is without power. Yes, it's scary with these temps but we will start getting warmer (hopefully) this afternoon and by Thursday we will be relatively warm. We just need to sit tight and help our neighbors and not freak out. Hey, Navy moms are tough!
B'sNuke, is N doing OK? Is he able to stay warm? I don't know if Lincoln is having the power problems that Omaha has. They are a different power company.
Even our local news last night was covering the winter weather - it is crazy. I can't believe how big this winter storm is. It's actually scary how cold it is.
NancyJo, yes Lincoln is also having rolling blackouts lasting about 30-60 minutes per substation. I have lived in Lincoln my entire life and never had a blackout since previously we used our generation then sold our excess. Now that we’re in the power pool we get to sacrifice for the greater good. But that is really difficult for people who are used to consistently reliable power.
Hey Wink5 - good to see you here! We talked to N last night - he said he wasn't aware of any rolling blackouts but of course he doesn't pay attention to those type of things. Luckily he was staying put in his house (and his car won't start so he can't go anywhere anyhow lol!). Guess I'll check in with him this morning and see how the night went. Stay warm!
Thanks for helping me understand. Not sure why we need to be in a power pool when we're sitting on top of a huge supply of oil. Crazy how quickly politics can affect our life. Hang in there Moms. :)
Praying for you and our country and remember.... The Sun will come out tomorrow :)
Thank you all for the prayers for my son, he said he is feeling better but still has the chills.
Today will be our first day in 12 days that our temps will hit above zero, I am looking forward to it. We are use to these temperatures but still hate when the last for days. They are predicting 30's by Sunday, t-shirt weather for some of us. Seriously I pray you all are safe and sound in a warm house with plenty to eat. They buried our electric cables several years ago because of constant outages. We barely have any now.
So, I just had a nice little conversation with my hubby (his work is closed) who explained to me how all of the rolling power outages work. Also, the difference between how the North deals with this sort of weather versus the south and why they are not having difficulties with gas lines freezing. Very interesting.
I talked to my sailor last night and I said, this is what you are planning on working towards when you get out of the Navy right? That is getting people to recognize and utilize the benefit of nuclear power.
And yes, politics plays a huge part in all of this. My husband likes to remind people, "Cold kills" - we have to make provisions for dealing with cold. And if those provisions aren't made, we have to help out our neighbors as best as we are able.
From what I am hearing many of the power sources in Texas are frozen up so not useable. My sister is down there on vacation right near the Mexican border. They had now power, no heat and no water yesterday. Have not heard from her today but they were going to a friends that had heat - at least yesterday. Yes a bit scary. I also have a niece in Texas - they had power but no water due to frozen broken pipes.
Yes, many of the wind turbines are frozen up here in Texas, also affecting power generation. Our water has been under a boil order since yesterday because of low pressure issues due to freezing and power outages. Now they've put us on emergency use only for water. Even the Walmarts around here are closed for now. We're thankful to still have heat and water, because many including two of my coworkers haven't had heat since yesterday morning. The roads are hazardous as well. Now we're waiting for the next round of snow and ice.
Good Morning and Happy Wednesday! Sending sunshine to all - please stay safe. I saw pictures of Texas on the news this morning - it was 37* inside of someone's house - no heat at all. Sink was frozen over and there were icicle's hanging off their ceiling fan.....and they say more is coming.
Hi, I received an odd email supposedly from this site asking me to not delete my profile if I am considering leaving. Did anyone else get this? Was someone or something hacked?
As for the weather. I have a friend who just moved to TX from PA. She gave or sold all her warm clothes away and is regretting it now! Living in the north east in a snow zone we are used to it. Have the car at least 1/2 full, house stocked, fireplaces often, layers, layers, layers. But once there was a big regional power outage when the kids where young. One coal plant still exited then ( it has since been torn down )and supplied power to a town in the area. Everyone flocked to the diners there for warms and food. After a couple of days we drove south until we found power and a hotel room. Called the house couple times a time to see if the answering machine picked up which meant the power was back on. It was a week. Great adventure with museums and lots of walking. Been through a few other winter power things over the years.
A heat wave and no power is a big deal for me- Hate the heat. Used to joke I was retiring to Alaska. Dh hates the cold and want to retire south so where we live is a good compromise. It is all in what you are used to I guess.
New Adventures - that email was actually from me. I'm one of the admins on here and I sent out an email to all members. This is just a reminder to everyone that if you delete your profile ALL of your comments are deleted with it. We recently had a member leave (her son fulfilled his service) and all of her comments over the last 10 years went away with her. Lots of valuable info gone.....
B’sNukeMom, thanks for the email. It spurred me to get back on here! Good to see you are still around.
It has been nice to talk with my Sailor for almost two months but he’s getting ready for another underway, followed by a much longer deployment. Hoping he gets his shore duty assignment by this time next year.
Hope everyone is doing well, staying safe, healthy and warm!
Good Morning everyone!! We are finally thawing out!!! Yeah!!
I had my RED on Friday but so many layers that I don't know if anyone saw it or not.
May your day today be full of goodness and mercy, rich in love and hopefully, hopefully you have had some communication from your sailors!! Mine was usually back studying on Sunday afternoon.
Hey folks, I have a question. My mother, who has advanced dementia, had a stroke this week, and has been in the hospital. She and my dad (who has leukemia) live at home with the help of my nephew who lives with them, and a part time caregiver. Here's my question: Do I tell my sailor, who is on an underway, about what's going on? Would I need to contact the Red Cross to do so? Mom doesn't seem in imminent danger of dying, but has definitely taken a turn for the worse. What have others done in similar circumstances?
PacNWmom, my son was in A School, I didn't tell him about his Grandma getting Covid until right before our Loving Lord took her home. When that happened I asked the ombudsman to contact the Chaplain but she contacted his Chief and he took him out of class and talked to him and then had him call home. I don't know if this helps but that is how we dealt with it. I didn't want him to worry and for him to keep his mind on school. Not saying our decision was the right one but it was what we chose to do. It is a very difficult decision and you know your child better than anyone so all you can do is pray and ask for direction. I am so sorry you are going through this. Prayers to you and your family.
PacNWmom - my son was on an underway when his Dad passed away. I contacted the Ombudsman and she got in touch with his Command. I did have to notify the Red Cross and they took care of the rest. I am not sure how they handle serious illnesses, but in our case, my son was allowed to fly home as soon as they went into port. My only disappointment with the process was the manner in which my son was told. It was formal and very insensitive from my point-of-view, and from what my son said, it seemed heartless.
PacNWmom - I am going to share my opinion only and I have not had to deal with quite the same situation.
So, my husband's uncle was sick and in the hospital. My son's ship has been going in and out of port on short underways. I don't recall exactly the timing, but I had talked to him prior to their leaving about his great -uncle (who he actually knows a little better than his uncles). As I recall, we found out that my husband's uncle passed away about the same time they were returning into port. My son had a duty day and was not off the ship immediately, so I had called and talked to his girlfriend and told her. I asked her to have him call home, but she could also share with him. It was at least better than someone who didn't know my son talking to him.
For my son, extended family like that is okay to not know about immediately. It is a little different with his siblings and his only remaining grandparent, but even then, I think if they were just sick in the hospital, I would honestly send him an email message to his ship email and just let them know they are sick and prepare him.
I may be incorrect but, I think Red Cross only has to be contacted if they are trying to make provisions for a military person to come home or if you aren't able to get information through to the ship.
Hugs to you!! I lived a distance from both of my parents when they were ill and was not able to be with my father. My mother had a stroke, we believe, and I was able to get to her before she passed away. My youngest had just left on a camping trip. I made contact with his sponsors via text and then they were able to let him call me at a stopping point when I could tell him about his grandmother. He was only 14, but I knew that he would want to know as soon as possible.
Hi KayCee - How are you doing?? Are we still celebrating all of the holidays? We had a lot of snow our direction!!! Felt like I was back up your way. Mostly it was too cold for too many days. Sun was out today and the temps were finally above freezing. In one and a half days, all of our snow is gone!! It was good to see a few birds back in our yard.
Hi Chipmunk! We did have a wonderful Christmas celebration with my sailor, thanks for asking. He ended up having first day duty after homecoming, so he wasn't able to come home that day. I went to pick him up on his next day off and brought him home so he could get his car. We did our Christmas Eve traditions that night and then celebrated Christmas Day the next morning and had our big meal in the late afternoon. He drove his car back afterward since he had to work next day.
The stand-down time after deployment is divided into two times and my sailor has the second leave. He will be able to come home and really relax at the end of this month. It was SO wonderful to see him, hug him, talk with him and cook for him! Turns out he chose to change his diet shortly after starting deployment. He does not eat meat now, however, he does eat seafood.
We had a few days of big snow here, but it has mostly all melted. Happy to hear you enjoyed some sun today and the birds have returned.
Good morning Ladies, does anyone know who they get in contact with if the loose their eye glasses. Apparently my son can't find his and can't see the black board or maybe it is the white board during class. I told him to ask his SLPO but I am not sure if that's right. Thank you.
Hello Northwoods - He can go to any outside eye doctor/store for free check up, he may want to call first if they accept Tri care. Or be the one to call and set an appointment for your son. Contacts and eye glasses are not covered by Tri Care. My son did his when he’s here during Christmas holidays.
Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page. Lots of good info there. Also take a look at the Pages (20) to the right under the member profiles - be sure to hit "view all". And the discussion forum above has some good info too - be sure to read Chipmunks "Nuke A School Daily Schedule". And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have.
Hello, ladies. I haven't posted in a very long time, and I stopped receiving emails from the group. So i just wanted to check in.
Welcome to the new members!
I hope all of our Texas families are doing well. My brother-in-law and his family were without power for several days, but, thankfully, one of his daughters kept hers. there were a lot of people crammed into a tiny house, but they were safe and warm.
My son is out on his second underway, hopefully returning soon. I haven't spoken to him since Christmas, He did have leave, but wasn't able to travel, since he had 2 back to back underways coming up. In March, it will have been 2 years since I've seen him. =(
Got the "I'm graduating!" call from bootcamp today. So after PIR on Thursday, he will be headed to Goose Creek for A School. He has not learned what rate he will be assigned yet. He sounded upbeat and happy. He said he cried during the capping. Since he's not a really emotional guy, I know this experience has been very powerful and changing for him. I am so proud! I've been reading the comments and am appreciative of all the information everyone shares. It makes me less anxious about what is to come. Happy Monday!
Gigi
Northwoods - Love and prayers for you and your son.

Thinking about all of you!

Wishing everyone a great week ahead!

Hi All!
