Can someone tell me what it means to have ship to shore duty?  My son is doing his dream sheet this week
  • Craig

Angie - I just made a post for you about sea/shore duty up above in the discussion area:

    http://www.navyformoms.com/group/ctratemoms/forum/topics/what-is-se...

I sure hope your son as a CAC card reader. If he does, then it as simple as point-and-click for filling out the dream sheet. He can also find the cool duty stations by going into the Special Programs area. Things like PEP duty, White House duty, and all the other cool jobs. However, if he doesn't have a CAC card reader, then he will have a hard time selecting duty stations.

  • camenae

Craig, my husband isn't into hunting but we do plan on touring the caves and going to Washington DC and some other locations that are within driving distance...places that we couldn't visit otherwise being that we live in the South.
  • Craig

Kathie - I try to put out a bunch of information out there for you guys to understand.  Being a civilian is hard when you try to understand the Navy.  Having lived it, I understand it.  I am able to talk to all levels of understanding.  Most of the time my posts are lengthly, which some people get ticked off about.  They want 1 or 2 line sentences, which I can't do since I want you guys to totally understand what I'm talking about.  Thus yet, another long post.

Per the CAC card reader.  Most sailors haven't a clue about it or the awesome power it has.  When it comes to orders, they expect their career counsler to do all the work for them.  Remember, the orders are your sailor's responsibility. Not their Chief, not their career counselor, not their LPO, it’s them!...  Most fail to understand this.  Most of these sailors fail to look "outside the box" too.

What about this crap about “Looking outside the box”?
Yes, this is were almost every sailor messes up. You have so many other cool jobs using the Special Programs area. Most Sailors are so narrow minded that they never look at these positions.  Go do a seach at this link, and enter Jan 2000, then look at page 12 onwards to see the various special programs.
    http://www.navy.mil/allhands.asp?x=search

My duty stations were always great.  The only one that wasn't was Guam.  The only reason I got that one was because my PEP duty to Canada was cancelled because I was more senior that their LPO.  So I had to switch.

    Does that make sense?

  • Craig

camenae - The only advise I can give you for Sugar Grove because it's so isolate is bring lots of condoms.... You and your husband will be very busy...

  • cinder

Craig how do you do the laughing guy?
  • idahojeep

Does anyone have any info on Yokosuka Japan or how the ship duty for 3 years works if you are forward deployed?  Are they out all the time?  Do they live on the ship 24-7?  Thanks for any info.
  • camenae

clockard, unfortunately that was my first thing I thought of, lol. My hope is that they keep the roads plowed like they did in GL, but I'm sure that's difficult to do with the mountains. Being from Louisiana, I have NO earthly clue how to drive in the snow.

fraz, base housing is going to be our first choice because of the drive. If that's not available, then probably Harrisonburg or Staunton. Those look like the two closest "big" cities to Sugar Grove.
  • camenae

Craig, LMAO! Seeing as we are trying to get pregnant, I don't think those will be necessary.
  • Craig

cinder - The guy is really easy.  Just get the smiley you want on Google.  Then save it to your computer.  Then, click on the image button (which is just above this area when you type a post)  and is next to the button that says "LINK".   Now just browse to where the smiley is saved on your computer.  If you see smileys you like on post, you can just right click on them and save them too.  Remember the GIF smileys are the ones that move...

  • Craig

camenae - What this about "we are trying"?  He's a guy, we all want you women to think we are trying too.    Just like me, my wife had her tubes tied 20 years ago, but by God, I'm still trying too...

  • Craig

When I went to Sugar Grove the thing that impress me was the 300 foot satelite dish they were ready to install for Deep Space Probing.  Senater Robert Byrd wanted to build up West Virgina and got it approve to install it at the base.  However, they never built it, but they had the cement laid to hold up the dish, along with the tracks to move the dish.  The thing is massive.  Most of you could careless, but to us guys that work on satelite dishes, you'd be very impressed.  The thing would have been the biggest in the world.

  • camenae

    LOL, Craig!

Fraz, after talking to his instructor, hubby has decided he wants to live in Harrisonburg. For whatever reason he doesn't think it's going to be that bad of a commute. I hope he's right! I think he's so happy to have gotten shore duty that he'll take whatever is thrown in his path, lol. He told me when he first enlisted that he wanted to live off base so here we go... :D

Is there some way to find out an estimate of how much we'd get if we did a DITY move from LA to VA?

  • Craig

camenae - Having done many DITY, now called Personally Procured Move (PPM) I wouldn't recommend it.  It totally sucks now.   It works against the sailor now.  Your items are not insured.  If you break something, which you will, then its your responsibility.  They only pay you at 95% what a regular mover would charges.  But if you plan on filling up your car so you can have some of your items immediately, then the PPM is great.  But for normal house hold goods, its not worth breaking your back over, expecially if you are trying to get pregnant.  Don't risk your health to make just a few hundred $$$.

    http://www.smartwebmove.navsup.navy.mil/

    or

    https://www.cnic.navy.mil/Pensacola/OperatingForcesSupport/Military...

  • camenae

Yes, we planned on packing both cars with stuff that we didn't want broken, our dogs, household goods, etc. We knew about the 95%. We were hoping to do it this way so we have a little extra money to pay debt off with. I can put off getting pregnant until we move up there and get settled in. Paying off debt is a little more important to me right now as it could potentially affect my husband's security clearance.

As always, thank you for the links!

  • navymom3

Camenae- My oldest son did the son did the self move when moving from Washington state to Florida. It goes off the weight of the stuff you have to move. He did make some money on the move cause there was a lot of weight. But it was very time consuming. If you have friends to help load the moving truck it would be easier.  We didn't have help.
  • cinder

Hi Guys just wanted to see if I could make this smiley thing workBattleship.
  • idahojeep

@ Theresa - Thank you for answering.
  • glassdog

    Neat cinder! I like it.
  • camenae

We have help loading, but not unloading or driving. I'm hoping to find a company that will drive everything there for us. I talked to our local PPO office and she said we'd have between 3,000-4,000 lbs to move.
  • Craig

camenae - What do you mean "I'm hoping to find a company that will drive everything there for us"?  I'm thinking that you think you need to find a mover.  You don't.  Just go to the local base in your area and go to the Transportation Management Office (TMO).  They arrange everything.

To help you, I made a post in the discussion area with a bunch of links...

    http://www.navyformoms.com/group/ctratemoms/forum/topics/do-it-your...

  • camenae

Even for a PPM? That would be awesome if so! I thought with a PPM, WE had to do the arranging.
  • Craig

camenae - I guess I'm getting confused on what you said.  For a PPM you still need to get approval to do it.  You can't just go rent a Uhaul, pack it, and start driving.  The Navy runs on paperwork, so you have to go or call in your local base and talk to the TMO.

Per the arranging, yes, you find a rental truck place, buy your own boxes, and do everything, once everything is approved.  However, I am still confused about your statement of "I'm hoping to find a company that will drive everything there for us".  Are you saying you are trying to find a driver?  The reason I am asking, is because I knew someone that thought it would be easier to just hire a guy out of Craig's List to drive their household good for them to the next duty station.  What ended up happening was this guy ended up selling everything in the truck to support his crack habit, and ditched the Uhaul.   Notice I didn't say stolen because they willingly gave the keys to the guy.  Since the couple rented the truck, they were responsible for the truck being gone. So be careful about what you're doing....

  • Craig

cinder - Looks like you got the GIF smiley's working....  I love seeing visual things every so often.  It breaks up the long text (mostly mine ~ha)....

    Woo-hoo!

  • camenae

Craig, nooooooo not off Craigslist! I mean find a moving company that will drive our stuff over there for us. I know we have to do paperwork. They told us that we have to do our medical screenings before they will give him an further information so we're trying to do that ASAP.

As a sidenote: His orders say that he should report no later than July 1st so does that mean that he can come home for the two weeks after he gets out of A school or is there a possibility that they may keep him in Pcola for those 2 weeks? Sorry if it's a stupid question but I'm on information overload right now!

  • Craig

camenae - I totally agree with clockard. Both her and I have been through many moves, and one thing for sure is the Navy has this stuff down to a science.  You go to the TMO with your orders, and they arrange everything.  All you have to do is agree what date the movers will show up.  If you do it, you will need a power of attorney from you husband to allow you to do everything.

Secondly, as clockard says, do a partial PPM move so you can have your important stuff right away.  Per the leave, understand that if he drives to WV, then he will be paid per diem and will be given the time to do it.  You only have to travel 350 miles a day, if the remaining miles = more than 51 miles, you get an extra day.   So it's about 870 miles to Sugar Grove, so you will get 3 days.  One thing you never do is lets say you drive the entire distance in one day, then the Navy will only give you one day travel time.  So milk it out....

  • Craig

clockard - It actually a Joint Service rule.  All the military follows the same guidelines.  When your on the road you don't have to show receipts.  However, since I'm really not up on the 2011 requirements, maybe they do now (which I doubt).  However, if they do, all you do then is submit a lost receipt form.

What sucks is alot of sailors think they can just drive all night and make out by getting the same money.  They don't.  They get screwed out of that money.  If the sailor wishes to drive all night, that's fine, and long as they don't check into the command before their original date... If they do, it is offically documented that they arrived early.

Here is the link that explains it all....  Man I get a stiffy everytime I have a chance to post another link!  j/k

Here is a great Excel calculator too...

  • navymom3

We just finished a move from Washington state to Jacksonville Florida. My son had to turn in all the gas receipts and rental truck receipts/ They did not have to turn in any hotel or food receipts. He said they are given a per diem amount for each day and hotel stay.  We drove about 400-450 miles a day but we had 3 drivers. 2 for the rental truck and my son drove his car. We tried 500 the first day and it was to much with losing time for the time changes and then tried to do only 400.
  • Craig

Holy crapola, the new Selective Reenlistment Bonus's (SRB) just came out.  They totally suck for our sailors.  Example:  CTN when from a multiple of 3, to a .5 which is like a $30K difference (pay cut)....  That sucks...

To share the misery, here is the link...

  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

That's really does suck!! I guess many will be leaving when their time is up!
  • Craig

Woo-hoo!!!!  There is a new CT in the house.....

Today my nephew graduated.  He has now earned his rating.  10 more months of school left, then he's off to the fleet....

  • sunshine73

    woots!!!
  • navymom3

Craig tell your nephew congrats! Wow 10 more months. How long has he been there? My son was told to expect about 18 months for CTM. Going to finish the ATT class June 23rd then off to Corry.
  • Craig

navymom - He went to boot camp in July.  He got to Corry in Sept.  He's actually having alot of fun.

My rating was CTM.  I loved being a CTM!  It was really awesome.  When I went through school, I went to boot camp May 1978, and finally got to the fleet July 1980 after "A" and "C" school (2 years, 2 months) later.

Now, CTM's go to the fleet really quick.  Their "A" school is only 17 weeks. Then there "C" school will be ~10 weeks.

Woo-hoo for new sailors getting their rating....

  • camenae

Craig, thanks (as usual) for the link! It's been bookmarked and will be printed before moving. We're bringing both of our cars, so we plan on putting the majority of the stuff that we need in the cars. Also, there is NO way we could drive that in one night, lol! Good to know we'll have 3 days to get there.

We're throwing around the thought of a partial PPM. He still needs to get to the TMO. He went today but they closed early due to the celebration of The Battle of Midway on base. I think he's going back Monday morning. I talked to someone on the Belle Chasse base and they said the PPO in Pensacola would transfer him over to them since they were the local PPO but didn't say when. Guess we'll know something on Monday!

  • Wendi, CTR mom

My daughter just landed in Hawaii. She is so excited
  • Craig

Pat - Is she doing Direct Support (DIRSUP) out of Norfolk?  It sounds like she is.    I was a DIRSUPer out of the Philippines.  Being a DIRSUP person is one of the best things there is.  I wished more sailors would take that type of duty.    Woo-hoo for CTM's! (my rating).....

  • Craig

    Woo-hoo!!!

The lastest advancement are in....  Did your sailor make it?

    http://www.slideshare.net/NETPDTC/documents

  • Kelly (Pink) Curtis' Mom

Anyone know how long CTM school is?

  • navymom3

My son is CTM and they told him to expect to be in Pensacola for about 18 months. They first have the ATT class before they can go to Corry it lasts 5 weeks the paperwork says. then the CTM A tech class is 12 weeks. Then most of them will have a c-school class also. Mine had to wait about 7 or 8 weeks before he started the ATT class. These amounts may have been adjusted as the paperwork I have are from 09.
  • Kelly (Pink) Curtis' Mom

thanks navymom3!  my son got dropped from CTN school and just found out today he will be CTM instead.  So I'm just trying to find out all I can about CTM's!
  • glassdog

My son is learning some things in the Navy the hard way.  He signed up for a weekend trip through the Liberty Center and thought that because it was through there he didn't have to get a chit for the weekend.  He just found out today he needed to get the chit in last Friday.  He is going to try to get it in tomorrow, but I am not going to hold my breath.  If he doesn't get it he will be out 250.00.  Told him he is learning things the hard way, but we all do.

  • Craig

Patricia - I was a FES guy too.  Direct Support is probably the best sea duty you can have.  It's even better than Flag duty.  I had both of those.

When I was dirsup in the Philippines, we got alot of cool ports.  Austrilla, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Maccua, China, Mobassa. Seyshells.  However, we got alot of crappy ports too. Karachi Pakistan, Oman, Dijibouti, Bahrain....  But overall, I enjoyed everyone of those ports.

Kelly - For more info on CTM's you can go here

     http://www.navydep.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=75

NCRMOORE - What flavor is your CTT sailor?  Is he a 4yo or a 6yo?

  • NavyMom4J

My son, CTT, just called to let me know he is classing up on Thursday- His PIR was April 29th- so from what I can tell online here- this is pretty soon - all in all only a month wait. He said he would be done in August. He is excited not to wait any longer- although he volunteered colors and now has volunteered Rifle drill. I don't know if he can do both classes and rifle drill.  At any rate- finally gets to start classes. !!!
  • Kelly (Pink) Curtis' Mom

Thanks everyone!  My son has been in Pensacola since last October so he's really ready to come home.  I wonder if he will get time between now and when he classes up for the new rate...

Do all CTM's go on ships or are some land based?

  • CTmomof3

Those that are relatively new to Corry can you answer a question?  I've been getting mixed answers. On the Day of PIR do they leave for Corry right away...like within an hour or so or do they leave  real  late at night/early in the morning..

    Thanks

  • NavyMom4J

    CTmom-

It all depends on their orders. And you son will be able to let you know closer to his PIR date what his are. My son was given liberty right after PIR until 8pm that same day. They all (in his division) had to be back in their compartments by 8pm which meant he had to be dropped back off at the base by 7:30 because it takes 1/2 to walk to his ship. We actually dropped him off at 7:15 and the lines of cars dropping their sailors off was starting to get really really long, and some of the sailors were jumping out of their cars to run back in to be on time! so make sure you give yourself time due to the long lines of cars bringing their sailors back.

His flight left the next day. I went to the airport he was leaving from so I could spend some time with him before his flight left- You will have to get the information from your sailor exactly what his times are. Usually those that are staying in Great Lakes have more liberty over the weekend. But those going to Corry leave the next day-. I did hear of one who left on Sunday.

  • sunshine73

CTmom~My experience was almost identical to Navymom4j's. My son's bus left RTC at 1am the Saturday after PIR. only your sailor can tell you for sure.
  • navymom3

cTmom- my son and some of his friends did not leave until sunday. They were all told at the beginning they would be leaving on saturday. Until they got the plane ticket and were not leaving until sunday. I have heard of some not leaving until tuesday at the latest. Like the others said only your son will know.
