Joe-mom - I am so so happy for you! I will pray the same for you - that time goes slowly until he gets home, and then time will slow down. I hope you enjoy every minute of your time with him!
Axolot - congrats to your Sailor girl. That is exciting about the STA21 program. My sailor went to the information meeting about it, but never finished applying for it, so we don't have experience with it. Best of luck to your Sailor!!!
AxolotlMom - Happy to hear your daughter is settling in well to A school. My son had the same reaction - loved the structure of both A school and Power School. By the time Prototype rolled around, even though it wasn't structured like the other two, he was motivated to set his own schedule and qualify as early as possible. They learn so much in such a short time. Nice that you hear from her frequently!
Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page. Lots of good info there. Also take a look at the Pages (21) to the right under the member profiles - be sure to hit "view all". And the discussion forum above has some good info too - be sure to read Chipmunks "Nuke A School Daily Schedule". And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have.
Good Morning everyone!! I am still on Grandma duty with Baby Precious. My DIL's work schedule is all flip flop and I am trying to help my son get some extra rest when he can, while my daughter and I are visiting them.
B'sNukeMom - the picture of your husband is wonderful. I know my husband was sad to not be able to come see his granddaughter.
Beyond excited. Son will arrive soon for his cousins wedding. Staying almost two weeks. Family and friends coming from “the four corners”. Will be first time everyone (except his cousin and I who went to see him) has seen him since his horrible accident in February. He is feeling so much better. Stamina improving (when he would get brain fatigue his headache would worsen and his speech would slow down). Originally could only work 2-3 hours. Is up to 6-8 hour shifts with minimal brain fatigue - but he is still reluctant to drive. Hoping he can get used to driving again while he is home. He thinks he’ll be “fit for duty soon”. His time as a JSI will be up in the next couple months and the master chief from the sub he was assigned to (orders were cancelled due to accident) called him up a couple weeks ago and said he is still looking forward to having him. Made my son feel really good. He hopes to get reassigned to that sub.
Chipmunk - glad to hear you are getting lots of grandma duty!!
Dammit Allie - Welcome! I hope your sailor enjoys the pipeline (Nuke School). My son loved it and excelled (after basically flunking out of pre med college due to lack of effort). I was so scared he’d pull the same thing with the Navy and end up in big trouble! It was hard but he was up for the challenge. I guess he just needed the proper motivation. He made several great friends and they pushed each other all the way through - seeing who could get the highest score and celebrating each other’s accomplishments when the other person did better. His one buddy just got accepted to officer school after almost 2 years in the fleet.
B’sNukeMom - really cute photo of the “grand children” waiting for their dad to get home!
DsMom - That's great news! I'm so happy to hear your son is improving and that he may be on a ship soon. Hope he gets the sub he's hoping for. I know you'll love having him home. My son is home now for a couple of weeks so we're soaking up the time with him as much as possible. I'm dreading the day he leaves, but it's been wonderful.
Hello!! My son has finally transferred commands and is currently on his transfer leave. Quite a few questions about what he is to do next as his ship is currently on a deployment. Trying to get him ready for this next chapter (supplies, phone options, changing his license, bills, going through his belongings kind of things). Prototype graduation was wonderful. Advice for those going....if your nuke is in the early graduations and you want the souvenirs, get them EARLY. A tshirt I wanted sold out because I waited until the end of our graduation ceremony. It is nice having my nuke home, and I am excited for him for this adventure to begin, but I am also sad because I know where he is going next. These 18 months have gone by so quickly (MMN). He did the STAR re-enlistment, but he thinks he wants to stay in for as long as he can for the full retirement (22years?).
For those that have started the pipeline, my son and I made an agreement in regards to communication. He would call me on Sunday evenings. Sometimes he was busy and forgot, sometimes he had study hours. We would text occasionally during the week, especially if we had something we needed to talk about. It kept me from being anxious and it meant the call would be longer than 5 min. He doesn't do small talk very well, and if he doesn't have anything to say its better just to hang up than endure the silence and feel awkward.
joe-mom - I am so glad that we got to meet. I am extremely happy that your son came home and has re-opened those lines of communication. I know it is so nice having him home, even if the time seems so short. I still have mine for a bit yet, but it's going by so quickly.
D'sMom - so glad to hear that your son is improving. I'm sure it's been super frustrating for him but remind him these things take time! And I'm so glad he will be home for his cousins wedding. I'm sure the family time will do him well! Enjoy!
JNMnavymomOH - thanks for the update! Depending on how much longer the ship is out I would think they would fly him out to meet up with them.... Funny how the time seems to fly by in some instances but in other it seems like forever!
Nice that you and joe-mom were able to meet up! I've met many Navy moms over the years and I cherish each visit!
Chipmunk - continue to enjoy those snuggles with Baby P!
JMNavympmOH so good to hear you made it to graduation and are enjoying time with your son. Are there any plans to fly him to meet the ship? This week's port call was canceled due to weather so the sailors were bummed. Hopefully things will go smoothly for the next one. I told my son to be on the lookout for a new guy and that they seem to have lots in common (at least from what their moms think!)
4kidsforfun he says he won't know what the plan is for him until he checks in at Norfolk. But I think he is going to call and see if he can get a better idea as he does not own the vehicle he has been driving. He also says what they decide determines what he is able to pack and take. I saw the port call was cancelled. I kind of wonder how many of those port calls do the nukes really get to do, or if it might be like a rotation.
JMNavymomOH - my son and his Nuke friends got almost a day and a half and then again off for dinner when they stopped in Rio so I think they try to get them all of for at least a bit. I did see some post their kids got a half a day. I hope they don't have him stay in Norfolk long - when my son got there initially he went to the room they assigned him and for whatever reason he left and checked into a hotel. Not to mention the place he was initially told to report was not an open office. Luckily he finally got through to his sponsor and get the real details. The paperwork from Charleston was not correct. They made changes to where to be and when but none of it was approved or known by the folks in Norfolk. Fun times!
update on my little sailor girl...she's still really really loving it there at A school. She is taking her final exam for the Basic Electronics today so wish her well. I asked her if she is understanding it all. She said she gets MOST of it, but there's so much information all shoved at her at once. Which she knew this coming into it, so she's handling it well. She is in the top 25% of her class she says. She broke up with her boyfriend (also in the Navy but a short lived romance, he's in another state). He had gotten into a bit of trouble and she said with her security clearance she didn't want to be associated with anything like that. I think it was just a good excuse for her to end it. She's growing so much as a person it's awesome to see. We text on the weekends and if something interesting happened or i see a cool little facebook meme, then I'll send her a quick text to which she will respond. She says "everyone here says I act like a mechanic, what does a mechanic act like anyhow??" I have no idea! She's an EMN, so I don't know lol

AxolotlMom - great news on your daughter! They do throw stuff at them and it's pretty fast and furious. B said he's never memorized so much stuff in his life lol! Sounds like she made the correct decision on the relationship. She'll have time for romance later!
I'm glad it's Friday - our weather here in SoCal is heating up. Summer is definitely here!
Random question: we were told that my son will need a vehicle while he is in Norfolk, esp. because we don't know how long he will be there and if he is going to stay in barracks or what. Less than 7 days left. Where have these 2 weeks gone? And he is NOT ready.
