We also just got back from GL for PIR weekend  My son arrived in Corry Station yesterday and was able to call us 3 times!  so great to have communication back with him  He was getting settled in and trying to adjust to the weather, a bit different from GL.  Looking forward to this next stage and to a visit there in the future
  • idahojeep

Congrats on your new Sailor Angie!
  • Craig

Jim C. - How's your daughter doing?  Any update?

    Prayers going out to her...

  • Craig

I was going to write that too, but spaced it out... So, Congrats Angie....
  • Jim C

thanks all for the prayers and well wishes. She says the pain is managable and regardless she's not going back to the ER just to be doped again. She has an appointment with the specialest Monday.

Craig, thanks for giving me the link to the medical regs. I wasn't clear on a couple of things (still not very good at reading navy) maybe you can answer a question for me. Would a gall bladder removal be cause for a medical seperation? I'm just trying to prepare myself if I get that call. She would be truely devasted if that was the case.

Hi Guys, My son called me from NAS and heard that someone has been waiting to school up for CTT since August.  Really can it take that long?
  • himmiemom

Congrats Angie on your new sailor!!!!!
  • mumziepooh

Hey guys - thinking about getting my son a watch for PIR (yes, Craig, I also got him a coin and a card reader ;D ) what sort of watch would be useful for a CTR?  Color?
  • Craig

mumzie - I think watches are a personal thing and it should be left to the person that is going to wear it to decide if it is "their style".  It took me forever to tell my family not to buy me a wallet each christmas.  There is only one wallet type I like, I hate all the others.  So if I have to use it each day, then let me make it something I like.  The Gurnee mall has a Fossil store there and a Movado store.  Bring him there and let him decide.

Secondly, there is no rule on what color a watch can be.  It just can't be faddish (ie you can have a pink polkadot).  But one thing for sure you can't go wrong with a black one.  I had silver almost my whole career until the Ironman watches came out.

Here is the offical rules on watches.  Read para 6e.  http://www.npc.navy.mil/NR/rdonlyres/4934C9FA-A5A7-47F4-9C0B-D8DB20...

One thing you might want to tell your sailor is to NEVER wear his watch at a personnel inspection.  If you wear a watch, then it becomes part of your uniform.  Thus, it becomes an item that the personnel inspecter can look at and can "gig" you if watch band is dirty.  Who doesn't have a little dirt under the pins, or between the links?  It's not worth having to stand a reinspection for.

  • idahojeep

We bought our sons watches for HS graduation knowing they were going in the Navy.  They are stainles steel Wenger swiss army watches with a black face.  Wenger and Victorinox are very good sturdy brands and can be found on sale at Sierra Trading Post or Overstock.  Ours sons' have date and 24hr markers but are plain looking.  They love them.  FWIW.
  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

Thanks for the congrats!   It is nice to talk with him frequently   He actually called me 3 times yesterday   He keeps asking for stuff for me to send to him :)   but he doesnt have a address yet  How long til he gets that?  He's jonesing for his notebook

@Cinder - Dan told me that the Sailor who gave him his tour when he first arrived has been there for a year!    I told him that I really didnt think that was possible   He was a CTR

  • sunshine73

my son told me that a bunch of CTRs who had been there a while just classed up last week. Hopefully when this weeks PIR group gets to Corry there will be enough to class up. He heard that the numbers are getting close.
  • cinder

Hi Craig, I know you talked about this awhile back and I looked but didn't find it.  How does my son change from Ca. to Florida resident?  I know you said something about a will but can't remeber the rest. Thanks
  • Craig

cinder, per the state income tax.  Each state has different rules concerning how military pay is taxed.  Example, I'm from Colorado, our state requires all of it citizens to pay state income tax.  It doesn't matter if you're in the miltiary, or, you haven't lived in the state for 20 years, if it's your state of residence you must pay.

To make sure you get the up-to-date info, go to the state links posted in the below links to find what your state income tax rules are.

    http://www.military.com/Finance/content/0,15356,85350,00.html

    http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinfo/tax2000/blstatetax-1.htm

Here is what I wrote on my website a couple years ago...What alot of sailors did, including me, is change their state of residence.  It take like 5 minutes and will save you a thousands of $$$ over the years.

    ------------------------------------------

    Hey all,
Most Sailors don't know this, so here is an item that will save them $1000's.

Nothing ticks me off more than a state that collect taxes on Sailors that aren't stationed there, and will never reap the benefits from that state when they are gone during their enlistment period (ie 4 to 6 years).

Yes, some states have rules that say if a military member is stationed in another state, that they are exempt from paying taxes. But these states are few and far between. (I beleive they are New Jersey, New York, and Oregon). To get out of pay taxes in these states use DD-2058-1. Which can be downloaded here ---> http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/i...s/dd2058-1.pdf

So what does the Sailors do from states (ie like Colorado) that make Sailor pay taxes, even though they have nothing there? Well, years ago, when I was fresh out of bootcamp and in "A" school, EVERYONE switched their State of Residence (Understand this is totally different than "Home of Record") to a state that don't have State taxes. Since my schooling was in Florida, I had an address in Florida, I became a Florida Residence.

How do you change you residence? 1st you must have an address in that state that your mail can go to (this is only until you transfer, then you just submit a change of address form thru the postoffice, just like everyone else does at any duty station you go to). Since I live in Pensacola in the barracks, then I had the address. Secondly, there are 5 different ways to declare another State to be your residence. The easiest is making a "Last Will", however, all the rules are on the form.... To do this, all you need to do is fill out DD-2058 which can be downloaded at the same site above ---> http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/infomgt/forms/eforms/dd2058.pdf

So, if your Sailors are tired of paying state tax, then have them change their residence to a state that doesn't collect taxes.
The states that don't pay state tax are: Alaska, Florida, Neveda, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Texas, Tennessee, Washington, Wyoming.
    http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=130684,00.html

Since alot of Sailors goto "A" school in Florida, they already have the address (ie Pensacola), just have them make a "Will"...... It's that simple!!!

  • Craig

    All,

Alot of CT's are taking the SELRES early out.  This is a really sucky deal, and should only be used for those that were planning on getting out anyways.

With the economy the way it is, these sailors will be really hard up.  I personally bet is within 6 months, they will offer a cash buyout to get sailors to leave.  The reason I say this, is this was the same way they did it in the 1990's when I decided to get out....

    SELRES early out...

  • cinder

Hi Craig thanks for reposting the information I just emailed it to my son.  I thought that CT's were in demand and private pay is high?  Why would anyone get out early if they have 14 years in?
  • idahojeep

There was much discussion in bootcamp about state taxes amongst all the recruits.  J and J were glad that Idaho does not tax military members while on active duty.  It seems some states Single &1 rates were huge!
  • Craig

cinder - CT's do get paid really good money when they get out.  However, lets say a CT with 3 years in get out, they won't get paid much.  They haven't yet learned the skills needed in the CT civilian sector world.  They haven't gained the knowledge on how to do various tasks.  Secondly, most won't have their college degree yet.  Without that college degree most defense contractors don't want you.  You have not met their criteria.

Why would anyone get out at 14?  If you had 2 PFA failures I would think about it.  If you had a job lined up that paid $120K per year, I'd think about it.  If you were not accepted for Perform to Serve (PTS), then I'd think about it.  There are many reasons.

idahojeep - Exactly, it all depends on what each state does for taxes.  Colorado just totally screws the miltiary.  Thus why I changed my residence.  Everyone needs to see what their state does.

  • idahojeep

My sons could take leave but they do not want to get held back in their school.  There is a guy in their class who missed too much class while on leave and got set back.  They are waiting until A school is over to come home for 2 weeks.  They will do "recruiter duty" to gain an extra 5 days without using their leave.
  • idahojeep

My kids are mostly off on weekends unless they have watch.  They don't go anywhere though.  Phase 1 you can't leave base at all.
  • cinder

Thanks Craig always good information.  I wish they would let them have leave while they are waiting to school up.
  • camenae

That's what my husband plans on doing, idahojeep. We were talking about how a week at home right now would probably do him some good, but he said he's going to stick it out so he doesn't get set back. He doesn't want to be there any longer than he needs to be, lol.
  • Craig

Suzy - Sorry, not to get back to you sooner.  Yes, while in school the sailors can take leave for the holidays only (emergency leave you can do anytime).

If they are in holding company, and in Phase 3, then the leave is really easy to get.  You are basically useless in holding company, and if you have days on the books, then you can take the leave.  You can never go into the negative (emergency leave is totally ok to go negative), and they will approve it... Why won't they let them take leave in Phase 1 or 2? Because they want the sailors to learn the base 1st.

My nephew has been home to Colorado about 5 times since leaving bootcamp.  What he is doing is putting in an "Out-of-Area" chit to fly home on the long 3 day weekends.  This way he is not charged leave.  The flights from P-cola are about $250 rt, and he blows his money that way.

Per your nephew.  If he is considered "Staff" at Corry, which means anything except student, he has to put in a chit saying he is a family member.  It is so simple.  However, if he doesn't, then he will be charged with Fraternazation.

  • camenae

Craig, I started looking through the list of possible places my husband could be stationed. One of them is Medina. Where is that? I'm not finding it...

    Thanks!

  • Craig

camenae - Medina is in San Antonio Texas.  Since this subject has came up before, I just made a new post up in the discussion area that will help you, and others.

    http://www.navyformoms.com/group/ctratemoms/forum/topics/some-of-th...

For a great video about Medina, here it is:  (At least I like it ~ha)...

  • camenae

Thanks, Craig! You've sent me that link before. I just finished looking at those places. I plan on buying a CAC reader for my husband in a few days.
  • glassdog

Are moms and dads allowed to join Navy Families or is it just for wives and girlfriends?  Looked like some good info there.

Am going to check with my son today re the CAC and reader!

  • Craig

glassdog - Just a back ground on the NavyFamilies website.  That was started back in Oct 2005.  About 3 years before N4M's.  It use to be the happening place. However, since the Navy dumps funding into N4M, and advertises for them, that website has slowed to a trickle.  It has some awesome info, but like I said, most people like alot of talk and action, and N4M provides that.

I ended up being given that website since the mom who made it moved on, and just lost interest.  Which was great since it worked very well with my own website called NavyDEP.com.  The only reason I made NavyDEP.com was because my son was having a bunch of people call me at all hours of the day to provide answers.  I made it because by posting 1 answer on a website, not only are you answering 1, you are answering more than 100 sailors with the answer.

Kathie - Per the CAC card reader.  I actually posted that info on my NavyFamilies website.  You can buy them for $19 online at the Micro Center.  I bought one for my nephew and it works great.

    http://www.navyformoms.com/group/ctratemoms/forum/topics/some-of-th...

Everyone else - I try to never say I own two Navy forum websites myself.  I just don't think it's cool to advertise your own website on another.   You'll notice that when I answer some question I will provide links to them since I've already written about the stuff you're asking months before and know how to provide quick answers.

The only reason I came to N4M is my nephew joined and I wanted to track him PIR group 9/2/2010.  It ended up alot of people were looking for answers and I was answering them.  Since my nephew is in school to be a CTT, and since my own son is an active duty CTN, I wanted to help Susie Q with this section.  To vent myself with all this Navy crap, I actually made a group here on N4M's called "The USS Chicken Ship".  Man, that section is a laugh a day, which I need.

Here is something I wrote for my deppers just this past week.  Since I have a depper from my website going though the PIR 4/8/2011, I have been providing them answers too.   Since this is a brand new write up, I always want people to let me know if it answered their questions.  If you got time, check it out and let me know.  Sometimes I leave out stuff and need to know, because if you guys don't understand, then neither will the deppers I work with.

    That's my life story.  ~ha

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Hi everyone!  Just got back from driving my son's truck to him from So. Cal to Pensacola.  3 days to drive to Fl and then 6 nights at Navy Lodge on NAS! Great time! Was able to have the sailor with us overnight...had him to Corry at 6 am and then got him back about 1215 everyday! Couldn't have had better weather or a better time with him and other sailors! Loved seeing Corry and NAS was gorgeous! Watched the Blue Angels practice as Navy Lodge is right across the street from where they are stationed, went to Pensacola Beach, visited the Navy Museum at NAS, stumbled into a Texas Hold Em game at the CPO Club (my son couldn't even go into the club lol!). Had never been to Florida before and was just treated very wonderfully!  Hoping to go back in July! I miss the sailor already.  He begins CTT C school on April 4th.
  • idahojeep

Craig, my one son is talking about W Virginia.  In my research it seems that would be Sugar Grove because he said he couldn't tell me anything else other than WV.  Well there is a ton of info on the NIOC stations online.  Sugar Grove seems remote and nothing around close but he likes that and hates cities.

Wow rorysmom sounds like you had a great time!  I wish we could go to our sons' A school graduation.  I watched one on a youtube vid and it seems very small compared to BC.  The Blue Angels are so cool!

  • Craig

I went to a friends retirement in Sugar Grove, he was the CMC.  Man, Sugar Grove is like the movie Deliverance.  You are so much in the back woods.  The hotel room we stayed was almost seemed liked they allowed you to field strip deer in.  The hunting is excellent, however the nearest big town is like 30 miles away.

It is probably one of the remotest CT bases I've ever seen.

  • idahojeep

Some of the names of places around there are hilarious ya'll.  Both my boys love skiing so that is great.  It seems that there is much to see within a few hours drive though and none of us (except USMC hubby) have been back east.  Sounds like I would definitely visit if that is where he chooses to go and can get it.

  • glassdog

Craig once again thanks for the information!  I will definitely stick with N4M as I have met so many terrific people here, and can always get the info I need so I don't make a huge faux pas.lol

My sailor tested today that it is very warm at Corry Station in the Ghetto rooms and no ac as yet.  Told him to take a book outside and read instead of watch tv or play games!

  • idahojeep

Just got done with my first Skype with J & J.  They said it is hot and like glassdog said "No air conditioning!" But they don't want to go outside either.

The other son said he wants Ramstein, Germany as his pick.  Definitely would visit him there.  They do not want to be at the same duty station once they get out of school.  That will be different for them since they have never been apart yet.  It was so great to actually "see" them!  Technology is wonderful...

  • sunshine73

my son is complaining about the heat  and no ac too. Someone told them that they will get AC next month. I don't know if this is true or not? He just started class today.

  • sunshine73

he did say that it is still better than Great Lakes.lol
  • Craig

idahojeep - If your sons ever do want to get stationed together, The Navy has a rule on it, you might want to read this instruction...

    http://www.npc.navy.mil/NR/rdonlyres/F2BA7B80-20B1-4434-B6BF-293051...

glassdos - I too say stick with N4M's.  Having to many websites is just really hard to keep up with.

sunshine - Every year, even when I was there in 1977, the room airconditioning gets shut off during the winter.  They then turn them back on around the summer.  But the rooms are still really hot in the spring.  So most leave the windows open at night, and buy a fan during the daytime.

  • Craig

Welcome NCR - Just curious is he a 4 year or 6 year CTT?  It all depend on that on how long he'll be in P-cola.

My nephew in in CTT school now (his PIR was 9/2/10), he was in holding company for a long time waiting for his clearance.  Per what the CTT do, go above in the discussion area, and click the "View All" button.  You will find a thread called:

CT info - Everything you wanted to know about a CT, but were afraid to ask...

    or just click this link...

    http://www.navyformoms.com/group/ctratemoms/forum/topics/ct-info-ev...

  • Craig

NCR - You, as a wife, will never understand his job.  Thus, your post that said "I don't think I ever will, lol" is true.   I have been married 25 years, and my wife still doesn't know what I do.  It's one area that in your marriage you should just leave alone, because he just can't tell you because of National Defense reasons.  In a marriage you "Pick and choose you're battles".  This is one battle that you will never win and is not worth persueing.

That's the life of a CT.... and it drives the mom's crazy too....

  • idahojeep

I have made it a point to tell my sons "Don't tell me anything!"  I don't want them to accidentally say something they could get in trouble for.  However I do want to know where they will be stationed and to hear from them at least once a week.  :>)
  • Craig

Suzy - Have her print off this Navy.mil article about ATT and show it to her recruiter.  If the recruiter doesn't know, ask him what there ESO (Education Service Office) phone # is, they will know....

    http://www.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=27534

In the below is the link to NKO.  I have never seen the course there, but I never looked for it either.

  • mumziepooh

Oooh - 9 days until PIR - then we get to be one of the cool kids at Correy!  :D  Craig - I have my card reader and coin ready - it is such a cool coin.  He totally digs those things so he will be excited.
  • mumziepooh

Hmm - are all CT's considered technical? I wish my son had known to do this in DEP - he was not terribly busy......He will be CTR. Not sure what he will do and probably never will but that is how he has always been - it is a perfect job for him.
  • glassdog

You do get used to not knowing.  I am not only a mom who has a son involved with a job that is run by security rules, but my hubby is also involved with it.  So you don't ask and they don't tell.  Just a "Did you have a good day?" is about it.lol
  • Craig

mumzie - The coin is a nice cheap gift.  I love mine, but I will lose in in about 2 months when I pass it to my nephew when he gets rated.  He'll love the card reader once he tries it.

  • cinder

I saw my sons new ID and it looked like it was a card reader.  He said you can put it in a computer is that right?
  • Craig

Kathie - CAC Card = ID Card.  What the CAC card reader does is scans the microchip on the CAC card and reads it.  So, lets say here at N4M's, how do you know I'm actually Craig?  You don't...  However, if I had to put in my ID card into a reader then you would know beyond a shadow of a doubt it's me.

Did you check out this link?  It explains it all...

    http://www.navyfamilies.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=17616

cinder - The CAC is the Common Access Card (ID Card).  It look almost like my American Express card with the chip in the middle.  If he wants to research Navy websites, then he must place that CAC card into a CAC card reader that is hooked up to the computer.

  • Craig

Kathie - I love helping out sailors.  They are who I passed the torch onto.  Any "Smart Card" reader will work AS LONG AS IT'S A USB TYPE.  They use to sell only PCA cards for CAC card readers, but they WILL NOT work because laptops don't have PCA slots anymore.  It's old technology....

Personally, I like the one at the Micro Center since it can do 63 different things besides being a "Smart Card Reader", and because it's cheap. I say this everytime, but I will say it again, your sailor will think it stupid gift.  Once he plays with it, and see's how powerful it actually is and how he can search for things from the confort of his own room, he will think it's the best thing since slided bread.  Again, the power it has is awesome.

    http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=...

  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

Im confused how liberty works.   From what Ive read it sounded like phase one was about in two weeks and they could go off base, with a buddy in uniform   However my son tells me he wont be able to go off base for 28 days?
  • navymom3

Angie-Maybe someone was teasing him as a joke. As my son has already been off base. And they got there the same time. Of course he is still currently on the NAS side waiting to class up and sec clearance before going to Corry side.
