Let the adventure begin! Sailor came home on the 16th, got married on the 23rd, leaves today back to Pensacola to collect his gear, driving to Norfolk, checks in then is flown to his ship for the start of his job as 6-yr CTT. Wow...we are all exhausted but excited to see what happens. It almost feels like the day he left for bootcamp. Trying to reign in all these emotions.
  • NavyMom4J

roysmom: I can only imagine- wow- and a wedding to boot! Congrats to your sailor!
  • glassdog

Just a reminder for the Colorado folks that want to go to the packing party.  It is tomorrow at the Arvada Recruiting Center.  Further info is under a sub grouping in the Colorado Moms group.

I have a CTR tee shirt idea in my head now I just need to get it drawn out!  Will try to do that by tomorrow!

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Wow! So many weddings! Must be something in the cryptology water fountain. We have no idea when his wife will be able to follow him from CA to VA. He should be back to base sometime early Nov then out again for some time end of Jan. Such a tough start to our youngsters and their spouses but I can sure see why they do it...military sure helps them to grow up fast!
  • navymom3

I smile I answered your question on the pensacola page. My son is CTM.

Lady Hamilton- You daughter will like Corry. My son works the quarterdeck during the week either morning or afternoon. He is in holding for c school and that is his job. He said it is a stress free while waiting for class to start the end of Oct. The stress will be back on then.

Your daughter must be a fleet returnee to be at the gateway inn?

  • navymom3

Lady- My older son has been in for 5 years and is AT2. He just resigned last fall so in a few years he is thinking of changing if he has to. He said one of his specialties though is under manned so he may not have to. He said he would go CT also if he has to. I think it was really to compete with his brother who is CTM.
  • cinder

All top security clearances have that same requirement .
  • navymom3

Lady, That was fast in getting to start class up. Must of had her assigned to the class before she even left her last command. That was better than hurry up and wait. LOL
  • CTmomof3

My son received..soft orders...to FT Meade. Anyone have info on this.  Housing etc.  Is Ft Meade a good place or just an ok place to be station.  Part of me is happy that he won't be stationed too far away but part is disappointed for him as he wanted to be out west.
  • CTmomof3

How are the barracks? He's in the "ghetto" at corry. My son is a lowly E1 guess he'll be in barracks forever. Thanks I will join the ft Meade group. He doesn't graduate A school till mid November so I was shocked he got soft orders this far out.
  • Paula (was Capricorna)

CTmomof3 - I suspect that your son and mine may be in the same CTR class finishing mid-November.  Mine just got soft orders for Hawaii and he mentioned others were going to Ft. Meade.  He's a lowly E1 too.  My son was hoping for Japan but is just glad to be getting out of Florida (not his favorite state).

Can anyone point me towards the correct Hawaii group I should join?

  • navymom3

Paula the bases are on the island of Oahu. There is a Oahu group. Congrats on him getting Hawaii.
  • Paula (was Capricorna)

    Thank you Navymom3!
  • sunshine73

Hey Paula I'm a member of the Hawaii group too. If my son ever gets there. He has been in C school forever it seems. He is so ready to move on and out of P'cola. He has had orders since June but his C school is dragging.
  • sunshine73

CTmom, mine has been in the getto since March and is ready to move on.lol

  • navymom3

CTmom and sunshine mine is also in the ghetto. He was going to try to move but then his roommate finished school and left so he is by himself right now. Has been for 2 weeks now.
  • glassdog

Paula and sunshine73 the group to join is listed as Hawaii and is located on Oahu.  The person who leads it is named Pat.  It is a good group and very informative.  My son is in Hawaii now up at Kunea, which is in the middle of the island.  Do you know if you sailors will be at Pearl or Kunea?
  • Paula (was Capricorna)

Hi all and Happy Friday!  My son is coming home tomorrow for a 3 day weekend!  I'll get more details when I see him (maybe...  he's pretty tight lipped).

sunshine73 - my son is very ready to get out of P'cola too and he hasn't been there as long as your sailors have been!

Susan R - I can't imagine anyone being in Corry since 09/2008!  Your son deserves a medal!

  • sunshine73

My sailor enjoyed his time there until most of his buddies graduated A school and moved on. Now he wants to move on too. He is ready to work and not do the school part. One of the reasons that he joined the Navy was because after 2 years of college, he was tired of it. He will be in Kunea.
  • Paula (was Capricorna)

Son signed up for 4 year CTR.  He is doing well in A School.  Son arrived home on first leave today for a 3 day weekend.  He will graduate in mid-November and has soft orders for Hawaii.  He said Instructor wants to talk to him about attending C School.  That would mean he would have to extend his commitment an additional 2 years. It doesn't sound like he is interested.   Should I encourage him to attend C School?
  • cinder

That means he is doing very well in his classes. Maybe he is not sure about that long of a commitment but an extra 2 years sounds long to him but in the scheme of life that is hort. My son is a 6 year Ctt and is happy.
  • sunshine73

Paula~ I didn't know sailors got to pick whether or not they go to C school. My son is so ready to go to the fleet. He is so tired of school.
  • Pamela

Can't wait for my son to graduate on Friday.  He's 2nd in his class!  Only by a minute amount!!  He's so ready for his 21 day leave before heading to Japan.  I'm so anxious to see him.  Anyone else's son graduating this Friday?
  • Paula (was Capricorna)

Pamela - that's great about your son being 2nd in his class.  Congrats on the graduation!

Sunshine73 - not sure if they get to choose to go to C School either, but he would have to agree to 2 additional years so there must be some element of choice there.

Can someone shed light on how this works?

  • Craig

Paula - DO NOT encourage him to sign a two year extension for a "C" school.  It's not worth it.  Here's why, The school maybe 4 additional months for the "C" school but the payback is 2 additional years.   Why extend your time in the Navy when he truly doesn't know yet what the true Navy life is all about?  Doing 4 years is nothing.  After his 4 years he can either use the STAR program to get a "C" school, or he can use his GUARD 2000 to be the 1st on the list to go to his choice of duty station (if the billet is available).  If he goes to is a Joint Service command that isn't run by the Navy, they might send him to "C" school anyways.  If they do, he doesn't have to extend his time because the schooling is paid for under the command OPTAR (ie their pot of money).  But why would they send some sailor that already has a NEC?  They won't.

This link shows the critical Naval Enlistment Codes (NEC) for the various ratings.  These jobs are HOT!  The Navy is in short supply of them.  Just go to the middle of the page and look for "Critical NEC List in Fleet Ride".  You will see the CTR's with NEC 9138, 9105, 9147, 9149, and 9150 are needed.

    http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/career/careercounseling/pages...

Secondly, if you go to the same link above and find "Creo Listing" you will see that for CTR's, the creo is a 1.  Which means they are undermanned.

Undermanning usually means more reenlistment bonus money.  But with todays sucky economy, more sailors are staying is, so the bonus for CTR is 0.  That will change in 4 years, I think.  You can see the lastest bonus levels here:  (NAVADMIN 253-11)

    http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/messages/Documents/...

So, the bottomline is he gains nothing with having an NEC at his level right now.  He will loose more benefits than he will gain.  (ie GUARD 2000, a future reenlistment bonus (if any), the STAR program... the list is alot of stuff.

So.....  Craig's thought of the day is not to do it.  However, my disclaimer is, it's his life, and you can only give him the details.  The bottomline is it's his choice....

  • momoffour(Ship 11 div 119)

Hey Craig, what are the zones and how can we tell what our Sailor is LOL!!
  • navymom3

momoffour- the zone are the number of years they have been in. zone one is 6 years or less.
  • navymom3

I smile- It usually takes about 2 weeks between phases. Depends on how quick there watch quals get done and if they stay out of trouble.

Your son will have the ATT pre class which is not considered classing up. They class up when the finally start there class for there job. So that will be once he gets over to Corry for his CTM class. It took my son 6 weeks before he started his ATT class. But yours could start earlier.

  • Paula (was Capricorna)

Thanks Craig - I think he has it all figured out - the smart a$$.  Either that, or he already talked to you.  He says A school is coming easy to him and he's enjoying it.  I sent him a card reader months ago.  I think the guarantee of 3 years in Kunia is difficult to resist.  He's ready to go.
  • Craig

    Happy Birthday to the Navy!

    All done Craig!

Does anyone know what score you need to have to receive honors from A school?  Is it the same for all A schools?  Is it more important to get honors in C school?
  • NavyMom4J

I am not sure- good question because when my son showed me his graduation certificates, one says graduation with honors. He has two- one for A school and one for C school. I did not ask him what that meant- now I will!

  • navymom3

I know there is honor grad which is top of the class but then during graduation when they called them up some they said graduated with honors. I will ask my son and see if he knows. He just graduated a school.
  • NavyMom4J

Cinder: My son's certificate said with honors for the one from C school- he said he got 97 in that class. I think A school was 92....which did not say "with honors" so you could be right- depends on what their score was I am thinking.

  • cinder

Thanks guys, he said that his score is 95.1 but wasn't sure if that included his final.  There are some really smart people in his class.
  • sunshine73

I just got this deal offer from visit Destin: 3 night and a free dolphin cruise for around $160. The website is http://bit.ly/oLeom2.

I have never used them but it might be something to look into.
  • Chimelle 3/149

LadyHamilton, My son is signed up to run that race. I read the story. How awful. He said they got the whole buddy system talk and were informed of this incident. I think it's great that they are doing the race for it.
  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Haven't been on here in a while because my mother has been in the hospital.  She is home now and hopefully will be on the road to recovery.

My son's FB status today was "Ummm, may be in Pensacola for another year" Then in one of the comments he stated that they want him to continue with more schooling.  He graduated from A school for CTT on Fri. Sept. 23, classed up for Shipboard Ops the following Monday, on Sept. 25 and has keeping above a 95% average in that.  What could they possibly be talking about now?  There were 20 kids in his CTT class and he was about 15th, so not anywhere near the top of the class.  He is soooo over Pensacola right now and just wants to get on with his career.  He was originally set for AE after BC, but shouldn't have been put in that so he was re-classed in April.  He has now been in Pensacola since his Dec. 17 BC graduation.   Does anyone know what this could be about?  He is a 4 year CTT.

  • cinder

Craig talked about this a few pages back.  Are they asking him to sign up for additional 2 years?  They must be really short on 6 year CTT.  Seems like they are asking everyone. I beleive 95% is honors so he is doing well.
  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Thanks cinder, that's what I was thinking too.  I'll read back a few pages.
  • cinder

My son gets done with a school in 3 weeks and was told he has to wait until march for c school he is a 6 year Ctt.
  • navymom3

Cinder- Wow that is a long wait. My son only has 2 more weeks until his c school starts. But he is ctm. He graduated a school on sept 16th. So he only had a 6 week wait.
  • cinder

It doesn't make sense. Maybe that's why they are recruiting some four year Ctt to six years.
  • Craig

For those that have CTT's as sailors:

I have a CTT depper on my website that wanted more info about CTT's, since there is truly no website that ever says anything about the CT rating, I went ahead and posted some stuff for him.

Maybe it will help some of you that have either 4 year or 6 year CTT's understand some of the stuff.

    Go here:

    http://www.navydep.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2004

(Note: I placed this in an open area so you don't need to register)

Betsy - It doesn't sound like he's a 4yo CTT, he sounds like a 6yo.  I wouldn't say a thing, and let them put him through the school.  Hopefully they won't catch on and he will get all that schooling for free (ie not having to do 6yo).

Secondly, most sailors at Corry wish they could leave and "begin their careers".  They will soon understand that the best ship in the Navy is no better than the worst shore duty.  By this, I'm saying, he will soon realize that Corry isn't that bad, in fact it's kind of cool.

So, just remember when he writes you from his ship and says "We've have been deployed now for 106 days, and it sucks".  You will say, "but remember, there is worst places in the world, like shore duty at Corry Station".

He'll cuss you at 1st, but then he will realize that the "grass isn't always greener".  This will always be in the back of his head when he needs to decide if he wants to extend duty somewhere.  It did for me....

Mine was "I can be at a remote shore duty in Scotland, or I can be on a ship".  I'll take the remote duty for 1 more year....

  • Pamela

All graduated and here with us for 20+days in Daytona Beach.  Will fly out to Japan on 11/12.  So happy to have him with us in our new home state!  He loves it here.  So much better than Conover, NC.  Right on the ocean.  He's loving every minute of it so far.  Good luck to everyone else who has a son/daughter graduating from Corry Station in the future!
  • cinder

Thanks Craig you are always a wealth of info. I tried signing up on that site a long time ago and never heard back what's the deal.
  • navymom3

Ismile- I think my son waited about 6 weeks. I could be off a week or 2.
