NUKE moms

Hello All!

I was wondering why N4M had gone so silent then discovered nearly 100 messages in my SPAM. So, will have to get that fixed.

My son's ship is home after 2 months at RimPac (exercises with 29 other countries) and several weeks in Hawaii, including some sports interactions.

My Mother's Day "gift" was a motorcycle that he brought home for himself. Dad & I are not totally on board because his primary reason is wanting to get to the base quicker. That is the worst and most dangerous time to be on the freeways & bridge, especially on a motorcycle. But he is a big boy and there is nothing we can do about it.

A little bit of me is envious of you moms who don't know what your sailor is up to on a daily basis. I am a basket-case every time he leaves on the motorcycle, until he safely returns. So far, he is still practicing but has some time until the Navy takes him away again. 

Hubby and I just got back from a hot three-week trip across the Gulf Coast. Not the best timing but we had expiring airline vouchers. He wants to visit all major league baseball teams (5 on this trip, 4 left) while I am into state capitols. We drove 3000 miles between Dallas & Miami; also visited almost a dozen museums including the USS Lexington, USS Alabama & USS Texas, Pacific War Museum (in Nimitz hometown), WWII Museum (New Orleans) & Naval Aviation Museum (Pensacola). Plus, a harrowing drive through Hurricane Debby-hey we are Californians. We are glad to be back where it is a little bit cooler.

Hi, Canuka !  I appreciate your update!  I just love this site because we really do have so much in common with so many people in this group!!!

My Sailor son just finished completing a riders course and is planning on getting a motorcycle.  His dad and I are also not on board, but we keep reminding ourselves that he is an "adult" (quotation marks are intentional - LOL).  He called today to say that he mailed me the paperwork for the DMV because he needs me to put a check in it that he will reimburse me for.  I appreciate that he trusts me to do it (even though he knows I don't approve).  But I sure hope USPS is SLOW in delivering the mail!

Canuka - no matter how much I try to change it my messages end up in my spam too!  It's so frustrating.  But luckily I'm on here daily to check on things so I do see what's going on.  And your trip sounds like it was awesome!  My hubby is doing the same thing, trying to hit all the baseball stadiums. We've checked off quite a few but have a LOT more to go.  Hopefully after we retire we'll get to more of them.

The Navy does require sailors to take a motorcycle safety course which is good.  And remember, one of the most important things is to WEAR FULL RIDING GEAR!  I can't emphasize that enough.

My son arrived at Goose Creek only earlier this month and is already talking about the riders course he can take. Even though I grew up around bikes and I'm not scared of them, it terrifies me to picture him on one! When I was young my dad had the requirements...helmet, long denim pants, close toed shoes etc. Today you see all kinds of crazy stuff. I know it's time for these boys to have a little fun on their own but gosh I worry about their safety. Mostly I worry about those around them on the roads that aren't looking out for motorcycles. They are smart kids or we wouldn't be here, hopefully they make smart decisions and ride responsibly!

lognavymom - I hope it's going well for your son at Goose Creek so far.  When my son was there, he started talking about a motorcycle, but thankfully, it's two years later before he's acted on it.  I'm hoping he continues to delay!

B’sNukeMom - good for you! I hope you have the best time ever! 

We are on an extended family vacation right now in one of our favorite family vacation spots. My sis and family join us soon. So hoping our son gets his leave chit approved to join us. I’m thinking it will be the last trip with him for a while. I would guess that leave time is more difficult once deployed. He’s awaiting his orders now, so it’s coming “soon”. His original orders got cancelled due to LIMDU. I recall a sailor friend was in limbo for months while waiting for orders after a medical hold….

DsMom2020 - Have a wonderful time!! And yes, getting leave is a lot more difficult when they are on the ship, whether deployed or not (at least if they aren't in dry dock). But it can also be difficult when they are on shore duty as well, depending on their watch bill and rate.

lognavymom - A bicycle is not the same as a motorcycle, but that is what my son rode until we were able to get a car to him. The benefit of the bicycle, he was able to ride it around on the NNPTC site as well. 

@Chipmunk - I was referring to motorcycle, not bicycle. A bicycle would be ideal, far less terrifying as a mom for sure!

My Sailor has been in Nuke A school in GC for 2 weeks.  Does anyone know how I send packages to him? Take care everyone!

Seahawks12 - Has your son "classed up" yet? If so, then you need his class #. If not then you will use Indoc in place of his class #. I am trying to reply on my phone - we shall see if I can get the rest of the information copied and pasted here for you.

Okay, I am not sure about opening the file with the address on my phone. If you can't figure it out, I will try to reply tonight when I can use my computer. I only used the Priority mail box when shipping to my sailor as it included free tracking & insurance up to $100.00. After mailing my first PKG, I learned that from my location it usually took 2 days to arrive. So, I tried to mail on Wed, and I would pay attention to the tracking so I could notify my son. I think the mailroom was only open untill 5 pm M-F and until noon on Saturday. I think they usually got out a little earlier on Friday. My son would go on Fri or Saturday to get his PKG. Regular mail is delivered to your sailor's class, but pigs get a pick up slip, so you may know before your son that his PKG has been delivered. 

Due to multiple hands touching the mail - Do Not Send anything valuable.

Boxes, Packages and letters can be sent through Snail Mail ( US Postal Service ),

FedEX ( Federal Express )  and UPS ( United Parcel Service )

Using the below in processing address as the class number.

(Class # will change to reflect current info as he progresses through the pipeline at NNPTC)

USPS, FedEx, and UPS all make daily deliveries on base during the week, so if you can  send a package by those means, the student can receive it through the base mailing system.

Note – having items arrive before the student may have unpredictable results

 - Seahawks12, once you have his class # that should be a combination of a letter and numbers and you write it in place of Indoc. Also, before you address the package, I would take it to the post office and double check. My training has always been that the address is read from the bottom to the top, so broadest to most specific. If that is the case then the class # should be on the line above the actual address for NNPTC. The mailman just delivers to NNPTC. The mailroom petty officers are the ones who need to know the class #. 

This is the format the USPS shows when I did a zip code look up by the address on their website.

FYI - Amazon, FEDEX & UPS may need to have it marked like I indicated below with just the street address and then city, state, zip. Keep the class # above that. 

Depending on your PO, if you don't have the address exactly as they are able to read it, it will reject it when you go to send a package. We ran into that with my shipping things to my son's ship. Our metro postal system seemed to be updated a lot more electronically than another mom who lived in a very small town. Her post office took the package just as we had been told, but when I went to take my package with the same address to our PO and they put it into their electronic system, it rejected it. I did a lot searching using the zip code look up to figure out how to enter it correctly. It had to do with the box #. But it was rather frustrating. The address to the mailroom at Goose Creek should be easy enough.

MomofJoseph, thank you so much!  His first day of class was today.  Not sure of what happens on the first day.  I hope he had a good first day of class.  He is a EM.

Seahawks12 - Your son's first day may depend. If he got any paperwork or other information that needed to be shared with him out of the way during Indoc, then they will probably hit the floor running with instruction. Be sure to read through my discussion above, Nuke A school daily schedule

Feel free to ask your sailor about any updates to what I have shared and then post a comment at the end. I added to that discussion as my son progressed. My son was an ET, so some of their classes were slightly different. As I recall, they did one subject at a time in A school. In Power school they did 3 subjects, and all of the rates were together, I believe. My son commented on how the three different rates ended up helping each other with their work depending on what the subject was and who had more training with which one. 

I had an amazing birthday - one last family vacation. It was like the old days (pre Navy) - went to Hawaii with hubby, sis, her hubby, neice, nephew, and best of all, my son (and his GF). My heart was singing with joy!! Best time ever but did feel extra sad as it neared the end. Mourning the future family vacations son will miss…. I know you all can relate. 

My son had his NEC (?) restored last week and got his soft orders so I’m guessing he’s down to a month or two before moving on. Looks like he’ll be going to Pearl Harbor. That’s his first choice. He really wanted an S9G but he says there were none in San Diego. So, San Diego was his second choice (the entire families 1st choice since we live an hour away)! I am happy for him that it looks like he’ll get the boat he wants. I guess one of the subs out of Pearl is going to be Co-Ed but he asked for the other one. I think he has a buddy already on the boat he wants too. Offered him his extra bedroom while he gets situated. That’s a big relief. Anyway, it’s starting to get real. I hope he comes home on his way there. We will have one huge party to send him on his way! 

HK in That poem is spot on. Add pride to the list of emotions tho.
