Welcome to the group, Jennifer.  You will find this group isn't very active perhaps as much as other groups. I have a son who is in advanced jet training now in TX. Being supportive and 110% behind him is so important, throughout his career, so you are off to a good start.  I know it's hard to have kids far away. You will adjust, and hopefully can think of it as new places to go and visit. I've been to TX about 5 times since mine has been there and it's always great to visit them in their environment, meet their friends, and see for yourself how well they are doing. The USN treats them like adults, so despite always being our babies in our hearts, it's our cue to do that too.  I don't offer advice unless asked (and for this problem solving Mom, that's challenging but I know the right thing to do), have become a great listener as I know sometimes he just needs to decompress and talk it out, and try to read and ask thoughtful questions to better understand what he is going through, while knowing I will never understand what it is truly like. I try not to call much, and let him call me when he is free, as I know his schedule is crazy and always changing. We have a great relationship and I know he appreciates my support and effort to learn more about his experience.  This may or may not work for you, but it's all I can offer as it's been what I did and how I have coped.  I miss him terribly but respect his choice of career and cherish the few times a year I can see him. I won't lie, flight school, especially jets, can scare me to death sometimes but I choose not to focus on the scary and know he is being trained well so have to trust the process. Thank you to your son for his selflessness in not only being a nurse but choosing to be a nurse for our service members.  You did ok, Mama. :)
