Congratulations Pizanche! BZ to your son! Have fun in Charleston and try She crab soup and shrimp & grits if you like seafood.
Question: is there a submarine or carrier docked in San Diego right now? Can I visit and take a picture closer where they at? My niece’s bf assigned in SD, just wanted to take advantage of his ID to get in. Btw is it possible for me to get in with him? Will visit next week.
My son is doing good in Prototype just complaining about schedule. But he would still visits the gym even he complained being tired. It’s funny when he calls/FaceTime with his roomies on how to cook this, how to set the oven, what should I buy to cook this ..
Gigi - the Vinson is in San Diego and they recently returned from deployment. You can get on base with him but you won't be able to get on to the Vinson. When B was in Norfolk he was attached to the Truman and he was able to get us on base and on to the ship for a tour. But that's because he was on that ship. Again, you should be able to get on base with him and at least get a close up view!
Gigi, I will try to answer your SD questions.
The carriers and subs go in and out. Right now, there is an active carrier docked but it is subject to movement. You can't miss it if you are anywhere near downtown. The subs are harder to see.
Depending on where your daughter's BF is based...his ID should get you on base if he is in the car with you and stays with you. Then you could get close enough for a WOW moment at the size. The best way to get on board is to know someone who is stationed on the specific ship. Subs and their base are much harder to access.
I highly recommend visiting the USS Midway Museum...it is designed to help you get a feel for what carrier life is like. Last week my son, who recently returned from deployment, visited some friends at the museum and he remarked at how it really did feel familiar.
Send me a friend request and PM me...maybe I can help when you are here.
Hope this helps.
Gigi - I hope you are able to visit the USS Midway Museum when you get to SD. If you aren't able to visit there, I would encourage you to visit the USS Yorktown when your son graduates Prototype. Also, there is a small sub ported next to it that while it is not the size, I am sure of any of our active duty ships it is still interesting to visit.
As for the Prototype schedule, as I have commented on before, every different class, T-track, and Prototype were all preparations for my son's transition to his time in the fleet. Their hours and schedules are not likely to change, they will continue to be hard, especially if they are out to sea. Not trying to be a downer, but just trying to be transparent.
So sorry do you see my messages this has been going on since Friday night sorry for the typo I couldn’t see what I’m typing but I thank you all was able to read before it gets wonky I’ll be back when I get situated
hi everyone, my sailor surprised me on Sat for my birthday and just left to go back to Charleston as he's leaving Monday for Hawaii where he's been stationed; it's bittersweet - while i am so proud of him, there is NO PREPARATION for when they leave for real...ugh my heart!
Ha! I can see what I said — I literally typing over that pink that said Failed to load so I am not seeing what I’m typing - I am in Vegas right now will visit SD by Thursday will update or maybe ask more questions before then. Just not sure why our page is acting up on me
Gigi - Sorry, I have been busy with several things today and am just now seeing this at 10:30 pm on Tuesday night.
Every so often the page does go wonky as B'sNukeMom says. If you are reading on your mobile device, it might have something to do with that. I am not sure how else to help you, I am not the IT person for this site.
I hope you get to have your visit.
Nautical Mom - I am so glad you had a surprise visit and yes, those goodbyes can be tough! I don't live close enough to mine to see him often - but it seems like every time I know he has to go out to sea, it is harder, sometimes are harder than others.
Thanks for the memes the Snoopy ones make me smile and I needed that springtime one!! Lots of emotional things going on in my life and it doesn't even have anything to do with my sailor and his schedule!
Does anyone out there have any advice or knowledge of how to send an email to a sailor deployed on a submarine? I thought I had an appropriate email address in the event the sub surfaces, but alas, no. A few weeks ago, "USGOVT/Honolulu come up on my phone and I knew he couldn't possibly be in Honolulu. Of course I assumed the worst--I'm a mom. But then I heard his chipper voice saying "Hello, Mama!!" They had offboarded and onboarded personnel and he had been allowed to go topside. Yes, he sounded thrilled. But it's been silence ever since (OF COURSE!!) Right now I have no address to send an email to let him know we think of him, love him, and miss him. He gets no news of home. He will miss a second brother's wedding, just as he missed his eldest brother's wedding. But he is happy. Any information which would help me reach out would be so, so appreciated.
In the weeks and weeks since I was last on, I've sold my home, moved to a temporary quarters in Michigan, and put an (accepted) offer on a tiny bungalow built in 1915. Trying to adjust to working remotely and having my things spread out over three locations until I can get permanently settled is interesting. Still, I count my blessings every single day.
Sending my best wishes to all of you, and thank you in advance for any advice!
my son was on a submarine and when he was deployed we had no contact whatsoever. We did have an email address to send info to him but seldom used it. You may need to contact his Ombudsman to get his military email address, but keep in mind, he may not have access to his email, especially when they are deployed or underway. The only time I received an email from my son when they were underway was when their time away was extended and I needed to take care of some business for him. I was then able to return his email, which he did receive and responded. Otherwise, the only time we heard from our sailor is when they pulled into port. Good luck and I hope contacting the ombudsman is helpful. Best wishes with your move
ShipOfDoodles - I can't help with the sub info, but it is good to hear from you. I can relate to the discombobulation of having things in three different areas. I am sorry that your sailor is going to miss another wedding. That is hard, maybe harder on his brother than on him.
momc - Good to hear from you, thanks for responding!
ShipOfDoodles sub email say your sailor's name is david O Johnson on the sub michigan gold crew. the email would be JohnsDO@Michigan-gold.navy.mil 5 leatters of the last name. first initial, middle initial, boat name. ( crew is only for ssbn and ssgn not fast attacks. Hope that helps.
ShipOfDoodles - my son is on a fast attack sub and I never received an email from him while he was/is on deployment. I would occasionally send him one. I did ask him if he ever received them and he said that he did eventually read them. His boat email is the first six letters of last name first initial middle initial@sub name.navy.mil
Everyone, thank you all so much for your help and insight! Since subs cannot receive communication until they surface, I do understand I may never hear from him while he is deployed. That being said, I guess I just wanted to have some avenue to write out a little news here and there, and let him know we all think of him often. He may never read them, but it would make me feel better to let him know we have not forgotten him, ha ha. This is a shorter deployment (under 90 days I think), but good practice for those 6-month deployments he has coming up.
KayCee, my son is on a fast attack as well, so I will follow your instructions on the address. Thank you momc and topdog1p for your input as well.
Chipmunk, I really do need to get on the site more often--the support and friendship offered here is wonderful. Thank you!!
ShipOfDoodles - when I email my sailor while he is out on underways, I also copy to his regular email. That way, if there was something that he missed when he was out to sea, I know that he can always catch up on it later.
Also, anyone is welcome to join my Beyond BC group that I started. The page is private, but we still observe OPSEC/ PERSEC - it is a little chattier at times and the great thing is we cross the boundaries of many different rates. Just trying to be a place of community. There are several members who have Nuke sailors and in general, we usually leave those questions to this group, but it is a nice place to connect.
B's NukeMoM-Yes, hopefully the plan to stay! I was supposed to build a very SMALL house up near Empire, but the quote came back so ridiculously high, I started looking at existing homes--also a major challenge. I do have an accepted offer on a 1915 bungalow in Ludington--have to get through the inspection though! Burton is a bit down and east from me, but I think Michigan is wonderful no matter where you are! Working remotely for now, but probably will segue into other work in a year or so.
Chipmunk, what a great idea to CC the personal mail. Thanks! And, I would like to look into Beyond BC. My son has been out on a number of underways since arriving at his permanent station, but this is by far the longest. Touching base with other moms would be good for my psyche. I have a pretty good attitude about the lengthy silences, but my heart is still a mama's heart. I miss him so.
ShipOfDoodles, would love to have you on Beyond BC. Do you still have your golden doodles, I remember you would show us pictures of them on the Nuke page. I pray everything turns out great with the inspection and you get settled in nicely in Michigan. My son in love is from Traverse City and I have visited that area. Hello again.
ShipOfDoodles - I googled it and it's about 190 miles from Burton. But maybe sometime when we visit again we could meet up halfway. I always enjoy meeting new Navy moms!
Northwoodsmom - B&C took a trip to Traverse City a few years ago and they loved it.....One of these visits to MI we hope to get there too.
Hey all - just a check in...we survived our first deployment. We were so glad to be present for their homecoming! This is a pic my husband snapped while we were waiting for our guy to get off the boat (he was on the shutdown crew....if you know, you know lol). I hope everyone and their sailors are well!
Navymom18- what a great picture, thank you for sharing. My sailor just arrived for his first tour in Hawaii and like all of us, I am so proud. Congrats to you get to be with your sailor and thanks for the heads up on homecoming...I didn't even know about that - I better save my airline miles and credit card points!!!
B'sNukeMoM-I would absolutely love to meet up sometime! And Northwoodsmom, thanks for your well-wishes. For a 107 year-old house, she came through pretty well. I will have to replace the shingles/add a ridge vent, but the structure is solid and I was able to get a concession for something off for the roof condition. I have to wait until August 1 to close (allow seller time to locate suitable housing in this crazy market), but I am thankful I have a place to stay in the interim. Traverse is just an hour away right now, but when I get to Ludington it will be a bit farther. Love Traverse. I am happy to report though, that I am also enjoying discovering Ludington. What a gorgeous waterfront park/common areas they have. And I did add Beyond BC to my groups at Chipmunks recommendation!
Nautical Mom-my son is at Pearl as well. Arrived last October and I honestly think he's been out more than in!
Navymom18-loved the picture and I am taking strength from your survival of the first (long?) deployment. There are long days sometimes wondering how he and his boatmates are doing. I keep "no news is good news" at the ready in my thoughts.
