We got our son one for Christmas. He really appreciated it.

  • CRF230dad

Although it was only a weekend trip (for a wedding) and we didn't see him much, we'll take whatever we can get. I know one thing I like waiting at the gate with him better than curbside goodbyes. They suck... lol Well 40 more days and we"ll hit P-Cola to visit him. Til then...

  • salpetty

You'll be in heaven when you can visit him in Pensacola.  You should be able to see a lot of him then...enjoy :)

  • proudmom

Will their address in Pensacola be a PO Box or will there be an address I can send a pkg over night with Fedex

  • cinder

When they get there they will be able to give you an address to mail stuff.  It will not really get their over night or next day because it has to go through the military mail first.  I always mail as cheap as possible LOL.

  • proudmom

Cinder. Thank you. My son got there Saturday but said he won't have the address until today. I can ship pkgs from work with Fedex or UPS but I don't think they ship to a PO Box. Do you know how long it will be before we can visit?

  • salpetty

Their address will be a regular address and then a PMB number.  For instance the address looks like this:

    1234 Main Street

    PMB 1234

    Pensacola, FL 00000

They can get stuff from UPS.  I mostly sent my daughter stuff using the Large Flat Rate box from the US Post office.  You can put 20 pounds of stuff in there for around $16.  Way cheaper than UPS or Fedex (even if you used multiple boxes).  We live in California and it arrived in as little as 2 days.

  • salpetty

Oh...and you can get flat rate boxes for free either at the post office or you can order them on line and they'll send you as many as you want...again for FREE!

  • sammy1990

And be careful, one component of FedEx can't get on base. The kids have to drive a distance to pick it up.
  • proudmom

Thank you everyone for the information since I will be shipping some items this week!!

  • proudmom

Really.. Is there anyway to know which one?

  • sammy1990

My memory is telling me ground, but I can't be sure. Have ur son ask the mail room. My son told me like 3 times as I was Sending his phone. Seems someone else got their phone that way and had no way to go get the it from where it was stored.
  • Reid's Ma

Son is in 7th yr. as sonar tech in SD. Orders for Monterey in Oct. '12 when committment to distroyer is complete. Know nothing about language school ex that washout is high! and that a family member went there 50 yrs. ago! What do we need to know?

  • Smom

Reid's Ma, my son has been in Montery since August. The classes are intense but the instructors are there to help them. They have study halls and tutors. The classes are small which helps. For us family members it's a beautiful place to visit. I will sure try to answer any questions you might have. There is also a CTI group on Navy4Moms.
  • Reid's Ma

Smon, gee I thought I was on the CTI site --not too good at this.... when his ship was commissioned (Apr.09) in Oxnard, CA we then drove up PCH 1 to Monterey and SF. Yes, Monterey is really nice! He's been in SD and before that Hawaii, so the climate works for him! Guess he'll never want to live in the heartland again.

  • Reid's Ma

I don't even know the lingo of CT. Is there a place to go to have the different rates explained? and what they do?

humm, ask me about the USS Stockdale (distroyer) -- I've been all over it!  ;-)

  • navymom3

Reidsma you can go to this link and it will explain what each CT does.

Ok, thanks! that link was very helpful! I got to quickly check it out while the puppy naps.

Does anyone know about air force cargo flights that carry military personnel overseas? What are these flights like (12 hours on a plane across the ocean ain't no fun!)? What air force base in Washington state would these flights originate from? They only fly out on Thursdays if you can get on the list. My son graduates C school from Goodfellow, comes home (if he would get his reservation made), and then will fly out from home to Seattle on this AF cargo flight directly into Misawa. He doesn't really know what is going on and at this point I will be relieved when he is finally in Japan and can relax! I need some info and you all are the experts! Thanks gals (and guys).

  • Craig

Most of the time the AMC (Air Mobility Command) flights are just contracted civilian airlines.  The government just pays them to use their pilots and planes.  However, they do have C141's that make routine flights.  But I would think that would be strange in your sons case.

Really missing my son today on my birthday. He call yesterday quite upset because they heard that all leaves for anyone in student status at Corry have been revoked indefinitely. Which means that other that a long weekend with an out-of-bounds chit no one is going home on leave. Also for any CTTs not already in V3 training, no one can class up until October because of the budget. He was hoping to start mid May after C school graduation. So if he doesn't get shipboard ops and SLQ training done before then and depending on when orders come in, he will be stuck at Corry well into 2013. It wouldn't have been so bad but not being able to come this summer has really got him down. We may not see him until he leaves for his 1st duty station sometime nest year. 8^(

  • CRF230dad

Don't know the reason for the clamp down at Corry but I fear this may have the reverse affect and some sailors may just quit.

  • salpetty

CRF:  First of all.. Happy Birthday to you :)  Do not despair.  The Navy changes on a dime.  I swear.  I've seen it happen.  One week there is no funding for anything and the next week all of a sudden doors and opportunities open.  Take this info with a grain of salt.  At some point during A school, my daughter "heard" that it didn't look like anyone would get orders till October.  Well guess what, all of a sudden billets opend up and she's heading out in a couple weeks.  I've also seen this happen to myself.  I swear it seems like the Navy budget changes on a minute by minute basis.  Hang in there dad. and again Happy Birthday!!!

  • CRF230dad

Thank you salpetty, I get what your saying but the no leave thing just makes matters worse. Gotta roll with the punches.

  • salpetty

Yeah....the "no leave" thing totally doesn't make sense.  I'll cross my fingers for you.

  • cinder

Wow! I will have to call my son tonight.  He was really hoping to be done in Nov. and than come home for 30 days before going to his duty station.  He has already been there a year from middle of March last year. That will be a 6 mos. wait to class up for the V3 classes.  I hope you are right Salpetty.

  • cinder

    Happy Birthday CRF

  • salpetty

Unfortunately we (or our kids/spouses) are at the mercy of the Navy and all the changes it entails :(  Crossing my fingers and praying for all of them in that situation.

  • sammy1990

the start of the new fiscal year is oct. 1. the money from 2011 needs to be spent/accounted for being spent somewhere around august. starting in june/july, funds will be flushed out and suddenly there is money. not saying that there will be the money they need for orders, but about this time of year the squadrons cry "poor" and then about july they are rushing around trying to find ways to spend the $ that has come out of the cracks... the reason is that it has to be spent by the end of the fiscal year or they lose it and risk having the budget reduced for the next year. and with that, i will stop, or i might go into a tangent with the spending i have witnessed over the years. :-0

  • boilermom

Thanks Craig for the info. I forwarded it on to my son.

  • NavyMom4J

Had the best weekend visiting my sailor in San Diego - was able to get a tour of his ship - the USS Lake Champlain- the absolute THRILL of my life!  It is one thing to see these ships from a distance, another to be standing right next to them let alone board one!  If ever any of you have the chance to go visit your sailors - DO IT!!!

  • calliecl

NavyMom4J - how exciting to tour the ship! My son still deployed but would love to do that when he returns. So glad to hear you were able to visit!
  • Fay

Can someone explain V3 classes to a newbie. ? Thanks

  • cinder

There are V2 and  V3 which is a specific system that CTT's work on.  Of course Craig can tell you much more but I was told that V2 are on small ships and V3 is for both.  They take this class after their C school and I believe ship board ops.  Correct me if I am wrong.

  • Fay

Thanks cinder- I am in the learning phase.  My son is suppose to start classes in his A school this week.  All information is appreciated.

  • CRF230dad

My son said there are no longer any V2 units on any ships in the fleet but they must still learn it. They are trying to merge the two to get rid of the redundancy but the Navy can't seem to get it together.

  • cinder

Thanks CRF Dad have you gotten a date they finish C school?

  • CRF230dad

    May 15

  • cinder

Thanks can't seem to get info from my son lol
  • Craig

FAY - Go to this link.  I talk all about the "V" schools.

    http://www.navydep.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2004

CRF - They still have V2 in the fleet.  My nephew is on the road now to San Diego and will fly to catch his ship.  I think what you meant to say is "They are not putting V2's on new construction ships anymore".

  • Fay

Thanks Craig, but it won't let me register to get there- Says i am a spammer- Don't know what i did wrong for it to say that.

  • Craig

shoot, I thought I had that in an open area.  I'll fix it once I get off of work.  However, it says that your a spammer because you are using a common user name that spammers normally use.  If you ever have that problem on any website, just add some numbers to your user name....

  • navymom3

Congrats I smile. He could take over and finish 1st. Have him study a lot and make sure he gets no safety hits. He will know what I am taking about. My son and another were neck and neck and he worked hard and finished first. Have they started the on hands scenarios yet? That is the area my son excelled in and passed up the other guy.

This time you can drive to graduation.

  • navymom3

ISMILE The on hands scenarios is where my son took the lead. And never looked back. He said that was the easy part as he is good at that. In my son's class the top 2 got to pick orders from the 2 available. He chose Japan as he wanted overseas for his first duty station. It is hard knowing we can't see him for a while but I know he loves it over there and that is what counts.

  • Craig

    All -

I thought I had this link in an open area (where everyone can see it), but I didn't.  So now you guy can look at all the CT stuff I post for the deppers and don't need to register.  Please let me know if you guys can't see this area.  As the admin, sometimes my computer screen shows that I'm a normal user, when in fact I'm still logged in as admin.

    http://www.navydep.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2004

CRF - You shouldn't show the security token error anymore.  I get about 500 spammers a day trying to hack into my website.  So I have really good anti-spam software.  However there is an error if you set your Daylight Savings Time to the wrong position (ie I'm looking at certain Mideast countries, but I want to allow sailors in Bahrain to get in still).  So I reset everyones DST counter to where it should be.  Everyone is perfect now.

  • sammy1990

How is she doing, robin? Have they lost anyone from her class yet? Tell her to keep up the good work. The end is getting closer!
  • sammy1990

That is great robin. My son stressed the entire 6 months so u know that meant I stressed. lol. Sounds like she figured out the process and is saving u that :o)
  • alismz

well, sammy, i'm getting the feeling that it's going to be the same here...six months of stress while they stress?!! ... and as far as i've heard, so far all CTN's have passed the past week's tests but another hurdle tmrw!... i knew that our Sailors would be integrated with Army, Marines & Coast Guard but surprised me to hear that they are joined by 2-4 year enlisted...i had assumed for some reason that they'd class up with other newly graduated from bc...

  • Craig

robin - It makes my life much easier when the parents know more than the deppers.  The deppers have selective hearing, and they only hear what they want to hear.  Whereas the parents analyze everything.  They know their kids learning style, and can drill some of the things I say into their heads.

In boot camp, they will tell you about the deafening "popping" sound they will hear all the time.  It's the sounds of their head coming out of the butts when they finally realize they need to listen.  When that happens, then they start analyzing things too.
