Chipmunk - thank you for the info re: transition period. That’s a long time prep for them

Northwoods- continued prayer for your son, read my story after this,  my son will be in quarantine

Shipofdoodles - congratulations! Thanks for asking those questions- my son first choice is Hawaii

  • Gigi

Hello ladies, wanted to share an update about my son

Friday- he called (was a happy call), the mandatory study hour of 20, down to 10 last week then exceled, and now has been lifted. They were loud not sure how many of them going to a married nuke house. Asking for facetime but NOPE NOPE, (I knew) he’s with friends.

Sunday – my so awaited facetime Yes for over an hour! After studying grab some food and got caught up in the rain, was stuck in the car. Thankful of the rain!

This morning – a call you didn’t want to hear. He will be quarantined for 10 days, covid or not covid. His allergies are kicking! This time of the year he/we would be in urgent care asking for eyedrop prescription every year, every year!! We didn’t get a chance to facetime as he was already in the clinic, but previously it looks like a pink eye but not contagious or infected. Said he was just asking for Claritin or any eye drops that help the itchiness hence everything will be treated like covid, he will be tested which is good.

I’m worried he will be behind. He just got out of mandatory hour. 10 days quarantine,  that’s 2 weeks worth of school. I hope when the result came out negative after 2-3 days they will let him go back to class. Prayer warriors please help…

  • DsMom2020

Gigi - praying he tests negative and they let him out of quarantine! Anyone know if they do that?

    Hi all - Happy Wednesday!

Oh Gigi - Fingers crossed it is just his allergies.  I know the pollen count has been high the last few days.  I'm sure he's miserable and the thought of having to quarantine is not a pleasant one.  He'll get through this though!  Hang in there ;-D

  • ShipOfDoodles

Thinking of you Gigi and Northwoods! Hang in there!!

  • Northwoodsmom

Gigi, just got back from getting my taxes done and saw your message. My heart goes out to your son mine hated quarantine. He also tested negative but made him stay in quarantine for the whole time, here's hoping it won't be the same for yours. The good thing with still being in A school is there are more classes so there should be more chances to get into a class. My son was originally suppose to graduate in April from Power School but who knows what will happen now. My only source of sanity is I left him in God's hands, there must be a reason for it so I am going with the flow.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. Praying for you Gigi and your son.

  • Chipmunk

Gigi - Thank you for actually reminding me to take my allergy medicine. Things have been crazy here with the pollen counts, my husband said it is due to our ice storm when leaves were still on the trees and then our cold freeze in Feb. I don't know, mine are worse, but my son has not been bothered this year. I am hopeful that his tests are negative and they let him go back to studying and classes.

If he does get set back, it hopefully will be to his benefit.

  • Chipmunk

Hi D'sMom - I enjoy seeing your posts in various places as you are able. I am not sure if they will let them out or not. From Northwoodsmom's comment, sounds like they might be in quarantine regardless.

  • DsMom2020

    Hi Chipmunk

I saw NWM comment too. That’s too bad!! They could follow CDC guidelines and reduce the quarantine time to 10 days from symptom onset (that’s with a positive test). With a negative test to quarantine 14 days is just crazy. It’s no wonder that some of the sailors don’t disclose when they don’t feel good. It’s such a difficult situation no matter how one looks at it. I feel really badly for The sellers that have to go through this when they have to switch classes and lose all those friends. One can hope they meet up again in Power School or Prototype!

  • Chipmunk

DsMom2020 - I agree. There is a lot with the ROM, not only in BC, but in A school and in the fleet that I disagree with and I can do nothing about it. I would say more but it is my opinion and doesn't help things, so I do my best to offer encouragement to my sailor, help where I can and pray when I can't. I do believe that the ROM is a big struggle for our military and for our loved ones and so doing what I can to stay connected as much as possible is important and being there for them to spout off at us, or to unburden and not trying to fix anything is also important for our sailors.

  • DsMom2020

Hi Chipmunk. - this is just one of many life issues where one could accept and try to move calmly past it instead of allowing it to frustrate. I guess the phrase “you can’t fight city hall” applies. I agree that supporting our sailors and families through this frustrating time is important. I just took a moment to vent but it doesn’t help anyone else to get through it. Thank you for seeing and reminding me of the big picture

    Hello everyone,

Thanks all for your support. So my son’s test came back negative and it’s all his allergies but won’t given any allergy med. we FaceTime as he was unpacking his clothes to a new room. Yes he’s in quarantine til April 14th (14 days for a negative result). Not sure what happened with his friends, he’d been asked who he interacted with from the last 3 days. Coz clinic said he got “symptoms- coughing and itchy eye”. All names okayed to be mentioned as they’re expecting it anyway. He got the 2 mail slips Monday but didn’t get a chance to pick up those packages, now I’m thinking it will go back again in California. It’s a lot of food, (over $100 worth) been excited to share it with his friends. We were also on FaceTime at Costco while he chose what he wants. Ughh

Praying he will survive this 2 weeks ROM as he complained already about being bored. Glad he can transfer back and forth his internet modem/router (already moved 3x after A school)

  • Northwoodsmom

Gigi I am so so sorry. It really does suck but I understand the need to keep everyone safe even if it means going to the extreme. My son's room buddies were only quarantine for 3 days because they never got sick or had any symptoms. There is one piece of information I can share that actually is good, he will get 3 square meals a day and they will have him put on his mask and come outside his room so they can see that he is doing okay. All that yucky food they show you on Facebook is not what my son experienced, he said the food was good. He definitely was bored though so I am holding your son up in prayer that he has a easy time of it. Thinking of you.

  • Chipmunk

Gigi - I am so sorry to hear all of this. This stuff is all so different than when my son was there. My sailor doesn't deal with allergies but I would have been telling mine where to go to Wal-Mart up the street (he could get there on his bicycle) and what medicine to buy over the counter for allergies. This is very frustrating.

I am in a conversation with another mom in a totally different situation but her sailor is also in hold. It is hard to hear some of the stories of what is going on and as moms we just feel hopeless and out of control. As I have said, I don't agree with some of the decisions that are being made but part of being a military family is remembering that you are not the most important thing, the military is.

For me personally, when I am in these situations, and generally it is after I have ranted and raved to my husband, who will give me his two cents worth, I have to start praying for those in charge of the situations for wisdom and direction. For my children, for any involved. It is the only way that I can deal with not being able to deal with the negative and pessimistic thoughts. And for things that are lost, I start praying for them to be found. I know this isn't how every one deals with things, but it is how I deal with it.

HUGS and if he is getting fed three times a day, that is better than some of our sailors are getting in ROM and various situations that I have heard, so find the good and focus on something partially positive in the midst of frustrating negatives.

    Hi all - Happy Friday!

    Oh Gigi - I'm glad he tested negative but sorry to hear that he still has the 14 day quarantine.  Frustrating to say the least...I wonder if there's any way he can get a friend to pick up the package - maybe if they explain the situation.  Wishful thinking I know.....and what a bummer that he can't get any allergy meds!  I don't even really have allergies and yet the last few days my nose has been driving me crazy.  I can't imagine how he's feeling....{{sigh}}

DsMom2020 - I apologize, I missed your reply to me yesterday. Please do not ever feel like you can't vent here. That is part of what this site is for. The more I read things on my son's ship's Ombudman page, the more I see that as a good place for our military spouses to vent during the separation days and our Ombudsman listens and then encourages. N4M is the same way, we listen to each others frustrations, concerns, fears and emotions and then we encourage.

Yes, this is sort of like "you can't fight city hall." A good analogy.

  • DsMom2020

Chipmunk. Thank you for that. Venting is good, but hearing how to best encourage our sailors is good too. It reminds me of the serenity prayer - God grant me the serenity To accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can; And wisdom to know the difference. I just feel so bad for the sailors (and mammas) that have to deal with ROM, especially when it doesn’t follow the science. But it is what it is!

  • Chipmunk

DsMom2020 - You are welcome! And thanks for link to the prayer, it showed up in my email feed. I don't think I have read the entirety of that prayer. I was talking to my MIL yesterday about something as well that she had no authority in the situation, but she did have prayer. When someone else had made a decision that she disagreed with and believes would have had a different outcome, it was hard on her, but she took it with grace and was loving and forgiving to the other party. I remembered that and I had to call her because it blessed me and taught me strength in those times of not being able to change the things that I can't change. My call ended up being a blessing to her as well, encouraging her with the decision she had made. We also had a good visit since our schedules have been busy and we won't be able to go see her for Easter.

  • Ksailmom

Any recommendations for a hotel by Charleston airport? Hopefully they still have shuttle service to airport. Taking car to our son this week. Thanks in advance for info.

  • CanukaVet

Ksailmom - we stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn on International Blvd just off I526. It was pretty basic but had an airport shuttle, about 5 minutes.. They gave us a noon check out because our flight was late in the day. There was a Doubletree across the street with a Chili's in the parking lot. The outlet mall is nearby.
We only stayed one night because we spent most of our time, with our sailor, at a downtown hotel.
This was pre-covid, in November 2019.
Have a good trip to deliver the car. He will appreciate it. Right now my boy is taking his time bringing the car and himself back.
  • Chipmunk

    Good Morning Everyone!!

I am hopeful that all of you in some form or fashion will have an opportunity to reach out to your sailor / loved one, and tell them how much you appreciate all that they are doing to serve you and their country. I am impressed more and more how deeply our military needs our appreciation for all that they are going through during this time. I often take for granted my freedoms, even just having Sunday off and able to celebrate Easter with my family, and then am reminded that not everyone has that same opportunity.

    Hugs and love to all!!

  • CSW

Well, it was nice to take a break from all the electronics and spend some time with family. Still missing my sailor, but had a great time with my dad and brother this Easter. Hoping everyone had at least a small moment of sharing time with loved ones. Wishing you all a good week full of smiles and word from your sailor!  Happy Monday!

  • Chipmunk

Good Morning CSW - I am glad that you had some good family time!!  I told my kids that were with me yesterday, my one bittersweet moment of the day was when I was glazing my spiral ham and thinking about my son. He always liked my glazed ham and knowing he had to work on Easter was sad, but they had been given some liberty time, so I knew he had opportunities to relax as well and that was good!!

My son called and he finally restarts Power School classes on Tuesday. It's been a long 6 weeks in hold, hoping he has maintained what he already learnt. Sounds like he is really maturing, knocked my socks off a couple of times. My daughter and I booked a week down there hoping for a visit but if he can't we will still enjoy Charleston. She is quite the firecracker so never a dull moment when I am with her, she has a way of encouraging me to try new things ( but I am still not jumping out of a plane ).

Gigi I hope your son is doing alright in ROM, hopefully he will be back in class soon, I think A School is different. Thinking of you.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Northwoodsmom - yay!  Glad to hear he finally has a new start date for PS.  I hope he's able to spend some time with you on your visit - but either way you'll have fun in Charleston.  Nice that your daughter is joining you - and I don't blame you for not wanting to jump out of an airplane lol!

  • Chipmunk

Northwoodsmom -- That is great news!! I know he is ready to start back up with his studies.

Gigi - Yes, how is yours doing? Was he able to get some allergy medicine? Our wind has been blowing so strong and the weird ice and freeze seems to have all of the pollen messed up. I hope he gets back to his studies quickly.

Our poor trees and bushes, that ice storm in Oct before all of our plants had lost their leaves, and then our below freezing temperatures for much longer than is normal around here, seems to have done a lot of damage to certain trees and bushes. I need to look up and see what Magnolia trees and holly bushes are, if the are conifers or deciduous? Their waxy green leaves usually hold up through the winters here, but not this last year. And most of the Crepe Myrtles also seem to have died as well. So, we will be doing some replanting of bushes on our property.

My son is finally out of ROM today just got his text. 10 days it is! Thank God. Said will run and been cooped up way too long, felt like his blood wasn’t circulating.  He’s only in Power School for a month so hoping he will join the next batch and start fresh.

Northwoodsmom - glad to hear your good news too. I’m sure your son is so ready to be back. Enjoy Charleston and nope nope no jumping out on the plane.

Question for you: during this 6 weeks while he waits- was he like in T-Track?

Chipmunks- are you living now in the new house? No he’d not given any med. Hoping his packages are still there.

    D’smom - he’s graduating this April right?

    Welcome Elina!!

    I’m wearing red today!

  • Northwoodsmom

Gigi, hello so glad your son is out. He was actually in hold but it was little like T-track. My son said it was boring but got time to go in and study his. Notes to try and keep his mind still involved. They also gave him cleaning to do. He thinks he has found a better way to study, I certainly hope do. They really want everyone to make it and if you show them you are really trying they work with you. He should of been graduating in couple weeks but thats okay, I will be happy to have him there a while longer. Maybe your son will be able to start next Tuesday too, then they will be together. Praying he gets started again soon.

  • DsMom2020

NWM it so good to hear the pride and happiness in your posts! I’m happy your son is impressing you with his maturity. Mine son has also matured and it makes me feel sooooo good. I hope you get to see him while in Charleston! I hope the weather is nice. I’ve had a cold trip and a rainy trip. It is still charming tho!

Gigi - glad ROM was only 20 days instead of 14! My son graduates A school in May. We’re planning another trip to watch graduation. He says he’ll get liberty time but not leave. As always, made refundable reservations just in case....

For anyone traveling by plane, I’ve had decent luck with the hopper app getting reasonable airfare.

  • DsMom2020

Gigi. Obviously a typo. Meant 10 days.

  • Chipmunk

Elina - Welcome to the group! Be sure to ask your questions here that you had asked me in a PM. The ladies who have sailors currently at GC might be able to better help you with some of the COVID logistics.

  • Northwoodsmom

Welcome Elina, let us know if there is anything we can help you with.

  • Northwoodsmom

Gigi and DsMom2020, last year was one disappointment after another. We had to cancel one motel reservation in March, and two airbnb's, one in early June and the other in July. This time I am just going to look at it as a vacation that I get to share with my beautiful daughter and if we get to spend time with my son it will be a extra bonus. We did plan the location with him in mind, we original planned a trip to a little German town in Michigan but the cost was the same so we decided on Charleston. If he wasn't there Charleston wouldn't of even been on our radar so that is also a bonus. It should be very warm the end of June which neither of my kids are a fan of, hopefully it won't make them cranky!

  • DsMom2020

NWM - It will be a nice vacation... Since my son got approval to see us in December and in February, I am hopeful that your son will get approval too! I believe my son did put on his chit that we would get a Covid test before flying.

    Welcome to Elina.

Is prototype done on the same base or is it different area?

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Right now prototype is all being done in Charleston/Goose Creek.  When B was in proto they also had it in Ballston Spa, NY (which is where he did it).

  • Chipmunk

Northwoodsmom - Prototype is all in GC currently as B'sNukeMom mentioned, however it is in a different location than where NNPTC is located at. It is farther away and they definitely need to be able to drive to that location as they will live off base.

  • WearsLargeHats

I saw the other day that the MTS Sam Rayburn is now in Norfolk for inactivation. Many of our sailors trained on the Rayburn. I imagine inactivating a vintage S5W reactor is an interesting bit of work.

NNSY Welcomes MTS Sam Rayburn for Inactivation - Seapower (seapower...

  • jes12joy

Northwoodsmom, Prototype is on NPTU which is down further from Power School. It is a different base with a different command structure so different CO.
  • Northwoodsmom

Thank you, I was just wondering where about it was in Goose Creek, thought while we were there we might check out rentals near Prototype, I knew it wasn't the same building as Power School.
