I don't think there are rentals near NPTU. It is way down the end of the road, deep in the Naval Weapons Station. My son rented a place up in Summerville. Not a bad drive really. One of his roommates didn't have a driver's license and would either get a ride or bicycle. That is a long way to bicycle but, now that I think about it, my son was bicycling for a while from halfway-to-Silverdale to Bremerton, which has to be about as far and not as flat.
NPTU is further down Redbank Road so instead of turning left at the light to get onto NNPTC they continue straight approximately another 1/2 mile or so to the gate of NPTU. Hope this helps.
Northwoodsmom - I am glad that you found it on Google maps. I am sorry that I didn't get back to you privately. I will say that if you are able to be with your son, there is a possibility that he could escort you on to the base and drive to NPTU. Our son was able to do that for us after he graduated from Power School. It was nice to have a visual of where he would be, even if all I saw was a building.
My son was happy with the outcome of ROM, said he will be in the next class finishing T-Track, have known few sailors in there and 2 bootcamp-mates that were hold back as well, a SLPO he also knows. He’s assigned in the office helping out some paperwork while on hold. His time won’t start not until late (since he must be with an officer to be in that office) and leaves early afternoon as well.
Unfortunately those 2 packages weren’t there anymore when he tried to claim last Friday. I felt so sorry for him so I booked a trip to visit him next month. Me and hubby got our first dose/vaccine last Saturday if that helps with the approval. He has some that needs to send so might as well bring face to face. Literally looking for a reason to see him (lol)
Gigi, good to hear he is happy with the outcome. Mine called and he started school today. It isn't power school but is called P-track it is a class that helps you with anything you struggled with before. Like I said my son struggled in calculus which made the other classes really tough. He said his overall score was to high and kept him from qualifying for the classes but now they placed him in them. They really do everything they can to help you to succeed. It was funny no one ever said anything about P-track before. He will be in there and then move back into Power School, maybe ours will end up together. I am really glad you will get that visit, can't wait till my visit but have to wait for school to finish. Prayers for your son that the time flies for him.
Ohh Northwoodsmom - I just got off the phone as well and he left me hanging and confused. I’ve heard about Alpha track and Bravo Track. Now you have a P-track. Veteran moms what are these tracks? My son told me that he won’t start fresh as they will credit all his exams and keep whatever gpa and was happy about it, I was like huh? I thought your gpa was low that’s why you had a mandatory hour, Said my exams and gpa were high it’s just that I was in Alpha track with mandatory hour.. hmm. Confusing galore..
Continued prayer for your son, don’t worry he will get it. My son loves math. He took BS Math then Avionics before bootcamp (but hates speech, writing, book report) I’ll ask if there are calculus tricks he can share, but your son is in the peak of PS it’s probably real hard by then. With God’s grace He will make it
Hi all. I am new to this group. My son will graduate from USMMA in June and then heading to Charleston. We don’t know exactly when yet. I am looking forward to learning from you all.
Gigi and Northwoodsmom - I am not familiar with the P-track and the A and B track either. I never heard my son mention these. I wonder if some of this has to do with the ROM set backs. Hopefully someone that had communication abilities with their sailor can check. Once our Nukes get in the fleet, sometimes we are back to the "No news is good news" phase.
Julie JW - Welcome and congratulations to your son. Most of us have enlisted sailors but there may be a few officer Nukes on the group. I know the officers go through Nuke training as well, but I am not familiar with what their schedule looks like. Maybe your son will be the one to share with you and you can pass it forward.
Feel free to ask any questions that you have.
Gigi- I am soo sorry that your son's packages were no longer at the mail center. That is sad!!
Julie JW - I understand!! When my son was at GC, he helped me write the Nuke A school daily schedule that is in the discussion up above. I added to it as he progressed through.
I honestly haven't thought about it, but I assume the officers have to find their own housing. You might find the discussion on Prototype housing helpful as it is mostly a discussion on various apartments in the area.
welcome Julie JW Congrats It has been a bit since my son was Charleston. I too have an officer so hope i can help you with questions. Is you LO going surface or subs? Mine is a sub guy and is currently on Shore duty in Groton CT teaching at SOBC ( sub officer basic course). The officer can live in officer housing on base but mine chose to live off on base. He rented a house with 3 other officers that he meet at OCS. The mom's here will have a lot of info on apt housing.
Topdog1p . Thanks so much for reaching out. Congrats to your son. Sounds like he is thriving! My son too is going subs. I think he is going for an apartment with some other officers. I havent gotten to talk to him for about a week and a half so not sure if he has any idea when he reports yet. From my limited knowledge, it could be as early as July so if that is the case, he won’t have much time after 6/19 to get everything ready and set up in Charleston. How long as your son been teaching? Did he have to do three years on subs first?

B’sNukeMom - had my 2nd vaccine last week. I had muscle aches and was very tired, but no other symptoms. From what I understand, it depends on which vaccine you received. I had Pfizer
Happy Weds Ladies! I haven't posted much but am checking in. I had my two vaccinations (Pfizer) and luckily I only had a sore arm with each one.
I am looking forward to tomorrow! Families are allowed to attend in-person, the Post-Deployment Awards Ceremony for the recent return of my sons sub. While on deployment, my son earned his Dolphins as well as the following awards and decorations to wear on his uniform: Battle Efficiency "E", Navy Expeditionary Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and Arctic Service Ribbon. Also during this deployment, the sailors earned these honors: Order of the Golden Dragon (crossing the International Date Line), Order of Magellan (circumnavigating the Globe), Order of the Rock (transiting the Strait of Gibraltar) and Blue Nose (operations in the Arctic Region). What a nice birthday present for me!!
Welcome to the new members. This is such a fantastic group. I don't know what I would have done without the information and the support of these ladies during my sons time in GC! It was definitely a ride.
Hello everyone, I haven't really visited the group in a while, I'm not good with online stuff... I'm hoping someone can help. My son is reporting in tomorrow in Norfolk. He just arrived there tonight and has no idea what he should be doing. He has a car full of all his stuff from his apartment in Charleston. Does anyone have any advice I can pass on to him?
ShellyMarie - it should say in his orders where he is to report. He should check in with his ship and hopefully someone will direct him as to where he should be. There is always someone on watch on the ships.
KayCee - always nice to hear from you. Sounds like a very successful deployment for your son! BZ to him on his awards. Enjoy the ceremony tomorrow - how exciting that will be!
KayCee - Congratulations to your son!!! I am so happy for you and I know how proud you are of him. They have done a lot of traveling in his sub from the awards you mentioned. Mine won't be anywhere near having the same thing. And Happy almost Birthday!!
ShellyMarie - I am glad he figured out what he needed to do. My son is in Norfolk as well but on a different ship.
B'sNukeMom, how's the 2nd vaccine feeling today? I was fortunate enough to get the J&J so only one. Felt crappy the next morning, slept for 4 hours and was feeling better. My husband had zero reaction to it. Hope you're doing well with it!
JayDee - nothing but a sore arm today. I literally was thinking I'd have a headache, fatigue or something (hubby got all of that), but nothing. One of my good friends who's been involved in COVID studies at her hospital said I could still get fatigue later today and if I do to just go home and go to bed! So we'll see how the day progresses. It's been 22 hours now. I think my neck and back feel a little stiff but they usually do from sitting at a computer all day....so who knows lol!
Gigi, this what I have found out about Power Track, It usually is for Sailors who might of had a hard time with certain subjects like math after A school they go into a program known as Power Prep that is a program that gives them a little help before Power School starts. Hi Ladies! We are going to visit my son at the end of June. I know several of you have been there before and was wondering the best place to stay close to the beach (maybe downtown Charleston) or on the beach.
khryse, I am heading down the last week of June also. The first time we stayed at a really nice Airbnb very near base but it was booked. We tried to get one near the beach but they were a little pricey for my budget, we wanted to stay around a thousand for the week. We picked a place right in the middle to give us easy access to all the things we wanted to do. We also are only 20 minutes from the base. We wanted to ba able to walk to restaurants and it had to have a pool. I don't know what this place will be like but we rented a apartment called The Factory, it was near Park Circle with trendy restaurants. Hopefully it will be as safe as our first place.
Hello Northwoodsmom- thank you for researching about A & B track. Son called again, now in a very end barracks about half mile away from the Galley. He will be there for 2 weeks.
Khryse - during our first visit in August, me and hubby stayed in Wild Dune Isle of Palm for 2 days, then moved to a 2br and 2ba with full kitchen at Residence Inn Marriott 90 Ripley Point this was then my son joined us from Fri to Sun (to get an approval he needs his own room and bath). He missed home food so I needed a kitchen. Our second visit was in November, also stayed at Residence Inn Marriott Mount Pleasant also 2br/2ba with kitchen. I Chose Marriott over Airbnb bec of the cancelation policy with full refund even the day before of arrival. Hope this helps. Is your son/daughter also in Power School?
(Btw he’s home during Christmas stand down for 2 weeks) I am planning to visit him the end of May (Memorial weekend)
BsNukeMom - glad you didn’t get any flu like or any unexplainable side effect. Hubby and I had our first Moderna shot last Saturday and the next one will be on May 14th. Just in time for my visit by the end of May. Hope son will get approved. I didn’t have any side effect and praying my second dose as well.
Hi Khryse!! Glad to hear that you are going to get a chance to visit your sailor. We always stayed at the Days Inn right there on Red Banks Road - but it is not everyone's favorite including my husband's but the price was good, we had breakfast back then and it was close to NNPTC. Khyrse we stayed at a cute Airbnb in mount pleasant - very clean and nice. Photo attached of patio. Well located. Also stayed on James island in a cute beach shack - was dirty and had cockroaches. Also stayed at a residence inn. Not so nice but for that trip the navy said no Airbnb allowed. So we choose a hotel with separate room for sailor.
I had a little chills and backache following 2nd Moderna. Sore arm with both doses. Spoke to a patient (I’m a nurse) - her mom died last week within 2 days of second moderna dose of heart failure. She was 68 and healthy. Glad I’m vaccinated but more glad not to be that bad statistic.
Congrats Kaycee!! So many accomplishments for your son!!!

Khryse - 90 Ripley Point is in the historic district while the other one is closer to the beach. Both 30mins (at least) away from the base. I couldn’t find a 2br with kitchen hotel available on Memorial Weekend. Congratulations in advance to your Sailor!!
Khryse - we rented A 1300 square-foot condo in the wild dunes area of Isle of Palms using VRBO twice. We absolutely loved it. It was about two or three blocks from the beach. The beach was absolutely beautiful. The condo had the kitchen and living room in the middle and a very large bedroom on either side with its own bathroom in each of them. One bedroom had two queen beds in the other bedroom had a king bed.
