I've been gone a while so lots of news! B'sNuke, no more NE visits. I hope N feels like his time here was fruitful and that many doors open ahead.
JayDee, HOOYAH! Congrats to all who are moving forward with their naval careers.
I was in SC for the 4th with my sailor and family. It was wonderful with lots of fireworks and lots of time with the grands. My sailor has 4 kids. They're doing a little fixing up believing they will probably be moving once my son separates from the navy. Feels to me like these last months of navy life are flying by but I'm not sure my son feels the same. I'm learning lots about how things work when people leave the military. He's getting all his medical and dental stuff done, getting tons of paperwork filled out and signed, stuff like that. I'm grateful the navy does such a good job preparing them for life on the other side.
I've loved all the pictures and stories of happy reunions and good things happening. Keep them coming, Sea Sisters!
NancyJo - Yes, he learned a lot while at UNL! Now it's just trying to find another coaching job - hopefully in CA! I'm glad you had a nice visit with the family and the little's. Charleston is such a fun place to visit - it will be interesting to see where they end up - and where you'll get to visit lol!

Hello everyone! Just wanted to let you know that I am back to BC page (left a question there) I have 2 SRs in there my niece and her boyfriend. Whoohoo for these young brave kids!!
My youngest made it home from NE last night. He was concerned as to whether or not his car would make it and it did! He and his GF took about a week driving - tried to make a little mini vacation out of it lol!
Gigi - that's exciting that your niece and her boyfriend have joined the Navy - please be sure to tell their family to join the N4M site too!
BsNukeMom - Thank God your youngest and GF (and his car) made it safely back in CA! Did you know that we lived in Omaha, NE (Pacific Apartments if I remember it right) for a year! My husband’s job, we joined him since it’s a year project and my Nuke studied at Loveland Elementary his 4th Grade (along Pacific Hwy)
And thank you!! Yes I did tell them to join the BC page. I was not surprise for my niece’s bf to join since his dad was a retired Navy, but my niece…we were all surprised! My mom (her grandma) was the one crying non-stop.
So i need a little confidence, I was watching , trying to learn about Power School and everything else associated with Nuke school. I read something disturbing about Nuke people, that the suicide rate is high. Can anyone share any stories about their Sons/ Daughters experience in A school? I am freaking out a little and wondering if anyone was in my shoes?
I was worried the pressure would be too much for my son who started to do poorly in college after his first year. He is in power school now and has loved every minute of A school and Power school. He is happier and more successful than ever before. All the same, I told him I am immensely proud if him, but If at any time he does poorly or decides it is not for him, I’d be so happy to have him home, and know it would be a new chapter and opportunity to do something different, and to please never feel shame. I am just proud he made the choice to try and the Navy thought enough of him to enroll him in the Nuke program!!
Good Morning mamabearto3 and DsMom2020 - my apologies, I have been really busy and not able to be on the site much this week.
DsMom2020 - I really like what you said to your son. I have the impression that many of our Nuke sailors feel pressure from their parents to perform well and Nuke school and rating is not necessarily a good fit for everyone. But letting our kids know we ae still proud of them is important.
mamabearto3 - I am not one to sugar coat things, neither am I one to share others private struggles. Yes, the suicide rate is high among Nukes, I don't spend time looking at statics but it is also high in the military in general, to my knowledge. I like very much what DsMom2020 shared with her son. My sailor and I talked a lot, but we had been able to build that relationship prior to his leaving and we were his lifeline. In fact, in Prototype he was asked by a Chief, "What do you do to decompress or deal with stress?" He replied, "I call and talk to my family." - The chief said, "What about when you are on a ship and out to sea?" - Recently my son, during some tough scheduling time, asked me to send him a picture of something that made me smile.
It is good for our sailors to know they can talk to a chaplain. Currently my son is in the fleet, and there have been comments made reminding the sailors, the families, to reach out and seek help if they are struggling. It may not seem like it is mentioned as much at NNPTC, but the sailors are encouraged to keep an eye on their fellow sailors. My son tended to like to stay close to NNPTC and not go out with others to do things much and I think some of them were concerned about him, as he shared with me. But he was also under 21 and did not want to end up in a situation of having to deal with others possibly drinking. He also, knew his little brother at home needed any attention that he could give him so Saturday morning so they Skyped a lot while he did his laundry.
Each sailor has to find their groove and as much as you can help him know to keep communication open with you, the better your mama heart will be. And just be frank with him. Mine would text me goodnight, just to let me know he was good. But he would also call me and ask me to pray, because he had heard ambulance sirens in the BEQs. And it isn't just among the students that there are reports of suicide, so it is important to help our sailors as we can, to respect them when they ask to rerate or separate, even if not until after their enlistment is up.
Unfortunately, there are suicides and I don't think there is a mama, father or other loved one on here that has not had a concern for their sailor whether at NNPTC or out in the fleet.
Just a reminder for any of our newer members. When your sailor gets ready to move from Power School to Prototype, they will need a vehicle for transportation to and from their housing to where Prototype is located at. And they will move off NNPTC and need to find housing on their own.
B'sNukeMom - Glad N & gf arrived safely.
Gigi - Glad to have you chatting here and also back on BC Mom!
mamabearto3, I am one of those moms who's kid struggles. I will be honest with you, it is worst for us than it is for them. My heart breaks for him and as a parent you never want to see them struggle in anything. My son has been pushed back because of his struggles in Algebra. His instructors have been great in supporting him and my last visit he was in great spirits. He just loves learning and when I asked him if he regrets his decision he told me h__l no, the Navy takes good care of me mom, so stop worrying.
I know not everyone believes in God but that is the only way I am able to handle this whole situation. When my son left I handed him over to God. I can not fix all of his problems but I have someone that can and believe me I have him on speed dial. That is the best thing I can do for my son is to keep him in constant prayer. If Nuclear isn't the path my Lord wants my son on He will change the direction in which he should go. I am standing firm on that.
The Navy has been amazing for my son and they go out of their way to help them through the ups and downs but they need to ask for help. Let yours know that there is no shame in asking for the much needed help when they are struggling. The sooner they learn that the better off they will be.
Prayers to you and your son. I am here to help if you need anything .
B'sNuke, so glad they made it back. It's always a little worrisome when the car isn't in the best shape. Now for the next step.
mamabearto3, good advice here so far. It's hard to be a worrier. My son and I have talked about this and he felt like the people who commit suicide might have had issues no matter what they chose to do. Some have a harder time coping than others. Make sure your sailor hears from you that you love and support him no matter what. Those conversations are so valuable.
Gigi! I work for the school district that includes Loveland Elementary! That's a lovely old building right on Pacific Street. What a small world! I hope your time in NE was good. I love it here but I know it's not everybody's cup of tea. ;D
mamabearto3: Yes, there is a higher incidence of suicide. As a mom, that is terrifying. I think that the most important thing that you can do is let your sailor know that it is ok to struggle and ok to fail. Being assigned extra study time, rolled back, or even re-rated is not the end of the world. And while importance is place on class rankings at times, in the fleet the most important thing is that the sailors can do their jobs. No one is asking them about how many extra hours they had to put in, or if they had to retake something.
Being a nuke is not for everyone and getting through the pipeline is not easy. Just give lots of love and support. And this group is here to support you.
Thank you all ladies!! Thank you for the stories and being here to answer questions about what is in store for my Son. I knew that this will be the hardest thing that my Son will go through so far in his life, I also know how determined he is and when he wants something he goes for it full throttle. Like some of you said, sometimes they have set backs and have to EXTRA study hours, that's what I personally think will aggravate him the most out of everything. He will get 110% support from home, so I hope that we can at least help encourage him as we have always done, even if he decides that maybe this journey is not for him. Whatever he needs to get through he knows we will be behind him. His Sisters are not in the Military but AP College courses are not what I call "FUN" either and we as a family have had a lot of late night sessions, just to encourage our daughters on tests and Mid terms and Finals. A lot of crying and some laughter and a lot of STRESS. Most of the time we get a very excited I got a 98% or whatever the results are, then they move on to the next Chapter. So I thank you guys for helping me feel a little better that, YES this is going to be hard but I know he/we can handle what may come his way. I applaud all the Navy Nukes who have become before our Son and am very proud of your Sons and Daughters accomplishments!! They are all amazing! Now to go color all my Earned grey hairs. Lol! Have a beautiful day ladies, may we all have a great day!! <3
mamabearto3 - and not to add more worry but the nuke pipeline is one whole set of stress, then they hit the fleet and it's another whole set of stress. Having friends/family to talk with and an outlet for the stress is very important.
Just remind them that no matter what happens at the end of the day it isn't the end of the world. There's always tomorrow.
B'sNukeMoM Thank you, I appreciate any information I can get! I feel better knowing I can ask questions to all you ladies, who have been there before me. As an adult I know the challenges of life and raising kids to become adults, I am almost a Grandma, YIKES. This, this military/Navy life is all new to me, I need all the help I can get. My Dad was in the French Military (LONG TIME AGO) He passed away more than 13 years ago, he never wanted to talk to me about his days in the Military, He always said "You don't want to hear about all that." Now I understand why, but when you are a kid , it never accrued to me why it was so hard to talk about. My Husbands Dad was in Vietnam and he doesn't like to talk about it either. So, I am open to any information you all give me, So I can at least try and be hopeful/wise on helping my Son on his Journey. This is all scary for me.

pjb2500 - Welcome Aboard!! We are glad you are here! Be sure to come share with us where your loved one is in their Navy journey.
Mine has been in for more than half his enlistment now and is out in the fleet. It is funny, some things I can say, that just seems like yesterday, but others things I don't. His time at NNPTC now seems so long ago, especially after this last year when there were so many disconnects, especially with his time in the fleet now. But also I remember so clearly him telling me things that I shared in the discussion above.
Please don't hesitate to ask any questions and if your loved one is just starting out in BC, we would love to have you join the BC Moms group .
Big Kid reports that he was finally able to finish off the last bit for senior in rate and he earned his ESWS this go around. So glad they are back. We should be able to see him this weekend when we celebrate our 25th anniversary. So much to celebrate!
It's been a tough day on my family, a year ago we lost my Mom. Tried to get my Dad out of the house but he wants to be left alone. Stopped to see how my sister was doing, she was exhausted after spending the weekend with her new granddaughter and 1 year old granddaughter. She struggles and was on oxygen today. Her lungs are so damaged after having Covid.
Happy Anniversary to B & C !! Boy the time does fly even when it is a tough year!
Happy Anniversary to you and your hubby 3B'sMom -Congratulations to your sailor!! And that is awesome on his ESWS - I just found out this morning that mine passed his test for ESWS but not sure if there is more to it than that. And finishing off the last of his senior in rate - that is great!! I know they are glad to be home. May your time together be relaxing.
Northwoodsmom - Big hugs to you!! That first year, was hard after my mom passed, it was hard after my dad as well and his I remember as it marked by a military holiday, but my moms after four years now and so much going on, I get the day blurred in my memory, the same with her memorial date but her face and her love never leaves! My prayers for your father and your sister.

B'sNukeMom - Yes, baby hugs are wonderful, although, I have to sort of scoop her up from behind and get in a hug and raspberries. She is 1 1/2 yrs old now but with all of the ROM she is still very shy. None of mine were like that, even her mother, so it is hard to have to spend a day or two just letting her warm back up to us again. But it is so much fun to watch her and play with her, I don't get to see her enough!

Stopped to see how my sister was doing, she was exhausted after spending the weekend with her new granddaughter and 1 year old granddaughter. She struggles and was on oxygen today. Her lungs are so damaged after having Covid.

Good Evening everyone!!
Gigi - Thank you!
Happy Anniversary to B & C !! Boy the time does fly even when it is a tough year!
Happy Anniversary to you and your hubby 3B'sMom - Congratulations to your sailor!!
