New Adventures - Congratulations to your sailor on passing his exam!!. Oh I know how excited you are to see him soon. I am glad he took the news of the pup well.

thesuperm72 - Hopefully things will work out for your kids but it sounds like they are aware of the possible separation ahead of them.

The summer schedule has started out busy as it always was in the past with my kids, except for last year. It is good to be back in our "groove" but that means I am out the door early and home late and haven't been on this site much or able to visit with my friends here much. I hope all are well.

    Any info from experienced helpful.

Sailor just got hard orders.  Report date is weeks away partially because he finished a bit early.  The orders have a release from NPTU date but..... they have been told the general rule is upto 30 days before report date you can take leave.   Is this true?  How likely is it that they can get the release date moved up and come home?

Part of why i ask is there is going to be an actual graduation and we are trying to figure out if we can go or should go.   If he is coming home and will get to be here a bit then maybe not.  He does not care.  It is tough time for me to leave at work and we still have another senior dog at home, my other son's, who can not go to a kennel and needs almost 24/7 attention or at least someone in the house.

I would love to actually get a bit of time in Charleston.  I would love to be at a graduation since all the others were canceled, even the live stream was conclude.  Only my mom is available to stay with dog and that would be hard on her as dog gets up a few times each night and falls and has to be picked up a few times a day.

    So conflicted!

  • Northwoodsmom

New Adventure, I only can hold you up in prayer for this situation. I know how much they become a big part of ones family and how hard it is. My husband actually took a week off of work to care for ours while my daughter and I go down to visit our Sailor. Is there anyway you could crate the dog at night? I don't know what the prototype graduation is like, maybe one of the other Mom's can let you know if it would be worth the trip. Prayers!

  • ProudOfK

New Adventures - The only thing that I can tell you is that our son did get to spend about one month at home between prototype and reporting to his duty station.

  • 3B'smom

New Adventures: He may be required to attend graduation. I could especially see this being the case if this is the first post- COVID ceremony. Also, he may not want to count on his checkout date. In my son’s experience, that was hard to nail down. I would say that the best plan is to talk to his SLPO (I think it’s still an SLPO in Proto).  Also, if he gets 30 days that include his travel time to his new duty station.

  • Chipmunk

New Adventures - Do you know if they are doing Prototype graduation at the USS Yorktown as they have in the past?  This one was a big deal and then the families could stay and tour the USS Yorktown. When my son graduated April 2019 ? (loosing track already) they had two graduation ceremonies in the morning for all of Prototype.

Also, they have their orders but there is still stuff that has to get completed before they can leave. And yes, the 30 days includes travel to duty station.  As for the pets, that is a hard one. I also concur with 3B's mom on checking with his SLPO or chief.

    Hi 3B'sMom & ProudOfK !!!

It would be great if they get graduations opened back up again, so that families can visit and we can visit about those things again.

  • CSW

Wow graduation at Patriot's Point would be awesome. Even if they don't have graduation there you need to go. It's worth it!

BZ to all who have passed the tests and are headed to the fleet!

  • New Adventures

I do believe it is at Patriots Point but that is from other moms on FB.  He has to know if we are coming and tell his command by Friday.   He will be there either way.   I will have to work remote at least 1/2 each day as if it year end for us.

I have been scratching me head trying to come up with a combination of people who might, maybe be available to come a stay at the house.  We can not hire a service since we both currently work out the the house and there is confidential stuff here.  She is 16.5 with arthritis, "doggie" dementia, and incontanence.  Such a fun combo.  Heart is strong as an 8 year old and blood work is that way too as of last week.  Meds 4 times a day. She has been declining since last August but hubby and her "boy" are not ready.  The slow decline and cognitive stuff is hard to deal with and even harder to know when.  Our sailers dog had cancer and while it seemed like a long time it was only 4 months from the first changes to saying good bye.  He acted like a puppy up until then even though he turned 16 in Feb.  His teeth was the only way you knew he was old.

Thanks for letting me share.  I have not said any of this out loud.

Good Morning all and Happy Wednesday!

We've been in the middle of a major heatwave here in SoCal but might finally be cooling down a bit in the next few days.  We leave for Michigan tomorrow!  Can't wait!

NewAdventures - I hope you can work something out so you can make it to the graduation.  B graduated prototype in New York and they had graduation at a community center.  Nothing fancy but we were able to go and take pictures.  I understand your concern when you have a furbaby to consider.  We are very fortunate in this trip to Michigan - our youngest son's  (who is in Nebraska) GF is staying at our house for 10 days to watch our dogs.  One of ours is older so she has some issues too.

I'll be checking in while I'm gone but probably not as often as I normally do.  You all behave while I'm gone lol!

  • CSW

Safe trip! You're headed into a heatwave in the mid west!

  • WearsLargeHats

NewAdventures, I would encourage your sailor to read his orders carefully. There is typically a detach-by and a report-no-later-than date, and there will often be an explicit authorization to take leave (in addition to any travel leave) in between those dates. The actual detach is negotiated with the current command.
They should plan on reporting to the new command a couple days early. They will also be assigned a sponsor to help them get situated and oriented.
When my son left NNPTC for Sub School (long story), he had 2 weeks to report up there. He visited home for a few days (it was on the way, sort of), then we drove up together to visit my sister who lives a few towns down from New London, then he reported in early.
When he went from Groton to Pearl Harbor, he took a couple weeks leave to visit home. I think he had to pay the difference in air travel.
That was a few years ago. He says he has 52 days of leave time built up, if he can ever schedule the time to use it.

  • New Adventures

    Hi All,

Quick update.  Hubby is going and I am staying home.  Sadly it means I will not get any pics as I am the one that takes pics but the cost and complication of my work and Tasha just got to be too much.  Hubby never travels with out me- or at least not in over 20 years so this will be interesting.  I still booked everything.

I have not had my house to myself for more than a few hours in 6 years, since his moved his office home.  I am actually looking forward to that part.

    Have a great week end!

  • CSW

    New Adventures,

Make hubby promise to take phone photo at least.BTW there usually is a photographer there and they will either post to Facebook or share with sailors so have your sailor share.

  • Northwoodsmom

New Adventures, big hugs to you. Life seems to get in the way of what our hearts really want. My daughter and I are heading down at the end of the month without my husband, his company is really busy and he won't fly. I do pray your hubby will take alot of pictures, that is so tough, you will be in my prayers.

  • Chipmunk

New Adventures - Glad to hear that you came up with a game plan for seeing your sailor. All the best for all of you.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hi ladies - made it to Michigan!  B's birthday is today and we spent the day at Higgins Lake.  It was beautiful out there.  Tomorrow we are going to a Lansing Lugnuts game for Father's Day.  We've done some things around their house and still have a list of things to do lol!  Having a great time so far.

New Adventures - I will keep my fingers crossed you get some pictures!

B'sNukeMom - enjoy your family time!!

Good Morning everyone!! I don't have an arsenal of memes waiting to post like B'sNukeMom does, but my husband was reading this article before work and so I asked for the link.

It has some funny pictures and a little bit of insight into what your sailor is doing!! As well as a tribute to our Dads. Enjoy!

Good Morning everyone and Happy Tuesday!  We are enjoying our visit with B&C!  Went to a Lansing Lugnut game (minor league baseball team).  Have put up 3 ceiling fans, put in a peephole, started building the garden planters, put in under counter lights in the kitchen, got the shelving to install in the garage and over the laundry....and lots of other little odds & ends.  It's been very productive.  Also went to Higgins Lake which was lots of fun.  And we celebrated B's bday and Father's Day.  Having a great time!

    B'sNukeMom - How much fun!!!

  • New Adventures

B'sNukeMom-  What fun.  I went to a game there the year the opened that park.  The mascot is a hoot.  Enjoy the visit.

  • DsMom2020

Hi Ladies. Haven't been commenting much but, as always, enjoy reading all your comments!

Chipmunk - enjoyed "Top 11 ways...."

B'Nukes - Visit looks like a lot of fun and sooooo productive too.

NWM - I'm sorry your husband can't be there too. I hope your son can come home soon to see his dad.

New Adventures - I'm sorry you could not be there too, but at least your husband will get some quality time with your sailor! I hope you get photos!!

Good News: I saw something on the NNPTC FB page. Starting July 30, family can attend A School Graduation. Not sure who on this page that affects, but such good news.

AND EVEN BIGGER NEWS THAT I HOPE AFFECTS YOU GUYS TOO... I just found out that my son is coming home (to California) for a 4 day weekend over the 4th of July!!! He will be starting Power School this week. His good friend texted me and commented about how happy I must be about having D come home for the 4th.... It was supposed to be a surprise and now I have to keep it to myself!! Friend felt terrible giving up the surprise, but I assured him I won't tell the rest of the family and will "act' surprised. I can hardly contain myself!! On Father's Day, my son casually asked what we are doing for the 4th and mentioned he had 4 days off. I said I was sorry I could not come for a visit, and he said not to worry, he'd just hang with his buddies. If I didn't know he was coming, I would not have caught the little twinkle in his eyes!!

I really hope some of you other moms get some "surprise" (or not surprise) visits too!!

  • khryse

    Hi Ladies

I love reading all of your post!

We are headed to visit this week as my son was set to graduate power school but he didn’t quite make it. He grade was very close passing but they told him they were going to roll him back. He is a little disappointed but is thankful for another chance. Please pray for him as he sees his friends graduating and moving on this week.
My husband is going to be making his favorite hot wings, so that should cheer him up!!

We are super excited to see him and hug him!!

  • khryse

I promise I do know English…sorry for typos. Haha!

  • somar

Just spoke with S. Took PS comps this morning. Will get his score later today. He is nervous but confident. I leave Thursday to go see him. First visit to SC.

Khryse - sending prayers for your sailor.

  • Northwoodsmom

khryse, my son is in about the same boat about being rolled back. I know ii feels awful but my son is doing so much better. I think by going back over the stuff they feel more confident in themselves. He is enjoying Power School this time alot more than the first time. I like to think God had His hand in this. A School graduations opened up to parents and I am very hopeful Power School will soon follow. " I might get to see my son graduated something"! It would be a extra Blessing to see it in person.

  • Chipmunk

Somar and Khryse - Good to hear from you both!  I am sorry that I wasn't on earlier today to respond or see your notes. Thoughts and prayers for your sailors!!

D'sMom - so excited for you!!

Northwoodsmom - hopeful that you will have some special memories with your sailor and a graduation.

  • Chipmunk

Khryse - I just noticed your "typo" post. I am learning, especially the more I do use a smart phone, how easy those occur.!

Somar - Hoping you have had a good report from your sailor!!

  • JayDee659

Good morning ladies.  Sounds like things are returning to "normal" at NNPTC.  Happy to hear that some of you are getting to see your Nukes and attend graduations.

I just had a surprise visit from my Nuke and her Nuke hubby.  They were traveling to an event for his family and stopped to see us and spend the  night.  This is the first time they've been to see us in our new home.  We grilled out. spent some time in the pool and watched the hockey playoffs together.  Before they left, we had lunch on the beach and watched the dolphins.  Time was short but it was wonderful.  They will be stopping to have lunch with us on their way back north, then only two months until we go visit them and help them move to my daughters new duty station.  Hooray for shore duty!!!!

My SIL showed me some cool videos of his being taken off his submarine last week to head home for leave.  Very cool!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hi all - Happy Wednesday!  Still doing things around the house with B&C - it's exciting seeing everything coming together.  Today we went to a Detroit Tiger's game.  Had a lot of fun and able to check another major league stadium off our list.  More "honey-do's" tomorrow and then youngest flies back to Nebraska tomorrow evening.  Time is flying by lol!

JayDee - a surprise visit - yay!  How fun watching dolphins.

Somar - how did comp go?  Enjoy your visit.

kyryse - sorry to hear about power school but thankful for another chance!  You also enjoy your visit!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

  • JayDee659

B'sNukeMom looks like you are having a great time! Enjoy!

  • Chipmunk

JayDee659 - How much fun!! A surprise visit from your sailors!! My daughter would love to live close enough to a beach where there were dolphins!!

    B'sNukeMom - enjoying your pictures!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hi all - Happy Thursday (almost Friday here).  Can't believe our vacation is almost over.  Youngest headed back to Nebraska today and we head home on Saturday.  Still have lots to do on our "honey-do" list but feeling good about what we have accomplished.  Make sure you wear your RED tomorrow!

B’sNuke Really nice pictures!  Looks like you’re having a great time with your family!!

  • Wink5

Nebraska is happy to have N back!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Wink5 - he'll only be back for a few weeks and then he heads back to CA.  His contract with UNL was only for 2 years and it's up already!  The pandemic sure messed things up.  He's been applying at other colleges and really wants to end up back in CA so we are keeping our fingers crossed something comes through for him.  We were really hoping for another visit to NE but it just wasn't in the cards.  His GF flies in to NE on 7/6 and then they are road tripping back to CA....

ProudOfK - we have  been having a wonderful time!  It's been so nice to spend time with them in their new home.

We fly home tomorrow afternoon - our 10 days sure went by fast!  But, we did get a lot done around their house.  I need to get home to rest lol!

  • Chipmunk

Heather - How are you doing? You are one of our newer members and I have been busy with a lot of things, so if you need something please don't hesitate to post here or reach out to me if you need something. I will respond to private messages or comments on my profile page.

B'sNukeMom - I am so glad that you all were able to go see the kids and help them get things accomplished in their new house. That is one thing I miss about my sailor. He and I connected a lot better when it came to "projects" and what I needed help with. My husband is good, but with his work schedule we are limited on days or times. My son was around a lot more and so we could focus on things more - some times.

  • Chipmunk

I am so happy to hear that things are starting to open up again at NNPTC!! It will still be a bit before RTC is open for PIR but the hopeful excitement of those with kids leaving for GL and asking about hotels and such is nice. We will be doing a lot more of that here as well soon hopefully.

I so much enjoyed our visits to GC and Charleston, I hope many of you are still able to do so. I have missed replying to some of you as you have posted but it is always good to hear from everyone.

Something to keep in mind about your Nukes once  they are in the fleet. Depending on where they are at, they will spend long hard hours at a job that may not get a lot of recognition or attention. When you aren't hearing from them much in A school, PS, or Prototype, prepare yourself for maybe hearing less once they are in the fleet. Especially if yours is going sub. There is a lot that we won't or can't know about what their job is but learning whatever you can about what they do helps to at least have a sense of their mission. It can give you something to talk about and encourage them when others aren't and also to know why they might just need time to recharge when you want them to call or talk to you.

I don't know if they have taken any of the A school students to the USS Yorktown this last year or not for a tour, but when we visited for graduation or son was so excited to take us to the Yorktown so he could show us the engine room and even though it was not nuclear, there were things that he could show us and explain with how that one worked that gave us a sense of what he would be doing. The pride was so evident in his voice. Now that he is in the fleet and working, even if he can't say much I can grasp the enormity of what he does.

I would encourage you to go to the library and look for books on subs or even or nuclear aircraft carries. If you can't find info there ask me, I have some older OOP (out of print) books that have information in them about how they work.

NewAdventures - you're right - the mascot at the Lugnut's game is a hoot.  Here's my DIL with him.
