So my son is driving me crazy. I have been asking him to find out which Covid test is required for my non-vaccinated family member to attend graduation. The requirement is either a vaccination record or a negative Covid test. The question is:

do we need a PCR test takes three days for the results,

a rapid test from a testing center,

or will a rapid test from a physicians office suffice (least expensive). I’ve been asking him to find out for two weeks. How do I find out??? Graduation in under two weeks!

  • Chipmunk

DsMom have you tried to reach out to the ombudsman? Sorry, I am headed to bed and will be unavailable tomorrow. Do you know how to find that information. Look up either on FB or google NNPTC, one of the pages should have the ombudsman info there.

  • Chipmunk

Question - I probably need some assistance from those of you pre-Covid. Did any of you that are still following have your Nuke get to GC mid-December of their A-School? I am not sure how Holiday shut down might affect those whose sailors have just arrived at GC. In the past, were they still able to get an approved leave chit? Or did they have to stay at GC. They would not have had time to get their UIs done so they can stand watches, but they also would not have been there long enough to likely class up?

We have some new members in BC Mom group who will have sailors arriving at GC around the middle of Dec and are wondering if their sailors will get leave. I am not sure of all of the current traveling restrictions for any of or sailors there or if anyone knows the answer to my question. Thanks!!

  • DsMom2020

Chipmunk - thanks for Ombudsman tip!! Heard back quickly. Thinks doctors office Covid test probably fine as close to departure as possible but says things change quickly and best source is for the sailor to ask SLPO.

  • New Adventures

    Hi All,

My sailor is now in the fleet but on shore for now. It was a rough transition at first but all is good now and they seem happy again.

It is that time for holiday gift ideas and I thought I would share mine. He might be going to sea, or might not, anytime, after being "lent" to another crew, maybe.  He lives in the barracks and says the food is better then at GC. He has a full ridge and microwave and no roommate.  All that said he does not want anything because he does not want to have to store it or move it.

What do you get him and ship to him?

Gift cards to the local grocery or his fav coffee shop. But my "big" idea was to try to make things that are semi shelf stable and he could take if at sea and enjoy if not. I dehydrated and vacuumed sealed apples, pineapple, mango, pears, bananas, lemon, and tangerines. The last two are mostly to add to water for flavor. The pineapple is like candy and the banana is not far.  I also made fruit leathers.

I found bags for the vacuum sealer with zip locks for once opened and other smaller ones with easy open tabs.  I opened a few and found that the full vacuum sealing makes the fruit stick together.  Yet it means they take far less space and are more shelf stable.

DsMom2020 - Glad you got some information!!

New Adventures - that sounds like a great idea!! One thing my son wanted was some wrapped hard candy to be able to suck on, like peppermints or such to help keep his mouth moistened. He also wanted small bottles of hand sanitizer but I wasn't allowed to ship that.

    Hi all - Happy Tuesday!

B&C fly in tonight for a week - I'm so excited.  They already had their connector flight cancelled and re-scheduled by the airline yesterday.  So instead of getting in at 9pm they now arrive at 11pm.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed nothing changes again today!

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

B'sNuke, I'm so excited for you! Prayers they get home ok. When we were planning the Italy trip flight adjustments happened pretty regularly. The airlines are still getting used to the new normal. Don't worry though. One way or another they'll get home.

  • Chipmunk

B'sNuke - Staying hopeful that all will go well with the kid's flight!! My daughter and boyfriend went to Florida earlier this month and their flight out was fine but the one home was changed. They got home a little later than planned but also did not have to be at the airport quite as soon, so their drivers were able to sleep in!!

  • CSW

MomofJoseph when my sailor came out of bootcamp the day of graduation they went to get their travel arrangements because they left for the airport like at 2:00am the morning after graduation.  I gave him a notecard to write down the flight number and time so we could meet at the airport and we could return his cell phone and bring him any other personal items he wanted that would fit in his duffel.  We sent some additional items after he was settled in GC.  At that time the USO arranged  family passes to go to the gate with the sailors to wait with him but I don't know if they allow that now.

  • MomofJoseph

    Thank you, CSW!

  • Chipmunk

MomofJoseph - my understanding is that they are still not transporting the new sailors to A school via commercial flights, so it could just be that they will give more specific information after PIR. I also sent you a PM.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Well they aren't arriving today now :(  Airlines rebooked the connector flight and then the rebooked flight was cancelled.   The airlines was going to have them arriving in Chicago tonight and not leaving until Thursday morning - and arriving in CA at 3pm!  They were going to sit over a whole day in Chicago! Luckily they found out before they boarded the first flight and chose not to take the flight.  So they are going home and starting over tomorrow morning. Ugh......we had so much to do tomorrow to get ready for Thanksgiving and as of right now I don't even know when tomorrow they are arriving!  Fingers crossed everything works out tomorrow.  Ugh this is frustrating!

  • MomofJoseph

B'sNukeMom, I know that is so frustrating. Will pray that they get home SOON!

  • Northwoodsmom

B'sNukeMom, wondering if the strong wind warnings had anything to do with the flight cancellation. I am just east of Michigan and the winds were just horrible. Prayers they make it there tomorrow!

  • Chipmunk

B'sNukeMoM - Ohhh My - Yes, so so frustrating!!!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

I've talked to B a couple of times - he said they told them there was "a problem with the flight crew" in Chicago - whatever that means lol!

    Good Morning and Happy Wednesday!

Well, they should be arriving at 9pm tonight.  Fingers crossed everything works out.  I went ahead and ran to the market last night and got everything they needed - boy were the shelves bare!  I guess it's a good thing I didn't wait to go when they arrived.

I hope everyone has a nice Thanksgiving.

  • Gigi

B’sNuke- Praying for their safe arrival tonight. We’re driving to GC tomorrow, we should be on the road at 4am! Happy Thanksgiving everyone and I’m so thankful for y’all.

  • Northwoodsmom

Gigi, may the Lord wrap you in his arms adding extra protection as you travel. Just in case you see a Wisconsin boy give him a hug, it might be my son. Have a Blessed trip full of Love!

  • Chipmunk

B'sNukeMom - Hopeful all goes well with their flight!!

Gigi and others - Safe Travels.

Northwoodsmom  - I am sure you are missing yours. I hope you and the rest of your family have a nice time together. I don't think you posted your cupcake picture here, but did you get those served to the kiddos? They looked so yummy.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Great news so far - B&C have checked in for their flight and so far all is well!  And the connector flight still shows it's good to go too.  Yay!!!

  • Chipmunk

HooYah!!!  (Maybe I am to reserve that just for our Navy congrats but I figured this one warranted it!)

  • Gigi

Northwoodsmom - I want to see the cupcakes and thank you. I’m really hoping to bump off with your boy!!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

They made their connector flight and should be landing in less than 2 hours!  I'll take that HooYah Chipmunk!

  • Chipmunk

B'sNukeMom - Better Late than Never!!!

Funny, I had an email from AAA today telling what airports not to fly out of because they have poor rates for on time and connecting flights!!!

  • Pizanche

Happy Thanksgiving all!!  It's a different sort of Thanksgiving this year - just 2 of us.  Enjoy your day and be safe and hug those close!

  • Chipmunk

    Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Pizanche - Even if it is just the two of you, may you have a restful day.

  • DsMom2020

Happy Thanksgiving to all. I hope you all have many wonderful things to be thankful for....

I am thankful that my son is happy in the Navy and seems to have found his niche! I do miss him so much tho.

  • Tulip

So many things to be grateful for this year…our daughter started her first “professional” job and passed her psychologist licensure exam, had a cancer scare that turned out to be benign, hubby retired, is continuing with his diaconate studies with our church, and our sailor is on his way home from a very bad deployment. Hope everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving with loved ones, while I know many of us are missing our sailors! Prayers that you can be reunited with them soon.

Welcome aboard to our newest members ~ Birdie and Lise!

Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page.  Lots of good info there.  Also take a look at the Pages (20) to the right under the member profiles - be sure to hit "view all".  And the discussion forum above has some good info too - be sure to read Chipmunks "Nuke A School Daily Schedule".  And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have.

  • Tulip

Any suggestions on how to get a sponsor for staying at Navy Lodge in Bremerton or Bangor WA for homecoming with my sailor being at sea?

Tulip - I don't have any answers for you.  Hopefully someone else will chime in!

  • Chipmunk

Tulip - Sorry, I don't know either. Honestly, you might want to check with your ombudsman, they should have more information for how things take place on the base and such or maybe they have some recommendations. I don't know how your son's command works, but our ship has a private FB group and so people will often ask questions of other members there for help.

I know we have a couple of WA moms on here, they might be able to give some assistance, as to at least how homecomings work.

Birdie and Lise - Welcome Aboard!!  We are glad you have joined us, please come and share where you are at in this Nuke journey with your loved one. My son helped me write the A school information above, and now he is out in the fleet.

B'sNukeMom - I trust all went well with your kids travel and that you had an enjoyable Thanksgiving!!

  • MomofJoseph

Hello, Nuke moms!  I joined this group a while back, but haven't posted because my son was at BC.  His PIR was last week and now he is officially at GC!  I look forward to getting to know all y'all!  <3

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Chipmunk - yes, the kids made it here, but boy was their travel all screwed up.  I've never seen such a mess with an airlines before.  They had travel screw ups coming and going but we made it through and we made the best of the time they were here.  It was so good to see them and we had beautiful weather here in CA - upper 70's to low 80's the whole time they were here while it was snowing daily in MI.  We enjoyed a lot of time on the patio ;-D  Now we count down until May when they come for their "Vow Renewal" (postponed 3 times  - thanks covid lol!)

MomofJoseph - welcome again to the group!  Now the fun begins - but at least you'll have more communication!

  • Northwoodsmom

Welcome MomofJoseph! I never heard from my son until the second day either. I know my son is no longer in this group but I was here for over 19 months so there is a little I have learnt. Your son will be going through INDOC where they learn life lessons.  He will have a little more time for communications and will make friends with other Nukes. I know my son's group would grill out alot when he first started. I remember they played football, flag football I think he said.

I hope you do get a chance to visit him there. Charleston is such a special beautiful place to visit. My daughter and  I especially enjoyed the unique tours they offered. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

  • Chipmunk

MomofJoseph - Welcome to the Nuke Pipeline side of things. Sometimes there is a lot more conversation on here than at other times but remember you may always ask your questions and hopefully someone will help you out. Northwoodsmom has a lot of recent knowledge regarding GC as well and can probably hook you up with the ombudsman.

And definitely plan to make a trip to see your sailor. I believe they have opened up A school graduation again, they have PS graduation, I do not know about Prototype graduation. Your sailor will likely have leave at some point (COVID restrictions messed a lot of that up for many of our sailors.), but keep in mind that just as with BC, just because it worked a certain way for one sailor, it might not be the same for the next. My son did not have the same leave after A school that many others did, even those who had holiday standdown. They will need to be checking with their SLPO. (Section Leading Petty Officer) once he classes up. - be sure to read my discussion above if you haven't already as it explains several things.

My son's SLPO gave out his cell phone as I recall but not all of them will. Make sure your son knows that he needs to have you listed on his HIPPA and first contact information. He should be filling out paperwork this week during INDOC.

  • Chipmunk

Northwoodsmom - I am glad you are sticking around the group.

Tulip - I am reaching out to some of the other members on this site that might be able to help answer your question. Have you figured anything out yourself?

  • Chipmunk

B'sNukemom - I am glad that you all had a nice Thanksgiving and that the kids traveled safely, even if rather chaotically!! I am prayerful that our sailors do not have to face too many issues for those who have upcoming leave. I heard of another sailor that had lots of delays as he returned back to his home base.

  • Chipmunk

So, my husband sent me this comic of Calvin and Hobbes, I am not sure if it is okay to actually print it here but I am putting the link so you may view it online. It is from a couple of weeks ago and he had a friend of his share it with him -

Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for November 21, 2021 - GoComics  It hit my funny bone and my boys both love Calvin & Hobbes.

  • MyKidsMom

Hello all!  I haven’t posted in a while, though I read the emails. My son graduates from Power School tomorrow. My husband is flying down to see him and they will both come home on Saturday.  This will be the first time my sailor has been home since he left for BC. I wish I could have gone to graduation, but one of us needs to stay home with our high school daughter. I’m looking forward to having boots in the house.

  • Chipmunk

MyKidsMom - congratulations to your son!!!  Prayers for safe travels. I am sorry that you were not able to visit him.  Has he figured out his housing for Prototype and gotten that all arranged?

  • MyKidsMom

Chipmunk— My sailor FaceTimed me and gave me a tour of his apartment about two weeks ago. He has two roommates. Now all he needs is his drivers license. He had his permit when he left for BC. We’ll have to see if he can finish up what he needs while he is home.

  • Chipmunk

MyKidsmom - Hopefully your son can get his license. It is hard when they don't drive. My son had a roommate who did not have his license and had to get rides. Our recruiter was surprised when my son did not have his license when he first signed up for DEP. I am glad we got it done before he left for BC, but I also know that nothing was stated that he "had" to have it. I think they should make sure that anyone going a Nuke rating knows they will need to be able to drive during Prototype. Then all of this mess the last year with so many agencies closing down, getting permits, DL, Real IDs, car tags, it has been a mess.

Glad to hear that he has gotten an apartment and roommates. Just FYI, they need to have a plan in order for how they will close out their lease because not every sailor that finishes Prototype at the same time will necessarily have their orders the same and some have to stick around after graduation for a while.
