My husband loves beef jerky! I send bathroom items every two months since packages take anywhere from 3-6 weeks to get to them also any sort of snacks that he likes. Also a big thing my husband shares is brownie brittle I send big bags to him and he shares with his crew!
Beef Jerky!!! Puzzle books, sports magazines, newspapers, pics from home, snacks. Be mindful of things that melt, esp chocolate! Someone recently wrote that hard candy they sent had melted into a huge lump.
Pack food items in one box, non-food items in another. Liquids are strongly not suggested but if you must, individually wrap those in zip-loc bags and tape up. I pack all items inside a huge garbage bag lining the box. Protects all items from other packages that might spring a leak! Tape all corners well with packaging tape.
I heard from my son yesterday. He seems to be in good spirits. Says they are staying really busy. I'm getting a big care package together for him right now. The last one included foot spray and lots of candy which he really appreciated both. And, I sell Scentsy and sent him scent paks for his rack and he was extremely grateful for those. lol.
hey all just thought I would give an update so I talked to my husband last night and he had gotten 2 of my packages in like 2 weeks so thats awesome I was hoping he would have gotten it for 4th of july as one was themed for that but oh well better early than never. Also we do not talk about what is going on other than if he is ok which he reminds me that he is on a carrier and very well protected. Hope this eases some minds also if anyone is interested the president is making a speech at 1230 ET today about the issues if any wants to watch that its on fox news or im sure cnn
We've had quite a rush of new members recently, must be due to the events going on with the ship. Welcome to everyone who is new to the group, we look forward to you joining in.
COLLEEN, it would be great if there was a Airline that had discount prices for Service Members Family. Good luck to your daughter and hope you will soon be able to go visit.
COLLEEN!!!!! HI, CHICK!!!! Nice to see your smiling pic of you and your daughter! Hope you get to go visit her ASAP. Too bad she can't buy you a ticket and get a discount through the military.
With the discussion of care packages I thought I'd share an idea we used in our last box to my cousin. Always heard some don't get any mail, but didn't know if my cousin knew any, or their names. So, we just made a couple little envelopes with a granola bar, candy, gum, etc. + a note. Put them in my cousin's box, and told him he could give them to those who don't get mail if he'd like. He reported he shared them, and they said to thank us. Just thought the idea might come in handy for someone else...
I have a question about people wanting to send packages to the sailors. How would we list any names when we can't put them here? I emailed my son to see if he knows anyone that does not get anything so I thought before he answers might be a good time to ask.
Hi Everyone, What a crazy time this is! I got my first call from Edward from the ship on Thursday. It was wonderful to hear his voice. I miss him so much and when we got off the phone my eyes filled up with tears. This is hard! He didn't sound that perky which made me a little concerned. He is not one to put all his feelings out there. I don't know if he is just tired, disappointed about the port call be canceled or maybe the deployment is wearing on him.
On a different subject, he is very uncomfortable with the bed and I would like to send some type of mattress pad. Any ideas? is there a type that could be rolled up or folded to mail to him?
Ed'sMom I just bought a mattress topper for my son at Costco Novaform® 3" Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper. It had great reviews. I shipped it in the box it came in (with a lot of extra tape). The cost to ship was $30 due to the size of the box.
Hey everyone. Brand new to the group. Still trying to figure out how to navigate through all of this. I didn't know if the sailors still could receive packages and what are some ideas of items to send. I can only communicate with my son through emails and they are short. My mom has gotten him phone cards but I tell him to save the minutes to talk to his son. My heart sank when I saw the news about where they were. I know that is what they do, but just like each one of you, I can only think "not my child"(or spouse/parent/family member). This has made me realize more than ever how much he is my little boy even though he is a grown man with a child of his own.
Welcome to all the new members. Your not alone Navy's Brays Mom, many of despite the fact they are grown men and woman are still our children and this is hard.
I was texting my daughter today with sad news of the sudden passing of her Oma (grandma) yesterday. It is hard to text news like that. But we are proud of her for knowing her job is to stay on the ship and do her job. I just wish I could give her a hug and kiss at this time. God Bless her and all the sailors and their families.
Ideas for care packages: Jerky (the ALL seem to request this), foot care items, BLACK socks (I think I heard on here white is not allowed), gel insoles, puzzle magazines, newspapers, sports magazines (or whatever they like), lip balm, sunscreen, sun glasses (in case if they loose/break theirs), Emergen-C (powdered pack to put into water for extra vitamins - or something like it), small calendar with things written inside so they know what is going on back home, snacks, granola bars, cookies, anything that does not melt in 100 degree heat (although some hard candy has been reported to show up in one HUGE glob).
If sending liquids, wrap securely in a plastic, zip-loc bag and tape up. Don't want something leaking all over your sailor's package - let alone other's packages. Containers of liquid drinks and other things that might explode STRONGLY not suggested!!! Lots of pictures of home so they can place in their locker (and a roll of tape to hang them up). Before you pack, place a garbage bag in the box and put all items in it. That way, if someone else's box explodes, your sailors will be nice and dry on the inside :-)
So sorry for your family's loss. I understand this pain. I had to tell my son his uncle died May 20th and now his papa is not doing well and we will probably be losing him. Prayers and blessings your way to your family.
Cjteeze so sorry to hear the loss of your love one. I can't imagine having to tell our Sailor such news.I pray your Sailor and family is strong during this time.
MarianneKT's Mom, how do you package them? Is there anything special you do in the recipe? (like I think some people have suggested replacing butter with oil or something...)
CousinSarah - I have always just put them in freezer quart size Ziploc bags. I cook with butter, or whatever the recipe calls for. My daughter has said to cook them 'a minute less than how you like them' since they 'cook' in transit.
morgantracy.....if only i could make those and not burn it I would so had sent him that instead he gets the prepackages ones you buy at the store.....go figure i can make a souffle or anything else but rice crispys nope....lol
My son called last night and said things are going well out there. He said the ship was very busy right after the news broke and they made their move but says things have calmed down some and everyone seems to have found their groove. Said it is MUCH HOTTER where they moved to.
Pattyb I sent my husband and email this morning stating that it was half way!!!! He is right its all down hill from here if we have made it half way then what the extra days and the time just keeps getting smaller and smaller!!!
PLEASE! Remember as the time comes closer to their return ~ DO NOT POST DATES ON HERE!! ~
Heard stories of how loved ones on another ship posted on public media such as this a return date and the ship stayed out 2 weeks longer due to breach of information. So, please be mindfull of our dates - don't post them :-)
If you like to send packages, you can join Molly's Adopt A Sailor for the July adoption......JULY 2014 ADOPTION - ENG/DC Crew onboard the USS GEORG E H. W. BUSH (CVN 77)..........and if you like to sew pillowcases, you can join their 'We Stitch Love' group
