  • MarianneKT's Mom

    Welcome aboard Sharonbell1!

  • Mahler

Happy birthday to your son, Stuntsmom! I hope his buddies were good to him. I believe I saw, this dplymnt, they have a huge birthday cake for everyone's birthdays, each month.

Then again, it may have been her friend's ship I saw that pic on. But it's a nice spirit-boosting idea so they may all follow that same m.o.
  • SailorMom94

Mahler yes each month they have a cake, my son didn't get any of his as he was working nights. It's a very sweet idea
  • stuntsmom

    thanks Mahler :-)

Have you all heard of the concept of lighting a candle, all supporters, all together? It's done at the same hour, once a month. A neat idea, to know, in unison, there are candles lit for our troops. So I'm lighting my turquoise seas candle, is how Pier One Imports describes this very appropriately named scent. I'll add my "serenity" candle to the mix, as well. Nothing but good thoughts for our men, women and their families. ;)
  • sailor93mom

Mahler...do you know when this lighting of the candles takes place? Hoping it's on a Sunday when I am off work:)

Spoke to my son today via facebook messenger and by phone. Enjoying some down time and sounded really good.

  • lavendergrl8

my son messaged me on fb but then i didnt hear form him   are they in a port? thanks

  • Mahler

Hey Lavendergrl8- I never know what the heck is up 'til long afterwards. I'm sure a month from now, you'll have more info., and so will I, on what was up with your sailor-- the month prior. That's just our luck. Even then, we don't get briefed in full.

That's one of the best things about post deployment. Until that time comes, I'll go nuts. But I've bought a couple of books on places across the globe--and I might get one more, on foreign recipes, so we can sit with a glass of wine and talk in my adirondack chairs about days gone by... whatever is allowable....

Hopefully, the wine will be brought home from my sailor's deployment. :)
  • Mahler

sailor 93mom, I prefer to light candles during the day, or I'd fall asleep with candles lit. I think WE can light candles for and say a prayer, put out vood vibes, or. Anytime that is good for US.

I like to light a candle when I'm emailing my sailor, or when I'm having a quiet day to chill. Both my kids like it, though.

And it gives me something pleasant to talk about. mojo, as anita in Ohio puts it
  • scootersmom94

    Good Morning Navy Family,

I have been meaning to log on and post but life has been CRAZY as I'm sure it is for all of you!!

I have been following along and reading all these awesome posts and I wish to say "Congratulations!!" to all your Sailors who have been achieving their goals and many accolades as well as" Happy Birthday!!" to those Sailors who have had their days come and go as my Sailor has.

My Sailor is terrible with communication, he doesn't email at all. He calls sporadically and when he does.....it warms my heart, I hate him being away from home so far but he is doing what he loves and I support him to the moon and back. I am thankful to him and to ALL our service members who give selflessly of themselves so that we can enjoy our many freedoms. I look forward to homecoming and am counting the days! He did just call me last night after 3 very long weeks. I must say it was great to hear his voice.

I have been living vicariously through all of you and your connections with your Sailors. I am so happy for all the communications to all us families on the home front as we are all feeling the same things in terms of missing our loved ones. It is a great comfort having you all here even though I don't post often. I am here every day.

I'd like to say a hearty warm and love filled "Welcome" to all the newest members of our group!

That being said....I've got to get back to work.

    HOOYAH!!

Godspeed to all our Sailors on CVN 77

    (and all our Military family)

  • Mahler

Sorry, I messed up my comment... who knows how.

But I like describing pleasant things to my sailor, to unwind her before bed, or before she goes to bust her butt.... even if it's just how pretty the color and scent of my latest candle is.

We've always been fond of emailing about days gone by, as well (which is the name of my next poem, written for the crew (as many as they'll forward it to). Last time one poem went all over the place. Sometimes my poetry about bada$$es just gets forwarded amongst the dept. only, sometimes they vet read at gathering halls.

They just like to know people, who don't even know them, sometimes, are thinking about them-- and care.

    They're a pretty cool crew. :)

I've given up hope of seeing any pictures of the pinning ceremony for the ESWS awards.  Hope it's in the yearbook.

  • Anita n Ohio

I have no idea when mine got theirs.  I just know when they passed the test and that was months ago.  I kept looking for it on Facebook hoping the powers that be would at least post them there....guess not :-(

  • Anita n Ohio

    Congrats to your sailor, Tonya!!!!

  • SailorMom94

Tonya 2 she looks so happy and proud. I know you are too, congratulations.
  • SailorMom94

Tonya M I love how you put that lol. It's so hard to let them go but such a true blessing to know they have grown into amazing adults.
  • lavendergrl8

Thanks Mahler~ :-) cant wait to see all our sailors....Def will be sharing a glass of wine ....

Laura, I found some comprehensive info. on watchstanding, in general, on a wikipedia site. They even used a pic from the ship as an example. The watchstander was, in this case, using binoculars, looking out the window with a beautiful sunset in view.

I don't know if you needed info. on supervisers, in particular, but they surely do seem to be committed to keeping a visual on even the inside engineering/mechanical, or whatever, stuff that ensures proper navigational stuff is going on in tip top form (not just the course outside). :)

It makes me proud of how efficient and together our Navy is. No stone left unturned.

That's what I came up with. Oh, also, there's a pdf on seabee watch stuff.
  • SailorMom94

Ok group got a question. I was trying to figure out how to get to the homecoming. But my Sailor is saying that he and his group will be leaving soon after arriving to head back to where they are stationed. Does anyone know if it is really that fast a turn around before leaving. I was thinking Thurs through Monday. First deployment so all new to us.
  • Dad of Sailor

Laura, PPWS is the Propulsion Plant Watch Supervisor which is an important qual for Nuclear folks. Watch supervisors are the ones in charge of the plant during each watch cycle. They are in charge of all the other watchstanders. Congrats to her.

  • Dad of Sailor

    SailorMom,

Yes, the ones that are stationed elsewhere will leave shortly after the ship arrives back in port. They all want to get back to their families and get "home" so they don't keep them around very long.

  • Mahler

Sailor Mom 93, I found the following when searching "blue candle, navy, lighting".  It's from an older Navyformoms post.  They also showed this candle lighting idea on a Navyfordads site.

One thought:  we could all light a candle for them on "Mojo Mondays", "Thoughtful Thursdays", Pyche 'Em Up Saturdays or Sundays", "Tip Our Hats Tuesdays'", "Well Wishes Wednesdays", or "Fire 'Em Up" Fridays.

    Here's what I copied:

    Event Description

Welcome to all Moms and we invite you to join us throughout the future Year to light a blue candle in honor of our sailors, past, present and future to honor the service and sacrifice they each give by being away from their families...We honor the Military for the sacrifice they make 24/7/365. Light a blue candle on Holidays, Birthdays, Memorials and celebrate the lives of our Navy and Military that keeps our hearts and lives free. In your own home, or wherever you are at. LET YOUR BLUE CANDLE SHINE. You can rsvp that you will STATE YOUR CITY AND STATE, then comment on Birthdays, honor to someone throughout the year.... Keep the Blue Candle Burning. visit the group too of Home for A Holiday/by the BLUE CANDLE MOMS. Happy 4th of July

This copied info. was from 2011, maybe.

Ya'll can tell your sailors I'm lighting a candle for them all.  I just got some new blue votives so I'm good to go.  :)

  • NavyMomDPL

    Mahler

What a great idea, gonna do that at least once a week.

  • Anita n Ohio

Just be careful if you own cats!   Blue candle nights are special but don't burn the house down!!!!

  • sailor93mom

Thank you very much Mahler! :) I love candles, anyway. I use them for relaxation purposes mostly. And to bring good vibes when I've had a bad day.

    Just a kwinkadink...
My daughter -sailor 93 was born on Memorial day 1993. She been in almost two years. Got to Skype with her yesterday and it was Awesome!!! I get emails on occasion, but getting to actually see her was just, well, fanfreakingtastic! I gave only seen pictures and heard her beautiful voice since she was 15 y/o due to living in different states, and our relationship was very rocky the last couple of years. So seeing and talking to her was very refreshing. I missed her High School grad and basic training grad so I'm trying really hard to be able to go see her when they get back.

My other daughter just signed up for another 6 years this last summer. She's a SeaBee (CE) and says that she hasn't been on a ship. We talk and text a lot.

Sorry, getting all babbly. I usually just sit back and read to keep up with what's happening.
  • stuntsmom

question: my sailor has been in over ten years and in the past when he was relocated he didn't have anything he couldn't just pack up and put in his car.. well now he has accumulated a lot of things since being in Virginia... would we have to get a uhaul to move him to his next duty station? how does that work? he has to move fairly quickly when they get back
    thanks
  • SailorMom94

FYI for all. Our Sailor got a letter from Navy Federal which I'm sure lots have. They in formed us that there was unusual active, thank God I can help monitor it and there were several transaction made.
  • Dad of Sailor

    stuntsmom,

NO, the Navy will arrange to move him or he can do it himself and get reimbursed. Either way he needs to arrange it through the personal property office before hand.

  • stuntsmom

    thanks dad

Hello everybody. I just read some great stuff after searching "navy, opsec" or "navy, phishing". And "navy, social media", I'm sure would b great too.

I had been reading some Navy news and these were sidebar articles I didn't have time to read, originally. They are, indeed, very informative.

For instance, I'm not very tech savy, but I never enter my contact info. in order to comment on an article I've read on military stuff. And I haven't accepted a Skype request from an "unknown", nor a friend request from a very religeous-type posting female in Gana (west Africa-- but i did check out her page, which, she had mostly African named friends).

I just try to be very careful, and often reword what I post before I tap the posting button.

Last deployment, some folks I know posted things that, when I had notified my sailor of the posts, she was concerned as well.

Just a reminder to be cautious, for any "first deployment " folks. And the Navy military member's guidelines are pretty good and prudent judgement concepts for us all.

Worth reading up on. Phishing is when, via email, they try to get your contact or personal (financial, for instance) info. from a person... you know, those people with ill intentions....

Alright all got a question so I think I just learned that my sailor did not add me or his mother to the list for homecoming. Now with that being said and without giving information away I know the night before party they tell you all the good stuff and what to expect. Now if I can't go because I am not on that list how will I know the time or what pier they will be pulling into?
  • TLC72

rikki- From what I understand, if you're not on the list and can't attend the night before, then you can't get on base for homecoming. Unless you have a military ID yourself, of course.

  • TLC72

Seems like forever ago when this sight was the GHWB relieving the Truman. Made my day to wake up to this.

  • rikki_100113

I talked to the ombudsman and because I have a military Id I can get on the base and I can escort my MIL but how will I know when or where ? Will that be something the ombudsman or the frg will give out?
  • TLC72

That I don't know. However, I would think it won't be too hard to figure out with that many people attending the same event. I'm sure with so many people traveling in from out of state, not everyone will be in town in time to attend the night before reception (I don't know if we'll be there in time), so I would think it wouldn't be too hard to figure out. At least that's what I'm hoping incase we don't get there.

  • rikki_100113

Yea I am hoping all the information will be given the night before they pull in but who knows.
  • NavyMomDPL

If we are on the list for the homecoming does that put us on the list for the night before party as well. My sailor says he is asking about the night before and no one can give him the information. What a wonderful posting this morning made my heart so happy.

  • Anita n Ohio

My sailor told me the same thing (same list for night before and for the day of homecoming).

If you can, I strongly recommend getting there two days before they return if you are driving.  Our drive is 12 hours and believe me, you are dragging when you arrive.  Plus it gives you a chance to see the area at your own pace before they arrive.

Unless I hear otherwise, we're going to go to the gate closest to the NEX.

  • TLC72

We're driving also (14hrs). Our ETA is sometime the afternoon before, so no time for sight seeing beforehand, as I'm sure we'll be pressed for time.
