Morning - I am hoping someone can answer some questions for me.  My son is just about done with prototype and got his soft orders, and his sponsor has already reached out to him. he took his Comps and will take boards in a couple of weeks.  I'm looking for any info on the moving portion, if the Navy transports his stuff and what about him? will the Navy pick up one of the flights if he comes home for his "transfer leave"? I did talk to him and he is a bit stressed with the boards coming up so he's not thinking about the after part. Me - I'm thinking about it because he asked if I could help. So, I am reaching out to you ladies with hope.  Thanks

  • Northwoodsmom

Pizanche, I know when my son came home from C school he paid from California to home. They paid from home to his new home base. Not sure if it's the same for Nukes. I hope that helps.

  • Chipmunk

Pizanche - I would have to ask my son when he is back home, if he ever was reimbursed for his travel from GC to VA or not. So, my son drive his car to Norfolk, VA where his ship was stationed. We have friends who live nearby, so he actually left his car there and then they took him to the airport and picked him up from the airport when he flew home to spend a month with us. I am fairly certain, we paid for his airplane ticket both ways, because I think my son was only able to claim his travel from GC to VA for his travel expenses.

  • Pizanche

    Northwoodsmom - thank you.

    Chipmunk - thank you.

  • WearsLargeHats

Pizanche, are your son's soft orders for Continental US or OCONUS? It makes a difference, esp. for transporting vehicles.

When he gets his orders, tell him to read carefully. There will be a "detach by" date and a "report no later than" date, and the orders will specify is he is entitled to transfer leave, but regardless I think he has to apply for it. I think you can assume that he will have to pay the difference to come home for transfer leave. He can work that out with the Yeoman or whoever does the travel arrangements.

It is good that he is already in contact with his sponsor.

The 2 times my son did a PCS w/in CONUS he drove. They have to file a travel plan, have a limit on how far they can drive in a day, and can submit to get reimbursed for some expenses . Hawaii was a whole 'nother thing.

  • Pizanche

WearsLargeHats - thank you!. His plan is to sell his car before he leaves, so that isn't an issue.  I will tell him to read the orders carefully, I think his soft orders mentioned this stuff too. He is in the whole other thing category - lol.  I'm glad his sponsor has reached out, from everything i have read here, sometimes it doesn't happen.

Happy Friday!  Vacation countdown is on....we leave in the morning for Branson and can't wait!  Trying to get everything wrapped up here at work - ugh!  I've received some fun suggestions on things to see and do while there so thank you for those!

The weather appears to be a little crazy - from the 80's down to the 50's while we are there.....There's a pretty big weather event that is happening today but hopefully by the time we arrive tomorrow evening it has all passed.....

  • joe-mom

B'sNukeMom - Hope you have a wonderful trip! One other fun thing I forgot to mention is the fountain show at Branson Landing in downtown Branson. Same company behind the water show at the Bellagio in Vegas.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

joe-mom - thank you for that suggestion!  We've seen the water show at the Bellagio and it is spectacular!  We will definitely put this on our list :)

  • JNMnavymomOH

joe-mom  My son gave me a potential start date in May for PowerSchool.  Wondering if your son might start the same time, as I know he is having surgery.

  • joe-mom

JNMnavymomOH - He was supposed to start in mid-May with his class from A-school, but now, because of the surgery/recovery time, he's delayed until at least mid-July. He's a little bummed because he loves his class, but he's pretty resilient. Perhaps our boys could still end up in Prototype together?

  • Pizanche

Morning - Today is starting off to be a good day!! My sailor called this morning and he passed qualifications and boards. Thank you for your support over the last couple of years. Going down in May for the graduation and then onto the next adventure! Have a wonderful day.

  • Chipmunk

Pizanche -- WooHOO! Bravo Zulu!! Congratulations to your sailor!! Wow - he finished early!!

B'sNukeMom - Thinking about you!! Hoping you all are having a grand time together!!

  • joe-mom

Pizanche - That's fantastic! Congrats to your sailor!

  • Pizanche

    Chipmunk - thank you!!!!

  • Chipmunk

Pizanche - You are welcome!! That is quite an achievement. Our sailors put in a lot of hard work to be trained for their duty stations and then when they get there, they continue to train and qualify.

    Happy Easter!!

  • Chipmunk

Good afternoon!! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!

B'sNukeMom - I hope you had a wonderful vacation!! And you are probably playing catch up at work now.

I had texted both sets of my out of town kids and wished them and their spouses Happy Easter, knowing they were busy and not likely to call. My sailors had shared photos of their evening. A little later, my DIL calls and sounded so serious, she said, I am calling because X is driving, but I thought something was wrong! - My son starts talking on the speaker phone and said, "We were calling because it is Easter!!" I have to admit, I appreciate knowing they still think about me, even though they are married.

I hope many of you received calls or messages from your sailors as well!!

Back and had a wonderful time on vacation.  Yes, trying to get caught back up.....I hope everyone is doing well!

  • Chipmunk

Good Afternoon Everyone!! I hope you are having a nice Sunday afternoon.

I recently had someone ask me for information on DTP, so I have bumped our discussion back up into the queue, DTP and reclassification questions,

I know some of you that are still on this group have had sailors go through DTP and I thought you could either post some more responses at the bottom of the discussion above, or on our group here. Thank you.

Specifically, do we have any other information on DTP? I haven't search for more information in the discussions, as this has been my go to.

Any suggestions for helping our sailors stay both mentally and physically fit during their time in DTP?

Any suggestions for helping them with their re-rating or what the process looks like?

  • WearsLargeHats

Chipmunk, hard to believe but it has been almost 8 years since my son (now STS2) went through DTP. I'm not sure any information I have would still be any good.

  • Chipmunk

WearsLargeHats - I understand. But if you can at least share anything that you recall from what he did during his time in DTP or how he handled the situation, may be helpful. Thanks!

I was thinking about my son's time during INDOC. He had a month between BC and classing up for A school. He called me one day to tell me what his new job was going to me. He said, it is better to volunteer for something that you think you might like to do, rather than wait and be voluntold to do something that you would prefer not to do!!! - I wonder if it is not like that for many of our sailors going through DTP. If they can find something that they would prefer to do, raise your hand, volunteer for that job, before they are told to do something else they would rather not do.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hi all - been a long time since we've had a "check in" with everyone.  Feel free to share an update!

    I'll start:

I've been on N4M since 2012 when son joined - he's out now, as is his wife who was also a nuke - who he met while in VA.  He was an MMN (Truman) and she was an ELT (Lincoln).  As you know they are getting ready to have their first baby in a month and I can't wait.  Hubby and I have been together 40 years, married almost 35.  We also have a younger son who is a college coach (track and field/cross country). He's getting married in March, 2024.  I'm one of the main admins here on the site and continue to stick around because there really aren't too many others willing to take over lol!  I live in CA, born and raised and I've been fortunate to meet quite a few navy moms in person.

  • WearsLargeHats

Chipmunk - "voluntold" is a term I learned from my son.

Haven't you heard that NAVY stands for Never Again Volunteer Yourself? I got that from my Sailor, too. I think there is a joke like that for every branch of the military, but if there is one for Space Force, I haven't heard it yet.

  • Chipmunk

WearsLargeHats - True!! True!!!  My son really liked to organize things and there was a closet that needed such attention. I don't know how it came about but he said he raised his hand and volunteered to do it. He much preferred that task over a few others like waxing floors and such.

It doesn't always work out for the best though. Primarily, they have to learn to be proactive. As my son is getting ready to get out, there are several things he has told me about having to often send gentle reminders to people that he needs information from, or tasks accomplished so he can move on to his next step. Sometimes they have to be the squeaky wheel, the challenge is learning just how loudly or how much to squeak.

  • Chipmunk

Good Morning B'sNuke Mom - Here is my check in!!

My sailor will be finishing up his enlistment before long, and then trying to focus on his schooling. My sailor gal, his wife, reenlisted last year, so I will still be sticking around as there is still more Navy life to learn. She has a different rate, so I really should look into that group more, however, this is homeport for me!

It is hard to believe that it has been almost 6 years now. It is hard to stay connected to everyone on my friend list, but I hope that I have been an encouragement to you as much as you have to me. Be sure to send me a PM and update me on your sailor. I have stretched myself over several groups on this site, so my one-on-one time is limited but I think of you all often.

  • KayCee

Good morning, happy Wednesday! I will do a more thorough check-in, however I’m just heading into work so I will sit down later for that. Quickly, my son joined in 2017, is an ETN and is currently on a seawolf class, fast-attack sub. He is looking forward to finally getting assigned his shore duty (vs. sea duty) toward the end of this year.  I must get for now, but more soon. Have a great day!

  • topdog1p

check-in, I just realize it has been a very long time since I posted anything. I do however read most all post.  This year marks 8 years in the navy. My son is getting ready to go back to sea duty after teaching at Groton. He currently is still in Groton in SOAC( sub officer advance course) I asked if he would have any trouble in the classes as these were the classes he has been teaching the last couple years. This last year he finished his master degree, finally got to go on their honeymoon ( married 10/2020) to Europe. I am excited as they will be heading back to west coast and only be 2.5 hours away. He will back on his old sub as the navigation dept head.

  • Chipmunk

Good Morning KayCee & topdog1p - It is good to hear from you. It sounds like your sailors have been busy. Hopefully, both of you will have a chance to see your sailors more often.

KayCee - is yours going to still be stationed nearby or moving elsewhere? My DIL has been enjoying her shore duty.

topdog1p - Congratulations to your sailor, lots of accomplishments.

  • momc

Checking in. It will be 8 years in July, with one year remaining on his contract. He is currently on shore duty at Ballston Spa and has no plans to reenlist.  He recently took the test to become a Chief. He did pass, but must go through an interview process to see if he makes the final selection

He will complete an undergrad degree in December of this year. I believe his degree will be in Nuclear Technology or something on that order. He also recently got engaged and they are starting to plan their ceremony for next summer.
I don’t post often but I do read all the posts. It’s so great to hear how all our sailors are doing

  • The Hammer

Checking in. My son is in his 5th year now and is on crew with a fast attack sub in Bangor, WA. He will roll off and shift to shore duty early next year with plans to reenlist for an additional two. He has interest in the reserves after that. With that said… it has been quite a ride and I’m so grateful that I’ve had this group to help me along the way!

I lurk at the fringe and check in every now and again. It’s interesting to me how we begin this journey hanging on like it’s a lifeline while they are in boot camp and then the pipeline. I feel like, as the years go by, and he get is further into his career, I was able to relax more. His girlfriend now lives with him and things seem to be going well.

Thanks to all for listening and guiding me along the way!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

momc - We loved visiting Ballston Spa - we were lucky to go twice when B did prototype there. BZ to him on all his accomplishments and congratulations on his engagement!

topdog1p - BZ to your son too!  It's so exciting to see what everyone is doing. Congrats on his nuptials and yay for heading back closer to you!  That's the best!

The Hammer - it will be interesting to see what he gets for shore duty.  It's nice to see them get in a groove and get settled in - less worry for us for sure!

KayCee - any ideas on the sea duty location?

Good friends of B's (she's out now - she was his mentor in the nuke program) and her husband (he just made chief - also nuke) just transferred from Washington to Ok - recruiting shore duty.  So if there shore duty is recruiting they can really end up anywhere!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

I work right around the corner from the March Air Reserve Base and there's an air show this weekend.  The Thunderbirds are out practicing - it's awesome!  Flying right over our office - such a beautiful sight to see!  I love it!

Check-in here!  My son is coming up on his 10 year mark as an EMN1.  He is on a submarine right now and absolutely loves it.  His sister is getting married in June (we love our son in law) and we are all very hopeful her brother will make it.  I know he will do what he can, but I am also very aware the needs of the Navy come first.  As a Mom, I can understand that, but don't have to like it!!!!

  • 3B'smom

checking in - My son is wrapping up his contract. He was on the fence about re-enlisting, but having his first deployment happen as the world grappled with COVID helped him make his decision. I suppose 200+ days on a ship will do that to you. We are waiting to hear where he will end up as a civilian. I know that he is excited to finally be able to actually live with his wife. She was finishing school and will finish her residency program a few weeks after he is out of the Navy.

It has definitely been a ride. I appreciate the info and support I have found on these pages over the years.

3B'smom - I can understand him not wanting to re-enlist.Very exciting news that he will be able to finally live with his wife.

  • Tulip

Checking in: my sailor son is still in PNW on a sub that is in dry dock and he passed the Chief exam. As I understand it, he will learn if he makes chief in late summer. Before that he is planning to get married to his fiancé whom he met while in A School. She is now out of the Navy. Hoping that if he makes chief it will not mean another future deployment, but it will likely mean a repositioning. He has about 2 years left on his contract and probably will not reenlist a second time.

I too greatly appreciate all the wisdom and support over the years. It has been a wild and crazy ride! Thanks for being there!
