Alright everyone I need some help. I am coming down to Norfolk next week to look at some homes and my moms birthday is during that week as well. I need some great restaurants to take her to she likes steak and potatoes......
My sailor is on the LARGEST aircraft carrier in the world with enough fire power to take out Russia and standing strong with +5,000 other personnel with the most advanced technology known to man. They are safer than I am right now!
When people ask me if I'm worried, I tell them that and they know I'm not worried. Just very proud :-)
I know being on the carrier their very safe but the mom part of me still worries for my son and his shipmates...I also got an email from my son late last night and one today, it was so good to hear from him.
I also got a email from my Sailor he was awarded CS of the month, very proud of him. I just love when I hear from him makes my day. Very proud of all our loved ones and the amazing job they are doing.
My son was on the flight deck fueling jets last night. He said watching the destroyers do their thing was one of the most awesome and amazing things he's seen so far.
question: if you mailed something prior to the mail cut off date will they still receive it even if it hasnt made it there by the mail cut off date? Will mail sent off before then still make it? thanks
Probably can't say on here due to security regulations. PLEASE DO NOT POST DATES ON HERE. I'd tell you in private but I have no idea when the mail cut off is for them to receive while they are out.
NOT saying no dates but my sailor told me the date has passed
I'm just totally bummed because I mailed his birthday gift in there and I mailed it way before the date he gave me
I just sent a package on Monday but I asked on this site first and the response I got said I would be fine to mail it then as it was well before the cutoff date given at the FRG meeting.
I don't want to know a specific date, or whether or not we've reached it (don't want to get to much info out there). But I have a question about in general about mail at the end of deployments (this is our family's first deployment). I know at some point packages should no longer be sent, does the same go for letters/cards? ...or will they just follow them back here? ...or...
There are meetings held at Norfolk before deployment. Not good if you live +100 miles away and can't make 'em.
My sailor's first too, dianem but I've learned that:
1. Your sailor has to tell their CO the names of people coming to see them return. Not on list - no entrance in.
2. There is a meeting the night before they return but again, your sailor has to tell his CO to have the names of those wanting to go to that on THAT list too.
If you are like me, you hate learning as you go. Need a handbook for loved ones that are not located at Norfolk.
Ur sailor has to email the frg to add u to the email list . Cvn77frg@cvn77frg.org. We can not disclose meeting days or locations over the Internet so the best way to get the info is to be added to the list. They also have a frg facebook page where u can find merchandise and stuff.
Also, there is only one list for both the FRG's night before reception and homecoming day. Definitely have your sailor email the FRG with your name and relationship so you will be on their email list. An email will be send out with details of the night before reception approx. 36 hours before. When they get the email from your sailors ship email address. they will send an email to you. Or at least that's how it went for us.
Thanks stuntsmom! I guess if it'll just be sent on to Norfolk after cutoff, I could keep sending it after that (whether that date is past, present, or future, not giving out any info here :) ), and he'll get it eventually.
Did any of you watch CNN couple hours ago - "Legal View with Ashleigh Banfield"? They showed LIVE footage of the USS Bush, take-offs and landings. I filmed the TV screen haha....
No sign of my son on the flight deck but he works nights and was daytime there.
The night before homecoming reception for my sailor's last deployment was very nicely done. Get there early!
My problem was just getting there. I didn't know that area and the GPS couldn't keep up. When the road split and the GPS told me to stay to the left, it didn't tell me if I should take the bridge or the tunnel until after I made an incorrect choice! It figures, right?!
I took a few scenic detours but I finally made it. Well worth attending!
"The Navy has approved a special provision granting hardship duty pay to sailors and Marines who are deployed beyond 220 consecutive days, service officials said.
The newly established Hardship Duty Pay, effective as of Wednesday, will pay sailors and Marines an extra $16.50 per day when they are operationally deployed beyond 220 consecutive days. Overall, the amount is not to exceed a monthly rate of an extra $495, Navy officials said."
Imminent duty pay will be reinstated for the USS George H. W. Bush and other ships in the same area of operation!
For months now, I've been sending emails to just about everyone in D.C., (President Obama, VP Biden, Sec. Def. Hagel, and my Congressional folks) asking them if they have any plans to reinstate the imminent danger pay that was discontinued in June.
I got a call from a staff member at the White House, shocked the heck out of me, saying that Sec. Def. Hagel will be reinstating the imminent danger pay. Full details will be in the letter that I'll be getting in the mail.
Glad that our sailors will be getting a little extra money to compensate them for the incredibly long hours they're on duty.
Hopefully "This Week" gets uploaded to you tube or something later today so we can watch. ABC in this area apparently doesn't air that show, and ABC says live streaming isn't available here either for some reason.
thanks for your diligence Laura! it is truly appreciated.. thanks for posting the article southngal... and I'm in Texas and the George Stephanopoulos show is on covering the 5th fleet!!!!! on abc.. thanks Denise I was watching golden girls this is much BETTER!
I've been trying to find the video of The ABC News report but can only find a very short version. Has anyone found the whole report, I'd like to share it with my family today. Thanks in advance.
Thank you NavyWife 1008, there was more to the report where she spoke with other Sailor's and report on 18,000 meals each day. It was longer and more in depth.

Got an email from my son this morning so as of now they still can communicate.
