Hello Navy Moms....My son leave BC March 19 anyone else around that time?

    My boyfriend leaves March 14

Craig, Another POA question. I think this has already been asked but I can't find the information. I found the POA (NAVJAG form 5801/11) on the Navydep.com website. Since it is an official Navy form and requires that witnesses had military id's, do we use it "as is" or can I take it and edit out "military" references?
    Thanks!
  • Craig

dragon - I would use it as a template and just retype it without the military info.  Remember, these forms were produced by the military.  They are 100% accurate and will hold up with any court.  They have had 100's of lawyers proofing them.  So I think they're alot better than Legal Zoom or those other websites.  Plus they're free.

Remember too, that your sailor can use base legal as a depper to get this type of stuff done.  This is one of those grey areas that the military allows since it has to do with him/her going into the military.  So it you're near a miltary base, just go to legal with his enlistment papers....

  • dragon7

    Thanks Craig!

  • Craig

Barbie - There is a reason for the POA, and yes they need it before they leave for boot camp.  They don't have time to get it there.

Go to this web link to read why I say it's a must have... It's a real eye opener of why you best make dang sure you have a POA...

  • Craig

Per the security clearance, It really depends if this information was disclosed, or not.

Example:  You go into the Navy as a Cryptlogist (CT).  You declared you had many speeding tickets.  The Navy decides you are not responsible to have a Top Secret clearance, they will allow you to cross into another rating.

However, suppose you had a bankruptcy, and you did not disclose this (This actually happened to a sailor on my website).  2 years later you need a security clearance for you job, they find out about the bankruptcy during their investigation.  Then you will be discharged for "Unsatisfactory Performance".  Read para 2d here:

    http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/milpersman/1000/190...

Per the Thrift Savings Plan, its good o get into.  If you get into it quick, you don't even notice the money being gone.  Everyone should save for their future...

  • Arwen

The biggest problem my son had with his security clearance was the fact that we moved a lot. We had to go back 10 years, they had to find at least one person (preferably two) from each of our old addresses who remembered him - not counting teachers and family members. It was a challenge because in all cases we never really got to know our neighbors (never knew their names), forgot their names, everyone we knew there moved at about the same time we did, and/or we never kept in touch.

  • Arwen

My son Sean (19) is working to get into the Navy, he’s getting closer with the weight and with a waiver for a high school knee injury, but he hasn’t been in a huge hurry. However, I have discovered that WorldCon (one of the biggest science fiction conventions in the world - held in a different city every year) will be held in Chicago on Labor Day weekend 2012. Therefore, whether he likes it or not, he has a target report date of June 24 — the date I calculate would be most likely to get me to Chicago for PIR that particular weekend!

  • Britt<3Corpsman Wife

I have a question for everyone... My husband is currently a DEPper. What benefits do we get right now as far as services go? I know we need to get his POA's done before he leaves for boot camp. Are we able to use legal on a base near us now to get this done? Is he able to shop at the NEX or Comissary? He does not have a DEP I.D. because the printer was broken the day he signed his contract. He just has a copy of his contract. Would that be sufficient enough to get him where he needs to go? I have read a TON of different things online, but I figured I would get everyone's opinions/experiences :) Thanks!

  • Arwen

You can use legal to get your POAs done, but that's pretty much it. The contract will get him on base and to legal, but it won't help with shopping.

NEX and commissary use requires a military (not DEP) ID. They're ridiculously strict on that. So strict that, once you have your own ID, you go shopping with your mother at the NEX, she cannot pay. The owner of the ID has to pay!

You can get your ID as soon as he sends you the paperwork from boot camp. You will take the paperwork to your nearest military base, and they will give you your dependent ID. Then you get to use NEX and commissary.

  • Britt<3Corpsman Wife

I just called the L.A. Air Force base and Naval Base San Diego legal Offices and both of them told me that they cannot help with POA's because he is still in DEP. That he has to have his enlisted I.D. and have completed boot camp before they can offer him any services. Does anyone have any advice?

  • Craig

Arwen - I have to disagree.  Deppers can shop at the NEX.  If someone says they can't, then they need to contact the manager and allow the manager to instruct their employee's on the proper rules.

Here is the rules (which shows the DOD directive):

    https://www.mynavyexchange.com/command/customer_service/p_faq.html

Also note per  Department of Defense regulations, a depper ARE NOT authorized commissary privileges during DEP. Once you actually start Active Duty service you'll be issued an Department of Defense ID card that authorizes commissary privileges.

Britt - I'm actually surprised that they will not do the POA.  I've never heard of anyone not being able to do it.  I tried to find the official JAG rules, but I cannot see anything that refers to DEP.  So, in the mean time, I would take one of the POA's that I have on my website, and leave all the normal info, and just remove the military titles and military specific items.  Any notary can notarize a POA (ie like any bank has a notary)

  • Britt<3Corpsman Wife

Thanks Craig! I found the same info online thru the NEX website, that's why I was asking if anyone had any experience with that. I am going to print out the POA's on your website and have my mom notarize them for us :) We still have about 5 months till he leaves, but I don't want to be waiting til the last minute to get everything together. Do you have any kind of checklist of things that generally need to be done before a recruit leaves for boot camp? I have started to create my own, but I feel like I'm not thinking of everything. (Like renewing drivers licenses... his will expire while he is in boot camp, calling credit card companies... stuff like that)

  • Jaimers

Hello Ladies.....they just called my son yesterday..his original ship date is March 19... they asked if he wants to leave next week Tues.. he said yes..OMG i wasnt prepared mentally for this ... They will let him know today for sure if he is leaving...

I cant believe we will be back at GL again ..this will be twice in 1 year.... (sigh)

    such a bittersweet journey......God Bless

    Jaime

  • KIM756

JaimeS, wow doesn't give you much time to process! I don't know if I could handle that! My son leaves on Tuesday too but we've know that for 6 months, 5 days? Ugh, I don't know! :) good luck to you and maybe we'll see you at PIR.
  • Arwen

Just be glad the Navy is too full for your kids to do to you what I did to my family and friends. I entered DEP on Monday and left for boot camp on Thursday. I'm not sure my mom has ever forgiven me for that.

  • mama c

Wow Arwen, I'm not sure I could have handled that.  I know he has been waiting a long time, but think has been helpful for our whole family to have time to get ready for the change.   My son also stated he would go earlier if there was a spot open, I prayed he wouldn't go earlier, but in hind site, I know he was ready and it would have been fine.

Jaimers, I know it is sudden, and personally I would probable be freaking out a bit, but I am sure he is ready and will keep you both in my prayers :)

  • mama c

Tomorrow's the big day, we head down to MEPS and then he is off Monday morning to GL.   Very emotional, but it's all good!

  • Jaimers

Good Morning Ladies .... Hope everyones weekend is well...WHEW ok they switched his ship date back to March 19th ...lol Thank God..they did however tell him be ready at any moment he may leave sooner.... This time around we will be prepared !!! Thanks MAMA C for your prayers....I am praying for you and your son !!  Fastening my seat belt for the journey ahead :) Prayers to you KIM756 :)

  • Arwen

Mama c, one of the main reasons I chose to enter so fast was because of my mom's reaction. She's really, really anti-military, and very clingy, and I knew the longer I was home, the more worked-up she would get. I figured that if I could get out of there before the shock wore off there would be less hysterics involved. I actually had the chance to to leave for boot camp the same day I went to MEPS for my ASVAB, but I needed to gird myself for what was about to happen.

  • Dustin's Mom

Hi Barbie - from this site, I've learned that a simple black watch will be ok.  Same issue with my son, so we got one.  He's had to get used to wearing it!  Mine leaves Monday - it is coming FAST!

  • Dustin's Mom

It was analog.  We picked a pretty inexpensive one since we didn't know if he would get used to wearing it.....prayers to you and your family as you hug him good-bye for awhile.  I seem to tear up all day and usually it is over the silliest of things.  He's getting tired of hugging, I think - ha!  Blessings - let us know how it goes!

  • Arwen

They're not allowed to actually *wear* their watches while at boot camp. The watches are kept in their valuables drawer and brought out only for PIR.

And don't worry about them needing to tell the time. Everything is done as a group, announced ahead of time, and there are huge clocks on every wall. When the RDCs aren't there, the recruit in charge (Recruit Master Chief Petty Officer/RCPO) and the recruit Master at Arms are in charge of watching the time and telling the other recruits what to do. Because they use 2400 time, they actually give lessons on how to read Navy clocks and do Navy time.

  • Craig

Per the watch, there is nothing in the Navy uniform regulations saying what the color should be.  All it says is:

    e.  Wristwatch/Bracelets.  While in uniform, only one of each may be worn.  Ankle bracelets are not authorized while in uniform.

    http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/support/uniforms/uniformregul...

However, with that said, you do not want your recruit to be more visible than others.  You want them to blend in.  You want at the end of boot camp for the RDC to say to them "You were in my boot camp division?"

So, if you plan on buying a watch, buy a black one.  It doesn't show like a Gold or Silver watches.  Secondly, if they do wear a watch, it becomes part of their uniform, thus it becomes an item for for inspection.  It gives them one more items that they can be penalize for.  Why risk it just before PIR?  I wouldn't wear a watch in boot camp.  It's not like you have a hot date waiting for you.

    A totally awesome video...

Happy Solstice everyone! May your winter be bright with the love of your family and friends.

  • happyfeet(ship 09/Div 288)

I have a question-- My daughters' friend just came home on leave from school and he told me that bc is now 12 + 1 p weeks. Is this true, or is he pulling my leg? Thanks for any info to clear this up...Merry Christmas all!

Does my son need to take his social security card, birth certificate, drivers license or anything to MEPs?

  • Craig

jackie - I wrote the attached for the deppers on my website.  It will probably help you too...

    VETS_HELPING_SAILORS_MEPS.pdf

  • Hannah88

Just wondering if anyone knows why we had to provide an original copy of his dad's death certificate at MEPS? Especially since we did that at the recruiter's when we filled out all the initial paperwork. Is this a document I should just make sure he has with him all the time, like his social security card?

  • jackiequeen/ship09div076

thanks for the information Craig but my son is already done all the steps, he heads to boot on Jan 5 and I didnt know if he needed to take any documentation with him.  We finally talked to his recruiter and he said he would need to take his drivers license and social security card with him to meps before going to boot.

  • Craig

Hannah - Your son is a minor.  It is required that he has that death certificate.  Once he reaches 18, and will never need that form again.  Here is the rule...

  • Craig

  • Hannah88

Thanks, Craig. So we'll bring it again next Tuesday and that will be it (hopefully, since he turns 18 in May and this will be our 2nd trip to MEPS in two weeks :) ).

  • jackiequeen/ship09div076

Craig - that helped tremendously. I was not aware they could take an address book or anything.  Just their wallet, we were going to put some addresses in there.

  • Craig

jackie - Here is more info from the official website.

    http://www1.netc.navy.mil/nstc/rtcgl/what_to_bring.asp

If I were you, I'd go though each of those tabs on that link...

  • jackiequeen/ship09div076

Craig...this site and people like you are God sends...Thank you, thank you for all your help!

  • Arwen

The list below is what the Navy website says is allowed, but it is is still not the list the RDCs actually use when they get there. Many of the items recruits are told they can bring get sent back in the box with their clothes.

    *Wrist watch, wedding ring.
OK, but they will not get to wear the watch until PIR. It will be stuck in their locking drawer and left there for two months.

*Religious medallion (No larger than the size of a dog tag).
    OK

    *Writing material (NO bottled ink).
It will be sent back, and recruits will receive Navy envelopes and stationery. Do send stamps.

    *Pocket dictionary.
It will probably be sent back

*Pocket bible (or other religious text).
OK, but make sure it is the tiny one, the size of a deck of cards

    *Small address book.
OK, same rule as the Bible

    *Hairbrush and comb.
    Will probably be sent back

    *Pre-paid phone cards.
YES! And make sure you activate it and your recruit knows how to use it first!

*One pair of prescription glasses, reading glasses or contacts (with one week of cleaning solution).
Forget the contacts, just send glasses.

*A small amount of cash (i.e. less than $10).
They currently allow up to $25 in cash.

    *Feminine sanitary items.
Will probably be sent back, for the first few weeks most RDCs require recruits to use whatever mattress pads are available at the recruit NEX

*Conservative cosmetics. Female/one of each: face powder, blush, lipstick, eye shadow and mascara (non-aerosol or glass). Make-up will be authorized for division photos and graduation weekend only.
It WILL be sent back, but recruits will be allowed to have makeup for pictures, so be prepared to mail your girls' makeup a week before pictures are scheduled.

    *Barrettes (Female/must match hair color).
It WILL be sent back. Recruits will be allowed to purchase some at the recruit NEX at some point, but they have to earn them.

    *Birth control medications.
One month supply only. As soon as they have a medical appointment, recruits will get a new prescription from the Navy.
  • Craig

Buy an AT&T prepaid phone card.  The prepaid "cell phone" cards are only for cell phones which they can't have in boot camp.

They cell the AT&T phone cards at SAMS club or here:

Tomorrow is the day!!!  My son has to stay at a hotel tonight and then we will join him there tomorrow morning for his swearing in, then wait to find out what time he flies out to Great Lakes.  I'm a "hot mess".  He said to me last night "why are you crying, I'm doing the hard part"  LOL

  • Dustin's Mom

kimmic1989 - You are in for a rough couple of days but you will survive it and he will, too!  Please friend me if you need to privately vent, talk, compare notes, etc.  My son left December 12 and you will not believe the range of emotions you are in store for in the next few weeks!  Good luck - prayers coming your way!

    All,

Soooo many recruits on my website have problems remembering their 11 General Orders.  To solve this, I made this "cheat sheet" to make it easy for them.  Maybe it will help your's:

Hey Craig, I have tried a few times to register on the navydep.com website, it keeps saying I'm spam.  I sent a message to the admins and never heard back.  I thought that family could get on there and my husband is DEP 4/16.  Any suggestions?
