Ever get so mad, you figure you'll NEVER be that mad again?
Well, I been there. Done that and today I'm even madder than when my unlicensed sailor bought a car 4 years ago.
Now, they had it in a lot for storage. My sailor did NOT pay up front the fee for when they would be deployed to the lot...and long story short - the lot sold the car without telling them. I'm so mad at my sailor I can't see straight. Plus - the lot marks those cars that are owned by sailors and I was told that the lot would not be allowed to sell them due to them being military. So I don't know which one I want to kill first. My child or the lot.
The car was paid in full, they just got coverage on it because they were going to get it out of storage....they went today to the Virginia DMV and they told them the car belonged to Metro (whatever that is).
I told my sailor to contact the lot (no one there on a weekend to deal with this issue - of course) and to contact JAG (Navy lawyer). I only hope something comes out of this because if it doesn't - I've wasted travel costs to plan to go to Norfolk, go on that family cruise and drive that car back.
Anita, so sorry to hear that. That is a major bummer for sure. Am I understanding that she did not pay the storage place at all while on deployment and up until now?
Anita, firstly I owe you one for letting us all know about the upcoming event and deadlines-- hope to be able to meet you there--
about the car lot-- you got my "mother temper" up too--but I would not settle for the car being gone that easily-- I would follow up with whoever metro is and leave no stone unturned until I got some satisfaction-- even it if meant going to the press- this is no way to treat our military and how do you sell a car without a title. I have the feeling you may be dealing with an unscrupulous car lot-- and doing other sailors a favor by following up
lbimom: I hear you. I just went to the county tax office and raised Cain. Here in PA, I think we are the only state that allows military members to be taxed on income on a county level. But, that is only if they live in Pennsylvania. It's a relatively new thing, and the county tax office has sent my son nasty letters about wanting copies of his orders. Well first year, he was just in boot camp...civilians don't get orders to boot camp. Next year, they didn't like it that his orders were issued in March. They don't seem to understand that orders are not like W-2's and aren't issued in January of each year. I told them, he got issued orders in Feb to the GW, and is unlikely to get orders again for several years. I was mad enough that I wrote a letter to our local state level representative.
Ibimom - do a hotel search on the zip code 23505 and that should get you close. I don't want to mention a hotel name on here due to regulations on this page. If you private message me I can give you a few names there.
When we were there for homecoming, we stayed at the Hampton Inn right outside the gate we used to get on base. It was a very nice stay and I highly recommend it.
I have a different perspective on this. Driving a few miles from base only takes maybe 15 minutes. I like to stay somewhere near things to do like nice dining, beach etc. My perspective is somewhat jaded as I'm a veteran (navy), My husband was Army, and we've been on many military installations. When we were off duty spending time in a motel close to base was not a priority.
I live here in hampton roads . I was in norfolk and now I'm in va beach. My sons grandmother just came and got a great deal in a hotel 35 a night . It was easy access to Internet and middle between the beach and base . Here is a link to a list of hotels in va beach hotels.va beCh 23452 . I beleive she stayed at econo lodge . I lived near the base in norfolk and the motels close to base are nice . I stayed at the navy lodge before they are pretty nice as well . Here is a link to norfolk hotels.by the base.norflk va the 2 that are first and say hampton blvd are closest to the base . If anyone has questions about hotels or things to do while your here I can help. The beach is nice and we love mount trashmore which is a park they made out of a dump but it's very nice .
Hi Everyone,
I haven't been on here for a while but I had to weigh in on this. I just took my sons younger siblings down to visit him in VA for Easter weekend.
We stayed at the Marriott Courtyard VA beach. It was beautiful. All the room face the ocean and I am a rewards member so points add up for free rooms or upgrades.
It was before the season so not crowded but I hear it gets really crazy in summer and rates go up.
We did an Easter cruise lunch on the Spirit of Norfolk and it went past all the Navy vessels and they gave commentary about them. Very cool for the kids!
ed'smom: I'm a Marriott rewards member too. I have learned to be 'picky' about motels, since I have traveled a fair amount. I like good clean mattresses, a quiet room, safety and a nice breakfast. Usually the Marriott is my first choice. I also don't mind a 15-30 min drive to have those things. I usually look up and read reviews on tripadviser. Most often the difference between a really nice motel and a so-so motel is a short drive and 20 bucks.
No matter where you stay, no matter how many STARS they have...always, ALWAYS - check for bed bugs before you enter the room with your luggage. Pull back all the corners on the bed and check to see if you see anything under the mattress pads and sheets!!
You don't want to take home any extra pets with you!!!
I contacted Portrait Works to find out when the cruise book will be sent. Their response was, "They should have started being shipped on Friday, May 1."
Nothing beats an air show put on by the Navy! WOOO HOOO!!! What a time! Had a few people that didn't quiet get their sea legs (were a bit GREEN if you know what I mean). Time spent on aircraft carrier was priceless. Food - eh, not so much.
Trip to get to Norfolk was a major P.I.T.A. Hubby can now cross off his bucket list "take a nap on an aircraft carrier". Got to hang out in sailor's work area and meet some of the fellow sailors and their families.
Wore a University of Cincinnati shirt and had many come up to me, "HEY! I'm from Cincinnati too!" or "I went to UC! Go Bearcats!!!"
I'm here to visit my son, this weekend! Ship was. Supposed to come in this morning from their 3 day underway?? Getting worried I haven't heard from him yet? Anyone hear from their son or daughter on the Bush?
I wouldn't worry, Mom. The Navy has their own schedule. They may not be in until 11:59pm. And as always - remember - no news is good news. He's probably very busy getting ready to come back into port so forgive him for not contact you. You'll see him soon!!!
On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. he single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.
Checking with those who have more knowledge... my sailor got the results of the E4 rate test today, he said that he passed (YAY!), but because of quotas, would not advance. How disappointing for him, especially since he has test anxiety. Does this happen often and what happens now?
Depends, Dawnette. My sailor had to advance or else be kicked out. There is a side clause but I'm not sure if it will happen for them. Most want to just put in 4 years and get out. Mine doesn't! They want to make it a career. Of their div, NO ONE ADVANCED (not saying they didn't pass, but the powers that be choose to only advance a certain number). I can only think this was for the WHOLE NAVY - not just a number on The Bush. Of my sailor's dept - only three (out of a couple hundred) advanced.
I'll know around the end of the month of July whether my sailor will still be in the Navy or booted out. I'm praying that the powers that be keep them in.
It's commin to pass and not advance . They have to fill a certain qouta . They must make rank by higher tenure or they will be forced out . It's different for all ranks up to e6 where it stops and they can retire . I know the its 14 years for second class because my husband hits it in July and we are being forced out . It's devestating . Good luck to all of your sailors
Ok, prayers it all works out. It is a shame that the ones that want to stay in can't and have to jump through hoops. At the same time we spend tons of money to recruit new ones that we have no idea will make it or not.
My refrigerator is fully stocked and homemade shepherds pie ready - that can only mean one thing - my sailor is on his way home on leave :). Feeling excited
Well, in less than a week I guess my sailor will be leaving the Navy. I'm very sad for this, I enjoyed being apart of this page. If you don't mind, I'd like to keep this page to stop by once in a while and see how you are.
VERY UPSET BY THIS. LET EVERYONE KNOW, once you are in, there is no promise they will keep you :-(
So sorry to hear this Anita for both you and your Sailor.
Has she sought legal counsel from the legal office to ensure she's exhausted all options? She should be entitled to separation pay for being involuntary separated. She also needs to be evaluated by the VA for any service related medical issues.
Make sure she has EVERY medical issue documented on her separation physical as she needs proof she was dealing with it while in the service.
We all hope you stay on the page and keep in touch. We're interested to hear what the next chapter of her life brings.
Does she have the Post 911 GI Bill? If so you need to encourage her to go to college and use that money to get her degree. She earned it. If she doesn't have it she needs to get signed up for it and use it.
Feel free to contact me directly if you or her have any questions.
