Dil feels he is saying Daisy. Figures - the dog.  Also, this morning my son fed his son bacon for the first time. Riker immediately signed - more.

  • Anti M

Sounds like the new year is going well!  I am okay, I have resources.  Still cranky though, and learning new skills.  This is not the most pleasant thing to endure, but there are worse things in life.

  • T-Lynn

    HI

Glad to see post. And that spirits are brighter. Now if we can get the sun to agree around here.

My cold is now in my eyes too. So I am getting off . I had to finish the club minutes adn my eyes are about to pop out. But my curiousity just had to get on here.

    hugs all

  • Mississippi Mom

Happy Late New Year to all of you!

T-Lynn, sorry that I have not checked in.  We are all fine, the tornadoes were about 60 miles West of us.   The loss though is just heartbreaking.  I shared with my family that we have so much to be thankful for and that we should not take one thing for granted.   Those folks woke up Christmas Eve morning to lives that will forever be changed.   My heart is still breaking for them.   My hubby and I were going to run to Lowe's to pick up some stuff that night, but when we saw the track of the storms he decided that we should not go.  I was glad that we didn't go, no tornadoes touched down at Lowe's but it wasn't too far from where they did.  I did go outside on the porch and watched the lightening.  My son was at house watching it, too.  He got a really cool shot of it with his phone.

We are still working on the kitchen, we are now doing what I call the "nitty gritty" stuff.  I think I have painted enough trim to fill the White House! LOL!   Oh and I hate painting trim!   Hubby said last night that we are slowly but surely chipping away at this.  I told him if could just stay with it we could get it done.  I lost a couple of days with my niece and sister coming to visit, and then I took my Mom shopping.  Hubby has helped our son put down new floors in his house a couple of days.  Hubby tells me we are not on a time frame and that it is okay, but I am ready to wrap this up.  I also took Sat. and got all my Christmas taken down and put away.  Hubby decided he would help and got all of the yard decorations put back in the basement.  He doesn't do the extension cords or spot lights so my yard is still full of them, but I told him I would get all of that put away before we have mow! LOL!   I think we were both ready for today to go back to work.  We have both been off since Christmas (he was actually off the week of Christmas) and my last day was Wed. before Christmas.  I told him last night I was ready to come back to work to get some rest.  He has a very long day today, he said he won't be home till probably around 8:00 tonight and his day started at 5:00 this morning, so I am sure he won't feel like doing anything tonight.   I am going to go by my sisters'  and see if I can help her.  She has something going with a knee and can't put any weight on it.  The Dr. put a shot in it today and gave her super strong antibiotics and told her to stay off of it for 48 hours and he would see her then and go from there.   She has been down since last Wed.  I have them a pot of soup cooking and will try to help her as much as she will let me.

AnitM - so glad you are doing as well as you are....Cranky is good!   Take advantage of getting to be cranky!   Sending prayers your way.

Blondie. T-Lynn, and Drew...sorry that you all have not been feeling well, hope you all feel much better soon!   Not fun being sick, but sure not fun being sick during the holidays.

Well, gotta run, as much as I was looking forward to work I am now looking forward to quitting time!

Oh, we had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year!  Just so very thankful for all of God's Blessing on me and my family.

Hope all of you are having a great Monday!

  • T-Lynn

    HI

finally Miss!!!! Love you had family all there for Christmas and that the painting of the trim is done.  Yes, I was worried.  Some how I felt those tornadoes were close to you. I know you said 60 miles - but that is a hop, skip and jump for those strong tornadoes.  By they way - our family will go out on the deck to watch thunder - lightning storms.   when you can share pics of the new kitchen.

Blondie - you and I have the same weather. I think that is why we are sick here.

Around here, my kids are getting ready for Riker's first birthday. The theme - Mickey Mouse club House. I knew it would be Disney. AS for me - I am still nagging for them to go through all his toys that he has. He just does not play with all of them anymore. And with the new ones - the corner in the living room is now expanding the entire wall.

Wish I had some good gossip, but honest I have none. Hope all are safe and well. hugs

  • Kim

Very sad night for my sailor.  They are putting their cat down.  She is only 5 but it is Lymphoma cancer.  They adopted her 3 years ago.  They took her to vet on Wednesday with breathing problems, fluid surrounding lungs and heart.  They phoned them Friday (test results) and sent them to hospital.  They kept her, ran more tests and phoned with results.  They tried to bring her home but 10 minutes in the car she was suffering.  I came this weekend to babysit tonight while they had a date.  I am babysitting for another reason now.  The bill is $5000.00 so far, I don't know what tonight will be.  They were not prepared for this.

  • tnmom50

my son will be coming there some time soon but I like to know how some the people whom have sailors over there like it

  • Jesusintheboat

Oh my heart breaks for them I understand as I had to put 2 dogs down- it is so hard.      :(

  • Jesusintheboat

hi tnmom50   my son is at Iwakuni base and he likes it -- he is always out about on weekends exploring the mountains etc-says there is lot to do there and I have heard the same from others as well..

  • T-Lynn

    HI

Blondie - hope the dentist visit went well. Weather here - freezing rain and snow. Temps dropping. Winter came back. Hope you are doing ok.

Kim - Oh I am so sorry about their lose. But really 5000.oo for a cat?  Gee- that sounded wrong. Not that the cat is not deserving, I just thought the cost was different.  Hope all works out. very nice of you to come babysit.

HI tnmom50 - when my sailor was in Japan - after getting into the routine - LOVED IT.

Only thing around here - taking down decorations and cleaning. Visiting with the laundry fairy adn starting the crafts/ menu/etc for teh Riker's first birthday. He was born on the January 27th but party is on February the 6th.

Have a good weekend all hugs

  • tnmom50

  • Anti M

    Pronounced Yo-ko-s'ka, if you're curious.

  • kjsdaughter

B'smom213 my daughter has been there since November she has gotten adjusted and she loves it.
  • Anti M

You can ship anything the post office allows.  No alcohol means no cologne, and no aerosol sprays like body spray or spray deodorant.   Japan doesn't allow homemade beef jerky, but I haven't heard of it not getting through (may be old info???)

If you have the FPO zip, you can look at the restrictions.  It is pretty annoying to wade through.

  • 2tymeNavyMom

My son is in Yokosuka as well at the Navy Hospital.  Loves it.  Talked with him yesterday, he called to ask me to buy him Power Ball tickets.  He's a knuckle head but I will do it.  He and his fellow sailors were sharing a brisket and giving each other a hard time.  It was good to hear them all laughing.

    Take care everyone,

  • T-Lynn

    HI

Yes, Winter weather is here too. Getting cold tonight and snowing.

We had a scare on Sunday morning. Our furnace was not putting out heat. And it was 7 degrees outside.   Son called the heating company and the guy on called asked if anyone living at our home had mechanical knowledge. Yep - my hubby. So the repair guy walked hubby through some possible ideas of what could be wrong and luckily it was the easy to fix. All that was needed was some carbon scratched off the ignition. we had heat back on in moments. :)

Your  sailor will do ok in Japan.  Just give him time to adjust and glad you found other moms with sailors in same base  :).

Oh , forgot to share. Dil and I had to go to walk in on Sunday. WE both have sinus infections. So today my hubby adn son took the day to watch the baby and i rested. Dil worked at home on the computer but she got to rest too.

    Have a great week. hugs

  • T-Lynn

    Hi

Blondie sounds like a plan. Get Angel to salt = her son coming to shovel. Sleep late and gas station plows parking lot. And yes, that was suggested by the repairman to my hubby.

And right with you in the cold. today - even with the sun shining - it was cold out. Shivering - frozen nose cold.  And for the first time this winter, I am not comfortable in our basement living area. The cold is creeping in from the walls.

I have to keep a close eye on Shark. she wants to roam around. Not good - she needs to stay close to her heat rocks. But telling her that. Now talk about falling on deaf ears.

Well I wish all sweet dreams  hugs

  • T-Lynn

Positive thoughts for our 10 sailors held by Iran.

And gentle hugs to their families.

  • angeldi999

My son is on his second tour and he chose Japan again.  Though he is assigned to the Reagan (previously George Washington) he has a home on land when the ship isn't out.  He LOVES Japan.  He was ticked off when he first found out he was going there, but he was told by an officer that it is a much loved assignment.  The Japanese are such gentle people, he will likely treasure his time there.

  • Anti M

I did two tours in Yokosuka, and my husband did three (Sasebo, Totsuka, and Yokosuka).  For those who love Japan, it gets into our hearts.  I miss it a lot, the culture, food, and people.  My Japanese friends still teach Aikido on base, I'd love to go visit them again.

LOL, my husband thinks if he were single when he went there, he'd have a Japanese wife and family now.

  • ManCubMama

I have a son that is in Yokouska and he seems to really like it! He loves Japan! We are excited to be traveling there in April!

  • Anti M

April is such a lovely time there!  Might be rainy, take a light raincoat or windbreaker, and a folding umbrella.

  • Kim

That sucks Maggs, We are always here for you.  Keep us posted.

TLynn, have you looked at a space heater?

Welcome new moms.  Everyone's sailor seems to fall in love with Japan.  My sailor married a Japanese girl.  He is nearby right now on shore duty, but he will need new orders to return to the fleet this year.  I wish they would stay close with my only grandson.  He just turned 1, but he has a large family in Sasebo to meet.  I know they are looking.

Update on bill.  The hospital ended up giving him a refund because he was active duty. (I was there and pushed it)  They gave him 50% off their bill of $3000.00 and didn't charge for some things.  That was really nice of them.  However, the vet should have sent them to hospital right away and not charged $1500.

  • DREW7062

Hi my son been in Japan for 5 months he says he loves it there. He misses home thigh. lol but he enjoys it he's in Yokosuka
  • MAMA_C

Just a little note to pass on.  My son will be on his 2nd tour this year.  He ask me make him a light blanket because it is chilly on the ship. Yes the sailors can purchase a blanket that very warm but for him he need another one.  Also El Nino is effecting the weather there now.

  • Kim

Blondie, the real congrats goes to the people at that vet hospital.  I do not believe they give a 50% discount.  They were all very sincere and kind.  Everyone was in tears.

I recall my son telling me that it is cold were they sleep, even when they are in the tropics.  They are a ways under the surface.  I think they can make their bed (whatever it is called) with extra blankets.  Anti M can tell answer that.

  • Anti M

The extra blankets will depend on the ship.  Using a blanket is not the problem, what to do with it when not in use is.  Some ships allow them to make their beds with any bedding, while others insist on Navy issue.  So you must ask your sailor.  A blanket is just fine, but no electric blankets, and nothing foofy like a duvet.  Keep it simple and plain.  Issue blankets tend to be colors like grey, Army green, or blue. They will have no way to launder them in many cases, as personal bedding is not allowed in the general laundry; no individual machines, it all goes into one big bleached batch.

Blunt talk:  While some ships will allow colorful bedding and personalized quilts, or photo blankets, don't count on it.  Also, this draws attention to their rack, which is something no one wants.  They could get extra scrutiny during inspections.  Don't do that to your sailor, they won't want to hurt your feelings by telling your your thoughtful gift is a pain in the butt.  Choose simple and warm, and something which can go in a locker or under their issue blanket.

Ask your sailor what works best in their situation.  I know for some, I am dead wrong, but for others, I am exactly correct!

  • T-Lynn

    HI

Thanks Kim. Son has the space heater at the radio station. Then son took a look at the April Air unit. It was not set for Winter. Now it is, so humidity level is just right. Now very comfortable.

Anti M - oh the blanket stories. When my sailor was on his ship, the crew loved to visit Korea. there they would purchase what were called Mink Blankets. Not real mink, but that wonderful soft feeling adn oh so warm. Every sailor had one or two. And that really helped them keep warm. Now at that time, my son's captain was not hard nosed about the bedding. That captain wanted his crew warm .. not sick. So the second trip to Korea, one of my sailor's mates had duty and could not get one of those blankets. He asked my son to get him one - gave him the money. So off my son went. Well, my son purchased him a Hello Kitty  - in bright pink. That mate of his was so sleepy when my son got back that he  reach out and wrap up in that blanket. Next morning the entire ship heard " Hello Kitty?" My son told his mate - well - you will know your blanket form the rest. Teh mate was not mad. Everyone laughed.

Kim - so very nice that bill was lowered. But I agree - why didn't that vet send them along?

Maggs- I was hoping things would be better. still sending Reiki for both of you. Remember - please - to treat yourself special. It is ok to do this. You are giving all you can and you count too.

Blondie love the picture. Which one is you? Has to be the sexy one  in the middle - right?

Right now I am first birthday party mode. The party will be on February 6th - even though he turns 1 on the 27th of January. Only day for out laws could come. so now making some decorations, will be cooking some. Dil has not finished teh menu yet. But it is comign along. And I am hoping he gets clothes - NO TOYS. He has enough he doesn't play with!

Did find some cherries for Shark. Oh is she happy. Have to give her bath soon - she pigged out.

Sweet dreams all and stay warm!   hugs

  • Anti M

Oh, the Mink blankets are great!  Ours are still in use, a plain black one and a fancy deep blue one.  We have a leopard one we found in a bag in the middle of the freeway north of Vegas.  Larry stopped to grab the bag so it would not cause a wreck, and it had this beautiful brand new blanket in it.  I think we have a brown floral one we've never used packed away.  I love our minks.  If your sailors go to Korea, tell them that is what you want!!!!

  • MAMA_C

Yes he told me about those Mink blankets they are good! Now he wants an in between blanket and requested it  to be specific colors too!

Okay now I'll change the subject.  My son on USS Blue Ridge, and he mentioned last year on aweigh they went Australia as well as Korea where they had a chance to gamble.  I'm not gambling person.  So these were his first experiences.  He told me he won lots of money in Australia and then loss lots in Korea.  So warn your sailors to be careful.

  • momplus2

I second the idea of a Mink. My son bought me a Mink Robe for Xmas. It is the warmest robe/blanket I have ever had! I feel so luxurious in it. I could walk the red carpet in it! My son leaves for Guam on Thursday. Please send strength for me. My only saving grace, is that my daughter got engaged over the New Year Holiday. He will need to come back to walk her down the isle. That will be in one year. Hugs to ALL!

  • MAMA_C

Momplus2..I haven't been to Guam but my son did call me from Guam while he was on the beach soaking up sun.  Last year when he was aweigh.  It was the most funniest call I had from him because he really didn't want to talk he just wanted to have fun.  He and his liberty buddies had a rented a type of boat and I was taking up his time.  Well, it's American territory and and apparently there is a lot to do during their liberty time.

  • T-Lynn

    HI

Joshmom - how exciting ! Ok where are the pics?

Hey we hit the mid 20's. Heat wave coming Blondie.

My sailor too sent back those blankets for his Grandma's.  He did not get me one, instead I received a silk Japanese purse. But I agree those blankets are great.

    hugs all

  • momplus2

Thank you MAM_C I will take all the support I can get.  Here's another one I need support with. I am working with Verizon right now. They are not allowing me to place a military hold without the social security number of my son or copy of his orders. I am not sure how you guys feel....about this new policy...but I am fuming!!!! I don't feel comfortable giving out the social security number. My son is not the primary account holder. Does someone have any suggestions? Help...Now I am paying for a phone that is not in use!! thanks in advance for listening to me

  • Selly

Hello everyone! I'm new to this group. My daughter recently got her orders. She is going to Yokosuka. I'm trying to do my research to prepare and help her prepare. Anyone have any info, tips? I'm mainly concerned with how I will communicate with her. She has a laptop so I know we will be able to Skype, email and use FB.

  • kjsdaughter

Hi Selly. My daughter actually just added international calling to her phone plan which cost her $5.00 more a month and we also downloaded the whatsapp to text and wifi call. I talk to her and FaceTime daily as long as she is on base. We are going to suspend her service when she leaves for deployment.
  • Selly

Thank you for the info kjsdaughter. Yes, I am suspending her cell service here. I'm so nervous for her, but I know she'll do great.

  • AUnavymom

Hi everyone! I am new to this site. I am looking for any information, tips, suggestions any of you might have that I can pass on to my son. He just recently commissioned and will be leaving for Sasebo, Japan in late February. He is currently checking into phone service, living, ect. Thanks for any help I can pass on to him to make this transition smooth.

  • Anti M

My thoughts are with you both, Maggs.  Much love and healing energy.

  • Anti M

I am sure our sailors are safe, but wow, I have rarely heard of so much snow in the southern parts of Japan.  Nothing like some parts of the US gets, but still scary because they are not prepared for it.
