Our son said it was long and boring.  They repeated questions over and over.

boiler - There are two types of poly's.

    CI = CounterIntelligence

    FSP = Full-Scope Polygraph

The CI is pretty easy. I can't go over the questions due to security reasons, but basically things like do you plan to overthrrouw the U.S. government?

The FSP is totally different.  Wow, they probe you like a wild night of sex.  Geez, they get down to everything.  Heck you feel like smoking a cigarette afterwards to bask in the glow ~ha.

The very 1st question for both poly's is always a "given lie".  They have a list of general basic question and have you choose one.  Mine is always "Have you broken any laws in the past 24 hours".  Hell, I just drove 90 mph to get to the poly on time,  so it was so easy to think about that one.  You answer with a lie and say "no".  They use this to calibrate the machine.  Then they ask the remaining questions.

The list of questions run about 30 minutes for a CI.  The FSP is ~1 to ~1 1/2 hours.  The 30 or 1 hours questions is called a "Set".   Once you're done with the 1st set you take a break.  Then you start the second set.  The questions are exactly the same and worded exactly the same way as the 1st set.  The only difference is they are in a different order.  To pass the poly you must have passed 3 sets. I once had 9 sets because I had a cold and sneezed during the set which cancels the test.  You must start the set again.

    One of my funny stories:

I found this out later.  So, when you finally get done with the poly, they have you bring 3 people (military) to interview them about you.  It was the weekend and the only guys I had to do mine was the section people I worked with.  So, the investigator who works side-by-side with the poly guy, started his questions to these guys.  Well my guy came back and told me what he said.  Here is how it goes:

Investigator:  "Does Craig do anything immoral"

    Sailor:  "yes".

Investigator: Stops, totally off guard,  and looks up puzzled (since NO ONE ever answers Yes) and ask "And what does he do that is immoral?".

    Sailor:  "He reads Playboy".

    Investigator:  "and"?

Sailor:  "That's it, reading that magazine is totally immoral"

This sailor comes back and tells me this and I said "what's up with that".  He says "Craig, you know reading that magazine is immoral".  I was like WOW, geez, if he thought that was immoral he should hear the rest of my life!

The stuff you learn on N4M's.....~ha

My sailor has made it to Japan. I am sure he is going to enjoy his time there.

  • boilermom

Thanks for the enlightening info on the polygraph Craig. It must be a riot to work with you,ha. What if someone fails the poly, what does the navy do when they have invested so much money into your training?
  • Craig

You will have your SBI done before you start "A" school.  In the field/fleet you will have your CI or FSP poly done.  It depends on what command you go to on which one they do.

They use to not even give a CI poly's, but thanks to John Walker, now they are done all the time.  See here:

    http://www.usni.org/magazines/navalhistory/2010-06/navys-biggest-be...

If you fail it, you're gone.  The failure is recorded with all the agencies.  You will have a really hard life after a failure.  You will be discharged under MILPERSMAN 1910-156, SEPARATION BY REASON OF UNSATISFACTORY PERFORMANCE

    See para 2d here:

Our CTT son is done with his tour in Hawaii.  He made it to Denver this morning and is staying at the brand new Air Force Lodge there.  He says his rooms are awesome.  So for the next two months, it's school, studying, and snowboarding!!!

  • sunshine73

I haven't been able to find a Corry coin. If you find out, please let me know.  They did not have them when I was there last fall.

  • CTmomof3

Here is the site that sell the same coins that my husband can get in the pentagon and I believe they also supply the Nex.

Craig you must have loved today's game go Broncos!
  • CTmomof3

Craig or anyone else with a japan connection. My son and wife will be reporting to Okinawa early march. He was told the duty station is white beach however is appears there really is nothing there and he'll be "at" Kadena afb. Can anyone shed some light on this? No on base housing so must live off...sounds expensive. Should he look for housing near white beach or Kadena?
  • navymom3

CTmomof3- There are several mom's om the Japan page that have sailors in Okinawa. You might hop over there and ask. I think they are corpsman.

My son is in Japan but in Yokosuka,

  • Craig

cider - Woo-hoo the Broncos game was awesome that day.  We had a great time.  My son's vacation just ended yesterday.  He really did a lot in 12 days.  2 football games, 1 baseball game, 2 casino trips...etc).  I bet it will be really hard for him to start work again.

  • CRF230dad

Craig, Which poly do they give the CTTs and at what point in P-Cola do they get it?

  • Craig

CRF - It based on where they go for their 1st duty station.  Some sailors actually stay in Pensacola for their 1st duty station so they will do some of the poly's there.

Sorry I won't get into which duty stations do the FSP.  However, I will say it cost way to much to have everyone do a FSP, so only the ones that need it, do it.  Once your sailor tells you which one he did, then you'll be able to put it together.  Do a search on http://www.clearancejobs.com/jobs/  and use the keyword "Full Scope Poly" you will be able to see who are requesting them and where their at.

Any sailor within 1 year of their discharge date should ask their division officer to put them in a compartmentalized program that requires a FSP.   The reason is once they get out of the Navy and they have the FSP, they are set.  They will be paid good money having a FSP.

    Here a really good read:

Thanks for all of that information. My son had his yesterday and is really glad it is behind him. I'll have to ask him which one he took. Just a tip to tell your sailors who still have to take it, make sure they eat before they go.

Great Navy Tribute!  I got this from a LT friend of mine.  Enjoy your weekend :)

If he takes the FSP at the beginning of his hitch should he still request it again before separation?

    CTmom -

We're stationed in Japan - though we're at the other end, up in Misawa instead of down in Okinawa.  (Though we're also on an Air Force Base)  It is expensive - honestly, pretty much everywhere in Japan is, especially with the exchange rate lately...

BUT - the good news is that they will get COLA to offset the costs (cola stands for cost of living allowance).  How much they get is based on a lot of things (location, paygrade, if they are here with our without dependents, etc), but it's really high here.  Also, all of Japan has a "base first" policy, so if there's housing available for them in govt quarters, even if they don't like it, they have to accept it, they won't be authorized to live out in town.  BUT - if they don't have housing available for them, then they will also get OHA.  That's sort of like BAH, only the overseas version.  The OHA rates are really good, too, and are designed to cover the really high costs of living out in town.

So, even though it's expensive, most military families over here do just fine financially - in fact, in a lot of ways, they do better than they do in the States :-)

  • navymom3

CTmom- my son has been in Yokosuka for 10 days now and said it is expensive. Most of the money is coins and they go up to 500 yen which is about 6.50 american. But the coin is a bit smaller than a quarter. So it seems odd to him. But he will get used to it. He is headed to Tokyo sunday to the auto show on the train. He is excited.

  • CRF230dad

Is there a way to view more than 10 posts per page?

Is there a way to search my older posts?

  • Debbie G.

My son starts school Tuesday also and said there were fleet returnees so the class is small.  That's all I know LOL!

  • sunshine73

my son had fleet returnees in both his A and C schools.

  • navymom3

Ismile I am not craig but I think fleet returnees do get into class first. Look at it this way it is cheaper to keep paying someone who is e1 or e2 and have them wait and do busy work than an e5 just sitting around getting paid. There is quite a bit of difference in there pay. My oldest is e5 and my middle son was e1. He is now e3 soon to be e4.

  • navymom3

I smile good luck to your son on doing good in his classes. My son loved his classes and is now at his duty station. He was suppose to go to the Tokyo auto show yesterday with friends from work but no one decided on a time so he didn't go. He tried to get them pinned on a time by suggesting one but no one said thats a great time. He was disapointed. Said it sucked being the new guy. But I reminded him it would get better. He has only been there 10 days.

  • Debbie G.

I'm just glad that my son hasn't had to wait months to start school! He would be bored out of his mind! (he's an E3)

  • navymom3

I smile my son and his roommate have the same jobs also. They had there att class together but once they went to Corry for there a school class my son got to start class first. Once they are at Corry and in class they will have them do a dream sheet as to where they want to go. In his class the top 2 got there orders first. Then the rest of the class about a week later. Some got changed once they got the written ones. But only a couple of them. He had a fleet returnee in his c school class that went to Japan with him. Only he is stationed on a ship.

I knew my son wanted overseas and encouraged him to see the world since the Navy was paying for it. Even though I would have loved to have him close by. He found a texting app that he can text us for free which is great.

  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

I Smile, my son finished his CTT classes in mid November and he is still "on hold" for Orders.  He did have fleet returnees in his class and they received their Orders before the finished their A school classes.  One of his good friends (an E-6) from his class has Orders for San Diego in April, but my son still has no idea when he will get his Orders.  Hope this helps.  Some rates are pretty full right now, even though at the time that my son chose that rate, it was actually undermanned.  :(

  • Craig

Susan -  Woo-hoo on the IDW!!!!

That will look really sweet on his uniform...

  • CTmomof3

Thanks for the info Sailorwife and Navymom.  He has a dependent and an E5 was already told there is no base housing for them.  Good to know then that... expenses...may be covered.

I have two questions.  Does my son and his wife go over together or does he go first and she follow?  Also, has anyone ever had a car stored?  He needs his truck stored, has been approved however is nervous about leaving it for 3yrs?

  • navymom3

Ismile so glad he finally got to start his att class. Now the fun begins.

  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

My son just called me and said he has gotten verbal Orders for the CVN 74 John C. Stennis out of Bremerton, WA.  He is excited to get more details and I am just happy that he will finally be starting his Navy adventure.  He had wanted a cruiser, but he said "It is, what it is."

  • Craig

CTmom - It's would be much better for him to sell the car.  Storing it for 3 years just isn't good for the car, plus the deprecation $$$ would be really bad.  Have him get a new toy when he gets back.

If his wife is cleared to gets command sponsorship, then it's better to go with him.  The Navy will pay them to live in a hotel, and will pay meal costs.  It's so much fun to experience the change together.  They are a couple....

  • amberrose

Betsy - Great news on the verbal orders!!!!!  Congrats!!!!!

  • cinder

I haven't heard anyone talk about the cryptology shirts, what's going on with them?  Would really like to get one.

  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

thanks amberrose.  He is pretty excited to get started.  After all the things that were said on here about the CTT's funding and being "saturated" in the fleet, I worried that he might spend his entire career leading work parties and doing room inspections at Corry station.  lol

  • Craig

Per the t-shirts, I still need to get with Glassdog and get then started.  With Christmas and Glassdog moving, we haven't moved forward.  I will sent her an email and get this moving again...

  • Craig

Betsy, he will miss those days at Corry.  Holding company is so much fun....You watch... he will say those were the best of times...

  • Debbie G.

OK, I'm so out of the loop (because my son is so private) - what are the Cryptology T-Shirts?
  • navymom3

Debbie- Since there are not many choices of tshirts at the nex for the Cryptology jobs. Craig and Glassdog were going to design some and maybe get them printed. I don't think it is anything that our son's would know about.

  • Debbie G.

I'd love to order one or more.  Let me know!

  • boilermom

Anyone at Corry for A school graduation tomorrow?
  • cinder

See Craig you guys could make a butt load selling t shrits make sure you have women's style
  • Debbie G.

(Unfortunately) need plus size t-shirts! lol!

  • cinder

I just need scoop neck hate boys they choke me lol
  • Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor

Haha, Craig, I'm sure you are right, he will miss those days.

I would also love to get in on the t-shirts.

  • Craig

Maybe I should get some of these "man hole covers" too...  Man, I found these on Ebay and find them really funny....  Why?  Because I'm just wondering who the sailor is saluting. I'm thinking it's probably the short guy who is "standing at attention & saluting" in front of him (if you know what I mean)......

  • salpetty

Craig...you kill me!  Hilarious..  My daughter saw a shirt at Corry that said, "In God We Trust.  All others we monitor"  Or something to that effect.  I thought it was pretty clever.

  • cinder

My son bought me that t shirt for my birthday. We need something like that for cryptology group.
  • harpist mom

I would like one of those shirts too. my son will be in cryptology training after boot camp
