I had a sailor in Atsugi, and I spent a few weeks there myself. My stay was so long ago that my first hand details are way outdated. It is an airbase, so inland, not on the water. Plenty to do, and like the other bases, a short hop on the train to Yokohama and Tokyo. Single sailors live in the barracks.
Summer is festival season, this one is from Atsugi. Every base has them, and Friendship Days, etc. This video is longer, so you might want to skip forward to see the dancing.
My sailor is in Yokosuka. He's on the Chancellorsville when not on base. He's in IT. They spent first 90 days on board even when not under sail. We use whatsapp to call - good reception.
Anti M, The Sailors in Sasebo were on essential personnel, and most of the base was closed for a day, except for the galley. and underways delayed (public knowledge). My son (we are from a snowy state) said it was just a dusting of snow about four inches, but they are not used to it there.
Oh yeah, I've been "essential personnel", but it was usually during typhoons. I slept on the floor behind the warm equipment racks because we were a commsta and had only one bunk.
Hello everyone! I am new to this group. My son is on a ship heading to Japan. I believe they are stopping off at different places before they finally get there. His ship is swapping with another ship. He will be stationed out of Yokosuka. I have been trying to see what most people are using for phone service. We put the WhatsApp on our phones before he left. I have seen where people have good luck with that. I really hate to do the international plan with AT & T if we don't have to.
Well someone had to be on duty during teh snow. I think the Snow Sailor did a great job.Isn't it fun to sour sailors still finding a way to fun?
Welcome aboard New Moms!! My sailor was there in Sasebo for 3 years and loved it. When there he purchased phone in Japan and service too. Because our phones don't work there. It was also asked what they might need - LONG JOHNS !!! Pack them - several pairs. It really helps. The nice silk ones fit nicely under teh uniforms too. And one more thing - I hope they have a civilian passports. YES they will need them. Military ones cannot be used all the time. If they don't have one - help them get it. And please "jump in the water" more. That means share more about yourselves and sailors.
Hey - josh mom - need pics of you meeting the ship!
Maggs- 34 inches !!! Wow. My girlfriend in MD I think she had 20 inches. took two days to dig out the cars. Love the picture. Naturally he won't leave - you have great room service or should I say Feed Service. Fingers crossed for all good news Maggs. Glad your sailor was there to help out. Keep us posted please.
blondie - what is new?
Kim - need to hear a chirp please.
Drama - ok?
Miss - check in
Me - doing ok. Riker turned 1 on the 27th of January. And he had to go to the doctor that morning - Pink Eye. He doing better and now has a cold. Plus cutting morals. Oh is he happy - not! but he still had a good smile when he got cake .
We use Facebook Messenger to communicate with our son. This allows us to either send messages (text) or see him face to face (like skype). Its pretty cool!!!
Hi All! LOVE all of the pics! Baby pics and those amazing bird pics, Maggs.
It's been almost a year since I started on the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) and I am feeling better with more energy but I get knocked on my butt if I accidentally consume something I should not. I try very hard to read labels and I really can only eat what I prepare. When I go out, I have to be very specific about what's in everything. My son said I have become "Portlandia". We went out and I quizzed the waiter on where specifically the bison came from and whether or not it was 100% grass-fed or if it was grain-finished. My son said he expected me to ask what the name of the bison was and did it have a stable and comfortable home! All I can do is try to find the humor in it. I have dropped 21 lbs which is a little more than I had intended so the 35 year-old jeans in my closet fit me now! I did get rid of the neon purple polyester jumpsuit with shoulder pads out to here! Hmmm...probably need to clean more stuff out of my closet! We did find out that chicken eggs cause asthma for me but I can eat duck eggs. Finding them is a challenge and I am pretty sure Tupac (who looks like Angel) and Shelby would not like it if I got a duck.
T-Lynn...still haven't auditioned for anything because I am not 100%. There was one production in which I was interested but I will be visiting my Corpsman in DC when it's "on the boards".
Still working and both offices are now switching to 100% electronic charting. The good news...they are using the same system! Yay! I only have to learn Dentrix!! Anybody work in the dental field who's used Dentrix?
Corpsman said he's going to re-up...he wants to be an IDC. He seems to be doing well.
Blondie....so sorry about your fibro flare. Autoimmune flares SUCK!
We have had more rain so far than last year which is a good thing. We had a little surprise ice and snow storm the first weekend in January. People here FREAK OUT if there is half an inch of snow!
My Corpsman said he had lots of fun digging out of the snow when that storm hit the East. He said he bought a snow shovel a couple of weeks before it hit and was one of the few in his barracks who could help dig out cars. He said it was a good workout!
May all in need of healing make a complete healing of body, heart, mind and spirit.
Hi DramaSoul, I caught your feed and noticed the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP). I just looked up on google. I am curious about this diet because I have an Autoimmune disease too. Is it expensive to live on this diet? How did you start it?
Good to hear from you Drama :). Keep us updated on you and how re-up goes for your sailor.
My sailor called to share he had taken the test for rank of Chief. But he has to wait a couple of months before he knows.
Here everyone is sick - except the Riker! His mom now has Pink eye and a severe laryngitis. His Grandpa has a bad ear infection and me - that sinus came back with a roar. Now son gets a check up tomorrow - so waiting to hear what he has. Us adults want to hybernate and Riker is running circles around us all.
Oh - have to share a funny. DIL had taken Riker in for diaper change - put him down - BUT did not pay attention that he was following her back to teh bathroom - where son was taking morning shower. She walks back to Riker's room, BUT Riker takes a detour into the shower with daddy and still in his pjs. All I heard was calling for help with some bad words and DIL laughing and coughing. Sorry No pictures.
Well something fun to start off the day.
Hey - our ground hog did not see his shadow - so early Spring. How about everyone else?
Thought I'd say hi... still not right after the surgery, and I can't recall what I have and have not shared. It is a lot of TMI, but the end result is a temp colostomy bag for six months, then more surgery to reattach everything. I am miserable, so I am not posting much.
I avoid certain foods for my arthritis, mostly nightshades, which is tomatoes, white potatoes, eggplant and some sweet peppers. Really helps me a great deal. Right now, with this stupid surgery, I am on a bland low fiber diet. Th slightest thing can upset my gut, and that is unpleasant in so many ways, even painful.
I do enjoy using oils, I buy mine from a family business in Idaho called Plant Therapy. Very good, and not overly expensive. A lot of my friends and neighbors are into DoTerra, but those are expensive, and I do not like the way the company lures housewives into their marketing schemes. I like the small business model much better.
Anit M....I am so sorry you have to go through this. My uncle had a similar thing where he had the colostomy bag for about 6 months before he could get rid of it with another surgery. He did recover! Sending lots of healing energy your way and surrounding you in healing light. Good information on the oils. I have avoided DoTerra for the same reason. Yeah...those nightshades are not good!!! Miss my tomatoes and peppers. Never was one for eggplant so I don't miss it!
MAMA_C...I am working with my physician (who is a functional medicine practioner as well as an MD) and the nutritional therapist with whom she works. Since it is important to avoid preservatives, artificial flavors, sweeteners and additives, I eat organic veggies and fruits (especially the dirty dozen) as well as animal proteins that are grass-fed, wild caught or free range. It can be a bit more costly but I am just feeding me. There are some GREAT blogs and recipe books. There is even one on how to keep your food bill down and eat only real food. I can only do full fat coconut mild and there is only one brand that does not have preservatives or emulsifiers and stabilizers in it (Natural Value and I do not do the organic one....coconuts are not part of the dirty dozen!) There is a book by Mickey Trescott...GREAT COOKBOOK! Also, Eileen Laird has a slim little guide to AIP. I do have Dr. Sarah Ballantyne's book but it is not an easy read. Lots of great science and something you read a little of and then put down for awhile. There is another one by Dr. Isabella Wentz which is about the root cause of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. The nutritional therapist has helped a lot and I am really fortunate that the one with whom I work is part of my MD's staff. The hardest part is making sure you have no processed foods and no sugars with the exception of the occasional local organic honey. I was hankering for a chip of some kind and I found some sweet potato chips which are allowed EXCEPT the oils that were used were on the no-no list (canola, safflower, sunflower)...so no chips for me. The fact that I feel so much better is why I stick with it! This is a lifestyle for me now. I will start challenging some foods in another couple of months.
Side note...my Corpsman does CrossFit and they eat a Paleo/Ancestral type of diet. He admits he will never be 100% at it because he won't give up beer! Bread isn't as much of challenge for him...he loves him some good beer. Last year a friend of ours in Ohio introduced him to Yuengling on tap and in bottles. He even went to the brewery in Pennsylvania!
Blondie...after the Winter in the midwest and the east...I think I will stick with the NW! Thanks for the offer! My grandparents had a chicken farm so I spent my summers getting up before dawn to feed the chickens and then go out and collect eggs to grade, candle and pack up for the local markets. LOVED the baby chicks. Would've loved to have ducklings!
Hope everyone stays healthy and safe with the weekend coming.
Welcome LisaG. You asked a question that most of our sailors did not know that they could do when they went there. Hopefully, AntM sees this soon. He is allowed to ship ahead but she will have the best person to give the details. It was important that you gave his rank. Will he be on a ship?
I suggest that he travel with his uniforms as carry on. Show his orders at the airport. They will allow it. You will get to go past security with him to help carry.
My son was stationed there 2008-11 and married a girl from Sasebo. She has 100+ relatives there. They had a baby here 12/31/2014. He is due to go back to the fleet this fall and he is hoping for 2yr orders for Sasebo. This grandma is sad.
Hi other moms. I have been lurking. Love the pictures T. Saying a prayer for all that need it. I have been working every day/night for last 2 weeks and now I am sick. Tis the season.
When my son shipped to Japan he took 6 bags with him on the airplane including personal dive gear. The airline makes an exception because they are moving to Japan. I believe the Navy gives them paperwork that states that. He bought a bike before he left which I shipped to him after he arrived.
hi everyone. I've been lurking, but also just not home enough to post - our first weekend to be home is V-day!
Just talked to my sailor (Yokusuka/Chancellorsville) - they get underway again shortly for a short time. the one time i'll drop anything is when the phone rings just so I can hear from him (we use WhatsApp - free and reliable).
I'm loving the pics that have been posted - what cutie patooties!!!
Its the frozen tundra here and I'm over it. just saying. I'm shopping for large plant pots just to start moving out of winter - at least mentally.
One thing with taking bags on the plane, yes they can with orders, BUT be very careful when putting valuables in them such as game systems. Locking the bags only does so much, and they have to be unlocked when they go through the TSA scope for checked baggage. Yes, valuables HAVE been stolen from sailors bags during the trip. Probably on the US end, Japanese tend not to steal.
Consider mailing the game station, shore duty packages usually are okay. Or if it is small enough, hand carry it. Third option is to check his orders, if he is authorized a packout from the barracks, let Personal Property ship it, safest way. Most single sailors do not realize they have that option in some cases.
Welcome aboard LisaG :). Your sailor wll enjoy Sasebo. My sailor did. So much to do too. So glad AntiM and Kim were on to share information with you. And yes, please take you ID along to teh airport. Your sailor can ask for a pass for you so you can sit with him at eh gate. It is so nice to have that extra time. One question - does your sailor have his civilain pass port? If not - help him get one. YES, it is a good idea that he has one. It will enable him to travel in countries when on leave and to get home if there is an emergency. Keep us posted when he arrives there We all like to send positive thoughts for a safe adn fun voyage to Japan.
KIm - you over did again. Sorry you are ill. We JUST got over being contagious here. Hope you can take it easy and heal quickly. would love to see some pic of you sweet grandson. He must be growing.
It is snowing today, but by Friday it will be 54. I believe we are starting that roller coaster ride of "Spring is Coming" to back to Winter saying " No Way! ".
Need to get along. I have to write a small critic of a scouting event I was at on Saturday. Wish all sweet dreams hugs
We are having a strange up and down weather pattern, from cold enough for snow to near 60! High winds right now, kept me awake all night, the big trees across the street "talk" in the wind.
Blondie, glad your arm is improving. Do you like ginger tea? It really helps my joints.
I think I am healing, but I am annoyed I can only shower now and then, because if my appliance gets wet, it falls off, can't have that. I have long hair and it only gets washed every four days. The beauty school I went to closed, so I have to find a new place to get it trimmed and washed. Bah.
Welcome tnmom50. Hope you find a another mom with sailor at that base soon. If you have any questions - ask. Usually one of us have an answer. All our sailors go through many of the same situations.
blondie, i remember my mom telling stories of sisters helping each other with hair washing and using home made soap too. Yup - daughter like mom. How wonderful. Sending positive thoughts their way for all to work out well and safe.
Weather - 50 today !!!! Wow - BUT what wind! 50 mph winds and on the news was many videos of overturned semis. I don't think anyone was hurt - just frustrated they turned over on their sides.
Other than that my Grandson is running circles around me. He has just learned to open teh backdoor! AND the lilttle chair he liked to sit in - well, he learned it is a great way to climb up onto the TV table and touch the TV screen. I am no longer going gray- I am going shocking white!
my son will arrive in atsugi tonight some time I hope I will be able to figure this time change out .I be glad to get his call I made it mom.then the biggest call is next time he calls I love it mom
ok, let me try this again - seattle to japan is an 11 hr time diff, they are ahead. from here its 14 hours so I generally get calls at 5:50a (its 7:50p there) or 3:30p & its 5:30a there. upside down but just opposite enough to work. :)
we use whatsapp on our phones. its free calls & texts.
sailor is based in Yokosuka and our marine is in Okinawa - we use whatsapp with both of them. and of course you can use face time and Skype. email only when the sailor is underway (he's assigned to the Chancellorsville). and he found that gmail doesn't work very well.
Thanks scully - your time description is much better than mine! My sailor and I have this game where he'll message me when it's midnight over there on holidays and birthdays - the goofy, little things are always the big things when they are so far away!
Flights to Japan take ten hours one direction, and closer to 12 the other. Something about the jet stream. But most of the time they are so beat when they hit the ground, and they don't have the right phone coverage, that they don't call home for a day or two or three.
I have their weather on my bookmarks, it shows 14 hrs ahead, and google confirms it so it must be true! hahaha I'm in Ft. Lauderdale (the area of the country that doesn't experience winter).
New moms - believe this or not - but honest this is true. After a month - you will KNOW its our sailor calling by the sound of the ring. For real! You can ask the other moms here - you will know. And when my sailor was there - he would just call . He would be so excited about something he would forget - we all would be asleep. WE just got up - put on a pot of coffee and talked.
I turned 61 on last Tuesday. And my aunt Alice told me a long time ago to - a birthday is celebrated for 7 days! Well, I am still celebrating and a special present will be walking in the door in about an hour. You all guessed it - My sailor!!!!
He was sent to Indiana for some classes and he is close enough to run away from teh weekend. Turns out there are three other sailors in the class and all have family near by. So all of them are running away this weekend. Note - they all have the weekends off.
I will try and get a pic of my sailor while he is here.
Other than that - Riker did make my hair go shocking white today. he fell face first - luckily on the rug and not the hard floor. Well he got his first bloody lip. I cried more than he did.And now you never know he hit the floor. guess that is why boys are nicked named "bouncing"
Well, I need to get along, Got to get my arms ready for that FIRST HUG! hugs to all here too

I'm shopping for large plant pots just to start moving out of winter - at least mentally.
hope everyone is staying warm.

HI
Happy Heart Day all
Welcome aboard LisaG :).

Hi just checking. I have seen no chatter. So I was wondering if anyone was talking or if again - I am not receiving messages.

Bah.

HI
Wish all a fun - happy - weekend hugs

ok, let me try this again - seattle to japan is an 11 hr time diff, they are ahead. from here its 14 hours so I generally get calls at 5:50a (its 7:50p there) or 3:30p & its 5:30a there. upside down but just opposite enough to work. :)
we use whatsapp on our phones. its free calls & texts.
sailor is based in Yokosuka and our marine is in Okinawa - we use whatsapp with both of them. and of course you can use face time and Skype. email only when the sailor is underway (he's assigned to the Chancellorsville). and he found that gmail doesn't work very well.
sailor is loving it over there.

Hi
