B'sNukeMom - Thank you!! Happy Mother's Day to you as well!

  • sunflower

I got this message from the American Red Cross today and thought that others may like to see it.

Each May, our nation reflects on the tremendous service of our heroic men and women in uniform and honors the sacrifices of America’s fallen service members on Memorial Day. Here at the American Red Cross, our mission was born on the battlefield through Clara Barton’s care for Civil War soldiers. Today, we are proud to continue Clara’s legacy of service by supporting the U.S. military community from the time service members take their oaths to when they navigate their lives as veterans. I am deeply inspired by the strength and selflessness exemplified by our military members and their families – and I am profoundly thankful for the compassionate support you show them as a part of our Red Cross community.

    Gail McGovern
    President and CEO
    American Red Cross

P.S. If you are a servicemember or veteran experiencing hardship, don’t hesitate to text GETHEROCARE to 90999 and it will be our honor to assist you.

You can check out all of the services here: https://www.redcross.org/about-us/our-work/military-families.html

sunflower thank you for sharing this, is there a way you can share it on beyond site, I am sure the Ladies would love to see this.

  • sunflower

I'm sure that the Red Cross won't mind if you copy it to share with other groups that you belong to. Most everyone knows to contact them to get in touch with your sailor in an emergency, but they have lots of other services available for the military as well. It's a good idea to check them out before you need them.

sunflower - It is good to hear from you. Thanks for sharing. Here is a link to the group on this site that Northwoodsmom is referring to  - Beyond BC

    Happy Mom's Day!!!

    Happy Mother's Day!

Sundays at NNPTC were always hard for talking to my sailor. With our time difference, he would forget and call me in church - so keep your phones on vibrate at least and sit on the outside of the row if you are at your place of worship.

Afternoons mine was often studying, but I would text and at least let him know I could talk. It is easy for them to forget when Mother's Day is - if no one reminded them, so take the initiative and at least connect with your sailor.

    BNMHs!

    Happy Mother's Day Sea sisters!

I'm not on here much but I just got off the phone with my daughter who is an instructor at NNPTC. She made sure to remind her students that they should call their mommas today. Especially in prototype, they can lose track of days.

If you haven't heard from your kiddo already keep in mind that they are probably pooped and may not be sure what day it is!

  • Northwoodsmom

JayDee659, my awesome husband text my son several times to remind him it was Mother's Day and to call his Mom. He just called. Hubby knows if Moms not happy no one's happy.

My son is in the DTP in Goose Creek waiting to leave to Lemoore Navy Air Base. He hasn't been home since he left January 8, 2020. He gave up the holiday stand down to allow others to come home. He has been putting in chits to come home but they have been denied and he has almost 90 days off to use up. They keep telling him just wait until your written orders with the travel dates come in and then you can take those days off. Others tell him just keep sending in the chits until they get tired of denying them and let him come home. Does anyone know what he can do to use up some of those days. Thanks for any help.

  • Chipmunk

Northwoodsmom - I am sorry, I do not know the answer to your question. My only suggestion is for him to check with personnel somehow because I think they are the ones that handle the questions regarding leave status. I know they were allowing the sailors to rollover extra leave time without losing it, but your son is one of those caught up in the mess of everything.

It does not help to dwell on the past or what should have happened, but this is a good reminder for others that while it is worthwhile in various situations to defer and let another shipmate have leave time, if you are accruing and not using your leave time, there may not always be another convenient leave time for you to take your leave time and it might end up being forfeited. I don't know how long they are extending the extra rollover days - but I would encourage your son to take his leave as soon as he is able. For his well-being as for Momma's - and I do realize he is trying!

  • CanukaVet

Northwoodsmom, I am glad to hear that your son has soft orders. I'm sorry he keeps getting turned down for leave.
Sounds like they are waiting for his hard orders and can roll it all together.
Assuming your son has a car, it is a long way from Goose Creek to Lemoore and sort of through your area, a long way. My son had over 6 weeks between his detachment date from GC and his "report no later than date" on the west coast. During that time he was "unattached" and free to do what he wanted within military regulations. I don't know how much time was given/offered to him and how much additional he requested but it doesn't hurt to ask. Nor do I know how much time was considered transition vs. leave from his bank. He was reimbursed for moving himself in his car. Again, I don't know what, is any, other moving expenses were reimbursed. But for him it was a long overdue vacation to explore and chill.
Good luck to you and your son and whomever to California. Lemoore NAS is in central California, near Fresno. It is home to many of the jet squadrons assigned to the west coast carriers.
  • CanukaVet

    I meant "Welcome to California".
  • Northwoodsmom

Thank you Ladies, he was told he would be in Lemoore for a couple months and then headed to Norfolk. They gave him his squadron number and the ship he will be on but I am not sure what I can share. Not sure also if they will allow him leave between Goose Creek and school in Lemoore or between Lemoore and his first assignment in Norfolk. Being off for the summer was hoping for sooner than later but like he told me " we just need to learn to go with the flow. He's actually easy going not like his mom at all, I need planning and dates. You would think being responsible for feeding over a hundred kids a day through Covid and the food chain issues I would learn to just go with the flow. Thank you all for the help.

Good morning Ladies, anyone that has been following knows my son was removed from the Nuclear program back in October and has been waiting to move on. He has been in DTP but this weekend they gave him a airline ticket to be in Lemoore for school Aviation Electronic Technician. He starts his new classes today. It has been a long wait, 7 1/2 months in fact but he finally has a new direction. I was extremely overwhelmed with the fact he was suppose to go submarine but now knowing aircraft can't land on subs that is off the table.

I will stay on this site if it is alright with the administration just in case another mom should find herself in the same situation and needs help manuevering through what's happening. Prayers to all the Nuclear Sailors, the pipeline is extremely difficult and stressful and I am proud of everyone of them that make it through.

Looking forward to the next adventure in my son's Navy journey. God Bless you all.

  • Pizanche

Northwoodsmom - Congrats on the new adventure for your son.

  • Chipmunk

Northwoodsmom - WooHoo!! I know your son and you have been waiting a long time for this. Yes, please stick around!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

    Northwoodsmom, I'm so happy for you and your son! He's on a new path at last and has a great future ahead of him. I'm so glad you want to stick around. Your experience will be so helpful for moms who might be disappointed or worried when their own sailor experiences the same thing. It's all about the right fit and what we have heard here is that it pretty much works out just fine. He's part of the greatest navy in the world. You have a lot to be proud of. {{N4M hugs}}

I just saw this about an alligator in Charleston. https://weather.com/science/nature/video/five-charleston-officers-n...  It reminded  me that there's a named gator on base at GC. My son saw it a few times when he was running there. I can't recall its name, but you can get a cute stuffed one at the NEX.

  • sunflower

Northwoodsmom - I'm so glad to hear that your son finally gets to move on.  Not everyone that volunteers for subs get it, but I'm sure that he's still excited to start this next adventure.

  • JayDee659

Sunflower, that alligator on base is Charlie!

  • Chipmunk

    Hi JayDee659!!

Sunflower - I did not know there was a stuffed version of him.

Thanks for sharing your video, I thought that was interesting how they all fell on top of the alligator to weigh it down, especially the young lady on the bottom!!

  • Northwoodsmom

NancyJo, thank you! Through these past 8 months of uncertainty I have learnt patience and that everyone's situation is uniquely different. Most stay at DTP for 4-6 months and I was getting extremely anxious but I knew he was safe and being taken care of. As any parent it was very difficult to see him struggle but the Navy went beyond, giving him all kinds of support hoping it would click but the Lord had different plans for him and I am beyond proud of the way he has handled this situation. I hope that I can add support for those going through the same thing.

  • Chipmunk

B'sNukeMom - I am sure you are very busy with all that is going on, just letting you know that we hope the wedding was just wonderful. We have had rain for three mornings now, so I am thinking about your sunshine!!
